• How can I recover from a frozen app when connecting over VNC

  I have a htpc running 10.10. It has no keyboard or mouse attached, so I connect over vnc for administration and manual tasks. This usually works fine but every so often an app running in fullscreen mode crashes. All I want to be able to do is kill this app from VNC. Is there a keyboard shortcut to do this that will preserve the VNC connection? If I use CTRL + ALT + F1, I see the terminal but can no longer control it from VNC. Trying to return to the desktop doesn't work either? Any easy process I can follow?

• Level and Player objects - which should contain which?

  I've been working on a several simple games, and I've always come to a decision point where I have to choose whether to have the Level object as an attribute of the Player class or the Player as an attribute of the Level class. I can see arguments for both: The Level should contain the player because it also contains every other entity. In fact it just makes sense this way: "John is in the room." It makes it a bit more difficult to move the player to a new level, however, because then each level has to pass its player object to an upcoming level. On the other hand, it makes programming sense to me to leave the player as the top-level object that is persistent between levels, and the environment changes because the player decides to change his level and location. It becomes very easy to change levels, because all I have to do is replace the level variable on the player. What's the most common practice here? Or better yet, is there a "right" way to architecture this relationship?

• Looking for a modern payment processor which accepts adult sites

  I love how easy authorize.net is to use, but they don't accept adult sites. I am lanching an adult site soon but I can't find any good credit card processors I can use. Most sites use CCbill or Epoch but they are both terrible since the customer is redirected to their external site which also has an ancient 1990's look. It's not like authorize.net's API that you can query and get the result back as to whether the payment went through or not. This makes authorize.net blend seamlessly with the product. But since adult sites are against their TOS and also paypals, what is a good alternative? I am looking for one that won't redirect the user from my site, is big enough to be reliable and trustworthy and has fairly low rates. Any help is appreciated!

• No windows whatsoever after compiz reset

  Currently using 12.04. This time I was trying to use the application switcher, and it asked me to resolve a few conflicts most of which were not easy to comprehend. So after some yes and no dialogue boxes leading me nowhere, I thought a reset should set things fine. However, after preferences-reset to default, I can't see any window!! NONE whatsoever except the log out one when I press ctrl+alt+del All I can see is the wallpaper and the mouse pointer. I cant even see the terminal or anything when I press alt+f2. I am posting this when I switch to ubuntu 2d (I cant make out the difference between the two, but this just works for now almost the same way)

• Using EPEL repos with Oracle Linux

  There's a Fedora project called EPEL which hosts a set of additional packages that can be installed on top of various distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Scientific Linux and of course also Oracle Linux. These packages are not distributed by the distribution vendor and as such also not supported by the vendors (including Oracle) however for users that want to pick up some extras that are useful, it's very easy to do this. All you need to do is download the EPEL RPM from the website, install it on Oracle Linux 5 or Oracle Linux 6 and run yum install or yum search to get the packages. example : # wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # rpm -ivh epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # yum repolist Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin repo id repo name status epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 7,124 The folks that build these repositories are doing a great job at adding very useful packages. They are free, but also unsupported of course.

  Compiling is easy but when using java to run the programs, it gives Exception found. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 without internet connections. Also, installed Oracle JDK7 and JRE7. Also did the update-alternatives command on java, javac and javaws. Changed the machine java in /etc/profiles. PATH is pointing to oracle java folder. I did many searches on Google about this topic but each time jdk and jre version are different. Also check version of jdk and jre using java -version and javac - version. Both of them are the same. The system also contains OpenJdk6 and OpenJdk7. So, how do I remove these errors?

• Icon zoom on gnome panel with mouseover?

  I'm actually quite surprised that I couldn't find any information regarding this question through simple google-ing; I would think that it was something of a no-brainer kind of question. I'm basically trying to figure out if there's any way to have the icons in the side panel/favorites bar magnify as you mouseover them, much like you'd see in any the popular launcher programs (i.e. rocket dock or apple's launcher)? I'm on a netbook with a rather limited amount of screen real estate to work with, so the icons depicting my "favorite applications" have been reduced to a permanent, unsatisfying handful of pixels. Again, it seems to me that this should be a fairly obvious feature to include in the options for the panel, so I'm hoping that there's an easy solution. • Phone pictures not showing in UbuntuOne folder on computer

  I downloaded the Android app for my phone and set it up to move my pictures from the phone into UbuntuOne. When I go to the UbuntuOne web site the folder shows up and I can view the pictures after I download them. But when I open the UbuntuOne folder on my laptop, the folder with the pictures from my phone isn't listed. How can I get the picture folder to show up in the UbuntuOne folder on my laptop? I was hoping this would be an easy way to get photos from phone to computer.

I read a lot how some "new" thing was already present in Lisp like 60 years ago, but only recently resurface with other name or on top of another language. Now look like the new old thing is build functional, non-mutable, non-locking-thread stuff... and that make me wonder what have been "lost" in the art of development of software? What ideas are almost forgotten, waiting for resurface? One of my, I remember when I code in foxpro. The idea of have a full stack to develop database apps without impedance mismatch is something I truly miss. In the current languages, I never find another environment that match how easy was develop in fox back them. What else is missing?

• How to restore GRUB without re-installing the OS?

  A friend of mine has a Packard Bell laptop that came with Windows pre-installed. I installed Ubuntu on it and it works fine, but everytime she tried to boot Windows on it (fortunately rarely) it fails and the computer is unable to boot any OS anymore. Upon boot, the computer stops on a black screen with a GRUB Rescue prompt. Is there any way to restore GRUB without re-installing Ubuntu? (preferably an easy way as I cannot do it for her and she is not extremely computer literate) Also (but less important), is there a way to configure GRUB (or something else) so that Windows won't destroy it on every boot attempt?

  When using Robocopy to backup data to a NAS, I always had the problem that most files were considered “old” on the NAS device (even if they weren’t) – that kind of defeats the purpose of the /MIR switch. Today I finally decided to search for a solution – and it was remarkably easy. Most NAS devices use Samba or something similar to provide “NTFS shares” – but most of them only implement FAT-style file times with a 2-second-granularity. You can force robocopy to use FAT file time as well using the /FFT switch. Now my backup script works again as expected. See also here.

(Assume we are using a HTML5 compatible browser) The main things I can think of Rendering text on screen Animating sprites (using images/css) Input (capturing the arrow keys and getting relative mouse positions) Perhaps some preloading resource or dynamically loading resources and choosing order Sound (but I am unsure how important this will be to me at first).   I've been having trouble with this because I'm new to Linux: I would like to convert different video formats to ogv. I found some terminal commands like this: ffmpeg -i input.avi -acodec libvorbis -ac 1 -b 768k output.ogg The problem with these type of commands is that they are intended to change bit rate, fps, or even resolution. I would like to just change the file format without changing anything else about the video. I looked at the man pages for ffmpeg and found some useful info but I don't know how to space command-line options. Are there any easy ways to do this? In addition, is there a command to change the bit rate so that it doesn't go over a certain rate?
