• How secure is encryption?

  Let me preface this by saying I know nothing about encryption. I understand the basic concept of public key / private key encryption but I don't how easily it can be broken, if at all. If one were to believe the movies, encrypted data can be broken by a teenager with a decent computer in a few hours. I have a client who wants credit card information sent via email - encrypted of course, but I'm still not feeling terribly good about the idea. I feel it would be safer to store the info on the VPS, but even then its an unmanaged server and there's nobody watching it who knows much about security. So can anyone tell me if there's a safe way to store and/or send this data out? Thanks

  Hi there, just want to ask a beginner question... here, I made some code, for understanding the concept/basic of pointer: int a=1; int *b=&a; int **c = &b; int ***d = &c; cout << &*(&*d) << endl; can someone explain to me, why the &*(&d) return address of "c" instead of address of "b"? I've also tried code like &(&(&(&*(&*d)))), but it keep return address of "c" Thanks a lot :)

  Ok, so I'm trying to do a level order traversal of a binary search tree and its not working.   I am confuse on a concept. I am doing this on rails. Is that Entity set equal to a table in the database? Is that Relationship set equal to a table in the database? Let say we have Entity set "USER" and Entity set "POST" and Entity set "COMMENT" User- can post many posts and comments as they want Post- belong to users Comments-belong to posts ,users, so comment is weak entity. SCHEMA ====== USER -id -name POST -id -user_id(FK) -comment_id (FK) COMMENT -id -user_id (FK) -post_id (FK) so USER,POST,COMMENT are tables I think. And what else is a table? And do I need a table for the relationship??

  Hello. 'Smart Tabs' concept allows to automatically insert tab character for block indentation and space characters for in-block formatting. It's described here. Unfortunately, Visual Studio's 'smart tabs' option in text editor settings just indents text on enter press. Same name, completely different and near useless thing :). So, maybe someone knows of a visual studio addin that can change how 'tab' key work so it will insert tab characters and space characters according to rules mentioned above? Any hints are welcome.

• [FLEX 3] Placing images into a Collage Canvas

  I've got an array of different sized images. I want to place these images on a canvas in a sort of automated collage. Does anyone have an idea of how to work the logic behind this concept? All my images have heights divisible by 36 pixels and widths divisible by 9 pixels. They have mouseDown functions that allow you to drag and drop. When dropped the image goes to the closest x point divisible by 9 and y point divisble by 36. There is a grid drawn on top of the canvas. I've sorted the array of images based on height, then based on their widths. imagesArray.sortOn("height", Array.NUMERIC | Array.DESCENDING); imagesArray.sortOn("width", Array.NUMERIC | Array.DESCENDING); I'd like to take the largest image ( imageArray[0] ) to put in corner x,y = 0,0. Then randomize the rest of the images and fit them into the collage canvas.

I have tried rewriting the URL, using the "from" & "to" tags, but in vain. I don't know what is the actual & correct way of doing this, as I'm a newbie in Magento. • Vim: How to exchange key bindings? (bind '|' on '7' key)

  Having the German Mac Keyboard Layout, it is a pain to type | as it is bound to <A-7> and it is hard for me to reach the Alt key. Thus, I'd like to do the following remapping (exchanging the binding for | and 7): imap 7 <Bar> imap <A-7> 7 The first one works, the second one does not. I have already tried all combinations with inor (no remap) but wasn't successful. Maybe I don't get the concept of remapping. Or I am missing something else.

  Hi, I’m currently trying to develop a method to get a overview of all my different web templates I’ve created and (legally) downloaded over the years. I thought about a displaying them like Wordpress is previewing it’s templates view a small preview windows, displaying the concrete file with styles and everything. How to divide them into rows and columns and create AJAX modal window open on preview and pagination and so on I believe I can manage, but it is the concept itself about iterate over several folders then find all index.htm / index.html pages and displaying them. I’ve not worked very much with directories in PHP and the only references and code stumps I’ve found so far is just to list all the files in a certain directory like, what it contains. I would be really grateful if someone knew about a script, a function, snippet or just could get me a nudge in the right direction to create such a (probably simple) preview function. • c++ Sorting a vector based on values of other vector, or what's faster?

  Hi, There are a couple of other posts about sorting a vector A based on values in another vector B. Most of the other answers tell to create a struct or a class to combine the values into one object and use std::sort. Though I'm curious about the performance of such solutions as I need to optimize code which implements bubble sort to sort these two vectors. I'm thinking to use a vector<pair<int,int>> and sort that. I'm working on a blob-tracking application (image analysis) where I try to match previously tracked blobs against newly detected blobs in video frames where I check each of the frames against a couple of previously tracked frames and of course the blobs I found in previous frames. I'm doing this at 60 times per second (speed of my webcam). Any advice on optimizing this is appreciated. • Handling null values with PowerShell dates

  I'm working on a module to pull data from Oracle into a PowerShell data table, so I can automate some analysis and perform various actions based on the results. Everything seems to be working, and I'm casting columns into specific types based on the column type in Oracle. The problem I'm having has to do with null dates. I can't seem to find a good way to capture that a date column in Oracle has a null value. Is there any way to cast a [datetime] as null or empty?

  I am writing a python package. I am using the concept of plugins - where each plugin is a specialization of a Worker class. Each plugin is written as a module (script?) and spawned in a separate process. Because of the base commonality between the plugins (e.g. all extend a base class 'Worker'), The plugin module generally looks like this: import commonfuncs def do_work(data): # do customised work for the plugin print 'child1 does work with %s' % data In C/C++, we have include guards, which prevent a header from being included more than once. Do I need something like that in Python, and if yes, how may I make sure that commonfuncs is not 'included' more than once?

The book states that to write great software (i.e. software that is well-designed, well-coded, easy to maintain, reuse, and extend) you need to do three things: Firstly, make sure the software does everything the customer wants it to do Once step 1 is completed, apply Object Oriented principles and techniques to eliminate any duplicate code that might have slipped in Once steps 1 and 2 are complete, then apply design patterns to make sure the software is maintainable and reusable for years to come. My question is, do you follow these steps when developing great software? If not, what steps do you usually follow inorder to ensure it's well designed, well-coded, easy to maintain, reuse and extend?

• Will an IO blocked process show 100% CPU utilization in 'top' output?

  I have an analysis that can be parallelized over a different number of processes. It is expected that things will be both IO and CPU intensive (very high throughput short-read DNA alignment if anyone is curious.) The system running this is a 48 core linux server. The question is how to determine the optimum number of processes such that total throughput is maximized. At some point the processes will presumably become IO bound such that adding more processes will be of no benefit and possibly detrimental. Can I tell from standard system monitoring tools when that point has been reached? Would the output of top (or maybe a different tool) enable me to distinguish between a IO bound and CPU bound process? I am suspicious that a process blocked on IO might still show 100% CPU utilization.

  I'm developing a class library. Need some data from internet and this cannot be done with HttpWebRequest in my case so I wanna use WebBrowser component. WebBrowser is used for opening a single page and fetch some data from it, so WebBrowser life-time is very short. Running thread is MTA and no message pump or STA thread is available by default (class library is used by an ASP.NET application). How to create a WebBrowser object, run it with a STA thread, fetch data from a web page and finally dispose it with the least performance impact on the application ? • What's the status of the HTML 5 <video> tag and webcam integration?

  Even though it seems to be in some kind of jeopardy, the open video standard is a great idea. I saw some demos on motion tracking with it - just proofs-of-concept, but interesting nonetheless. Now, I'd say that concepts like these would really be a gain, if there would be access to the user's webcam... Just imagine browsing through Flickr with your hands in mid-air. I have Googled a little, but I can't find any detailed discussion on the subject. It is mentioned in some places, but that doesn't get me very far. Does anybody know whether support for this is planned? If yes, any prognosis on the 'when'? ;-) Of course, I guess they'd have to dream up a pretty good security model for it...

  Hi all I wrote a control, and use a tool to do the code analysis. There is a test that I didn't pass. Avoid excessive locals, http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/ms182263(VS.90).aspx. In my CreateChildControls function, I built a big table with lots of field. I need to create a lot of TableRow and TableCell to construct the table. But these are not field or property of control. Thery are local variables in the function, which are created dynamically. Should I make these TableCells and TableRows as fields of the control? • What is the right way to implement communication between java objects?

  I'm working on an academic project which simulates a rather large queuing procedure in java. The core of the simulator rests within one package where there exist 8 classes, each one implementing a single concept. Every class in the project follows SRP. These classes encapsulate the behavior of the simulator and inter-connect every other class in the project. The problem that has arisen is that most of these 8 classes are, as is logical i think, tightly coupled and each one has to have working knowledge of every other class in this package in order to be able to call methods from it when needed. The application needs only one instance of each class so it might be better to create static fields for each class in a new class and use that to make calls -instead of preserving a reference in each class for every other class in the package (which I'm certain that is incorrect)-, but is this considered a correct design solution? or is there a design pattern maybe that better suits my needs?

  Basically I have a proof-of-concept application that is a digital recipe book. Each Recipe is an object and each object has, among other fields, a Vector containing arrays. The Vector is the list of all ingredients in the Recipe while each ingredient has an array showing the name of the ingredient, the amount, and the unit for that amount. I want to save each Recipe to XML so that they can be accessed by the user. How can I store a Vector of String arrays in XML or any other sort of file so that it can later be recalled and accessed?

  I have a Java program on my desktop which displays financial data gleaned from the web. It is a 3rd party application. What I would like to do is intercept the data before it goes to the Java application and record it into a flat file for the purpose of later data analysis. Is this at all possible? I imagine the data are available and are entering my computer through some port which the Java app picks up and then displays. Help appreciated. Thanks
