• Dedicated GRUB2 Partition and Windows 8

  Ok so as many of you may know the Windows 8 developer preview was released today and as such I'm very eager to use it but I have both Ubuntu and Windows 7 installed on my machine. I don't want to disturb these drives and have recently set up a dedicated grub partition on /media/sdb8 My question is if I install windows 8 will it overwrite the grub partition and if so what are the steps I should take to recover it.

  I am starting a new job in a company with many developers and media people, the layout of the place is open with computers around a skinny oval, I have worked in small teams and programming embedded C, the jobis for objective C I'm still in a medium stage, so I know what I don't know (haha), that means I have to google it and then implement it, So the question is how bad does it look if the guy next to you does lot of searching for coding I mean, at the end of the day I will get the job done, but want to look professional too!

• IPS Package Groups

  IPS group packages consist solely of dependencies on other packages that make up a logical grouping of software. These are similar to, but not the equivalent of, Solaris 10 metaclusters. The main difference is that metaclusters are nested subsets ranging from a minimal install to nearly all packages on the media. Group packages have no such hierarchy. They can overlap other groups, or be completely disjoint sets. A group dependency is set this way in an IPS package manifest file: depend fmri=full/pkg/name type=group Current Solaris Groups Solaris currently has 4 system groups defined. These are used for different types of installation, and are included in the xml manifest files used by the various Solaris installers: Package Name Summary Description Default Installation For:  group/system/solaris-desktop Oracle Solaris Desktop Provides an Oracle Solaris desktop environment Live Media  group/system/solaris-large-server Oracle Solaris Large Server Provides an Oracle Solaris large server environment Text Installer  group/system/solaris-small-server Oracle Solaris Small Server Provides a useful command-line Oracle Solaris environment  Zones  group/system/solaris-auto-install  Oracle Solaris Automated Installer Client  Provides an Oracle Solaris Automated Installer client  Automated Installer There are also several "feature" groups such as AMP and GNU Developer Tools.   I have a simple day and night cycle by at day disabling OpenGL lighting and at night enabling openGL Lighting. When I enable everything appears darker. • Sound through HDMI with the NVIDIA drivers

  I am running a media center setup with the display through HDMI, powered by a NVIDIA card. I am using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers availabler through the additional drivers utility, on Xubuntu 11.10. In the mixer, I have all the volumes unmuted and turned up to 100%, but no sound through the HDMI. If I plug in speakers the nd comes through just fine. What can I do to make the sound go through the HDMI and to the TV?

• mounted smb share throu fstab, gets read only on added files

  I mounted my nas in ubuntu 12.10 and it works with read/write, but when I'm adding a file or directory that file gets read only permissions. My fstab mount looks like this: //192.168.0.12/share/ /media/nas cifs credentials=/home/jocke/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 If I mount the smb share manualy through the GUI it works, but not through fstab. What I am doing wrong?

My set up is like this: Drive 1: 80 GB SSD Windows 7 Drive 2: 320 GB HDD Ubuntu (installed through Wubi) Drive 3: 1000 TB NTFS media drive What I want to do is move the Ubuntu installation from the 320 gig hard drive to my SSD and totally get rid of Windows. Mirror 1 has a monthly bandwidth cap so upon reaching it I want to automatically toggle to mirror 2. • Interaction of a GUI-based App and Windows Service

  I am working on personal project that will be designed to help manage my media library, specifically recordings created by Windows Media Center. So I am going to have the following parts to this application: A Windows Service that monitors the recording folder. Once a new recording is completed that meets specific criteria, it will call several 3rd party CLI Applications to remove the commercials and re-encode the video into a more hard-drive friendly format. A controller GUI to be able to modify settings of the service, specifically add new shows to watch for, and to modify parameters for the CLI Applications A standalone (GUI-based) desktop application that can perform many of the same functions as the windows service, expect manually on specific files instead of automatically based on specific criteria. (It should be mentioned that I have limited experience with an application of this complexity, and I have absolutely zero experience with Windows Services) Since the 1st and 3rd bullet share similar functionality, my design plan is to pull the common functionality into a separate library shared by both parts applications, but these 2 components do not need to interact otherwise. The 2nd and 3rd bullets seem to share some common functionality, both will have a GUI, both will have to help define similar parameters (one to send to the service and the other to send directly to the CLI applications), so I can see some advantage to combining them into the same application. On the other hand, the standalone application (bullet #3) really does not need to interact with the service at all, except for possibly sharing a few common default parameters that can easily be put into an XML in a common location, so it seems to make more sense to just keep everything separate. The controller GUI (2nd bullet) is where I am stuck at the moment. Do I just roll this functionality (allow for user interaction with the service to update settings and criteria) into the standalone application? Or would it be a better design decision to keep them separate? Specifically, I'm worried about adding the complexity of communicating with the Windows Service to the standalone application when it doesn't need it. Is WCF the right approach to allow the controller GUI to interact with the Windows Service? Or is there a better alternative? At the moment, I don't envision a need for a significant amount of interaction, maybe just adding a new task once in a while and occasionally tweaking a parameter, but when something is changed, I do expect the windows service to immediately use the new settings.

  i just upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.10 and i noticed that i get this message The location is not a folder whenever i try to access a mounted media (USB or even my other partitions). I am now unable to view content on my usb pendrive or other partitions. already tried sudo apt-get remove exo-utils with no luck because it says it is not installed. Can anyone help me? • Why doesn't Ubuntu detect my second hard drive?

  I am new to Linux and to Ubuntu, I was wondering, I have two hard drives setup in SATA ports (non-raid, at least I don't think they are). I installed ubuntu unto the drives fresh without any previous versions or windows at all. However when I got the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS working, all I see is 1 x 120 gigabyte harddrive. Also, not sure if this is important or not, my hard drives are SSD.
