  • What's the most durable netbook

    - by Keyslinger
    I'm about to spend more than two years in Latin America and I know from experience that not all computer equipment can handle the shifts temperature, air moisture, and other atmospheric variables as well as the generally greater number of shocks and jostles presented by developing-world transportation and unstable infrastructure/power grid. Is there any particular manufacturer, brand, or model of netbook or notebook that stands above the rest in terms of durability and ability to survive in harsh environments?

  • Random password generator: many, in columns, on command line, in Linux

    - by Adam Backstrom
    A while back, I came across a random password generator for the command line that displayed a grid of "memorable" passwords. Output was something like this: adam@host:~$ CantRememberThisCommand lkajsdf aksjdfl kqwrupo qwerpoi qwerklw zxlkelq The idea was that you could run this utility while someone was looking over your shoulder, and still pick a password with some level of secrecy due to the large number of choices. I cannot remember what this utility was called. Oh interwebs, can you help?

  • What are optimal strategies for using mapreduce and other applications on the same server?

    - by user45532
    I have two applications that I need to run continuously to process data. 1.) An app that processes and aggregates information from sources 2.) A mapreduce workflow* that processes the above info I've thought about either getting vps hosting or getting my own inexpensive server and using xen to split the resources of the server. Getting a quad core box with 2 GB of Ram seems a lot cheaper than the grid options I've seen at slicehost, rackspace and others...

  • Maximum number of monitors Win 7 Supports?

    - by cpuguru
    I want to set up a system with (9) monitors arranged in a 3x3 grid. Is this configuration possible with Windows 7? Does it max out at a set number of monitors? Any suggestions about known working hardware combinations would be much appreciated. Currently considering (3) nVidia Quadro NVS420 cards to drive the array.

  • jqGrid - Problems opening in jquery tabs (on Firefox and Google Chrome)

    - by Ben Hargreaves
    I have developed a very simple MVC app to test out trirand's jqGrid for MVC. The app opens a jqgrid in a jquery tab group and everything is ok with IE. However when I use Firefox jqgrid only opens occasionaly in the first tab (but not under any other tab), and in Chrome my jqgrids dont appear to open under any tab of the group. I'm a bit of an MVC newbie (and have only been testing jqgrid out for a few days), but I know my users will want to use different browsers. Trirand have not come back with any answer so wondered if anyone else had had a similar issue. I have really just implemented jqgrid as per the controllers and model in the sample application on the Trirand site, and then combined it with a straightforward jquery tab group. My MVC Details Page is as follows; <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<PRAMSAPP.Models.Family>" %> <%@ Import Namespace="Trirand.Web.Mvc" %> <%@ Import Namespace="PRAMSAPP.Controllers" %> <%@ Import Namespace="PRAMSAPP.Models" %> <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="TitleContent" runat="server"> Details </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/scripts/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.css" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="/scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/scripts/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.min.js"></script> <fieldset> <legend>Family</legend> <div class="display-field"><%= Html.Encode(Model.FamilyID) %></div> <div class="display-field"><%= Html.Encode(Model.FamilySurname) %></div> </fieldset> <div id="tabs"> <ul> <li> <%= Html.ActionLink("GridChildren", "GridDemo", new { controller = "Grid", id = Model.FamilyID })%> </li> <li> <%= Html.ActionLink("Children", "ShowFamiliesChildren", new { famid = Model.FamilyID, page = Page})%> </li> </ul> </div> <p> <%= Html.ActionLink("Edit", "Edit", new { id=Model.FamilyID }) %> | <%= Html.ActionLink("Back to List", "Index") %> </p> <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { $('#tabs').tabs(); }); </script> </asp:Content> And My Controller page is as follows; <%@ Page Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<PRAMSAPP.Models.FamiliesChildrenJqGridModel>" %> <%@ Import Namespace="Trirand.Web.Mvc" %> <%@ Import Namespace="PRAMSAPP.Controllers" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" > <head id="Head1" runat="server"> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <!-- The jQuery UI theme that will be used by the grid --> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" href="/Content/themes/redmond/jquery-ui-1.7.1.custom.css" /> <!-- The Css UI theme extension of jqGrid --> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" href="/Content/themes/ui.jqgrid.css" /> <!-- jQuery library is a prerequisite for jqGrid --> <script type="text/javascript" src="/Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js"></script> <!-- language pack - MUST be included before the jqGrid javascript --> <script type="text/javascript" src="/Scripts/grid.locale-en.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/Scripts/jqgrid/jquery.jqGrid.min.js"></script> </head> <body> <div> <%= Html.Trirand().JQGrid(Model.FamiliesChildrenGrid, "JQGrid1") %> </div> </body>

    I'm interested in creating realtime visual special effects. I am limited to OpenGL (in particular, computing power of a MacBook Pro). I want to learn more about doing cool UI/special effects (think the "computers/displays" in Iron Man / Avatar). What are good books/resources for this? Thanks!

  • Algorithm putting point into square with maximal minimum distance

    - by Mikulas Dite
    I'm stuck on this: Have a square. Put n points into this square so the minimal distance (not necessary the average distance) is the highest possible. I'm looking for an algorithm which would be able to generate the coordinates of all points given the count of them. Example results for n=4;5;6: Please don't mention computing-power based stuff such as trying a lot of combination and then nitpicking the right one and similar ideas.

  • What parts of this book are outdated? "Design of the UNIX Operating System" by Maurice Bach, 1986

    - by blee
    I learned programming on the job via high-level languages. I'm trying to gain a better understanding of the lower-level workings of computing and picked up "Design of the UNIX Operating System" by Maurice Bach. What do I need to know in terms of which topics in this book may not be relevant to understanding Linux nuts and bolts? Is there a newer book or Linux-specific book that I should read instead? I really like the clarity of this particular book, though.

  • Search Complexity of a Hashtable within a Hashtable?

    - by spacker_lechuck
    Say we have a hashtable of size m, and at each bucket we store a hashtable of size p. What would the worst case/average case search complexity be? I am inclined to say that since computing a hash function is still atomic, the only worst case scenario is if the value is at the end of the linked list in the hashtable of size p, so O(n)? I have no idea how to calculate the average case for this scenario and would appreciate any pointers!

  • Significant events in Computer Science

    - by Brabster
    What were the most significant events or milestones in the history of computer science? I haven't been able to find a potted history, so I thought I'd see what views the SO community had on the question. I'm studying for a Masters in CS at the moment, so I'm hoping for some stuff to go take a look at that I've not come across before. Related: Computer science advances in past 5 years Significant new inventions in computing since 1980

  • Faster integer division when denominator is known?

    - by aaa
    hi I am working on GPU device which has very high division integer latency, several hundred cycles. I am looking to optimize divisions. All divisions by denominator which is in a set { 1,3,6,10 }, however numerator is a runtime positive value, roughly 32000 or less. due to memory constraints, lookup table is not option. Can you think of alternatives? I have thought of computing float point inverses, and using those to multiply numerator. Thanks

  • Click edit button twice in gridview asp.net c# issue

    - by Supriyo Banerjee
    I have a gridview created on a page where I want to provide an edit button for the user to click in. However the issue is the grid view row becomes editable only while clicking the edit button second time. Not sure what is going wrong here, any help would be appreciated. One additional point is my grid view is displayed on the page only on a click of a button and is not there on page_load event hence. Posting the code snippets: //MY Aspx code <Columns> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Slice" SortExpression="name"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblslice" Text='<%# Eval("slice") %>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblslice" Text='<%# Eval("slice") %>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Metric" SortExpression="Description"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblmetric" Text='<%# Eval("metric")%>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblmetric" Text='<%# Eval("metric")%>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Original" SortExpression="Type"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lbloriginal" Text='<%# Eval("Original")%>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lbloriginal" Text='<%# Eval("Original")%>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="WOW" SortExpression="Market"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblwow" Text='<%# Eval("WOW")%>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblwow" Text='<%# Eval("WOW")%>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Change" SortExpression="Market" > <ItemTemplate> <asp:Label ID="lblChange" Text='<%# Eval("Change")%>' runat="server"></asp:Label> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <asp:TextBox ID="TxtCustomerID" Text='<%# Eval("Change") %> ' runat="server"></asp:TextBox> </EditItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:CommandField HeaderText="Edit" ShowEditButton="True" /> </Columns> </asp:GridView> //My code behind: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } public void populagridview1(string slice,string fromdate,string todate,string year) { SqlCommand cmd; SqlDataAdapter da; DataSet ds; cmd = new SqlCommand(); cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; cmd.CommandText = "usp_geteventchanges"; cmd.Connection = conn; conn.Open(); SqlParameter param1 = new SqlParameter("@slice", slice); cmd.Parameters.Add(param1); SqlParameter param2 = new SqlParameter("@fromdate", fromdate); cmd.Parameters.Add(param2); SqlParameter param3 = new SqlParameter("@todate", todate); cmd.Parameters.Add(param3); SqlParameter param4 = new SqlParameter("@year", year); cmd.Parameters.Add(param4); da = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd); ds = new DataSet(); da.Fill(ds, "Table"); GridView1.DataSource = ds; GridView1.DataBind(); conn.Close(); } protected void ImpactCalc(object sender, EventArgs e) { populagridview1(ddl_slice.SelectedValue, dt_to_integer(Picker1.Text), dt_to_integer(Picker2.Text), Txt_Year.Text); } protected void GridView1_RowEditing(object sender, GridViewEditEventArgs e) { gvEditIndex = e.NewEditIndex; Gridview1.DataBind(); } My page layout This edit screen appears after clicking edit twice.. the grid view gets displayed on hitting the Calculate impact button.   • Why a different SHA-1 for the same file under windows or linux?

    - by Fabio Vitale
    Why on the same machine computing the SHA-1 hash of the same file produces two completely different SHA-1 hashes in windows and inside a msysgit Git bash? Doesn't the SHA-1 algorithm was intended to produce the same hash for the same file in all OSes? On windows (with HashCheck): File hello.txt 22596363b3de40b06f981fb85d82312e8c0ed511 Inside a msysgit's Git bash windows (same machine, same file): $ git hash-object hello.txt 3b18e512dba79e4c8300dd08aeb37f8e728b8dad

  • Summary of the last decade of garbage collection?

    - by Ben Karel
    I've been reading through the Jones & Lin book on garbage collection, which was published in 1996. Obviously, the computing world has changed dramatically since then: multicore, out-of-order chips with large caches, and even larger main memory in desktops. The world has also more-or-less settled on the x86 and ARM microarchitectures for most consumer-facing systems. How has the field of garbage collection changed since the seminal book was published?
