• Asus F5N laptop built-in card reader driver problem

  I have an Asus F5N X50N-AP011C. I have manually installed Windows 7 x64 on it, replacing the original Windows Vista. It also automatically installed a card reader driver, but it can no longer read xD cards. The driver shows in the device manager as "Generic- xD/SDMMC/MS/Pro USB device" (under "drives" - and a drive is also shown in Windows Explorer). The same card reader once used to work with xD cards. I also tried to manually install drivers from this website: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/realtek.htm - the RTS 5158 but it didn't work (it shows as USB device in device manager, but not as a drive in Windows Explorer). Does anyone know what card reader my model has built-in? (I think it's the 5158 but I don't know how to verify that - there's also no hint in the System Information tool, only the driver name is listed under "drives") how it is connected internally? if there is a better Windows 7 x64 driver?

• Portable VirtualBox with Ubuntu on two machines

  I have VirtualBox Portable installed from vbox.me. I moved it on a USB drive and added a virtual Ubuntu. It works fine on the computer I created it, but moving the usb drive to a different the Ubuntu does not start any more. I already changed location descriptions in <machine>.vbox and the VirtualBox.xml. When pressing Shift while starting the GRUB loader comes up, so I tried the recovery mode. Same here – startup freezes and nothing happens. Any hints for me? • how to recover data from my disk - I accidentally copied with dd an iso on it

  I wanted to create a bootable usb from an iso image and i accidentally put as the output of the dd, instead of my usb drive, one of my hard disks. The iso was 3,3 GB and my disk is 1TB! And it was almost full. Can i at least restore the data that has not been overwritten? Right now i can't even mount it. • New Kingson SSD drive fails after 1 week

  I upgraded the hard disk in my notebook to a 128GB Kingston SSD V100. Everything worked fine for about a week then out of the blue the notebook would not boot up any more. A black dos-like screen was shown with the options to try and boot normally or attempt to repair windows. Neither option would do anything. When I removed the drive and tested it in an external usb case no other computers are able to access the drive either. Is there anything I can try to fix it myself? The drive is partitioned into three drives and when it's connected through an external usb case to another computer I can see the partitions, just can't access anything on them. Does this mean the drive might be recoverable?

  I have a computer witch cannot be boot from CD or USB. I have Debian and Windows XP with dual boot via GRUB. Now I want to uninstall Debian and GRUB and restore the Windows MBR. I can enter boot Debian and Windows OSes, but no boot from CD or USB for recovery. How can I remove GRUb and restore MBR from within Windows XP or Debian? NOTE: I asked this question before, but after accepting the answer, I found that Windows XP does not have fdisk command. However, I think it is too late to continue the discussion there; thus, I asked this brand new question.

• How can I retrieve "remembered"(stored) wi-fi password from a win. 7 device?

  I have access to PC, and I am a standard user. Everything(incl. "show charecters" tickbox at wiriless menu) requires admin access. Now, that said machine is actually like a big tv with touch. Type-stuff is handled by virtual keyboard of windows. I can reach to c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles\Interfaces and can see-open files there, which is I assume where passwords stored are. Now the problem is that these passwords is encypted. I'm ok with if there is a way with changing/resetting admin password as well. Considering this device has nothing but massive amounts of usb(yep, not even cd-dvd // rw) the only way is from inside or with usb without admin rights.

• Best way to syn a file between 2 or more drives?

  I have a special file that I edit daily, it is somewhat like a large text file but a little more to it then that. I have a copy on my main desktop and a copy of the file on a USB drive as well. I would like a way to open up either file (from the USB drive or from my desktop drive) and be able to edit and save the file and have it stay updated on both drives. What is a lightweight and easy method of doing this? I do not need anything fancy

• Wired PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse do not work in 12.04 Live CD or after fresh 12.04 install - Foxconn D270S Atom Motherboard

  My Wired PS/2 keyboard and mouse do not work in 12.04, either in a fresh install or from the Live CD. A USB keyboard and mouse will work. The PS/2 keyboard and mouse will work using the same hardware and a fresh 10.04 Ubuntu install or a fresh Windows 7 install. The motherboard is a Foxconn D270S Atom based motherboard. This problem is specific to this motherboard and Ubuntu 12.04. So far I've tried running in the fresh 12.04 install: sudo apt-get install sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get dist-upgrade After the apt-get upgraded the first time, I now get to the point where there are 0 items to be upgraded. Rebooted and still no PS/2 keyboard/mouse. I've also tried adding the following lines to GRUB at boot time (the PS/2 keyboard works in GRUB) acpi=noirq acpi=off Neither setting made any difference. The motherboard is a Foxconn D270S Atom based motherboard. Even more interestingly, 12.04 recognizes the same PS/2 keyboard and mouse on a separate Gigabyte AM3+ based motherboard. I only have this problem on this particular motherboard with Ubuntu 12.04. Any help would be appreciated. I bought this low-power motherboard specifically for the task of running Ubuntu 12.04 for the next five years... Update... I dug out an old PS/2 mouse that does not use a PS/2 to USB adapter but is directly wired for PS/2. Still no PS/2 keyboard or mouse after reboot. Again, I only have this problem with this motherboard and 12.04 Ubuntu. Other motherboards work fine with 12.04 and this motherboard works fine with 10.04. Update 2... I installed the 12.04 Server version. The text-based installer recognized the keyboard without issue, but after the first boot into the installed OS, the PS/2 keyboard would no longer respond. I tried installing Gnome on the Server install and the PS/2 mouse and keyboard don't work in Gnome either. I Opened bug #995570 for this issue

• Ubuntu 12.04.1 Radeon 9550 stuck with 640x480, works in Geexbox

  I am a complete new user trying to set up Ubuntu on an old desktop. It has an AGP Radeon 9550 graphics card. I am running Ubuntu from a USB drive with persistence as the PC currently has no hard drive I seem to be stuck in 640*480 mode. The desktop itself is larger, but the monitor display is stuck on 640*480. In SettingsDisplays, only the 640*480 option is available. What I have found out so far: The proprietary ati drivers no longer support my card. If 3D isn't an issue (it's not) the open source driver should be fine. This should be installed by default so in theory I am using it already xserver-xconf/pci/*.ids doesn't show any entries for the card's PCI id. hardware additional drivers show no proprietary drivers I tried the booting into the current version of Geexbox from a USB stick and this set the resolution correctly by default so I know it can be done, but I know no idea how. How can I tell what driver the card is using, and how can I get the higher resolutions back?

• Simple scan not working after upgrading to 12.10 (Xubuntu)

  Since upgrading to 12.10 (Xubuntu), Simple Scan is not working anymore. I got scanning working with Xsane, but only if Simple Scan has not run before. Otherwise I have to restart the printer/scanner (HP OfficeJet J5783). • HP ProBook 4720s UEFI boot only manually into 12.04

  I'm trying to get UEFI boot on my ProBook 4720s. Because I swapped the HDD for a SSD I had a blank canvas to start. The 12.04 Live DVD refuses to boot into UEFI, as do Alternate and desktop CD's. However, when I make a 16Gb flashdrive into a live FS using the bootdisk tool in ubuntu, I can boot from USB, manually into UEFI mode. It even sidesteps to DVD as medium when I boot from USB with 12.04 Live DVD present. I installed a GPT partitiontable with part 1, label EFI, fs FAT32, flag BOOT, mounts at /boot/efi part 2, label Linux-ROOT, fs ext4, no flags, mounts at / part 3, label Linux-SWAP, fs swap, no flags, mounts as swap So far, My system refuses to boot from harddrive by itself. I have to select "Boot from EFI file" and manually browse to (HD0,GPT1)\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi any other option ends in "no system disk, please insert boot disk" I tried installing BURG, but that merely enforces non-efi boot. I tried most of the solutions I could find, but one says \EFI\grub\grub.cfg next says \EFI\ubuntu\ubuntu,cfg I'm confused and getting frustrated. How do I correctly install Ubuntu 12.04 in UEFI mode on this machine???

• Booting Ubuntu Failure : error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'

  I have installed ubuntu 12.10 in a WD external harddrive (320GB). This is a complete installation, not live USB. When I plug it in my HP desktop I go to the BIOS settings and boot off the harddrive, everything work perfectly -as it should. Now this works on everysingle computer and laptop in my house (all HP) -except for ONE. My HP ProBook 4530s. When I select to boot of the USB I get the Message: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0' Now, I have removed the hdd from my laptop and the external drive is the ONLY drive plugged in. Bellow is a picture of the screen. After the message I navigate to ls / (as shown below): After here I try to acces other folders under ls /, for example, I try to go to ls /boot to get to the grub folder. Then I get the same message as before: as shown by the image below: The only folders I can access without getting the message again are /home, /run and /usr. So how do I: Boot Ubuntu from GRUB2 (this screen) manually Set to automatically boot Ubuntu If possible an explanation for this problem Thanks!

The systems that I have had experience with have typically been small to medium size codebases - typically close to 25-30K LOC in C, using 8-16 and 32 bit low end microcontrollers. The systems have been entirely bootstrapped by our team - meaning right from the start-up code to the end application code has either been written by the team, or at the very least, is thoroughly understood and maintained by us. Now, if we were to start developing more complex systems with complex peripherals, such as USB OTG et al. (think, low end cell phones), there are libraries and stacks available commercially and from chip vendors that reduce the task to just calling the right APIs and being able to use those peripherals. Now, from a habit point of view, this does not give me and the team a comfortable feeling, not being able to comprehend the entire code tree, with virtual black boxes at the lower layers. Is it reasonable to devote, and reserve, time getting into the details of how the APIs are implemented, assuming that the same would also entail getting into details of relevant standards (again, for USB as an example)? Or, alternatively, should a thorough understanding of the top level usage of the APIs be sufficient? This of course assumes that the source codes to all libraries are available, which they are, in almost all cases. Edit: In partial response to @Abhi Beckert, the documentation is refreshingly very comprehensive and meticulously maintained, AFAIK and been able to judge. I have not had a long experience with the same.

• Create Windows Bootloader/Boot into Windows from Ubuntu

  I have computer that dual-boots (or tri-boots) Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows 7, and Ubuntu 12.04. Grub boots between Windows 8 and Ubuntu; for which I use primarily. Recently, I have decided I wanted to remove Ubuntu, as I hardly used it. As a stupid mistake, I deleted the Ubuntu partition before changing the bootloader to replace Grub. Whenever I know boot the machine, it gives me the "grub-rescue" prompt -- I am unable to boot into either Windows (8 nor 7), nor Ubuntu (except via USB, of course). I do not have any Windows 7/8 recovery media, so that isn't an option. Please note that after I deleted the Ubuntu partition, I put the PC into hibernate, and then turned it on. This means the C:\ [Windows 8] drive cannot be mounted. I don't know if that is bad, but it definitely doesn't make things better. I am currently booting Ubuntu via USB, in an effort to restore the Windows bootloader solutions. I have looked into using boot-repair to solve the problem using the instructions here, although after attempting to apply the changes, it gave the error: "Please install the [mbr] packages. Then try again." I don't know why I'm getting this error; is there a way to install the 'mbr packages?' I honestly don't know what exactly they are, nor how to install them. Is there any options I have not yet exhausted to be able to boot back into Windows, in the case that there is a better way? In the end, I want to set the bootloader to boot into Windows 8, but booting into either Windows 7 or 8 is fine -- I can use EasyBCD from there. Is there a simple solution to this? I've checked BIOS, and I haven't been able to find a way to boot into Windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Nothing happens when I connect my Iphone 3G to my laptop

  Hi, how do i connect my iphone to my laptop (ubuntu 10.04) so that i can sync music and be able to look at it as a usb stick? (this is what I want to do but there is a problem.) When i connect it to my laptop nothing happens, it doesn't show up as an ikon or as a mass storage device. My Iphone runs 4.2.1 it's an Iphone 3G and it's not jailbroken for the moment, is that a problem? My laptop is an Asus 1201n ubuntu 10.04 (64-bits) Bus 002 Device 005: ID 05ac:1292 Apple, Inc. iPhone 3G I connected my Ipod Video (30 gb) and that one doesn't appear as well So I'm kind of stuck now. The problem probably lies in the system, because the usb port is working. The port is working fine, it's my computer it doesn't recognize that I have my Iphone plugged-in! and the phone is working (tested it on my mac). I have the latest versions of these programs: hipo, ipod, gtkpod, ifuse, libusmuxd1 and usbmxd. I try to mount my iphone with fuse but i got this error. • Boot-repair commands not found in PATH or not executable

  I recently had problems with my ubuntu partition (after the battery died), I managed to fix them by running ubuntu from usb and run gparted. It worked I can access my files on the partition by running ubuntu from usb. But when I restart the computer, after selecting ubuntu in Grub, I get a black screen with a white underscore. I googled the problem, and tried to solve it by setting nomodeset, but it didn't work. Next I wanted to try to fix Grub using boot-repair, I clicked on 'Recommended repair', it tells me to type the following commands in the terminal: sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" apt-get install -fy sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" dpkg --configure -a sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" apt-get purge -y --force-yes grub-common But when running the second command, I get this error: dpkg: warning: 'sh' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: warning: 'rm' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: warning: 'tar' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: error: 3 expected programs not found in PATH or not executable. Note: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin. I didn't edit /etc/environment (or any other files), this is what it looks like: PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games" RUNNING_UNDER_GDM="yes" I have no idea how to fix this. I'm running dualboot Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7, Windows boots fine.

  I have a computer of a friend of mine, that runs Ubuntu (I don't know what version, due to the current system status) and while he was updating the kernel, he reboot the computer (yes that could be happen !!, anyway) Currently I am trying to recover the system by using a live USB, with Ubuntu installed on it. What I am doing, is the following: Update Failure The problem is that when I try to execute the fifth step, I am getting error because I do not have Internet access. The computer is properly wired on my rooter, and I have Internet access in any place apart of the shell. This message for example is send it via the live USB. but I cannot access the Internet via the shell. In my shell I try to use this command: sudo dhclient eth0 but the result of this command is the following message sudo: unable to resolve host ubuntu My hosts file has the following content: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 ubuntu # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters ff02::3 ip6-allhosts how can I get connected on the Internet, in order to download the appropriate updates ? • Lexmark X5650 doesn't print (scanning works)

  I want to use a Lexmark X5650 under Ubuntu. When I connect it via USB, Ubuntu recognizes the device, but can't find a driver. On the Lexmark support site, you can select "Unix/Linux" and then "Ubuntu 9.04", "9.10", "10.04" and "10.10". However, all versions lead to the same driver: lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz (Last updated: 2012-04-13). While installing this driver, the installer asks me to connect the device. As soon as I connect it via USB, Ubuntu now adds the printer automatically. So after the installation completed, I had 2 printers set up. But I can't print anything (I tried it with both printer configurations). Scanning works fine, though. So I guess the driver installation and the device connection are successful. When I try to print something, the print job is listed in the printing queue, but nothing happens. After some time, I get an error message which starts a debug wizard, but in the end it reads something like "Sorry, couldn't find the reason". I had several different error messages (unfortunately, I didn't record them), one was approximately like "printer cannot communicate with computer". Another said that my color ink was low (which is true, but black is full). Another said there was an input/output error. I tried it with Ubuntu 11.10. Because I read that some people had success with 10.04., I installed it in QEMU and installed the driver there, too. Same problem, though. I'd like to upgrade to 12.04, if it should work there for any reason, but I read that for some people this printer stopped working in 12.04 :/ So, it would be best if the printer would work in 12.04. If that's not possible, I'd be fine with starting a QEMU virtual machine with any GNU/Linux distribution that works with my printer.

• Error: You need to load the kernel first in Grub

  I have Lubuntu 11.10 installed on /dev/sda3, and Xubuntu 11.10 on /dev/sda5. A while ago, while being on Lubuntu, I made a mistake somewhere in creating a Live USB: by mistake, I installed a Live USB bootloader into /dev/sda3. This didn't result in any problem at that time. Today, I updated the kernel. I had to restart Lubuntu. In Grub, Lubuntu suddenly didn't appear anymore, and I booted automatically in Xubuntu. I tried to run update-grub and tried to use grub-customizer to get Lubuntu back in Grub, but this didn't work. I ran os-prober, but it doesn't show me Lubuntu. Then, I tried to add a new entry to /etc/grub.d/ on /dev/sda5 called 12_lubuntu. It contained the following: #!/bin/sh -e echo "Lubuntu" cat << EOF menuentry "Lubuntu" { set root=(hd0,3) linux /boot/vmlinuz initrd /boot/initrd.img } EOF After doing that, I ran update-grub and with grub-customizer, I wrote the Grub-configuration to MBR, that is: /dev/sda. Suddenly, Lubuntu appeared in Grub. I tried to launch it, but when doing this, the following message appeared: Error: You need to load the kernel first How can I make Grub start Lubuntu again?

• kubuntu 12.10 will not boot on mac 2.93Ghz intel core 2 duo

  I feel like I've tried it all and nothing is changing. I've tried booting from a liveUSB, a liveDVD, and I've checked the mod5 everything matches up. I've even tried different distro's same result on all of them. Just for reference: linuxmint 13kde and Fedora 17. I've also tried changing my liveUSB building software just in case. I've tried unetbootin and Linux USB builder. Both have same results, my opinion is that it is a hardware issue since I'm having near the same result with all of these variables. So now what is actually happening? I can boot up to a screen. I say A screen because some of the ways that dvd's and usb's boot differs. Now on liveusb I'm reaching a black screen with white text. Says booting: done, then below says loading ramdrive: done, then below that it says preparing to boot kernel this may take a while and buckle in or something to that effect. Then nothing. That's it computer freezes. I've waited up to 8 hrs and still nothing. Ok for the liveDVD Everything goes according to instructions per pdf files on every distro, until linux starts. I can only run in compatibility mode. When any other option is tried the computer seems to freeze/stall/be a pain in my butt... Ok well that seems to wrap it up. Also if I'm not explaining something well, I'm sorry I can try to clear anything up. I'm not the best at descriptions. I'm leaving with a tech specs of my mac: 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics, bought in late 09" it's the 24" model, let me know if anymore information will help.   If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. • Ubuntu not shutting down ( going to black screen ) 12.04

  I am currently using a USB persistent install of ubuntu. its a simple 4GB drive with a 2.8GB partition ( casper-rw storage partition ). I setup an administrator account and set it to login automatically. I also removed ubiquity to simply use this as a go anywhere install. Heres my issue. Im logged in as my account, and I click the top right gear and select "shut down". Text pops up showing its quitting processes.. etc. and then goes to the plymouth animation. But... The screen goes black, and then it goes to the login screen. Now when im at the login screen i go into terminal ( alt+F2 ) and dont you know, im logged in as Ubuntu. so then I try the following: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo shutdown now It goes to the plymouth screen again as if its shutting down, AND the screen goes black once again but the computer has not turned off, as in the usb is still flashing the light, the fans are still on, the only thing off is the screen. Is this a bug? If not maybe i did something wrong? Perhaps its that I made an account but... if there is a work around for this please let me know. Thanks again, Fox
