  • Where/When does C# and the .NET Framework fail to be the right tool?

    In my non-programming life, I always attempt to use the approprite tool for the job, and I feel that I do the same in my programming life, but I find that I am choosing C# and .NET for almost everything. I'm finding it hard to come up with (realistic business) needs that cannot be met by .NET and C#. Obviously embedded systems might require something less bloated than the .NET Micro Framework, but I'm really looking for line of business type situations where .NET is not the best tool. I'm primarly a C# and .NET guy since its what I'm the most comfertable in, but I know a fair amount of C++, php, VB, powershell, batch files, and Java, as well as being versed in the web technologes (javascript, html/css). But I'm open minded about it my skill set and I'm looking for cases where C# and .NET are not the right tool for the job. The bottom line here, is that I feel that I'm choosing C# and .NET simply because I am very comfertable with it, so I'm looking for cases where you have chosen something other than .NET, even though you are primarly a .NET developer.

I'm doing a jquery Ajax post, for some reason the Json object isn't working so just returning a php array instead $.post ( "classes/RegisterUser.php", $("#frmRegistration").serialize(), function(data) { alert(data); } ); The data is returned to Javascript 100% as array ( [key]=>value [Name] => SomeOneName [Surname] => SomeOneSurName ) How would i go about getting the value of Surname in Javascript?   • Checking if a console application is still running using the Process class

    I'm making an application that will monitor the state of another process and restart it when it stops responding, exits, or throws an error. However, I'm having trouble to make it reliably check if the process (Being a C++ Console window) has stopped responding. However, this never triggers the process class recognizing it as 'stopped responding'. I know there are ways to directly query the source server using their own protocol, but i'd like to keep it simple and universal (So that i can maybe use it for different applications in the future). Any help appreciated

    Hello Is there a good overview of tcp data path in Linux (2.6, not 2.4 if the path actually differ)? Where is a packet on different stages of tcp/ip stack handling? How packet is packed to tcp segment, then ip packet. How it is transmitted to network card? (with series of I/O regs write and DMA?) Is it transmitted to network card in the "write" syscall handler (with some deep callstack) or is it transmitted at some other moment?

  • Leverage cloud and programming to share GB's of photos

    My friends and I went on a trip and we have over 8 GB of photos we want to share. We live in different geographic locations and all of us (14 people) have a part of the 8 GB. I was wondering if there's a way to leverage my php skills to share all these photos. My current plan is to make a simple site that you can upload a bunch of files and also list those files for people to download (probably a compressed folder of a bunch of selected ones) but was wondering if there's a better way or if I'm grossly underestimating scalability issues. All of us have high speed internet (essentially T1) and I was planning on using Amazon EC2 since this is a heavy task but for a short time period. That's also the reason I can't use dropbox or similar services since they have a 2GB cap (and I don't want to have everyone sign up and install something). I also don't want to set up anything too tricky since not all of them are tech savvy.

    Related: In .NET, how do I Create a Junction in NTFS, as opposed to a Symlink? I've tried Winbolic (Windows XP), but i can't get it to work the way I want. Am I wrong here?: If I create a symbolic link within a folder in my %PATH%, the referenced directory should work as if it had actually been added to %PATH%, right?

  • Avoid application becoming unresponsive on download

    Hi I have an application which downloads a file from a network location and then displays that files information. It uses WebClient.DownloadFile to achieve this. The problem is, when the user clicks a button to start the download, the application becomes unresponsive until the file has downloaded. This gives the impression the application may have hung. I would like to seek ideas which would avoid this scenario. Though my solution will need to be 'as quick and cheap as possible' I would be interested in hearing about custom loaders that have been built, or some sort of loading symbol / progress bar / sand time clock thingy : ) Thanks for reading.

  • Python programming. Accessing Windows rigth click menu options

    I'm hoping to automate a few tasks at work. One of them being combining and converting power point files to PDFs. I'm a bit of a newbie (I just finished Magus Heitland's Beginning Python), so I'm not entirely sure what I'm specifically asking. On windows, one can select multiple files, right click, and select combine as adobe PDF. I've figured out the 'grouping' of the files I want to convert (I traverse the dir and nest the files inside of a list based on their names), but I'm unsure how to pursue the next step (the rightclick/combine command). Googling has led me to things like win32api, pywinauto, and ctypes. But as I read over what they do my newbieness prevents me from knowing which is the tool I need. Could any one suggest a few good resources or tips?

  • Bug in Programming Interviews Exposed?

    Hi, I could not find an errata for the 2nd edition of this book. My question concerns the if-statement in the following piece of code. void removeHead (Node ** head) { Node * temp; if (!(*head)) { temp = (*head)->next; delete *head; *head = temp; } } So I understand that the point of the if-statement is to check if the Node is null. However by adding an additional "!" to the evaluation, wouldn't this negate the false value of null? Would it be correct to change it to something like: if (*head) { ... } Also if anyone knows where I can find an official errata for the 2nd edition that would be great. Thanks, Sam

    Hi there, I'm a newbie in the field, but in the near future I have to develop an application for a friend(I've already did some work of the app and the friend is happy). I assume that I need 3 places to store my work, but I'm not sure if this is the best approach. I need your advice, opinion, link,book, blog about this subject. I plan to have: a place where I develop the application a place where I keep a back-up of the application a place with the application ready for use I'll use git in the development stage, but for the later I don't know what tools to use, or which are the good practices.     I've decided to get some experience working on some project this summer. Due to local demand on market I would prefer to learn Java (Standard and Enterprise Editions). But I can't even to conjecture what kind of project to do. Recently I had some ideas about C. With C I could to contribute to huge Linux projects. I don't mean that my work will be surely commited. I could get the code and practice with it. But C it's not right thing to get good job in my area. In case of JavaSE there is a chance to develop some desktop applications.
