• Skipping scheduled self-tests and predicting drive EOL

  For a few weeks now, smartd has been reporting that it is skipping some of its scheduled self-tests on the weekends: Apr 24 18:29:32 calvin smartd[4758]: Device: /dev/sda, skip scheduled Offline Immediate Test; 40% remaining of current Self-Test. Apr 24 18:29:33 calvin smartd[4758]: Device: /dev/sdb, skip scheduled Offline Immediate Test; 50% remaining of current Self-Test. The drives in this RAID-1 array are set to run an offline test four times a day, a short self-test at 2am every day, and a long self-test on Saturdays at 2am. For some reason, it looks like the long self-test is taking longer, causing the other scheduled tests to be skipped. First question: is this a sign of likely drive failure? Then today, smartd reported that a self-test failed. • Forgot to unmount/eject external hdd, lost moved files. OSX

  So I was using my mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10gigs of data to it (via drag and drop while holding command to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive alright, but as I was having some issues and finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hdd back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. How can I recover these files, as it was a lot of data! Cheers.

• Virtual Box fails my OSes :(

  I have a little problem with Virtual Box latest version in which i have installed Mint (also latest version).During creation of a new vdi partition I chose settings as default, that is, I don't create any tiny partitions myself. The installation works. But later while the new OS is running (not in Live mode) I try installing/updating new software available, the system automatically fails, it reports an error of DISKFULL, I close the message box then power off my system. Later on I can't boot it up again anymore. It hangs with a black screen and the PAUSE status. I have no idea why. I have installed 2 OSes and both fail at the same error. I doubt something is not right about the current version of VBox. Thank you . My host OS is Windows7 and my Clients are Mint and CentOS

• Can a Shadow Copy of SQL 2000 databases files be used as a restore?

  Howdy, I have a SQL 2000 instance (version 8.00.760) that is on a drive that gets regular shadow copies. Can a shadow copy be used to restore the database? It seems possible to stop the SQL service, restore the Data folder from the shadow copy (includes msdb, master, model, temp, and the user databases, then restart the service. Would the files be in a crash consistent case in the worst case? If so, when restarting the service wouldn't it recover as if the power were pulled from the server? Thank you, Keith

• Firefox 3.5.6 Uninstaller not working

  Hi all, I want to uninstall Firefox 3.5.6 in favor of Opera 10.10. However, I've went into Control Panel Add or Remove Programs and tried clicking Remove from there, but nothing happens. I go into the Program Files for FIrefox and find the Uninstaller folder and click the helper.exe found in there. Still, nothing happens. Is there some possible way to uninstall Firefox without screwing up the rest of my computer? • Fullscreen Video stutters on second monitor laptop

  Fullscreen video on my new 1080p monitor is choppy when it comes from my laptop. The same video plays when not full screen. This goes for all video(Flash/MKV, etc), regardless of video resolution. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series card in my Thinkpad Edge, Turion X2 2GHz. The computer plays 1080p fine. • Engineers are using explosives to remove hard rock outside our office building. What countermeasures should we take?

  Our building is located approx. 100 meters from the explosive charges. They happen several times per day, and really shake the entire building a lot. This is going to go on for many days and the blasts are supposed to get stronger. Our server rooms are nothing fancy; one of them has all the racks on hard concrete while the other one has a raised floor (the one which allows the cables to go beneath it). Does anyone have any tips, countermeasures or best practices for us? Currently we are thinking of the following countermeasures: Daily report of the server rooms status lights (HD lights, power supplies and so on). • Implementing a popularity algorithm in Django

  I am creating a site similar to reddit and hacker news that has a database of links and votes. I am implementing hacker news' popularity algorithm and things are going pretty swimmingly until it comes to actually gathering up these links and displaying them. The algorithm is simple: Y Combinator's Hacker News: Popularity = (p - 1) / (t + 2)^1.5` Votes divided by age factor. Where` p : votes (points) from users. t : time since submission in hours. p is subtracted by 1 to negate submitter's vote. Age factor is (time since submission in hours plus two) to the power of 1.5.factor is (time since submission in hours plus two) to the power of 1.5. I asked a very similar question over yonder http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1964395/complex-ordering-in-django but instead of contemplating my options I choose one and tried to make it work because that's how I did it with PHP/MySQL but I now know Django does things a lot differently.   I would like to setup a machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core and install following server roles: Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Federation Services Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (I'm not sure whether I actually need this one - see note below) I'm obviously going to install Enterprise Edition. Question Can I have an AD administration graphical user interface to manage Active Directory on Server Core machine? I would really like to have it, because I'm not so keen to do stuff using power-shell, because I've never managed AD as well, so a GUI would be much more helpful, because I could at least visualize it a bit better and maybe understand AD structures. Note: I'm setting up development environment machine as well and installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 on in so it would use this AD machine.

• Reading PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5 files in an XP or Windows 98 environment

  Hello all, My priest has 3 computers, Windows 3.1, Windows 98 and Windows XP. Recently his power supply blew out on his Windows 3.1 computer and he needs to get to the data on the hard drive. He's looking into imaging the hard drive and setting it up as a VM, which might be a bit much for him. Ignoring getting the data off the hard drive as a separate problem, are there any programs out there that can read files from PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5. He already has Microsoft Office so solutions involving that are preferable. If he can install the software on his Windows XP or 98 computer, that would be helpful too. Thank you for your help

• My Unicomp Model M is double-striking on a key. What to do?

  I realize this isn't strictly a computer-related question, but I figured that if there's any place to go for help about a broken keyboard, it would be a power users' forum. The O key on my Unicomp Model M has the tendency to strike twice. In other words, I press the key once, and it sends out two letters. There is probably a mechanical solution to this, but I'm not familiar enough with how these things work to come up with a fix myself. Has anyone had this problem?

• Windows 7 - Runs in safe mode, crashes in "normal" mode

  A couple of days ago I came back from a meeting to find my laptop had locked up. Power lights still on but the screen was blank (by which I mean black, though still "backlit" so not dead). Didn't respond to anything. I rebooted and it powered up fine and I got to the login screen. I logged in and it seemed to be going fine for about 30 seconds (gmail notifier and pidgin popped up) then the same thing happened - black screen. If I boot into Safe Mode it's all fine, no problems. I've tried removing everything from the startup folders (All users and my login), everything from the Run section of the registry (Local Machine and my login) and I've disabled every service which doesn't run in Safe Mode (assuming anything running in safe mode is OK) but the problem still exists. I've scanned the memory for errors (all fine). Any thoughts on what else I could try?

• Slow Network Performance with Windows Server 2008 SP1

  I recently installed Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2008. Since that time, network performance has been awful. Both Windows 7 and Mac Snow Leopard clients have seen miserable speeds when trying to read or write to the server. This is the exact update: Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 x64 Edition (KB976932) It's a very simple file server setup. No Domain or Active Directory. Essentially just shared folders. It's Windows Web Server that I'm running. Are there any settings I can tweak? Should I roll back the update (doesn't seem wise)? Update: I've turned off the Power Management for the Network Adapter. That may help. If it doesn't have to be powered on at the start of a request, it should speed things up. Or so I would assume.

• Raid HDD Boot up

  My server is Power Edge 1950 running server 2008 32Bit, using 3 Physical SAS HDD as a Virtual 2 Disk configured for RAID5, with partition of C drive as OS and D drive as Data. Planning to format and install Server 2008 R2 64Bit so I insert a New Physical disk and configured as RAID5 and clone the C drive and D drive to the new hard disk. Now I need to test that the new hard disk is able to boot windows and work as expected. How do I test, I am not able to boot the windows by choosing the new harddisk, the bios show only the existing HDD, not the new one. Also, if I remove the old three hard disk, and leave the new harddisk and then am I able to boot the device, if I do this does my existing RAID5 configuration and data on the hard disk still remain.

• How to recover basic networking utilities on Debian?

When I restarted it no network interfaces were available and configured. I tried restarting networking daemon but it just exited with 0 status. So I tried to run one of the interfaces manually, but ifup and ifdown commands simply are not there. No only in PATH, but they disappeared from /sbin. So my question is: how can I recover these network utilities?

• Dedicated GPU in Dell PowerEdge C1100

  We recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge C1100 off lease with the initention of using it for graphics processing. We installed an AMD HD 7000 series GPU in it that runs off of board power and it sends video to the display. That said, the video is very choppy, leading us to belive that the onboard video is doing all the processing and sending it to the card. Is there any way to either disable the VGA on this server or tell the OS to only use the dedicated card. More info: The server is running REHL 6.4 The graphics running the proprietary AMD drivers The video card only works in OS and does not show the BIOS on boot (we know that it's impossible to change this) Any ideas, guys? Update We are now thinking that the GPU is doing the graphics processing, but not working at the full speed of the PCI bus. Which is odd, because it is an x16 slot, but probably optimized to use a RAID card (if that makes any sense). Is there any way to remedy the choppy graphics on this server?

• How should I remotely manage Dell Poweredge 2850 running Ubuntu server?

  First I've got to say I'm a Linux / Ubuntu novice, so go gentle on me as I'm on day 3. I've managed to get Ubuntu server Ubuntu 8.04 LTS installed and running on the Poweredge 1850 I bought off ebay. The box will go in a rack at my office but I want to be able to work on it and power on and off from home and I gather that (maybe) IPMI over LAN might be the way to do this, or maybe its something to do with BMC or something? I want to be able to administer/manage from a client PC at home running XP. I will be configuring the office router to port forward port 80 and 443 to the Ubuntu server running Apache2, and I'm puzzled about how the remote management works (unless it comes on a different port forwarded to a different internal IP) Thanks for any help

• Program complains not enough disk space even if the disk space exists

  I have an EXT3 partition mounted in ordered data mode. If a power failure occurs when a program is creating files on that partition, I see that space usage reported is normal and I don't see any partial written files. But when I try to run the same program again after the system comes back up it complains that there is not enough disk space. Even though the free space reported is far more than required. The program always succeeds in normal conditions. Also the problem seems to disappear when the partition is remounted. I was wondering what could be the right way to handle the situation other than unmounting and remounting.

• How do you change your Airport or Ethernet MAC address in Mac OS X 10.6?

  I have a MacBook Pro and would like to set a custom MAC address for either my Airport WiFi card, or Ethernet port. In older versions of Mac OS X, you could do it like this: $ sudo ifconfig en0 ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 // Ethernet $ sudo ifconfig en1 lladdr AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF // Airport For it to work on Airport, you'd have to power it on (e.g. $ sudo ifconfig en1 up), ensure it's not connected to any wireless network, and execute the command. I'm aware such a change won't propagate across reboots. Unfortunately, this doesn't work on Mac OS X 10.6.6 anymore. Apple appears to have removed the functionality (the command fails silently). • Lock screen keeps making sound when screen is off

  I have my laptop (Asus UL20FT) on external power and hooked up to an external monitor. I keep the laptop lid closed and am using the 'second screen only' option. If you leave it on the lock screen for a short period of time the screen powers off. While the screen is off it keeps repeating a "duuuh duh duh" sound (sounds just like the device plugged in sound). The monitor is connected via HDMI and I have Microsoft and Logitech wireless USB dongles plugged in. How can I prevent this sound loop?

  After installing GNU/Linux today onto my Lenovo Y570 laptop, I ran into an issue quickly - the USB 3.0 support. 2/3 of my USB ports are 3.0 so I kind of need them. The ports are powered at the very least - my phone is charging from one, however, plugging in external drives, USB drives, or even a mouse gives no response. The drives spin up, etc, but they do nothing more than that. So there is power, but no information flowing to them. What am I missing here? What can I try to enable to make things work?

• Major Issue with Asus M4A78T-E Bios

  I am having major issues with my bios and I have tried three different forums in hopes that there is someone out there that can help me.... The issue is that every single time I turn off my computer, when I turn it back on the bios resets and tries to boot from a floppy drive....first problem is I dont have a floppy drive and secondly it does not read my HDD.... I tried everything to fix this...I tried replacing the cmos battery, I tried replacing the sata cable, and I tried a different sata port....none of these things seem to be working. Now the messed up part about all of this is that i am on my computer right now....If I take the battery out and put it back in and setup the bios again manually I am able to get into my computer...but this is NOT normal... Why is my bios resetting constantly when I power down my computer? Please assist me I need my computer for business
