  • Connecting remotely to an SQL server inside a LAN

    Hello everyone, I am using SQL server 2008 inside my home lan. I've configured it to accept remote connections and I can now connect to the server from other pcs inside the lan. The problems rises when I try connecting to the server from a computer outside of my home lan. I've disabled my router's firewall and I've configured a virtual server on port 1433 forwarding to the correct lan ip. What's wrong? why is it not working? Thank you very much for your help~! Edit: This is the error I keep getting: A network related or instance specific error occured while establishing connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that the SQL SERVER is configued to allow remote connections. (provider : Sql network interfaces, error: 25- Connection string is not valid) OK these are my router's details: edimax br-6204wg I am not sure how I am supposed to browse google.com. can you be a bit more specific?

  • Can't get past bootcamp Windows logo, freezes immediately after picking boot partition -- Windows 7

    Hi, I had a fine install of Windows 7 alongside Snow Leopard. I had a power outage, and Windows restarted. When I booted via the "Hold Option" sceen, it started hanging at the grayscale "Windows logo" (squares) that comes up after picking the Windows drive from the bootcamp loader (the Windows version of the grayscale Apple logo when OS X loads). I think this happened once before, and installing rEFIt helped. I did that, but it continued to hang at the same point. I finally got fed up with it and erased the Windows partition via Disk Utility. I then reinstalled Windows 7 x64 from DVD to the fresh partition. Seemed fine. Ran Windows Update then restarted. FFFFFFFFF. Hangs in the same place. What can I do? Like I said, I already have rEFIt installed. Booting the Windows 7 install CD results in the same infinite loading error. I don't have a spare Snow Leopard disk handy.

  • Windows 7 won't boot from any bootloader except for Windows Boot Manager after partition resize

    I have a triple boot system on a single SSD: OSX, Windows 7, and Ubuntu. I use Chimera (basically another version of Chameleon) as my bootloader. Usually I can boot all 3 OSs without any issue, but after using GParted to make my Ubuntu partition 2 Gigs larger, Windows 7 throws me an error when trying to boot to it from either Chimera or Grub. The error is consistently: `0xc000000e can't find \Boot\BCD" (slightly paraphrased). However, I can still get into Windows by selecting Windows Boot Manager from the boot options in my BIOS. I've already tried several known fixes for similar issues, including bootrec /rebuildbcd (and variations), and BootRec.exe/fixMBR + BootRec.exe/fixBoot. I've also tried Chkdsk. At best this has made it so Windows 7 boots on its own by default (making me have to reinstall Chimera and change back my boot settings in the BIOS). At worst this made it so Windows won't boot period. Now I'm back full circle where I started. A detail that might be useful is that bootrec /rebuildbcd says that the number of found Windows installations is 0. I'm fairly certain that I don't have a hybrid MBR. Mainly because I have a UEFI BIOS, and with that, it appears each OS can support a GPT. So it would kind of pointless to have and deal with. I may be wrong though, I couldn't find any way of finding out for sure online. However, I know for sure that the version of Windows I have installed is the UEFI version, as well as every partition tool I've used to look at my boot drive tells me it's GPT. How do I get it back so I can boot Windows 7 through another bootloader so I don't have to manually select it in the BIOS? Preferably without a reinstall.

  • Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V very slow

    I have been running several Hyper-V VMs on Windows Server 2008 R2 for the past couple of years and enjoying perfectly adequate performance for my testing/development/r&d environments. I'm a software developer so my hardware knowledge is basic however I built the rig using: •Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard •Intel Core i7 960 3.20GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) •24GB triple channel RAM The host OS is running on an OCZ SSD and all the VMs are running on a 2TB Marvell SATA3 RAID 0 array consisting of 2 Western Digital Caviar Black 7,200rpm drives. I have tested the speed of the 2TB drive and appear to be getting less than 3Mbs but it can adequately run a 4 VM farm including a DC, (SQL) database and IIS application servers. I recently upgraded the SSD on which the host runs to a 256GB OCZ Vertex 4 and took the opportunity to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 and installed the Hyper-V role. I tried importing one of my existing Windows Server 2008 R2 VMs (and converted it to .vhdx) plus I have tried creating a brand new Windows Server 2008 R2 VM but both are running extremely slowly and I can see nothing obvious using the host and guest Task Manager/Resource Monitor tools. In both cases the VM has 8GB RAM (fixed), 4 CPUs, fixed size HD (not expanding) and is using an external virtual network running on a separate NIC to the host. I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest available version and checked the virtualization settings. I have run out of "obvious" (to a developer) things to check/configure and my next option will be to re-install the host OS but before I do I would very much appreciate any advice from any experts out there.   • Install MS Office on Windows Server 2008 - in support of Quickbooks RemoteApp

    How can I install MS Office on Windows Server 2008? The purpose would be to enable Quickbooks to be able to export to Excel. Quickbooks is set up to run as a RemoteApp in a Terminal Server environment. The Quickbooks applicaiton senses whether or not Excel is installed and will not allow the user to create an Excel report unless Excel is actually installed on the client running Quickbooks. Since the client and the server are the same machine in a Terminal Server environment, Excel must be installed on Windows Server for the Quickbooks Excel exporting feature to work in this setup. There is no need to actually use Excel in a Terminal Services environment. We only need to generate the Excel files using the server, then we can use an installed version Excel on a regular Windows 7 machine to work with the Excel file. MS Office does not normally install on Windows Server. Is there any way to buy a special license? Could we somehow fool Quickbooks into thinking Excel is installed, if that would work?

  • Configure Windows firewall to prevent an application from listening on a specific port [closed]

    The issue: there are many applications struggling to listen on port 80 (Skype, Teamviewer et al.), and to many of them that even is not essential (in the sense that you can have a httpd running and blocking the http port, and the other application won't even squeak about being unable to open the port). What makes things worse, some of the apps are... Well, I suppose, that it's okay that the mentally impaired are being integrated in the society by giving them a job to do, but... Programming requires some intellectual effort, in my humble opinion... What I mean is that there is no way to configure the app not to use specific ports (that's what you get for using proprietary software) - you can either add it to windows firewall exceptions (and succumb to undesired port opening behavior) or not (and risk losing most - if not all - of the functionality). Technically, it is not impossible for the firewall to deny an application opening an incoming port even if the application is in the exception list. And if this functionality is built into the Windows firewall somewhere, there should be a way to activate it. So, what I want to know is: whether there exists such an option, and if it does how to activate it.

  • InteropServices COMException when executing a .net app from a web CGI script on Windows Server 2003

    Disclaimer: I'm completely clueless about .net and COM. I have a vendor's application that appears to be written in .net and I'm trying to wrap it with a web form (a cgi-bin Perl script) so I can eventually launch this vendor's app from a separate computer. I'm on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SE SP1 system and I'm using Apache 2.2 for the web server and ActivePerl 5.10.0.1004 for the cgi script. My cgi script calls the vendor's app that resides on the same machine using the Perl backtick operator. ... $result = "Result: " . `$vendorsPath/$vendorsExecutable $arg1 $arg2`; ... Right now I'm just running IE web browser locally on the server machine and accessing "http://localhost/cgi-bin/myPerlScript.pl". The vendor's app fails and logs a debug message that includes the following stack trace (I changed a couple names so as to not give away the vendor's identity): ... When I run the vendors app from the Windows command line on the server machine with the exact same arguments that the cgi script is passing it runs just fine, so there's something about invoking their app via the web script that is causing a problem. This problem is likely security related because the whole thing runs just fine on a Windows XP Pro machine (both command line and web invocation). I actually developed my web script there and got it completely working there before I tried moving it to the Windows Server 2003 machine. So what's different about the Windows Server 2003 machine that would keep the vendor's .net app from being executed successfully by a web cgi script? Can I fix this problem somehow to make it work on my server or will the vendor have to make a change to their .net app and ship out a new version? I'm probably the only person in the world who is trying to execute this vendor's app from a separate program, so I hate to bother the vendor with the issue if there's a workaround that I can implement myself here on my server machine. Plus, I'm in kind of a hurry and I don't want to wait 4 or 6 months for the vendor to put in a fix and deploy a new version. Thanks for any advise you can give.

    I've an mvc + nh asp.net application. On my dev machine (win 7 Ent) all works fine, if deployed on a Win 2k3 (tried 2 different vm and one phisical machine) I got the following error.. anyone can help?     Just successfully installed and ran Windows 8's Windows to Go on a USB external hard drive. However, after shutting down and removing the USB hard disk, whey I to start my laptop (with only Windows 7 installed), but it doesn't boot and trying to repair it doesn't work. It seems that Windows 8 had corrupted the partition table on the laptop's hard drive, causing Windows 7 to fail to boot. How do I fix that and avoid future problems of the same type?

  • Incompatibilities between Indy 9 and Windows Server 2003?

    I'm having a problem with a Delphi application on some Windows 2003 servers. It uses a webservice call to connect with another server and transmit data back and forth. As soon as the app gets to the Authenticate method, the app dies. The app has worked for years on previous boxes with Win Server 2003, but it doesn't on freshly built machines. The machines are set up the same way for the most part, but there is clearly some config setting that differs that I'm not able to track down. Also, while the error becomes apparent in the call to Authenticate, packet sniffing proves that nothing ever happens between the app and the server it's trying to contact, which strengthens my thoughts that something is dieing early on in setting up the connection. I can't duplicate the error locally, so I can't step through the app in a debugger either. Any thoughts on why an Indy 9 Delphi web connection might silently fail?

  • Export an Excel spreadsheet to fixed-width text file?

    Excel has the functionality to import fixed-width text files where it presents a dialog that lets you choose where the begins and ends of fields are which it puts into columns. Does it also have functionality where, given an existing spreadsheet, you can export to a fixed-width text file? If so, how do I access this? I have tried using Save As and choosing Text File but it seems to only save as Tab-delimited which doesn't help me. This is Excel 2003 if it matters.

  • Completely remove user account and create another with same name in Windows 7

    Here's my question simply and then the details in case they help to get me an appropriate answer. Question: How can I completely and permanently delete a user account in Windows 7 so that I can create another one with the same user name without the computer name extension added, eg Jane Smith not Jane Smith.computer name? The details: I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. (My laptop crashed, I reinstalled Vista and restored backup files but things weren't working so I decided to just get Windows 7 since I had to start over anyway). I used Windows Easy Transfer to save just about everything, even customizing to include a user's appdata from Windows.old which was created when I reinstalled Vista -- not knowing that another windows.old file would be created with the installation of Windows 7. After installing Windows 7, I used Windows Easy Transfer to transfer the user file, appdata, to the new user account which I gave the same name (Jane Smith) in case having a different name would cause problems with reading files or something. Afterwards, I realized that I did not want ALL of that junk. So, I thought no problem, I'll just delete the user account I just created, nothing lost, and create another one this time transferring only the files I wanted (using the customize option in windows easy transfer). I wanted to keep the same user name, e.g. Jane Smith, so after I deleted the user account I checked the files, and I didn't see. It was late so I went to bed and the next morning I created a new user with that same name (Jane Smith). The files looked fine if I remember correctly. Meanwhile, I updated the computer and it restarted a couple times. As I was moving files to the "Jane Smith" user account file, things weren't working as they should. I was actually moving files to the deleted user account and that the current user account was named "Jane Smith.computer name" and that's where the files needed to go. I don't like this. It's too confusing. I want just "Jane Smith". How can I do this without just changing the user name (which doesn't change it in the file path etc)? I want the first one GONE. If I can't do this, is it a problem to create an account with another name and still transfer files to it without path or other problems? I hope this question makes sense and that someone can help me. Thank you in advance!

    My PC comes with an OEM copy of Windows 8 (regular), but I only have a Windows 8 Professional DVD. Will Windows 8 automatically detect the edition associated with the product key in my BIOS and install Windows 8 (regular) instead of allowing me to enter the key for the Professional edition? (I have an Asus Q200E Win 8 Core OEM laptop. I borrowed a Windows 8 Professional DVD from my friends, so naturally, I can’t use his product key.)

  • SQL Server 2000 tables

    We currently have an SQL Server 2000 database with one table containing data for multiple users. The data is keyed by memberid which is an integer field. The table has a clustered index on memberid. The table is now about 200 million rows. Indexing and maintenance are becoming issues. We are debating splitting the table into one table per user model. This would imply that we would end up with a very large number of tables potentially upto the 2,147,483,647, considering just positive values. My questions: Does anyone have any experience with a SQL Server (2000/2005) installation with millions of tables? What are the implications of this architecture with regards to maintenance and access using Query Analyzer, Enterprise Manager etc. What are the implications to having such a large number of indexes in a database instance.     Hi all, Is there a way to enumerate all open file handles and/or registry handles in Windows Mobile 5 / Windows CE 5.x? In particular, I'd like to get the handles for all processes in the system, and not just the ones for my application. This would be similar to the list of handles in Sysinternals's Process Explorer for Win32 or Sysinternals's handle.exe I anticipate that someone will ask "Is this absolutely necessary for your application?" My answer to that would be "I think so, unless there's a better way to get a list of all open file names and registry key names." The goal is to provide diagnostic information about an application that crashes and fails to uninstall properly, but that worked properly at one time on the same device. (I do not have debugging information for the buggy application.)

  • sql db problem with windows authentication

    Have a SQL Server 2008 db which I connect to the Windows Authentication .. has worked good for 7-8 months .. but now when I come to work today it no longer worked to connect, without that I had done something Error message was: Can not open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'Jimmy-PC \ Jimmy'. where the first is the computer name and the second is the user. The problem seems to be that it tries to connect to the default database. Have tried to change it without success .. I do not have sql server management tools for sql 2008 but only to 2005, someone who has similar experience? who have not touched anything said over the weekend and it worked last Friday without any problems.
