• How to Deploy an ASP.NET Web API- and Browser-based Application to a Production Environment

  (Please forgive if this is posted in an incorrect forum. We didn’t know exactly where to post it.) We have an ASP.NET Web API single page application - a browser-based app running in IIS to serve up HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript, which talks to the ASP.NET Web API endpoint only to access a database and transfer JSON data. Everything is working great in our development environment - that is, we have one Visual Studio solution with an ASP.NET Web API project and two class library projects for data access. While development and testing on development boxes, using IIS Express to a localhost:port to run the site and access the Web API, everything is fine. Now we need to move it to a production environment (and we’re having problems - or just not understanding what needs to be done). The production environment is all internal (nothing will be exposed on the public Internet). There are two domains. One domain, the corporate domain, is where all users login normally. The other domain, the process domain, contains the SQL Server instance that our app and Web API will need to access. The IT staff wants to put a DMZ between the two domains to house the IIS app and shield the users on the corporate domain from having access into the process domain directly. So, I guess what they want is: corp domain (end users) <– firewall (open port 80) <– DMZ (web server running IIS) <– firewall (open port 80 or 1433????) <– process domain (IIS for Web API and SQL Server) We’re developers and don’t really understand all the networking aspects, so we’re wondering how to deploy our browser/Web API application in this scenario. Do we need to break up our application so that all the client code (HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript/images/etc.) is on the IIS server in the DMZ, while the Web API gets installed on the server in the process domain? Or, does the entire app (client code and Web API) stay together on the IIS server in the DMZ, which then somehow accesses the SQL Server instance to get data? From the IIS server and app in the DMZ, would you simply access the Web API on the server in the process domain by going to "http://server/appname/api/getitmes"? In the second firewall between the DMZ and the process domain, would you have to open port 1433 or just port 80 since the Web API is a HTTP endpoint? Or, is there some better way of deployment (i.e., how ASP.NET Web API single page applications written all in HTML5 and JavaScript supposed to be deployed to production environments?)? I’m sure there are other questions, but we’ll start with these. Thanks!!! (Note: the servers are Win2k8 R2, SQL Server 2k8 R2, and IIS 7.5.)

  Hello ! Does anybody know about a good tool which help maintaining the database of an application ? I'm working on an application which uses a database (Microsoft Sql Server). When a development requires to change something in the database (e.g., structure, data migration...), we create a script (Transact-SQL script) and add it into our revision control tool (subversion - that tool also contains our code). Each script must add a line in a log table to keep a trace of all the scripts that have been ran into a database. In order to build a database for our application, one needs to run all scripts ordered by their creation date. I'm not really happy with this technique notably because it make application migration a bit hard. If we want to install a new version of the application somewhere, e.g., migrate from version 1.3 to 2.1, we must get all the scripts between these two versions. Then run them and ensure that everything is done in a transaction... For sure we could built home-made tools to help but I wonder if some tools already exists to do that kind of job.

  Hello Friends, I am having a very strange requirement, Our client is having one network management system (Netcool) which reads the number of machine from two text file. Now whenever new machine is added in those text files application needs restart. We need to develop one GUI which writes the new machine into network in those files and restart the said application. I was in favor of java based application for the same but here everybody wants solution in ASP .Net Now i am not sure is it possible to write file on sun solaris based operating system from .net application and then restarting the process which is running on the same machine.   VM software does a great job of saving state when you "turn it off," allowing instant and immediate return to that previous state. Is there some application for Windows that allows me to do the same thing, for any arbitrary software? It would allow me to save/restore state, possibly via a shell command or button that it appends to every window. Edit: For clarity, there are two types of apps: those that save their own states, and those that save others' states. Those that save their own state are like Chrome, which on load, reloads the windows you had open last time. That's not what I'm asking about; I'm asking for an app that can save the state of other apps, kind of like VM software does; but for any app. (A trivial test would be load notepad++, type a bunch of stuff, and save-state; on reset-state, you should be able to multi-level undo a lot of what you wrote, as if you never shut down the application.)

  I've had to add features to an application that depends on a database from another application. I've been able to set up a connection to this external database and pull data from it. However, I'm not sure how to get my main application to create a test database for this external application. It would be awesome if there some way to pull in the schema for this database and create it in the same manner that 'rake db:test:prepare' does. Is there any configuration capabilities for RSpec to do this, or will I have to roll my own task?

  I want to send a barcode, read with my cellphone, to my computer. My computer has a simple server running, which listens to barcodes. When a barcode arrives, the server app should be able to input the value of the received barcode into the active application (I don't really care which application is going to get the input, the user should be able to select gedit, a terminal window or the browser if they choose to). My language at the moment is Java on GNU/Linux (Ubuntu), so I know about the Robot class. But the Robot class emulates a keyboard, which means: when you send VK_1 on a US keyboard layout, the output is '1' indeed, but when you send VK_1 on another layout (like belgian, which I use), which requires shift for the '1' key, the output is '&' (this is the character on the '1' key, when you don't hold shift). I also found xsendkeys, but this application too requires you to specify whether you need to hold shift. So it will be able to send an 'a' but for an 'A' (thus capital) you need to specify you want to hold shift with your 'a'. Isn't there an easy way to do this, for GNU/Linux and Windows, just using strings. I want to be able to send "12a68dd" to the active application. And I also would like to be able to send UTF-8 characters to the active application. I have been looking for a solution, but most require the breakdown in multiple keystrokes, which are often dependent on the keyboard layout.

When I press F1 to display this help file and select "Search" tab, type something and click "List Topics" button, both the help window and the entire application freeze. What's interesting when I simply open the *.chm file in the Windows Explorer, the search functionality works brilliantly. In order to display the help file from my application, I am executing: Help.ShowHelp(this, helpFileName); This method is executed from within the main form of the application on the UI thread.

  This is relevent to this question about Crystal reports exception: “The Report Application Server failed” I have a report which has a on demand subreport. Id been passed to the subreport from the main report. When I run in crystal report it works fine.
