  • Is there still a place for XML in the future?

    Now that many people seem to be moving towards JSON for web communication I am wondering about why XML should continue to be used. I appreciate that XML has many years on JSON, during which time it has been widely adopted. However, the fact that it is so well-adopted appears to be the one decisive reason why it should continue to be used. Is there a good reason why XML should not gradually be phased out in favour of JSON?

    I noticed that we always just are like: SmtpClient mSmtpClient = new SmtpClient(); // Send the mail message mSmtpClient.Send(mMailMessage); And the only place the credentials are set are in web.config: <system.net> <mailSettings> <smtp> <network host="xxx.xx.xxx.229" userName="xxxxxxxx" password="xxxxxxxx"/> </smtp> </mailSettings> </system.net> So my question is, how does it automagically get them out?

  • Collectable<T> serialization, Root Namespaces on T in .xml files.

    I have a Repository Class with the following method... public T Single<T>(Predicate<T> expression) { using (var list = (Models.Collectable<T>)System.Xml.Serializer.Deserialize(typeof(Models.Collectable<T>), FileName)) { return list.Find(expression); } } Where Collectable is defined.. [Serializable] public class Collectable<T> : List<T>, IDisposable { public Collectable() { } public void Dispose() { } } And an Item that uses it is defined.. [Serializable] [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlRoot("Titles")] public partial class Titles : Collectable<Title> { } The problem is when I call the method, it expects "Collectable" to be the XmlRoot, but the XmlRoot is "Titles" (all of object Title). I have several classes that are collected in .xml files like this, but it seems pointless to rewrite the basic methods for loading each up when the generic accessors do it - but how can I enforce the proper root name for each file without hard coding methods for each one? The [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlRoot] seems to be ignored.

    I am using a xsd schema file; there I specified an ordered list. When parsing an XML node of the kind... <myOrderedList> "element_1" "element_2" "element_3" </myOrderedList> (which is valid XML syntax) ...all XML parsers I know parse this as a single node element. Is there a way to get the XML parser parse this list for me (return it as a list or an array or whatever) or do I always have to parse it myself?

  • Can you use regular expressions in struts-config.xml?

    I'm trying to route these two url's to different Actions. We are using Struts 1.2: /abc-def/products /abc-def I tried putting this action first: <action path="/abc*/products" type="com.business.exampleAction"> <forward name="success" path="/go"/> </action> and then this one after: <action path="/abc*" type="com.business.differentExampleAction"> <forward name="success" path="/goElsewhere"/> </action> but it always goes to the second action (differentExampleAction in this case). I've tried various iterations for the , like . or (.*), but haven't found anything that actually works yet. From what I've read, it seems like the only regular-expression-like characters allowed in struts-config are the wildcard symbols (* and **), but I hope I am wrong.

    Hi everyone, I have a gigantic (4GB) XML file that I am currently breaking into chunks with linux "split" function (every 25,000 lines - not by bytes). This usually works great (I end up with about 50 files), except some of the data descriptions have line breaks, and so frequently the chunk files do not have the proper closing tags - and my parser chokes halfway through processing. Example file: (note: normally each "listing" xml node is supposed to be on its own line) <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <listings> <listing><date>2009-09-22</date><desc>This is a description WITHOUT line breaks and works fine with split</desc><more_tags>stuff</more_tags></listing> <listing><date>2009-09-22</date><desc>This is a really annoying description field WITH line breaks that screw the split function</desc><more_tags>stuff</more_tags></listing> </listings> Then sometimes my split ends up like <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <listings> <listing><date>2009-09-22</date><desc>This is a description WITHOUT line breaks and works fine with split</desc><more_tags>stuff</more_tags></listing> <listing><date>2009-09-22</date><desc>This is a really annoying description field WITH line breaks ... EOF So - I have been reading about "csplit" and it sounds like it might work to solve this issue. I cant seem to get the regular expression right...   • WCF web.config is getting overwritten after every compilation?

    Hi I have a Silverlight application calling a WCF service. SimplehttpBinding stuff. Every I make changes to silverlight xaml code, the web.config gets refrshed also. Even if make any changes to web.cofig file, they get overwritten too. Its as if, some other process is writing these files. Why is that happening? How can I make sure that it does not get overwritten after every compile? Please advise. THanks AJ.

The dal calls stored procedures to read and encapsulate the data from the schema into an xml message, wrap it up to a message and enqueue it on an internal queue for processing. I would to secure the channel from the database reads to the dequeue action. What would be the best way to do it.     I have an app which gets some data from the web via an XML document. I have this working fine and have followed apples SeismicXML example (uses NSURLRequest etc). I am very new to this so I have to admit that I do not totally understand all the code that gets the XML - but it is working. My problem is that my app may be running for some time so I want to be able to refresh the XML every now and again and check to see if it is different. If it is different I need to update my contents. Basically this means my questions are.... Is there a standard way of doing this? I was thinking of creating a timer to call the function which parses the XML but I can't figure out which function to call. If anyone can give me any pointers or even better examples of this it would be fab. Thanks

  • Quick way to get an NSDictionary from an XML NSData representation?

    I've loaded an XML file as NSData into memory and parse over the elements using NSXMLParser. Although it works, it's a very ugly and hard to maintain code since there are about 150 different elements to parse. I know there are nice third-party solutions, but I want to keep it with the iPhone SDK for purpose of practice and fun. So I thought: Why not convert that XML file into an NSDictionary? Having this, I could use fast enumeration to go over the elements. Or is it just the same amount of ugly code needed to parse and process an XML right away with NSXMLParser? Would I build up an NSDictionary for every found node in the XML and create a huge one, containing the whole structure and data? Or is there an even simpler way?
