  • Windows SBS 2003 Remote Desktop Problem

    - by david.healed
Hi, I used to remote access the SBS 2003 server through RDC and it has been working all the time but now I am unable to connect to the server. Whenever I pressed the "Connect" button on the Remote Desktop Connection dialog, a dialog with messages like "Connecting to: xx.xx.xx.xx" and "Configuring remote session..." appeared and then disappeared quickly, leaving the Remote Desktop Connection dialog there. How to fix the problem? Thank you.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 and Keyboards

    - by Brian
Hello, I have a machine with WIN server 2008 R2 installed, when the machine boots up, it says keyboard failure. The keyboard I had was from an older machine and was PS/2, I got a PS/2 to USB converter in order for it to work, but it says keyboard failure and doesn't work. Is it because it's pretty old and that's it, or does it have to be USB? I'm going to look into a new one, but want to make sure I don't get this issue again... Thanks.

  • Microsoft mouse like windows switcher (or anything usable)

    - by Fujishiro
I tried "Switcher" and the new switcher by NTSoft... but none of them are for my taste. I want to have a switcher like what you get with an Intellimouse by Microsoft. You know, press the button and get a cool tiled layout of thumbnails. To be precise, anything is fine with me. But: - No AERO need(I seriously hate it.); - Be able to switch between apps by mouse; - Be able to make them come up in a cube (not just a row); ... uhm. I guess I summed up everything I want. (In a nutshell: A usable alt-tab/window switcher. ^^").. Thanks in advance.

  • apache generating to many rotatelogs.exe on Windows?

    - by Patrick
I'm seeing some odd behavior with Apache's rotatelogs.exe. On one of my servers I'm seeing multiple rotatelogs.exe counting into the 100's. Normally I usually only see 6 which I can rationalize to the 3 logs I have rotating. Does anyone know why this might be happening and how I can prevent it from happening. When the rotatelogs.exe processes get up into the 100's everything slows down and Apache is effectively shutdown because it can't process requests anymore. We are using the following line in our httpd.conf file: ErrorLog "|\"C:/Program Files/Apache2/bin/rotatelogs.exe\" \"C:/Program Files/Apache2/logs/error_log.%Y-%m-%d-%H_%M_%S\" 20M" Thanks in advance for the help!

  • Does Windows DFS always keep some files backlogged?

    - by Badger
I have been monitoring our DFS backlog and I have noticed that is hasn't really dropped below 1000 or so files. I am assuming this means it needs to use more bandwidth. So starting last night I allowed it to use 512Kbps between 6pm and 4am, when it used to only get 128Kbps. I noticed a large drop, but it never went below about 1500 files. I just want to be sure my conclusion about needing to use more bandwidth is correct before I tell my boss about it. I have included a graph of the data showing my stats from yesterday afternoon and last night. DFS Backlog Graph

  • What files should be excluded from a complete Windows backup?

    - by tro
I'm starting to use CrashPlan to backup my Win 7 PC. I've got it writing to my external HD (for quick local restores) and to CrashPlan Central (for offsite storage). I'd like to backup my entire C:\ drive (the only partition) in a way that: Preserves all of my installed software and configuration, but Avoids backing up log files and other ephemeral / temporary files that are regenerated during normal operation of the OS. Which files and/or directories should I be excluding from backups? I'd like to make this a community wiki, so that we could all contribute towards a definitive list. Here's a list of regular expressions identifying the directories and files that CrashPlan excludes on Windows by default listed at http://support.crashplan.com/doku.php/articles/admin_excludes: .*/(?:42|\d{8,})/(?:cp|~).* (?i).*/CrashPlan.*/(?:cache|log|conf|manifest|upgrade)/.* .*\.part .*/iPhoto Library/iPod Photo Cache/.* .*\.cprestoretmp.* *\.rbf :/Config\\.Msi.* .*/Google/Chrome/.*cache.* .*/Mozilla/Firefox/.*cache.* .*\$RECYCLE\.BIN/.* .*/System Volume Information/.* .*/RECYCLER/.* .*/I386.* .*/pagefile.sys .*/MSOCache.* .*UsrClass\.dat\.LOG .*UsrClass\.dat .*/Temporary Internet Files/.* (?i).*/ntuser.dat.* .*/Local Settings/Temp.* .*/AppData/Local/Temp.* .*/AppData/Temp.* .*/Windows/Temp.* (?i).*/Microsoft.*/Windows/.*\.log .*/Microsoft.*/Windows/Cookies.* .*/Microsoft.*/RecoveryStore.* (?i).:/Config\\.Msi.* (?i).*\\.rbf .*/Windows/Installer.* Other excludes: .*\.(class|obj) .*/hiberfil.sys (?i).*\.tmp (?i).*/temp/ (?i).*/tmp/ .*Thumbs\.db .*/Local Settings/History/ .*/NetHood/ .*/PrintHood/ .*/Cookies/ .*/Recent/ .*/SendTo/

  • Windows 2008 R2 Servers Sending Arp Requests for IPs outside Subnet

    - by Kyle Brandt
By running a packet capture on my my routers I see some of my servers sending ARP requests for IPs that exist outside of its network. For example if my network is: Network: 8.8.8.0/24 Gateway: 8.8.8.1 (MAC: 00:21:9b:aa:aa:aa) Example Server: 8.8.8.20 (MAC: 00:21:9b:bb:bb:bb) By running a capture on the interface that has 8.8.8.1 I see requests like: Sender Mac: 00:21:9b:bb:bb:bb Sender IP: 8.8.8.20 Target MAC: 00:21:9b:aa:aa:aa Target IP: 69.63.181.58 Anyone seen this behavior before? My understanding of ARP is that requests should only go out for IPs within the subnet... Am I confused in my understanding of ARP? If I am not confused, anyone seen this behavior? Also, these seem to happen in bursts and it doesn't happen when I do something like ping an IP outside of the network. Update: In response to Ian's questions. I am not running anything like Hyper-V. I have multiple interfaces but only one is active (Using BACS failover teaming). The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 (Even if it were something different it wouldn't explain an IP like 69.63.181.58). When I run MS Network Monitor or wireshark I do not see these ARP requests. What happens is that on the router capturing I see a burst of about 10 requests for IPs outside of the network from the host machine. On the machine itself using wireshark or NetMon I see a flood of ARP responses for all the machines on the network. However, I don't see any requests in the capture asking for those responses. So it seems like maybe it is maybe refreshing the arp cache but including IPs that outside of the network. Also when it does this NetMon doesn't show the ARP requests?

  • Windows Media Player Network Sharing eating lots of CPU

    - by reyjavikvi
There is a process, wmpnetwk.exe, which sometimes goes crazy and starts eating like 60-70% CPU. If I kill the process it just comes back again, so the only solution I've found is to stop the WMPNetworkSvc service, which makes the whole thing stop. I don't use WMP, so I don't care if this is disabled, but I'd like to know what's causing it (Google has revealed that it also happened to other people), and if there's a more permanent way of fixing the problem.

  • Can't initialize drive in Windows 7

    - by Abe
I have a 2.5" laptop harddrive that I plugged into my laptop through a SATA to USB cable. It's powered by an adapter to a normal wall-plug. I want to use it as an external harddrive. It wouldn't initialize (Device is not ready), so as suggested in some instructions I found I uninstalled the drivers, unplugged it and plugged it back in. That worked, and I initialized the drive and formatted it. However I unplugged it after that and a few days later the same strategy does not work and I can't figure out how to use the drive. I can't initialize it and it doesn't show up in my computer.

  • Cisco Configuration backup with Windows Script.

    - by Jeff
We have a client with a lot of Cisco Devices and we would like to automate the backups of these devices through telnet. We have both 2003 and 2008 servers and ideally use tftp to back it up. I wrote this: Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Dim fso Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Dim ciscoList ciscoList = "D:\Scripts\SwitchList.txt" Set theSwitchList = fso.OpenTextFile(ciscoList, 1) Do While theSwitchList.AtEndOfStream <> True cisco = theSwitchList.ReadLine Run "cmd.exe" SendKeys "telnet " SendKeys cisco SendKeys "{ENTER}" SendKeys "USERNAME" SendKeys "{ENTER}" SendKeys "PASSWORD" SendKeys "{ENTER}" SendKeys "en" SendKeys "{ENTER}" SendKeys "PASSWORD" SendKeys "{ENTER}" SendKeys "copy startup-config tftp{ENTER}" SendKeys "(TFTP IP){ENTER}" SendKeys "FileName.txt{ENTER}" SendKeys "exit{ENTER}" 'close telnet session' SendKeys "{ENTER}" 'get command prompt back SendKeys "{ENTER}" SendKeys "exit{ENTER}" 'close cmd.exe On Error Resume Next WScript.Sleep 3000 Loop Sub SendKeys(s) WshShell.SendKeys s WScript.Sleep 300 End Sub Sub Run(command) WshShell.Run command WScript.Sleep 100 WshShell.AppActivate command WScript.Sleep 300 End Sub But the problem with this is the sendkeys are sent to the console session, I'm trying to find a solution that would not require a user to be logged in. Does anyone have any ideas? I have some knowlage of VBS, PowerShell and a pretty good grasp on batching.

  • How to prevent windows from being resized?

    - by endolith
Adobe Audition is really stupid in that when you change the size of the window, and then change it back to the original size, all the frame positions are lost and you have to tediously reposition them by hand. I'd like to make it completely impossible to ever resize the window, just keep it maximized at all times. If I accidentally click "Restore" or drag the title bar, it should either ignore it, or move around the screen while staying the same size. Is there any way to do this?

  • Best Timing for Windows AD Domain Name Change

    - by Cliff Racer
A while back when I first started with my company, the domain had already been set up using a "xxx.net" DNS name for the internal AD namespace. The shortname is just fine and I feel no need to change it but I have always hated how we used an internet DNS name for our internal AD. We are planning an AD upgrade from 2003 to 2008R2 and I would like to work this DNS name change if possible. I know there are procedures for doing a full domain name change but my question is: Is a FULL domain name change neccessary if all I want to change is the internal DNS name of the domain? Would it be better to do this change after the 2008R2 domain upgrade?

  • Windows 2012 VPN setup without Active Directory

    - by iss42
I have followed the guide here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qbpxKRb-94 But my situation differs with respect to there being no AD (Active Directory) setup. When I try to connect I get this in the server event log: "The user xx connected from x.x.x.x but failed an authentication attempt due to the following reason: The account does not have permission to dial in." Is there a way to enable this without AD?

  • Windows7 access to Printer shared with XP ?

    - by chmike
I have, at home, an eeebox running with XP 24/24 with an attached printer (Canon IP5300) installed as shared. We have a few other laptops and PC, all with vista, that can access and print on the shared printer without problem. We just received a new Dell computer with Windows7-64 on it, but it fails to connect the shared printer. I tried connecting the printer with its USB cord directly to the Windows7 PC and the required driver was automatically downloaded and installed. I could then access the printer specific properties, etc. But if I connect it back to the XP computer, the windows7 PC still refused to connect to the remote printer although it now have the drivers. The windows7 is a family pack. By the way, I also have an old canon scanner still perfectly working with XP, but for which I can't find compatible drivers for windows 7. Do I have to buy a new one ? Any help would be welcome.

  • MySQL Windows vs. Linux: performance, caveats, pros and cons?

    - by gravyface
Looking for (preferrably) some hard data or at least some experienced anecdotal responses with regards to hosting a MySQL database (roughly 5k transactions a day, 60-70% more reads than writes, < 100k of data per transaction i.e. no large binary objects like images, etc.) on Windows 2003/2008 vs. a Debian-based derivative (Ubuntu/Debian, etc.). This server will function only as a database server with a separate Web server on another physical box; this server will require remote access for management (SSH for Linux, RDP for Windows). I suspect that the Linux kernel/OS will compete less than the Windows Server for resources, but for this I can't be certain. There's also security footprint: even with Windows 2008, I'm thinking that the Linux box can be locked down more easily than the Windows Server. Anyone have any experience with both configurations?

  • Server 2008/Windows 7/Samba Unspecified error 80004005

    - by ancillary
I have a Samba share on a LAN with 2008 PDC/DNS. Smb authenticates with AD and I have several Win7 Machines that can connect fine. I recently added a couple of new computers to the LAN which were imaged the same way (same software, etc.; different hardware so different drivers) as the other machines and they have the same policies set. I can not get the new machines to connect to the samba share no matter what. I am always met with either Unspecified Error 0x80004005 or Network Path not found. I've turned off the firewall; set LANMAN auth to respond to NTLM only/send LM & NTLM responses/use NTLM session security if negotiated in Local Sec Policy SEcurity Options; tried both ip and hostname to connect. SMB log shows that authentication succeeds; but then connection is immediately killed by the client. tcpdump shows nothing remarkable except that when trying to connect from the client via hostname there is an unknown packet type error: ack 201 win 255 NBT Session Packet: Unknown packet type 0xABData: (41 bytes) Here's a couple of lines from that error: 11:18:37.964991 IP 001-client.domain.local.49372 > smb.domain.local.netbios-ssn: P 1670:2146(476) ack 201 win 255 NBT Session Packet: Unknown packet type 0xABData: (41 bytes) [000] AA 46 96 FA D5 99 33 75 0C C4 20 CE 26 42 F3 61 \252F\226\372\325\2313u \014\304 \316&B\363a [010] F0 8C FB 65 18 17 40 A5 DB 42 BB 94 37 53 92 EC \360\214\373e\030\027@\245 \333B\273\2247S\222\354 [020] 55 98 7F C4 AE 3D 6B 10 C4 U\230\177\304\256=k\020 \304 11:18:37.964998 IP smb.domain.local.netbios-ssn > 001-client.domain.local.49372: . ack 2146 win 100 Here's smb.conf just in case (though don't see how if other machines are working fine): [global] workgroup = MYDOMAIN realm = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL server string = domain|smb share interfaces = eth1 security = ADS password server = 192.168.1.3 log level = 2 log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log smb ports = 139 strict locking = no load printers = No local master = No domain master = No wins server = 192.168.1.3 wins support = Yes idmap uid = 500-10000000 idmap gid = 500-10000000 winbind separator = + winbind enum users = Yes winbind enum groups = Yes winbind use default domain = Yes [samba-share1] comment = SMB Share path = /home/share/smb/ valid users = @"MYDOMAIN+Domain Users" admin users = @"MYDOMAIN+Domain Admins" guest ok = no read only = No create mask = 0765 force directory mode = 0777 Any ideas what else I could try or look for? • Change Windows 7 Explorer's Details Pane limits

    - by Paul
For some reason, MS decided to completely kill the status bar's functionality in Win7 (and maybe Vista, but I don't know for sure). I have tried all possible options such as Classic Shell and so on. Basically, the one thing I miss most is seeing at a glance the total size of my selected files. I know I can press Alt+Enter or whatever, but that's not the point. The point is that the so-called 'details' pane stops providing details if more than 15 files are selected! WTH? Cannot understand the reason behind such a stupid arbitrary limit, that doesn't seem to be user-configurable at all. Anyway, what I'm looking for is a way to change that limit, either via the registry or otherwise. If changing the limit isn't possible, would it be possible for some programming genius to create a very small optimized light-weight non resource-hungry (you get the idea!) program whose sole purpose will be to automatically click the "Show more details..." link in the details pane after every file selection? For bonus points, the program should wait for a second or two after file selection is complete to do this, so that selecting multiple files in quick succession doesn't hit the HDD repeatedly. Any takers for the challenge? :)

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 - Giving local administrator full rights to all folders

    - by ToastMan
Hi guys, Is there a quick way to give the local administrator full rights to all folders on the C drive? I am having really hard time with that, I try to give it full rights to some folders (user profiles) but I can't even modify the NTFS permissions in some cases, I get "permission denied" Is there some soft of tutorial or script that will just give the administrator full rights on all folders in the C driver? Many thanks for your help! Toast
