    Hi! I've been using for more than 12 years PHP with Apache (a.k.a mod_php) for my web development work. I've recenlty discovered python and its real power (I still don't understand why this is not always the best product that becomes the most famous). I've just discovered mod_python for Apache. I've already googled but without success things like mod_python vs mod_php. I wanted to know the differences between the two mod_php and mod_python in terms of: speed productivity maintainance (I know `python is most productive and maintainable language in the world, but is it the same for Web programming with Apache) availability of features e.g, cookies and session handling, databases, protocols, etc.

    Hello, I really would like to write an app or apps for iPhone / iPad. I've never done this so far because most of my work has been in windows environment. I recently got an i7 with windows 7 and love it, and this is what I am using to do development on currently. I would love to try out writing a simple App on a mac for either an iPhone or iPad. The question I had was are there any developers using a macbook to do windows based programming as well as writing apps? And what is their setups like? (example: using bootcamp) Most importantly, is it recommended based on the experience they had doing so? any problems / performance issue?     Hi, I am a web developer using C#. I would like to experiment with Windows shell programming in C#. Many people suggests that using managed applications for shell program, is dangerous. (Creation of separate instances for each process versus in process shell. Also version dependency) Frankly speaking, I am totally new to shell. Is there a book available, that will treat these topics; both through managed code and unmanaged code (but mostly towards managed code)?     I read this question a few weeks ago. I thought about it when I first saw the iPad. Do you think it would be possible to set up a development environment on the iPad? I think it would be awesome if there was an InstantRails App, a Django App, maybe even 280 North's Atlas could run on it :). Would you develop using an on-screen keyboard and a 10 inch screen?   • navigation between screens Iphone programming

    Hi, I don't know if my question will be clear or not, but i'm starting basic stuff with iphone programming, and i'm trying to understand how to go from a screen to another. lets say i have a screen with a "next page" button and another page with a "return" button. I have a general idea of how to do this, but I don't know how to put it together. I think I need an IBAction method for each button, and in each method a navigation controller with pushViewController. So far, i've tried the following code, but even if it compiles properly and runs when i push the button, there is no change of screen... -(IBAction) toNext(id)sender{ NSLog(@"before code"); NextViewController *nvc = [[NextViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"NextView" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:nvc animated:YES]; [nvc release]; NSLog(@"after code"); } If someone had a nice tuto for me, it could be of some help... thx

  • C socket programming: recv / select not seeing sent messages

    Hey guys, I had some questions, about socket programming for client-server using TCP/IP. I am using select() to recv(), which works fine when client send() messages to server, but not the other way around. The send() returns positive (and reasonable) numbers of bytes sent by server but I know that the nubmer of bytes "sent" really means "sent out of the socket", not "sent and was received by the client." The select() function seems to work fine. So given that, my guess is that it's the send() function that is giving me the problem. Probably the address of client in send() is not correct. But when I compared address.sin_addr.s_addrmember (it's an unsigned long int) of struct sockaddr_in from recv() and send() of server, they are identical. So I am kind of lost as to what could be wrong?

    There are lots of programming and architecture patterns. Patterns allow to make code cleaner, reusable, more testable & at last (but not at least) to feel the follower a real cool developer. How do you rank these considerations for you? What does affect you most when you decide to apply pattern? I wonder how many times code reusability (especially for MVP, MVC patterns) was important? For example DAL library often shared between projects (it's reusable) but how often controllers/views (abstracted via interfaces) are reused?

  • Teaching a kid to type in order to start programming

    My 5 year old wants to start programming, but he doesn't yet know how to type without looking for each letter 1 at a time. I know it's going to frustrate him to go so slow because of his typing speed. And it's not going to be fun looking for all the letters constantly... So what's the best way to get him to type fast? Clearly he'll need to type a lot of punctuation like semicolons, colons and symbols. So his little hands will have to get used to spreading over the keyboard... I did some google searches and found some very poor looking apps that focused on the letters.

  • Python programming. Accessing Windows rigth click menu options

    I'm hoping to automate a few tasks at work. One of them being combining and converting power point files to PDFs. I'm a bit of a newbie (I just finished Magus Heitland's Beginning Python), so I'm not entirely sure what I'm specifically asking. On windows, one can select multiple files, right click, and select combine as adobe PDF. I've figured out the 'grouping' of the files I want to convert (I traverse the dir and nest the files inside of a list based on their names), but I'm unsure how to pursue the next step (the rightclick/combine command). Googling has led me to things like win32api, pywinauto, and ctypes. But as I read over what they do my newbieness prevents me from knowing which is the tool I need. Could any one suggest a few good resources or tips?

    i was learning socket programming in unix using c/c++. I am confused with one function call bind(params..). Actually it takes the adreess structure "sockaddr_in" and we can create the structure in the following way sockaddr_in.*** = somthing.. sockaddr_in..s_addr htonl(INADDR_ANY) **Passing INADDR_ANY will alow to bind all local addresses** My question is , why do we need to use "INADDR_ANY" ? In my knowledge every machine can has only one unique IP Address. In this way there is only one address associated with the machien. Thye bind call should directly bind the socket to the single available address. Please explain what are the different scenarios and why is it so?

I have been doing work in JOOMLA, MAGENTO, WP, Custom PHP, Opencart, laravel, codeignitor. Sometimes i need to design logic for a huge database application, in the applications we need nesting loops and queries, although i follow OOPS standards, ORM etc, still i feel i need more robust coding designs. I need to know how can i improve these things, so that code remain neat, efficient and faster. Also how big webapps like facebook twitter tests there code speed? How high level programmers choose design patterns. If you can help me find something useful with examples?

    hey folks, I try to realize a little game project to dive deeper into OO programming (winforms c++/cli). I already started coding but now I´d like to make a re-design. For the beginning the game should consist of four parts like game-engine, user interface, highscore and playground.   • What color scheme do you use for programming?

    I get a lot of attention at work because I am the only one who bothered to change the default color settings in Visual Studio. I just modified them myself. I can provide the settings file if anyone cares to import it. Here's an example of how it looks. It reminds me of DOS/BASIC programming before I actually knew how to program. I also find it to be very readable. What color schemes do you use?! EDIT: To clarify, I only edited the text settings. The windows and panels of VS2005 are still the windows default.

  • event vs thread programming on server side.

    We are planning to start a fairly complex web-portal which is expected to attract good local traffic and I've been told by my boss to consider/analyse node.js for the serve side. I think scalability and multi-core support can be handled with an Nginx or Cherokee up in the front. 1) Is this node.js ready for some serious/big business? 2) Does this 'event/asynchronous' paradigm on server side has the potential to support the heavy traffic and data operation ? considering the fact that 'everything' is being processed in a single thread and all the live connections would be lost if it got crashed (though its easy to restart). 3) What are the advantages of event based programming compared to thread based style ? or vice-versa. (I know of higher cost associated with thread switching but hardware can be squeezed with event model.)     HI All I need to write a scientific application in C++ doing a lot of computations and using a lot of memory. I have part of the job but due to high requirements in terms of resources I was thinking to start moving to OpenMPI. Before doing that I have a simple curiosity: If I understood the principle of OpenMPI is the developer that has the task of splitting the jobs over different nodes calling SEND and RECEIVE based on node available at that time. Do you know if it does exist some library or OS or whatever that has this capability letting my code reamain as it is now? Basically something that connects all computers and let share as one their memory and CPU? I am a bit confused because of the high material available on the topic. Should I look at cloud computing? or Distributed Shared Memory? Can you help me or address me a bit? Thanks

    I have a company that would like to bring me in to serve me an hour long exam. No resources other than a pencil and paper. I really couldn't get any sort of feedback on the type of exam (implementation or generic) beside that it would test a few specific areas. Have you done anything like this? What sort of questions did they ask? What's a good way to prepare? I'll probably go in a couple weeks before school starts back up. A time sensitive exam structure is a weak point for me, so what should I absolutely focus down on? If they like the exam, that's when I'll get a face-to-face meeting.   • Excel - Programming Cells

    I just started programming in Excel and I have a problem figuring some code out. I have created a work schedule in Excel with lists in order to add new people. I wanted to create a macro in which the user inputs a value in a cell (I chose B3) and depending on that 'start time' in cell B3, the headers for the lists all change to correspond with that starting time. For example: B3 says 5:00 am. All the headers will follow with: 5:00 am, 6:00 am, 7:00 am, etc. of course the headers will move at some point so I'm wondering how do you point to a cell that moves too?

  • Reading programming tutorials while at work

    I work in a call centre and have been told by my manager that when there are no calls coming through they're happy for me to read stuff on the internet. There is a net filter in place but I can access SO from work which is always handy. I'm searching for articles that will make me a generally better programmer. I code in Python but combine it with Postgres and JS quite a lot if that helps. I'm currently reading Dive into python3 but I fear it won't last me much longer and would really like to expand my programming ability.
