• Request attributes in jsf / icefaces behaves strange (survive request end)

  I have the following code in a listener method: FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getRequestMap().put("time", new Date()); When a button is clicked the following code is executed System.out.println(FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getRequestMap().get("time")); One could except that "time" is null when the listener was not executed while processing the current request, but: it seems like the "time" object survives the request processing. So when "time" has been set sometimes in the past it stays there... can anybody explain this? Thanks.

• Ruby: wait for system command to end

  Hey all, I'm converting an xls 2 csv with a system(command) in ruby. After the conversion i'm processing this csv files. But the conversion is still going when the program wants to process the files. So at that time they are non existant. Can someone tell me if it's possible to let Ruby wait the right amount of time for the system command to finish? Right now i'm using sleep 20 but if it will take longer once, it isn't right of course... Thanks!

• Application_End() cannot access cache through HttpContext.Current.Cache[key]

  I want to be able to maintain certain objects between application restarts. To do that, I want to write specific cached items out to disk in Global.asax Application_End() function and re-load them back on Application_Start(). I currently have a cache helper class, which uses the following method to return the cached value: return HttpContext.Current.Cache[key]; Problem: during Application_End(), HttpContext.Current is null since there is no web request (it's an automated cleanup procedure) - therefore, I cannot access .Cache[] to retrieve any of the items to save to disk. Question: how can I access the cache items during Application_End()?

• Can't append space at end of NSString

  I have a UITextView in which I want the initial value to be "@username " (notice the space after the username). This way the user can start typing right away without having to tap space. So I do: textView.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"@%@ ", username]; But it seems like it's impossible to have an NSString ending with a space (it always gets stripped out). Am I correct? Is there any workaround for this?

  I'm reading the Monads chapter in Real World Haskell (chapter 14).   I've been using Bloodshed Dev-C++ for C++ programing for a while now. I'd like to get into GUI programing in C++. So I installed wxWidget and tried a simple hello world program, yet I get the following error: \Dev-Cpp\gui_at0.cpp C:\Dev-Cpp\C wx/wx.h: No such file or directory. I'm pretty sure this error is due to the wx folder not being in the right directory. Currently it's in C:. So where does it need to be moved to? Or is something else at play?

  Hello, This is hard for me to word, but easier for me to demonstrate: I have a select option: <option <?php if($frequency[$key]=='1.10'){echo "selected";}?> value='1.10'>1 every 10 days</option> Really, $frequency[$key]=1.1; , but the above still shows up selected.   I am currently trying to performance tune the UI of a company web application. The application is only ever going to be accessed by staff, so the speed of the connection between the server and client will always be considerably more than if it was on the internet. I have been using performance auditing tools such as Y Slow! and Google Chrome's profiling tool to try and highlight areas that are worth targeting for investigation. However, these tools are written with the internet in mind. For example, the current suggestions from a Google Chrome audit of the application suggests is as follows: Network Utilization Combine external CSS (Red warning) Combine external JavaScript (Red warning) Enable gzip compression (Red warning) Leverage browser caching (Red warning) Leverage proxy caching (Amber warning) Minimise cookie size (Amber warning) Parallelize downloads across hostnames (Amber warning) Serve static content from a cookieless domain (Amber warning) Web Page Performance Remove unused CSS rules (Amber warning) Use normal CSS property names instead of vendor-prefixed ones (Amber warning) Are any of these bits of advice totally redundant given the connection speed and usage pattern? The users will be using the application frequently throughout the day, so it doesn't matter if the initial hit is large (when they first visit the page and build their cache) so long as a minimal amount of work is done on future page views. For example, is it worth the effort of combining all of our CSS and JavaScript files? It may speed up the initial page view, but how much of a difference will it really make on subsequent page views throughout the working day? I've tried searching for this but all I keep coming up with is the standard internet facing performance advice. Any advice on what to focus my performance tweaking efforts on in this scenario, or other auditing tool recommendations, would be much appreciated.

  Lets say I have a really big table filled with lots of data (say, enough not to fit comfortably in memory), and I want to analyze a subset of the rows. Is it generally faster to do: SELECT (column1, column2, ... , columnN) FROM table WHERE (some complicated boolean clause); and then use the ResultSet, or is it faster to do: SELECT (column1, column2, ... , columnN) FROM table; and then iterate over the ResultSet, accepting different rows based on a java version of your boolean condition? I think it comes down to whether the Java iterator/boolean evaluator is faster than the MySQL boolean evaluator.

  I have been tasked with moving an existing MS Access application (mdb) over to an Access Data Project (adp). Basically the Access forms will remain the same but the data will be migrated over to SQL Server. I am not too familiar with Access Data Projects so I was hoping I could get some opinions on the pros and cons of using them. My first thought was to convert this to a web application or even a Winform application, however I really wanted to perform due dilligence in looking at Access Data Projects before making a decision.   So I work in a PHP shop, and we all use different editors, and we all have to work on windows. I use vim, and everyone in the shop keeps complaining that whenever I edit a file there is a newline at the bottom. I've searched around and found that this is a documented behavior of vi & vim... but I was wondering if there was some way to disable this feature. (It wouldbe best if I could disable it for specific file extensions). If anyone knows about this, that would be great!

  I know there have been several people with the same question. Which is: How do i know when a frame by frame animation has ended? I have not had any useful answer on fora i visited. So i thought, let's see if they know at stackoverflow. • Span with white-space style in IE (7) applied _past_ end of span

  We've got an application where users can enter "notes" into a rich edit control (Telerik's RedEditor, but that doesn't matter here). We had a user enter notes from w/in Safari that had a <span></span> in the middle of the note, and that span had a style on it specifying white-space:pre The HTML of the note was in the form of: <div> This is a note <span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre; "> </span> and here's more of the note. </div> Simple enough, the style should apply to the span, and the span had 4 spaces in it. There should have been 4 spaces in the resulting output. Here's the problem. IE seems to apply that white-space: pre; style not only to the span, but to the enclosing div! Therefore, this long line that should have wrapped since it's not in the span, now pushed the document out until the line fits on the page. What am I missing. I know IE has problems, but this doesn't seem right, even for IE. So, the question(s): 1) Am I correct that the white-space attribute should only have applied to the span? 2) Can this be resolved somehow? Remember, I'm not in control of the content being entered. And it's entered from a mac w/Safari and being viewed in IE.
