  • Is it possible to shorten my main function in this code?

    - by AjiPorter
    Is it possible for me to shorten my main() by creating a class? If so, what part of my code would most likely be inside the class? Thanks again to those who'll answer. :) #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <string> #include <ctime> #include <cstdlib> #define SIZE 20 using namespace std; struct textFile { string word; struct textFile *next; }; textFile *head, *body, *tail, *temp; int main() { ifstream wordFile("WORDS.txt", ios::in); // file object constructor /* stores words in the file into an array */ string words[SIZE]; char pointer; int i; for(i = 0; i < SIZE; i++) { while(wordFile >> pointer) { if(!isalpha(pointer)) { pointer++; break; } words[i] = words[i] + pointer; } } /* stores the words in the array to a randomized linked list */ srand(time(NULL)); int index[SIZE] = {0}; // temporary array of index that will contain randomized indexes of array words int j = 0, ctr; // assigns indexes to array index while(j < SIZE) { i = rand() % SIZE; ctr = 0; for(int k = 0; k < SIZE; k++) { if(!i) break; else if(i == index[k]) { // checks if the random number has previously been stored as index ctr = 1; break; } } if(!ctr) { index[j] = i; // assigns the random number to the current index of array index j++; } } /* makes sure that there are no double zeros on the array */ ctr = 0; for(i = 0; i < SIZE; i++) { if(!index[i]) ctr++; } if(ctr > 1) { int temp[ctr-1]; for(j = 0; j < ctr-1; j++) { for(i = 0; i < SIZE; i++) { if(!index[i]) { int ctr2 = 0; for(int k = 0; k < ctr-1; k++) { if(i == temp[k]) ctr2 = 1; } if(!ctr2) temp[j] = i; } } } j = ctr - 1; while(j > 0) { i = rand() % SIZE; ctr = 0; for(int k = 0; k < SIZE; k++) { if(!i || i == index[k]) { ctr = 1; break; } } if(!ctr) { index[temp[j-1]] = i; j--; } } } head = tail = body = temp = NULL; for(j = 0; j < SIZE; j++) { body = (textFile*) malloc (sizeof(textFile)); body->word = words[index[j]]; if(head == NULL) { head = tail = body; } else { tail->next = body; tail = body; cout << tail->word << endl; } } temp = head; while(temp != NULL) { cout << temp->word << endl; temp = temp->next; } return 0; }

  • Autoincrementing hierarchical IDs on SQL Server

    - by Ville Koskinen
Consider this table on SQL Server wordID aliasID value =========================== 0 0 'cat' 1 0 'dog' 2 0 'argh' 2 1 'ugh' WordID is a id of a word which possibly has aliases. AliasID determines a specific alias to a word. So above 'argh' and 'ugh' are aliases to each other. I'd like to be able to insert new words which do not have any aliases in the table without having to query the table for a free wordID value first. Inserting value 'hey' without specifying a wordID or an aliasID, a row looking like this would be created: wordID aliasID value =========================== 3 0 'hey' Is this possible and how?

  • Should developers know how to use office suites?

    - by systempuntoout
How deep is your knowledge on Office suites? Personally i don't like them, i hate create and manage word documents, excel datasheets etc. etc. I'm not talking about opening a word document and write some text or calculate sum and division on excel; i'm talking about advanced features like revisions, vba macros and so on. I have a co-worker, actually he's a talented functional analyst, that don't know anything about programming but he's kind a monster guru on Microsoft Office suite. When he sits on my desk and asks me to open and modify some of his hardly complicated Microsoft Excel multicolor multipivotal recursive datasheet, ehm, i feel like a baby in front of a nuclear plant console. It' not a great feeling if you know what i mean. As programmer, do you feel guilty about not knowing office suites enough?

  • Opposite of nl2br? Is it str_replace?

    - by Julian H. Lam
So the function nl2br is handy. Except in my web app, I want to do the opposite, interpret line breaks as new lines, since they will be echoed into a pre-filled form. str_replace can take <br /> and replace it with whatever I want, but if I put in \n, it echoes literally a backslash and an n. It only works if I put a literal line break in the middle of my script, and break the indentation (so there are no trailing space). See: <?=str_replace('<br />',' ',$foo)?> Am I missing escape characters? I think I tried every combination...

  • prevent bots to query my database several times

    - by Alain
Hi all, I'm building an application that is a kind of registry. Think about the dictionary: you lookup for a word and it return something if the word is founded. Now, that registry is going to store valuable informations about companies, and some could be tempted to get the complete listing. My application use EJB 3.0 that replies to WS. So I was thinking about permits a maximum of 10 query per IP address per day. Storing the IP address and a counter on a table that would be empty by a script every night. Is it a good idea/practice to do so? If yes, how can I get the IP address on the EJB side? Is there a better way to prevent something to get all the data from my database? I've also though about CAPTCHA but I think it's a pain for the user, and sometime, they are difficult to read even for real human. Hope it's all clear since I'm not english... Thanks Alain

Like, if u send "Hello, How are you" I am receiving it word by word. I want that in a single stretch. How can i do ?? Also, is it possible to retrieve the port name from which the application is sending and receiving messages ?

  • C# Sequence Diagramm Reverse Engineering Tool?

    - by Wayne
It's essential for me to find a tool that will reverse engineer sequence diagrams by integrating with the debugger. I suppose using the profiler could work also but less desirable. It's a key requirement that the tool in question will record all threads of execution since the app, TickZoom, is heavily parallelized. We just evaluated a most awesome tool from Sparx called Enterprise Architect which integrates with the debugger. It allows you to set a break point, start recording method traces from that break point. It's a lovely design and GUI. Hope it works for you but it only records a single thread of execution so that makes it unusable for us. I will put in a feature request to Sparx. But hope to find a similar tool that does this now since that's the only features we need--not all the other stuff that Sparx also does rather well. Sincerely, Wayne

  • StringTokenizer problem of tokenizing

    - by Mr CooL
String a ="the STRING TOKENIZER CLASS ALLOWS an APPLICATION to BREAK a STRING into TOKENS.  "; StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer(a); while (st.hasMoreTokens()){ System.out.println(st.nextToken()); Given above codes, the output is following, the STRING TOKENIZER CLASS ALLOWS an APPLICATION to BREAK a STRING into TOKENS.  My only question is why the "STRING TOKENIZER CLASS" has been combined into one token???????? When I try to run this code, System.out.println("STRING TOKENIZER CLASS".contains(" ")); It printed funny result, FALSE It sound not logical right? I've no idea what went wrong. I found out the reason, the space was not recognized as valid space by Java somehow. But, I don't know how it turned up to be like that from the front processing up to the code that I've posted.

  • Creating a System::String object from a BSTR in Managed C++ - is this way a good idea???

    - by Eli
My co-worker is filling a System::String object with double-byte characters from an unmanaged library by the following method: RFC_PARAMETER aux; Object* target; RFC_UNICODE_TYPE_ELEMENT* elm; elm = &(m_coreObject->m_pStructMeta->m_typeElements[index]); aux.name = NULL; aux.nlen = 0; aux.type = elm->type; aux.leng = elm->c2_length; aux.addr = m_coreObject->m_rfcWa + elm->c2_offset; GlobalFunctions::CreateObjectForRFCField(target,aux,elm->decimals); GlobalFunctions::ReadRFCField(target,aux,elm->decimals); Where GlobalFunctions::CreateObjectForRFCField creates a System::String object filled with spaces (for padding) to what the unmanaged library states the max length should be: static void CreateObjectForRFCField(Object*& object, RFC_PARAMETER& par, unsigned dec) { switch (par.type) { case TYPC: object = new String(' ',par.leng / sizeof(_TCHAR)); break; // unimportant afterwards. } } And GlobalFunctions::ReadRFCField() copies the data from the library into the created String object and preserves the space padding: static void ReadRFCField(String* target, RFC_PARAMETER& par) { int lngt; _TCHAR* srce; switch (par.type) { case TYPC: case TYPDATE: case TYPTIME: case TYPNUM: lngt = par.leng / sizeof(_TCHAR); srce = (_TCHAR*)par.addr; break; case RFCTYPE_STRING: lngt = (*(_TCHAR**)par.addr != NULL) ? (int)_tcslen(*(_TCHAR**)par.addr) : 0; srce = *(_TCHAR**)par.addr; break; default: throw new DotNet_Incomp_RFCType2; } if (lngt > target->Length) lngt = target->Length; GCHandle gh = GCHandle::Alloc(target,GCHandleType::Pinned); wchar_t* buff = reinterpret_cast<wchar_t*>(gh.AddrOfPinnedObject().ToPointer()); _wcsnset(buff,' ',target->Length); _snwprintf(buff,lngt,_T2WFSP,srce); gh.Free(); } Now, on occasion, we see access violations getting thrown in the _snwprintf call. My question really is: Is it appropriate to create a string padded to a length (ideally to pre-allocate the internal buffer), and then to modify the String using GCHandle::Alloc and the mess above. And yes, I know that System::String objects are supposed to be immutable - I'm looking for a definitive "This is WRONG and here is why". Thanks, Eli.

  • Using perl to parse a file and insert specific values into a database

    - by Sean
Disclaimer: I'm a newbie at scripting in perl, this is partially a learning exercise (but still a project for work). Also, I have a much stronger grasp on shell scripting, so my examples will likely be formatted in that mindset (but I would like to create them in perl). Sorry in advance for my verbosity, I want to make sure I am at least marginally clear in getting my point across I have a text file (a reference guide) that is a Word document converted to text then swapped from Windows to UNIX format in Notepad++. The file is uniform in that each section of the file had the same fields/formatting/tables. What I have planned to do, in a basic way is grab each section, keyed by unique batch job names and place all of the values into a database (or maybe just an excel file) so all the fields can be searched/edited for each job much easier than in the word file and possibly create a web interface later on. So what I want to do is grab each section by doing something like: sed -n '/job_name_1_regex/,/job_name_2_regex/' file.txt --how would this be formatted within a perl script? (grab the section in total, then break it down further from there) To read the file in the script I have open FORMAT_FILE, 'test_format.txt'; and then use foreach $line (<FORMAT_FILE>) to parse the file line by line. --is there a better way? My next problem is that since I converted from a word doc with tables, which looks like: Table Heading 1 Table Heading 2 Heading 1/Value 1 Heading 2/Value 1 Heading 1/Value 2 Heading 2/Value 2 but the text file it looks like: Table Heading 1 Table Heading 2Heading 1/Value 1Heading 1/Value 2Heading 2/Value 1Heading 2/Value 2 So I want to have "Heading 1" and "Heading 2" as a columns name and then put the respective values there. I just am not sure how to get the values in relation to the heading from the text file. The values of Heading 1 will always be the line number of Heading 1 plus 2 (Heading 1, Heading 2, Values for heading 1). I know this can be done in awk/sed pretty easily, just not sure how to address it inside a perl script. After I have all the right values and such, linking it up to a database may be an issue as well, I haven't started looking at the way perl interacts with DBs yet. Sorry if this is a bit scatterbrained...it's still not fully formed in my head.

  • Building a Com addin for Office 2000 / Office 2007

    - by Stuart
I am struggling to find a straight forward guide to creating office addins using VSTO and VB.net. Specifically I would like to know how to be able to create a addin/ dll which can either be referenced from VBA in the form:- Addin.method(argument) or Addin.property = X Or which would install its own custom toolbars/ ribbon interface to an aspect of office for example Word. I've checked MSDN and in terms of legibility and usability of the explanations I have drawn a blank so far. I currently have a requirement to create at least one addin for Office 2000 to run and manipluate SQL and then a suite of addins for a customized Office 2007 (Word) set-up.

  • Dictionary with delegate or swith?

I can implement this logic with simple switch like this swith(some_val) { case 0: func0(); break; case 1: func1(); break; } or with delegates and dictinary like this delegate void some_delegate(); Dictinary some_dictinary = new Dictinary(); some_dictinary[0] = func0; some_dictinary[1] = func1; some_dictinary[some_value].Invoke(); Are this two metods equal and wich is prefered? • Flash CS4/AS3 Dynamic Text Box

    - by Jono
Hi, I have created a XML image gallery, which displays text in between each slide. Now I have created a movie clip with a dynamic text field (with Render HTML selected) to display the text from the XML which is pushed into an array. Now, this all works great BUT... /n or /r is not creating a new line break (as they need to be custom). Yet if I create an Array and manually push strings "Bla bla bla /n bla bla bla" I get a line break. I have tried converting the Array item to string (even though it already is), I would also avoid creating textField = new textField() any Ideas would be welcomed. Cheers

  • Highlighting effect to text and/or image similar to be synchronized with audio

    - by Irfan Mulic
I am looking how to approach following problem: We have application that displays text with audio recorded material. We use Browser Control (Internet Explorer) in Delphi App to do this. We respond to events in Delphi code setting innerHTML for elements if we have to update the style ... Now, request is to add option to dynamically move the cursor or dynamically highlight the words spoken from the paragraph. It doesn't need to match absolutely the exact word spoken so we will have to dynamically update the content of position of highlighted word based on some timer or something (because it is not text to speach). What should be the most practical and easy approach to this kind of problem, all answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Using android gesture on top of menu buttons

    - by chriacua
What I want is to have an options menu where the user can choose to navigate the menu between: 1) touching a button and then pressing down on the trackball to select it, and 2) drawing predefined gestures from Gestures Builder As it stands now, I have created my buttons with OnClickListener and the gestures with GestureOverlayView. Then I select starting a new Activity depending on whether the using pressed a button or executed a gesture. However, when I attempt to draw a gesture, it is not picked up. Only pressing the buttons is recognized. The following is my code: public class Menu extends Activity implements OnClickListener, OnGesturePerformedListener { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); //create TextToSpeech myTTS = new TextToSpeech(this, this); myTTS.setLanguage(Locale.US); //create Gestures mLibrary = GestureLibraries.fromRawResource(this, R.raw.gestures); if (!mLibrary.load()) { finish(); } // Set up click listeners for all the buttons. View playButton = findViewById(R.id.play_button); playButton.setOnClickListener(this); View instructionsButton = findViewById(R.id.instructions_button); instructionsButton.setOnClickListener(this); View modeButton = findViewById(R.id.mode_button); modeButton.setOnClickListener(this); View statsButton = findViewById(R.id.stats_button); statsButton.setOnClickListener(this); View exitButton = findViewById(R.id.exit_button); exitButton.setOnClickListener(this); GestureOverlayView gestures = (GestureOverlayView) findViewById(R.id.gestures); gestures.addOnGesturePerformedListener(this); } public void onGesturePerformed(GestureOverlayView overlay, Gesture gesture) { ArrayList<Prediction> predictions = mLibrary.recognize(gesture); // We want at least one prediction if (predictions.size() > 0) { Prediction prediction = predictions.get(0); // We want at least some confidence in the result if (prediction.score > 1.0) { // Show the gesture Toast.makeText(this, prediction.name, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); //User drew symbol for PLAY if (prediction.name.equals("Play")) { myTTS.shutdown(); //connect to game // User drew symbol for INSTRUCTIONS } else if (prediction.name.equals("Instructions")) { myTTS.shutdown(); startActivity(new Intent(this, Instructions.class)); // User drew symbol for MODE } else if (prediction.name.equals("Mode")){ myTTS.shutdown(); startActivity(new Intent(this, Mode.class)); // User drew symbol to QUIT } else { finish(); } } } } @Override public void onClick(View v) { switch (v.getId()){ case R.id.instructions_button: startActivity(new Intent(this, Instructions.class)); break; case R.id.mode_button: startActivity(new Intent(this, Mode.class)); break; case R.id.exit_button: finish(); break; } } Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • How divide a GWT module into some separate javascript files ?

    - by Ehsan Khodarahmi
Hi, I've a big GWT module which comprised of many java classes (& of course it's impossible to break it down into several modules). My GWT application consists of some forms, but the users usually work only with a few of them, anyway they should be abale to open any form as they need. Now my problem its that gwt generates a big js file that will load each time, but most of its content may never use! Is there any way to break the big js module file into several smaller files(for example, one file for each class) & gwt load them automatically as needed ?

  • Building dictionary of words from large text

    - by LiorH
I have a text file containing posts in English/Italian. I would like to read the posts into a data matrix so that each row represents a post and each column a word. The cells in the matrix are the counts of how many times each word appears in the post. The dictionary should consist of all the words in the whole file or a non exhaustive English/Italian dictionary. I know this is a common essential preprocessing step for NLP. Does anyone know of a tool\project that can perform this task? Someone mentioned apache lucene, do you know if lucene index can be serialized to a data-structure similar to my needs?

  • Efficiency of data structures in C99 (possibly affected by endianness)

    - by Ninefingers
Hi All, I have a couple of questions that are all inter-related. Basically, in the algorithm I am implementing a word w is defined as four bytes, so it can be contained whole in a uint32_t. However, during the operation of the algorithm I often need to access the various parts of the word. Now, I can do this in two ways: uint32_t w = 0x11223344; uint8_t a = (w & 0xff000000) >> 24; uint8_t b = (w & 0x00ff0000) >> 16; uint8_t b = (w & 0x0000ff00) >> 8; uint8_t d = (w & 0x000000ff); However, part of me thinks that isn't particularly efficient. I thought a better way would be to use union representation like so: typedef union { struct { uint8_t d; uint8_t c; uint8_t b; uint8_t a; }; uint32_t n; } word32; Using this method I can assign word32 w = 0x11223344; then I can access the various parts as I require (w.a=11 in little endian). However, at this stage I come up against endianness issues, namely, in big endian systems my struct is defined incorrectly so I need to re-order the word prior to it being passed in. This I can do without too much difficulty. My question is, then, is the first part (various bitwise ands and shifts) efficient compared to the implementation using a union? Is there any difference between the two generally? Which way should I go on a modern, x86_64 processor? Is endianness just a red herring here? I could inspect the assembly output of course, but my knowledge of compilers is not brilliant. I would have thought a union would be more efficient as it would essentially convert to memory offsets, like so: mov eax, [r9+8] Would a compiler realise that is what happening in the bit-shift case above? If it matters, I'm using C99, specifically my compiler is clang (llvm). Thanks in advance.

  • Properties of JavaScript objects

    - by clothears
In my JavaScript, I'm using an object as an associative array. It always has the property "main", and may have others. So, when I create it I might do this: var myobject = new Object (); myobject["main"] = somevalue; Other properties may be added later. Now, at some moment I need to know whether myobject has just the one property, or several, and take different actions depending (I'm only referring to properties I've created). So far all I've found to do is something like: flag = false; for (i in myobject) { if (i=="main") continue; flag = true; break; } and then branch on flag. Or: for (i in myobject) { if (i=="main") continue; do_some_actions (); break; } These approaches work but feel to me like I've overlooked something. Is there a better approach?

  • how to better use of eclipse code templates (PHP)?

    - by pocketfullofcheese
One particular problem I was having was using ${word_selection} in an Eclipse PDT template. I was recently trying to use some code templates with Eclipse PDT 2.1 to speed up some common tasks. We use a lot of getters/setters, so I wrote the following template. function get${word_selection}() { return $$this->getData('${word_selection}'); } function set${word_selection}($$${word_selection}) { $$this->setData('${word_selection}', $$${word_selection}); } I named the template "getset" and the only way I know to use the Code Assist is to type: "getset" then hit my code assist keys (I have it set to Esc, but I think the default was Ctrl+Space). The problem is, this doesn't actually let me select a word to be used by the ${word_selection}. how do I type in my template name, hit the key combo, and have a word selected all at the same time? I also want to know what kinds of templates people have set up and any other tips for using templates to speed of programming.

  • What should the SQL keyword "ISABOUT" [deprecated?] be replaced with?

    - by Atomiton
In MS SQL Full-text search, I'm using ISABOUT in my queries. For example, this should return the top 10 ProductIDs (PK) with a RANK Field in the ProductDetails Table SELECT * FROM CONTAINSTABLE( ProductDetails, *, ISABOUT("Nikon" WEIGHT (1.0), "Cameras" Weight(0.9)), 10 ) However, according to the SQL Documentation ISABOUT is deprecated. So, I have two questions: What is ISABOUT being replaced with? DO I even NEED any extra SQL Command there? ( IOW, would just putting the search phrase 'Nikon Cameras' be better? ) What I was originally trying to accomplish here was to weight the first word the highest, then the second word lower, and keep descending to 0.5 where I would just rank the remaining words at 0.5. My logic ( and perhaps it's flawed ) was that people's most relevant search words usually happen near the beginning of a phrase ( in English ). Am I going about this the wrong way? Is there a better way? Am I asking too many questions? (^_^) Thanks all for your time...
