  • Windows 7 Professional doesn't mount my usb flash drive anymore

    I have a Kingston flash drive which works fine in every computer that I insert it. But in my Windows 7 it doesn't mount anymore. Why this is happening ? When I insert the flash drive it seems that the Windows 7 recognize it, but when I hover the icon don't show the flash drive to remove it, as usually does. Any idea ? Thanks. Any idea ?   • IIS in VirtualBox serving files from shared Ubuntu folder

    Here's the problem: I want to use Ubuntu. But I need to develop ASP.NET (MVC) sites. So I setup VirtualBox with Win2003 and IIS6. But I would prefer my working files to be located in my Ubuntu home folder. So I setup shared folder in VirtualBox and make IIS6 virtual directory work from there. The problem is, IIS6 can't do this. Whatever I try (mapped drive, network uri path) I get different IIS errors: can't access folder (for mapped drive), can't monitor file system changes (\vboxsvr share path), and so on. Is there a way for IIS6 in virtual machine to configure virtual application folder to be on host machine (Ubuntu) - be it shared folder, mapped drive, smb share, or whatever?

  • How to retain background colors when pasting between documents in Excel

    I have a script that programatically generates excel spreadsheets - cleaning up ugly reports that are given to us from another organisation. For interests sake; I'm using PHPExcel to generate the "clean" reports. We get these reports every week for an event that happens every couple of months. The reports contain a list of attendees along with a group id that allows us to know that some attendees belong together. To help the event organisers out, I've taken the event ID and generated a unqiue color code (based on the hash of the event ID - truncated to 6 characters). This unique colour code is set as the background color of a cell in each row. This helps organisers quickly visually identify group members. Trouble is, when the organisers copy the rows from the weeks report into the master report (which contains all attendees, not just the ones that signed up this week) - all the colour-codes snap to the master template's color pallette.     Background: I am integrating two separate web application that are developed in ASP .NET and JSP/Struts. As such, they are hosted on two different server technologies, namely Win2K3 and Redhat Enterprise Server 5.5. Problem: There is a copy of production data in my test environment with real e-mail addresses. I need to test the e-mail functionality of these applications, but I do not want them to send out actual e-mails. Is there a way to catch and redirect all outgoing e-mails? Ideally, I would like to send all outgoing e-mails to another e-mail (i.e., [email protected]) so my testers can look at them. Thanks for the help in advance!

  • Load balance between two virtual directories on a single machine running IIS6

    I'm trying to simulate a production environment using a single VM. The production environment will have 3 servers behind a load balancer with sticky sessions. Production will be using IIS6. For development, I have no need to distribute load, but I want to make sure the team does not write code that relies on a single-server module. I have been hoping to set up two virtual directories and find some isapi filter to perform some rudimentary software load balancing, but I've been unable to locate anything suitable. isapi_rewrite comes close but there's no ability for a random rewrite. I don't even need sticky sessions since the application does not (in theory) rely on them. Is there something easy/free to do this, or am I stuck with multiple VMs and a NLB setup (which seems like total overkill)?

    Why do I get this message when trying to compile a file in Flash MX 2004? "If you are logged in with a limited user account, then you may be attempting to write into another users folder which is not supported." The folder and files are owned by the Administrators group; however, the user trying to modify the files is a member of a group which is inheriting permissions to have full control over the files, except take ownership and change permissions. Why would a user, whose effective permissions include virtually everything, be unable to write to a file... and end up getting an error message like the one described?

  • How do internal smtp servers send mail to internal mail servers on the network?

    We have upgraded our internal corporate email server and the IP address has changed internal to our network. A second email server is used for sending bulk jobs for a mailing list service that we offer. Since the switch of the internal corporate server IP we have been seeing problems when the bulk email server is trying to send email to our own domain. The log shows that it is still trying to hit the old corporate server instead of the new one. I have looked through all settings for the bulk email software and see nothing set there to send to internal mail servers, and I do not recall doing anything special to get this working when setup a couple years ago. Is there a setting in Win2003 or on the network that enables the mapping of MX record external IPs to internal IPs so mail gets routed correctly?

  • At what point does Active Directory and Domain Services become necessary? [closed]

    I see time and time again such services running in a business environment with only 10 users. Everyone in the office authenticates with the DC and interacts with a shared drive where files and documents are stored. I can't help but think...reeeeealy? But I don't know, that's why I'm asking. To me it seems like you need to reach a certain threshold of size and needs before you throw a DC into the mix. ie: a 20+ user business (and growing) with permission requirements that separate the sales team from accounting. Thoughts?

  • Windows unrecoverable error wouldn't come out of Hibernate

    Out of curiosity... I was in a rush: I put my laptop into Hibernate (I don't keep a battery in it btw) Leaned it against a box in the laundry room Smooth tile floor means bottom of laptop slide out and laptop feel flat against floor, not super hard, but it wasn't carpeting so.. Next time I booted my laptop, I received this error for the first time ever: (not an exact quote) Windows experienced an unrecoverable error and cannot come out of Hibernate. Windows is restarting now After that, my laptop seemed to operate flawlessly. What do you think happened? Jared the electronics? I'm guessing an error like this would result of some sort of hard drive trauma, but fortunately, I have discovered none so far. I scheduled Error-checking for next restart.

  • Setting "Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode" does not persist in IIS 6

    Our IIS server was recently patched with the latest Microsoft Security Updates and since then, I am unable to enable the "Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode" setting. This setting was enabled prior to patching and somehow changed during the updates. I have tried both using the IIS Manager console and the adsutil.vbs approach to change it. Either way, after resetting IIS for the change to take effect, when I go to verify that the isolation mode setting is enabled (true) I find that is reverts back to being disabled (false). Now... The patches have already been rolled back, however the setting still does not persist when I enable it. While I am trying to research the patches that were applied to see if there is a known issue (or perhaps a change in this setting's behavior) I was hoping someone else might have come across the same problem.   • IIS 6 getting "Page Not Found" after applying SSL

    I am setting up SSL certificates on a development environment using IIS 6 on W2k3. I have a directory called login with a single page login.asp which I would like only viewable over SSL. So before installing or applying SSL permissions, the page is viewable through a browser. I can browse the page and it redirects etc. and all is good. However Basic Authentication is Base64 encoded so I want to secure the traffic from this page only. I have created a dummy certificate in makecert, installed it and added it to IIS. IIS is happy that it is trusted. I have selected the directory of login and child files to "Require SSL channel". When I refresh my browser on login/login.asp I get a "404: Page Not Found" in IE 8. So 2 issues here The page is now unviewable when using HTTPS. They must manually type the HTTPS (minor inconvenience for now) If I turn off "Require SSL Channel" from IIS, it works again. What part of the process am I missing as I have followed several tutorials on installed SSL certificates, but still come across this barrier.

  • NTDS Replication Warning (Event ID 2089)

    I have a simple little network with 3 AD servers in 2 sites. Site A has Win2k3 SP2 and Win2k SP4 servers, site B has a single Win2k3 SP2 server. All have been in place for at least 3 years now. Just last week I started getting Event 2089 "not backed up" warnings (example below) on both of the win2k3 servers. I understand what the message means, no need to send me links to the technet article explaining it. I'll improve my backups. What I'm more curious about is why did I just start getting this message now? Why haven't I been getting it for the past 3 years?!? Perhaps this is related: I recently decommissioned a few other sites and AD controllers (there used to be 3 more sites, each with their own controller). Don't worry, I did proper DCpromo exercises and made sure we didn't lose anything. But would shutting those down possibly be related to why I get this error now? This won't keep me awake at night but I am curious as to what changed...   • Windows Swap (Page File): Enable or Disable?

    From my personal experience I've noticed that disabling the page file in Windows XP has given me, in general, the most speed gain out of any other software change I can make. Obviously this has to be done when a significant amount of RAM is available. Typically I find that it works nicely with +2GB of RAM. The only issues I've ever really had were loading up Adobe Photoshop. Is this really a speed improvement or am I imagining it? Note: In order to actually turn it off, you must not just set it to 0MB, but disable it. Otherwise Windows will just expand it when it needs to in order to meet its needs.

  • Windows XP installation problems

    I recently asked a question on here, and thought I had it working... Here is a link to it. Windows XP Installation problems So basically I'm having trouble getting XP installed. To sum it up, a computer I have had a boot sector virus, and I used Darik's Nuke and Boot to wipe the hard drive clean. So the hard drive has nothing on it. I had to try and install Windows through a DOS prompt, because for some reason it won't read it off the DVD. The UBCD is able to look at the files located on the DVD I have in, but I can't boot from it for some reason. So I extracted it to a USB drive, booted to DOS and started the setup process. Here's the weird thing with DOS... It can only find the C: drive. The C: drive in DOS is the flash drive that I have in, running DOS. I can't find the hard drive anywhere! So anyways, after starting the setup process, it copied the files over to the "hard drive" (which took 16 hours because the version of DOS I ran couldn't run smartdrv.exe), and it said the computer had to reboot. So I let it reboot, and it stopped and said there is no boot device. So I popped in UBCD that I have installed on a flash drive, and I discovered that it had copied the Windows files over to the flash drive and not the hard drive. It never asked where it should extract the files... So I toyed around with UBCD, ran a memory test on the hard drive to make sure it was fine, and it came out clean. So I'm stuck now. How can I get this installed? Writing this, I came up with an idea. If I copy the DOS startup files over to the hard drive, would I be able to start DOS from it? If so, I believe that could fix my problems. Any help is greatly appreciated, because I am running out of ideas and am at my wits end with this computer.

  • Remove all HTTP bindings from an IIS 6 site while leaving SSL bindings

    We have a (remote, via a reseller) customer who configured their IIS6 server to not have any port 80 HTTP bindings, only port 443 SSL bindings. We would like to reproduce this without going through the three layers (!) to get to the customer to test some error scenerios. However, whenever I try to get IIS to not listen on IIS at all, I can't do it. If I do it in the UI, either leaving in the main properties page, or in the advanced bindings page, the UI does not let me proceed. If I remove the HTTP ServerBindings from the metabase.xml directly, IIS makes it port 80, all unassigned addresses anyway. Is there a way to get to the "SSL only" state naturally? Please note I am NOT talking about the "require SSL" checkbox or underlying metabase setting, as that still listens on port 80 (or whatever) to give the "SSL required" error message. I'm talking about not having any bindings listed at all for HTTP.

  • IIS6 Permissions

    We have a set of IIS6 Jakarta/ASP.NET applications (implemented as virtual directories) on a machine without a domain. The directories all exist under the default website. We need to setup the permissions so that certain users can access only specific applications yet others users can access several of the applications. The way it's been setup previously has been to explicitly deny access to the users for every application except the ones that they are allowed to see. The problem is that the list of applications changes fairly often (for demos etc) and it's been known for the developers to forget to deny the old users access to the new applications which leads to security problems. This is all quite unmaintainable. Does anybody have any advice on this? Surely I can't be the only person to find this all a bit of a mess? Thanks
