• HELP!! Delayed-job: Rake aborted! Can't modify frozen hash

  Too bad even the trace doesn't say which hash is involved. Sorry this post is long: am trying to provide enough context to be meaningful. Occurs intermittently when rake jobs:work is pulling a command out of delayed_jobs while my status observer is in the process of parsing a log file for detailed results of the previous delayed_job denizen. I have an observer class (in RAILS_ROOT/lib ) which listens for the events, makes a copy of them and calls the owner class ( in apps/models ) which then calls on the log parser (also in /lib) to do the actual work. (Should both of those classes, the observer and the parser be in app/models?) Am due to deliver this application in a few days and this is killing it (and me). Am using DirectoryWatcher to look for flag files that indicate the start and finish of the delayed_jobs.   I currently have a problem when pairing my computer with a PS4 remote. On my Ubuntu 14.04 I removed everything related with bluez and bluetooth, and I built and installed bluez 5.19. • Is MEF an all-or-nothing affair?

  I've had a few questions about MEF recently, but here's the big one -- is it really all-or-nothing, as it appears to be? My basic application structure is simply an app, several shared libraries that are intended to be singletons, and several different plugins (which may implement different interfaces). The app loads the plugins, and both the app and all plugins need to access the shared libraries. My first go at MEF was fairly successful, although I made some stupid mistakes along the way because I was trying so many different things, I just got confused at times. But in the end, last night I got my smallish test app running with MEF, some shared libraries, and one plugin. Now I'm moving onto the target app, which I already described. And it's the multiple plugins part that has be a bit worried. My existing application already supports multiple plugins with different interfaces by using Reflection. I need to be able to uniquely identify each plugin so that the user can select one and get the expected behavior exposed by that plugin. The problem is that I don't know how to do this yet... but that's the topic of a different question. Ideally, I'd be able to take my existing plugin loader and use it as-is, while relying on MEF to do the shared library resolution. The problem is, I can't seem to get MEF to load them (i.e. I get a CompositionException when calling ComposeParts()) unless I also use MEF to load the plugin. And if I do this, well... then I need to know how to keep track of them as they get loaded so the user can select one from a list of plugins. What have your experiences been with trying to mix and match these approaches?

• How should I handle header files in a bundle?

  I want to develop a program that relies on plugins (here: loadable bundles) to work. Multiple plugins are asked to use the same AFNetworking ressource to make network requests. However, I don't know where to put AFNetworking and CustomPluginProtocol headers. Here is how my program structure looks like for now: MyApp.xcodeproj - AFNetworking - Header.h - Plugins - Plugin1.xcodeproj - PrincipalClass.m - Plugin2.xcodeproj - PrincipalClass.m - Classes - CustomPluginProtocol.h - MainClass.m Of course, every principalClass from PluginN complies to the CustomPluginProtocol. Do the headers have to be copied in each bundle ? Can I just include the main program AFNetworking headers from my plugins ? If so (and that's what I do for now), I don't have any completion. How can I get it ? Edit Ok, so maybe I wasn't clear in my question. I want my plugins to use sources from the main application, let's say CommonClass.m and CommonClass.h. Do the plugins need CommonClass.h in their bundle, and if not, how do I enable completion when I'm in the plugin scope ?

  I have some legacy code I want to port to C#. I cannot modify the C++ code, I just have to make do with what I'm given. So, the situation. I'm using SwIG, and I came across this function: void MarshalMe(int iNum, FooClass** ioFooClassArray); If I ran SWIG over this, it wouldn't know what to do with the array, so it will create a SWIGTYPE_p_pFooClass. Fair enough! C# code for this would look like void MarshalMe(int iNum, SWIGTYPE_p_p_FooClass ioFooClassArray); // Not ideal! • CRM vs VRM

  In a previous post, I discussed the potential power of combining social, interest, and location graphs in order to personalize marketing and shopping experiences for consumers.  Marketing companies have been trying to collect detailed information for that very purpose, a large majority of which comes from tracking people on the internet.  But their approaches stem from the one-way nature of traditional advertising.  With TV, radio, and magazines there is no opportunity to truly connect to customers, which has trained marketing companies to [covertly] collect data and segment customers into easily identifiable groups.  To a large extent, we think of this as CRM. But what if we turned this viewpoint upside-down to accommodate for the two-way nature of social media?  The notion of marketing as conversations was the basis for the Cluetrain, an early attempt at drawing attention to the fact that customers are actually unique humans.  A more practical implementation is Project VRM, which is a reverse CRM of sorts.  Instead of vendors managing their relationships with customers, customers manage their relationships with vendors. Your shopping experience is not really controlled by you; rather, its controlled by the retailer and advertisers.  And unfortunately, they typically don't give you a say in the matter.  Yes, they might tailor the content for "female age 25-35 interested in shoes" but that's not really the essence of you, is it?  A better approach is to the let consumers volunteer information about themselves.  And why wouldn't they if it means a better, more relevant shopping experience?  I'd gladly list out my likes and dislikes in exchange for getting rid of all those annoying cookies on my harddrive. I really like this diagram from Beyond SocialCRM as it captures the differences between CRM and VRM. The closest thing to VRM I can find is Buyosphere, a start-up that allows consumers to track their shopping history across many vendors, then share it appropriately.  Also, Amazon does a pretty good job allowing its customers to edit their profile, which includes everything you've ever purchased from Amazon.  You can mark items as gifts, or explicitly exclude them from their recommendation engine.  This is a win-win for both the consumer and retailer. So here is my plea to retailers: Instead of trying to infer my interests from snapshots of my day, please just ask me.  We'll both have a better experience in the long-run.

  Can you recommend a package that allows me to manage subscriptions to certain content on my website (not necessarily displayable) based on payment levels? Ideally, the software would allow logging in using both site-specific registration and PayPal/Facebook/Twitter/MyOpenId, etc. Preferably, it would also be open source, LAMP-based. One idea that I have in mind is hacking a shopping cart software like Zen-Cart but this may be an overkill if a non-shopping lighter-weight package exists.

  If you are looking for configure the iPlanet as Web server/proxy to use with the Oracle WebCenter Content, you probably won’t found an specific documentation for that or will found some old complex notes related to the old 10gR3. This post will help you out with few simple steps. That’s the diagram of the test scenario, considering that you will deploy in production in an cluster environment.   Because South Korean's are so busy, Tesco decided that its Homeplus grocery chain should offer a virtual alternative in subways.  As you can see in the video below, shoppers passing through a subway station can see a virtual representation of the store and scan items with their mobile phones.  This builds a shopping list which is delivered to their homes later that day. This is a very cool example of leveraging technology to offer a shopping experience that's different from bricks and clicks.

• Big data: An evening in the life of an actual buyer

  Here I am, and this is an actual story of one of my evenings, trying to spend money with a company and ultimately failing. I just gave up and bought a service from another vendor, not the incumbent. Here is that story and how I think big data could actually fix this (and potentially prevent some of this from happening). In the end this story should illustrate how big data can benefit me (get me what I want without causing grief) and the company I am trying to buy something from. Note: Lots of details left out, I have no intention of being the annoyed blogger moaning about a specific company. What did I want to get? We watch TV, we have internet and we do have a land line. The land line is from a different vendor then the TV and the internet. I have decided that this makes no sense and I was going to get a bundle (no need to infer who this is, I just picked the generic bundle word as this is what I want to get) of all three services as this seems to save me money. I also want to not talk to people, I just want to click on a website when I feel like it and get it all sorted. I do think that is reality. I want to just do my shopping at 9.30pm while watching silly reruns on TV. Problem 1 - Bad links So, I'm an existing customer of the company I want to buy my bundle from. I go to the website, I click on offers. Turns out they are offers for new customers. After grumbling about how good they are, I click on offers for existing customers. Bummer, it goes to offers for new customers, so I click again on the link for offers for existing customers. No cigar... it just does not work. Big data solutions: 1) Do not show an existing customer the offers for new customers unless they are the same => This is only partially doable without login, but if a customer logs in the application should always know that this is an existing customer. But in general, imagine I do this from my home going through the internet service of this vendor to their domain... an instant filter should move me into the "existing customer route". 2) Flag dead or incorrect links => I've clicked the link for "existing customer offers" at least 3 times in under 5 seconds... Identifying patterns like this is easy in Hadoop and can very quickly make a list of potentially incorrect links. No need for realtime fixing, just the fact that this link can be pro-actively fixed across my entire web domain is a good thing. Preventative maintenance! Problem 2 - Purchase cannot be completed Apart from the fact that the browsing pattern to actually get to what I want is poorly designed, my purchase never gets past a specific point. In other words, I put something into my shopping cart and when I want to move on the application either crashes (with me going to an error page) or hangs or goes into something like chat. So I try again, and again and again. I think I tried this entire path (while being logged in!!) at least 10 times over the course of 20 minutes. I also clicked on the feedback button and, frustrated as I was, tried to explain this did not work... Big Data Solutions: 1) This web site does shopping cart analysis. I got an email next day stating I have things in my shopping cart, just click here to complete my purchase. After the above experience, this just added insult to my pain... 2) What should have happened, is a Hadoop job going over all logged in customers that are on the buy flow. It should flag anyone who is trying (multiple attempts from the same user to do the same thing), analyze the shopping card, the clicks to identify what the customers wants, his feedback provided (note: always own your own website feedback, never just farm this out!!) and in a short turn around time (30 minutes to 2 hours or so) email me with a link to complete my purchase. Not with a link to my shopping cart 12 hours later, but a link to actually achieve what I wanted... Why should this company go through the big data effort? I do believe this is relatively easy to do using our Oracle Event Processing and Big Data Appliance solutions combined. It is almost so simple (to my mind) that it makes no sense that this is not in place? But, now I am ranting... Why is this interesting? It is because of $$$$. After trying really hard, I mean I did this all in the evening, and again in the morning before going to work. I kept on failing, But I really wanted this to work... so an email that said, sorry, we noticed you tried to get a bundle (the log knows what I wanted, where I failed, so easy to generate), here is the link to click and complete your purchase. And here is 2 movies on us as an apology would have kept me as a customer, and got the additional $$$$ per month for the next couple of years. It would also lead to upsell on my phone package etc. Instead, I went to a completely different company, bought service from them. Lost money for company A, negative sentiment for company A and me telling this story at the water cooler so I'm influencing more people to think negatively about company A. All in all, a loss of easy money, a ding in sentiment and image where a relatively simple solution exists and can be in place on the software I describe routinely in this blog... Can i point my first domain to the the hosting package and then run BlogEngine.NET and then point the second domain to the hosting package running NopCommerce cart? www.domain1.co.uk (blog) www.domain2.co.uk (e-commerce cart) In IIS i would just create a new application within the site and create the bindings for domain2.
