• Do all Mac OS X applications require Admin permissions to 'install'?

  I'm new to the whole Mac OS X operating system. I'm trying to learn and I've got myself a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.7.3. I've created a test user that can not administrate so that I can test out permissions and I've found that I can not do anything in the Applications folder, which includes 'installing' applications (even those drag 'n' drop ones) and creating folders, without entering an Admin name and password. However, I was under the impression that this wasn't the case and you only needed Admin permissions to write to somewhere like Preferences, so can somebody please clarify why it is asking for Admin when I try to drag 'n' drop applications into the Applications folder.

• Migrating Windows XP BOOT.INI Settings to Windows 7 Boot-loader

  Two months ago my motherboard died, so I bought a used computer that came with Windows 7. I have since installed my old hard-drive, which had Windows XP on it, in this system. What I am trying to do now is to figure out a way to migrate the settings from XP's BOOT.INI into 7's boot-loader. Below is the BOOT.INI I used in XP (I have reduced the strings and updated the disks to point to the new location of the old HD. Oh and I am not clear on the drive letters. In XP, I could boot the recovery console or MS-DOS from a file in C:\ that contains the boot-sector. I am not sure what drive letter it would be called now—I had to manually change all the drive letters of the old partitions in Windows 7 because it auto-assigned them all wrong/differently). • MacBook Pro battery capacity 65K mAh

  I have a 15" MacBook Pro 3.1 (that is Late 2007 model AFAIR). I've bought it new a couple of years ago. Recently its on-battery power lifespan became very short (30 to 10 minutes). When my notebook turns itself off due to "low battery" and I press the small button on the battery itself, all LED lights are alight, indicating full charge. When I plug in the power adapter, my Mac displays that "battery is fully charged, finishing charging process" (I have a Russian OS X 10.5.7, so that is a rough translation), but the LEDs on battery itself display (seemingly accurate) status that there are one or two "LEDs still not charged". My battery have as few as 37 recharge cycles (yes, I've neglected calibration over the time I've used it). Battery info programs like iBatt2 report battery capacity of 65 337 mAh (with by-design capacity of 5600 mAh). I get it that something went wrong with battery electronics. I've tried resetting my Mac's PRAM and SMC, it did not changed anything. Now I'm trying to recalibrate the battery, but looks like it does not help as well. Will try to recalibrate it several times in a row. I'd buy a new battery if I knew if it is battery fault, not a notebook's. Any suggestions? Update: After recalibration, my battery status now displays battery capacity of 1500 mAh. But with every recalibration (or simply when I use notebook without power adapter plugged in) this number changes in the range from 200 mAh to 1700 mAh. LEDs on battery now are synchronous with what nodebook thinks on the charge level. Also I've noticed that cycle count changes rather slowly. It is now 39, it was 37 when I've started recalibration, and I went through the process at least ten times... So, the main question is: does it look like that replacing the battery would help me (or does it look like this is notebook's problem)? I guess I should try replacing the battery.

  Every time I create new drawing document in Microsoft Visio 2007, drawing options "Snap" and "Glue" are turned on by default. I find both of them particularly annoying, so every time I create a new drawing I open "main menu - Tools - Snap & Glue" and turn these options off for that particular document. Is there an option or setting to turn "Snap" and "Glue" off permanently for all new Microsoft Visio 2007 drawing documents? Update: Maybe there's some way to bithack executable file (EXE or DLL) in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12?

• Why is Excel 2010/2013 taking 10 seconds open any file?

  I have a fast Windows 7 PC with two SSDs and 16GB of RAM, so I'm used to programs loading very fast. But recently, for no reason I can figure out, Excel has started taking way too long to open Excel files (of any size--even blank files). This is occurring with Excel 2010 and with Excel 2013 after I upgraded, hoping to solve the problem. Here a couple scenarios: If I start Excel directly, it opens almost instantly. No problem there. If I start Excel directly, and then open any Excel file (.xls or .xlsx), it loads almost instantly. Still no problem BUT if I attempt to open any Excel file directly, with Excel not running, it consistently takes 10-11 seconds for Excel to start. I get no error messages, just a spinning cursor for 10-11 seconds, and then the file opens. During the delay while Excel is trying to start, I'm not really seeing any discernible spike in CPU or memory usage, other than explorer.exe. This problem is only occurring with Excel, not Word or any other program I'm aware of. I've searched around quite a bit on this question and found various others who have experienced it, but the solutions that worked for them are not working for me. For a few people it was a problem with scanning network drives, but my problem is purely with local files; I have no network drives, and the problem persists even with all network connections disabled. Some people suggested worksheets with corrupted formulas or links, but I'm experiencing this with ANY Excel file: even blank worksheets. Others thought it was a problem with add-ins, but I have all Excel add-ins disabled (as far as I can tell). One person solved it by disabling a "clipboard manager" process that was running in the background, but I don't have that. I've disabled as many startup and background processes as I can, but the problem persists. I've run malware scans, disk cleanup, CCleaner, and installed Excel 2013. I've deleted temporary files, enabled SuperFetch, and edited registry keys. Still can't get rid of the problem. Any ideas? My system details: Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit, Excel 2013 32-bit, 16GB RAM, all programs installed on SSD.

  To use deluge I use a socks proxy server. Everything was working perfectly till now. I use the following code to create the socks server: ssh -D 1080 user@remote-server In the proxy settings of Deluge I put the host as 127.0.0.1 and port as 1080 and use socks v4 (for some reason it didn't work with socks v5). This setup was working perfectly till now. Now suddenly I cannot download any torrents. The error I get is connection timed out. I checked the remote server and it seems it is not even being used. What's the safest way to deal with this?   I am using Webmin and I can't get the file manager to load in Firefox. It is a simple, Java based file manager. When I try to load it I get the following error: This module requires java to function, but your browser does not support java Internet Explorer works fine and I have yet to try on Chrome. Java is installed and I have the same problem on Windows and Linux. Java seems to work fine with everything else, with the exception of webcams. Any advice on the issue would be appreciated. I'm planning on buying one for a build but don't know if I can cheap out on getting a Bluray 2x drive or spend more money for a quality Bluray 8x drive.   My problem is that I want to assign a keyboardshortcut for Dreamweaver CS4 and I have it like this: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS4\Dreamweaver.exe" Thats ok so far. But when I press the key it doesn't place itself infront of everything else like Outlook and Visual Studio does for example, instead it blinks in the taskbar, and I have to click there anyway to get back to Dreamweaver. Is there any switch or something I can assign for Dreamweaver to get back AND have it "popup?"

• rr.com appended to URL and I don't know why

  I've been having some pretty bad and intermittent internet connectivity issues. I keep getting timeouts on my browsers, or what appears to be timeouts on my browsers. In Chrome it's generally error 21. FF it times out. And so on. While this is happening, I can go into the command line and ping or traceroute the same domain and it works fine. I use my cellphone on the same network and it's fine connecting to the same domain. And when it fails, it's all domains that are down in all browsers, chrome, FF, etc. I also noticed that when I try to connect to 192.168.1.1 it says in chrome did you mean www.192.168.1.1rr.com but when I enter https://192.168.1.1 it's fine. It only seems to do this in Chrome. This is making me think I have a virus. I did some researching about something called road runner, but I can't find any related traces. I also ran a full virus scan using nod32 (eset) and nothing. Any suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated. The intermittent loss of total internet access is really annoying and I'm worried about why it's trying to append the rr.com domain in Chrome. I suspect I'm dealing with two different issues, but you never know. Also for the DNS I'm using Google's DNS servers, the famous 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4

• Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

  Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. • Windows 7 detects my 1 TB disk as a disk with only 31 MB space

  I've added another 1 TB Western Digital disk on my computer (there is a disk with 250 GB already), and after booting to Windows 7, it recognise the disk, but in the Disk Management panel, it says the disk has only 31 MB TOTAL space, so is what it shows in the EVEREST information. And when I rebooted the computer and entered BIOS, it said the new disk has 0 MB disk capacity. Is there any way to fix this problem?

  OK, I have been doing nothing different than I have been since I have gotten Windows 7. Now all of the sudden Windows Defender is turned OFF and I cant turn it back on. It tells me that it is blocked by group policy.
