• How to handle 30k files in a project which requires them?

- by Jeremiah
Visual Studio 2010 RC - Silverlight Application We have a library of images that we need to have access to. They are given to us from a vendor (through an installer) and they are not in a database, they are files in a folder (a very large monster of a folder). We do not control when the images change, so the vendor needs to be able to override them individually. We get updates frequently enough from this vendor to state that these images change "randomly" and without our (programmer) knowledge. The problem: I don't want 30K images in SVN. Heck, I don't even want to imagine them in my Solution. However, our application requires them in order to run properly. So, our build/staging servers need access to these images (we have two build servers). The Question: How would you handle it when your application will not work as specified without access to each of 30k images and you don't control when those images change? I'm do not want to have a crazy large SVN repository. Because I don't know when any of these images change, I really don't want them in my solution (definitely do not want a large solution, either). I also don't want a bunch of manual steps to do every time these images change. Our mantra, up to this point, has always been, any developer could download from SVN, compile and run our app. These images are going to kill that mantra. I'm tempted to make a WCF service that will return images if they exist and a dummy image if they don't. This way all dev boxes will return a dummy image and our build/staging/production boxes will return real images (ones that actually have the vendor's image installer installed on). This has to be a solved problem. What have other people done to handle these types of problems? I'm open to suggestions.

• Cannot open simple script application on mac

- by streetpc
Mac OS X 10.6 I created a very simple app, which is only a wrapper of a shell script (so that I can select this script in application selectors, like startup apps). I try to launch it and yesterday it worked, but today I changed the executable script's content and name (with something that perfeclty works in a shell script launched in the Terminal) and it will only display a Finder-iconed dialog saying Cannot open the application because it is not supported on this kind of Mac. I restored the previous script (content/name) but I still get the error! Same when re-bundling the app from scratch, or completely changing the bundle identifier… If I try to open it in the Terminal using open My.app, I get The application cannot be opened because it has an incorrect executable format. But when I executes directly the Contents/MacOS/Script, it allways works (iwth both contents). Also, it is displayed with correct icon and meta-information in the Finder (so I guess the Info.plist is understood). The app's file tree is: Contents/ Info.plist MacOS/ Script (executable bit set, works when launched directly) PkgInfo Resources/ AppIcon.icns Here is the Info.plist content: <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>CFBundleExecutable</key> <string>Script</string> <key>CFBundleIconFile</key> <string>AppIcon</string> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>asdf.ScriptApp</string> <key>CFBundleInfoDictionaryVersion</key> <string>6.0</string> <key>CFBundleName</key> <string>My script</string> <key>CFBundlePackageType</key> <string>APPL</string> <key>CFBundleShortVersionString</key> <string>1.0</string> <key>CFBundleSignature</key> <string>????</string> <key>CFBundleVersion</key> <string>1</string> <key>LSMinimumSystemVersion</key> <string>10.4</string> </dict> </plist> And the PkgInfo file only contains APPL????. I tested the Script with a simple echo "ok" and echo "ok" >/tmp/test (plus #!/bin/sh header). So my questions are: Is there some kind of validity caching for applications ? based on what ? how do I flush it ? Where does this message come from ? I tried to google it but all I get is a page talking about 32/64 bits Java…

• Using the ASP.NET Cache to cache data in a Model or Business Object layer, without a dependency on System.Web in the layer - Part One.

- by Rhames
ASP.NET applications can make use of the System.Web.Caching.Cache object to cache data and prevent repeated expensive calls to a database or other store. However, ideally an application should make use of caching at the point where data is retrieved from the database, which typically is inside a Business Objects or Model layer. One of the key features of using a UI pattern such as Model-View-Presenter (MVP) or Model-View-Controller (MVC) is that the Model and Presenter (or Controller) layers are developed without any knowledge of the UI layer. Introducing a dependency on System.Web into the Model layer would break this independence of the Model from the View. This article gives a solution to this problem, using dependency injection to inject the caching implementation into the Model layer at runtime. This allows caching to be used within the Model layer, without any knowledge of the actual caching mechanism that will be used. Create a sample application to use the caching solution Create a test SQL Server database This solution uses a SQL Server database with the same Sales data used in my previous post on calculating running totals. The advantage of using this data is that it gives nice slow queries that will exaggerate the effect of using caching! To create the data, first create a new SQL database called CacheSample. Next run the following script to create the Sale table and populate it: USE CacheSample GO CREATE TABLE Sale(DayCount smallint, Sales money) CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX ndx_DayCount ON Sale(DayCount) go INSERT Sale VALUES (1,120) INSERT Sale VALUES (2,60) INSERT Sale VALUES (3,125) INSERT Sale VALUES (4,40) DECLARE @DayCount smallint, @Sales money SET @DayCount = 5 SET @Sales = 10 WHILE @DayCount < 5000 BEGIN INSERT Sale VALUES (@DayCount,@Sales) SET @DayCount = @DayCount + 1 SET @Sales = @Sales + 15 END Next create a stored procedure to calculate the running total, and return a specified number of rows from the Sale table, using the following script: USE [CacheSample] GO SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO -- ============================================= -- Author: Robin -- Create date: -- Description: -- ============================================= CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[spGetRunningTotals] -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here @HighestDayCount smallint = null AS BEGIN -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from -- interfering with SELECT statements. SET NOCOUNT ON; IF @HighestDayCount IS NULL SELECT @HighestDayCount = MAX(DayCount) FROM dbo.Sale DECLARE @SaleTbl TABLE (DayCount smallint, Sales money, RunningTotal money) DECLARE @DayCount smallint, @Sales money, @RunningTotal money SET @RunningTotal = 0 SET @DayCount = 0 DECLARE rt_cursor CURSOR FOR SELECT DayCount, Sales FROM Sale ORDER BY DayCount OPEN rt_cursor FETCH NEXT FROM rt_cursor INTO @DayCount,@Sales WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0 AND @DayCount <= @HighestDayCount BEGIN SET @RunningTotal = @RunningTotal + @Sales INSERT @SaleTbl VALUES (@DayCount,@Sales,@RunningTotal) FETCH NEXT FROM rt_cursor INTO @DayCount,@Sales END CLOSE rt_cursor DEALLOCATE rt_cursor SELECT DayCount, Sales, RunningTotal FROM @SaleTbl END GO Create the Sample ASP.NET application In Visual Studio create a new solution and add a class library project called CacheSample.BusinessObjects and an ASP.NET web application called CacheSample.UI. The CacheSample.BusinessObjects project will contain a single class to represent a Sale data item, with all the code to retrieve the sales from the database included in it for simplicity (normally I would at least have a separate Repository or other object that is responsible for retrieving data, and probably a data access layer as well, but for this sample I want to keep it simple). The C# code for the Sale class is shown below: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Data; using System.Data.SqlClient; namespace CacheSample.BusinessObjects { public class Sale { public Int16 DayCount { get; set; } public decimal Sales { get; set; } public decimal RunningTotal { get; set; } public static IEnumerable<Sale> GetSales(int? highestDayCount) { List<Sale> sales = new List<Sale>(); SqlParameter highestDayCountParameter = new SqlParameter("@HighestDayCount", SqlDbType.SmallInt); if (highestDayCount.HasValue) highestDayCountParameter.Value = highestDayCount; else highestDayCountParameter.Value = DBNull.Value; string connectionStr = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager .ConnectionStrings["CacheSample"].ConnectionString; using(SqlConnection sqlConn = new SqlConnection(connectionStr)) using (SqlCommand sqlCmd = sqlConn.CreateCommand()) { sqlCmd.CommandText = "spGetRunningTotals"; sqlCmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(highestDayCountParameter); sqlConn.Open(); using (SqlDataReader dr = sqlCmd.ExecuteReader()) { while (dr.Read()) { Sale newSale = new Sale(); newSale.DayCount = dr.GetInt16(0); newSale.Sales = dr.GetDecimal(1); newSale.RunningTotal = dr.GetDecimal(2); sales.Add(newSale); } } } return sales; } } } The static GetSale() method makes a call to the spGetRunningTotals stored procedure and then reads each row from the returned SqlDataReader into an instance of the Sale class, it then returns a List of the Sale objects, as IEnnumerable<Sale>. A reference to System.Configuration needs to be added to the CacheSample.BusinessObjects project so that the connection string can be read from the web.config file. In the CacheSample.UI ASP.NET project, create a single web page called ShowSales.aspx, and make this the default start up page. This page will contain a single button to call the GetSales() method and a label to display the results. The html mark up and the C# code behind are shown below: ShowSales.aspx <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="ShowSales.aspx.cs" Inherits="CacheSample.UI.ShowSales" %>

Cache Sample - Show All Sales

<asp:Button ID="btnTest1" runat="server" onclick="btnTest1_Click" Text="Get All Sales" /> <asp:Label ID="lblResults" runat="server"></asp:Label>

ShowSales.aspx.cs using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.UI; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using CacheSample.BusinessObjects; namespace CacheSample.UI { public partial class ShowSales : System.Web.UI.Page { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } protected void btnTest1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch stopWatch = new System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch(); stopWatch.Start(); var sales = Sale.GetSales(null); var lastSales = sales.Last(); stopWatch.Stop(); lblResults.Text = string.Format( "Count of Sales: {0}, Last DayCount: {1}, Total Sales: {2}. Query took {3} ms", sales.Count(), lastSales.DayCount, lastSales.RunningTotal, stopWatch.ElapsedMilliseconds); } } } Finally we need to add a connection string to the CacheSample SQL Server database, called CacheSample, to the web.config file: <configuration> <connectionStrings> <addname="CacheSample" connectionString="data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=CacheSample" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> <system.web> <compilationdebug="true"targetFramework="4.0" /> </system.web> </configuration> Run the application and click the button a few times to see how long each call to the database takes. On my system, each query takes about 450ms. Next I shall look at a solution to use the ASP.NET caching to cache the data returned by the query, so that subsequent requests to the GetSales() method are much faster. Adding Data Caching Support I am going to create my caching support in a separate project called CacheSample.Caching, so the next step is to add a class library to the solution. We shall be using the application configuration to define the implementation of our caching system, so we need a reference to System.Configuration adding to the project. ICacheProvider<T> Interface The first step in adding caching to our application is to define an interface, called ICacheProvider, in the CacheSample.Caching project, with methods to retrieve any data from the cache or to retrieve the data from the data source if it is not present in the cache. Dependency Injection will then be used to inject an implementation of this interface at runtime, allowing the users of the interface (i.e. the CacheSample.BusinessObjects project) to be completely unaware of how the caching is actually implemented. As data of any type maybe retrieved from the data source, it makes sense to use generics in the interface, with a generic type parameter defining the data type associated with a particular instance of the cache interface implementation. The C# code for the ICacheProvider interface is shown below: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; namespace CacheSample.Caching { public interface ICacheProvider { } public interface ICacheProvider<T> : ICacheProvider { T Fetch(string key, Func<T> retrieveData, DateTime? absoluteExpiry, TimeSpan? relativeExpiry); IEnumerable<T> Fetch(string key, Func<IEnumerable<T>> retrieveData, DateTime? absoluteExpiry, TimeSpan? relativeExpiry); } } The empty non-generic interface will be used as a type in a Dictionary generic collection later to store instances of the ICacheProvider<T> implementation for reuse, I prefer to use a base interface when doing this, as I think the alternative of using object makes for less clear code. The ICacheProvider<T> interface defines two overloaded Fetch methods, the difference between these is that one will return a single instance of the type T and the other will return an IEnumerable<T>, providing support for easy caching of collections of data items. Both methods will take a key parameter, which will uniquely identify the cached data, a delegate of type Func<T> or Func<IEnumerable<T>> which will provide the code to retrieve the data from the store if it is not present in the cache, and absolute or relative expiry policies to define when a cached item should expire. Note that at present there is no support for cache dependencies, but I shall be showing a method of adding this in part two of this article. CacheProviderFactory Class We need a mechanism of creating instances of our ICacheProvider<T> interface, using Dependency Injection to get the implementation of the interface. To do this we shall create a CacheProviderFactory static class in the CacheSample.Caching project. This factory will provide a generic static method called GetCacheProvider<T>(), which shall return instances of ICacheProvider<T>. We can then call this factory method with the relevant data type (for example the Sale class in the CacheSample.BusinessObject project) to get a instance of ICacheProvider for that type (e.g. call CacheProviderFactory.GetCacheProvider<Sale>() to get the ICacheProvider<Sale> implementation). The C# code for the CacheProviderFactory is shown below: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using CacheSample.Caching.Configuration; namespace CacheSample.Caching { public static class CacheProviderFactory { private static Dictionary<Type, ICacheProvider> cacheProviders = new Dictionary<Type, ICacheProvider>(); private static object syncRoot = new object(); ///
/// Factory method to create or retrieve an implementation of the /// ICacheProvider interface for type <typeparamref name="T"/>. ///
///<typeparam name="T"> /// The type that this cache provider instance will work with ///</typeparam> ///<returns>An instance of the implementation of ICacheProvider for type ///<typeparamref name="T"/>, as specified by the application /// configuration</returns> public static ICacheProvider<T> GetCacheProvider<T>() { ICacheProvider<T> cacheProvider = null; // Get the Type reference for the type parameter T Type typeOfT = typeof(T); // Lock the access to the cacheProviders dictionary // so multiple threads can work with it lock (syncRoot) { // First check if an instance of the ICacheProvider implementation // already exists in the cacheProviders dictionary for the type T if (cacheProviders.ContainsKey(typeOfT)) cacheProvider = (ICacheProvider<T>)cacheProviders[typeOfT]; else { // There is not already an instance of the ICacheProvider in // cacheProviders for the type T // so we need to create one // Get the Type reference for the application's implementation of // ICacheProvider from the configuration Type cacheProviderType = Type.GetType(CacheProviderConfigurationSection.Current. CacheProviderType); if (cacheProviderType != null) { // Now get a Type reference for the Cache Provider with the // type T generic parameter Type typeOfCacheProviderTypeForT = cacheProviderType.MakeGenericType(new Type[] { typeOfT }); if (typeOfCacheProviderTypeForT != null) { // Create the instance of the Cache Provider and add it to // the cacheProviders dictionary for future use cacheProvider = (ICacheProvider<T>)Activator. CreateInstance(typeOfCacheProviderTypeForT); cacheProviders.Add(typeOfT, cacheProvider); } } } } return cacheProvider; } } } As this code uses Activator.CreateInstance() to create instances of the ICacheProvider<T> implementation, which is a slow process, the factory class maintains a Dictionary of the previously created instances so that a cache provider needs to be created only once for each type. The type of the implementation of ICacheProvider<T> is read from a custom configuration section in the application configuration file, via the CacheProviderConfigurationSection class, which is described below. CacheProviderConfigurationSection Class The implementation of ICacheProvider<T> will be specified in a custom configuration section in the application’s configuration. To handle this create a folder in the CacheSample.Caching project called Configuration, and add a class called CacheProviderConfigurationSection to this folder. This class will extend the System.Configuration.ConfigurationSection class, and will contain a single string property called CacheProviderType. The C# code for this class is shown below: using System; using System.Configuration; namespace CacheSample.Caching.Configuration { internal class CacheProviderConfigurationSection : ConfigurationSection { public static CacheProviderConfigurationSection Current { get { return (CacheProviderConfigurationSection) ConfigurationManager.GetSection("cacheProvider"); } } [ConfigurationProperty("type", IsRequired=true)] public string CacheProviderType { get { return (string)this["type"]; } } } } Adding Data Caching to the Sales Class We now have enough code in place to add caching to the GetSales() method in the CacheSample.BusinessObjects.Sale class, even though we do not yet have an implementation of the ICacheProvider<T> interface. We need to add a reference to the CacheSample.Caching project to CacheSample.BusinessObjects so that we can use the ICacheProvider<T> interface within the GetSales() method. Once the reference is added, we can first create a unique string key based on the method name and the parameter value, so that the same cache key is used for repeated calls to the method with the same parameter values. Then we get an instance of the cache provider for the Sales type, using the CacheProviderFactory, and pass the existing code to retrieve the data from the database as the retrievalMethod delegate in a call to the Cache Provider Fetch() method. The C# code for the modified GetSales() method is shown below: public static IEnumerable<Sale> GetSales(int? highestDayCount) { string cacheKey = string.Format("CacheSample.BusinessObjects.GetSalesWithCache({0})", highestDayCount); return CacheSample.Caching.CacheProviderFactory. GetCacheProvider<Sale>().Fetch(cacheKey, delegate() { List<Sale> sales = new List<Sale>(); SqlParameter highestDayCountParameter = new SqlParameter("@HighestDayCount", SqlDbType.SmallInt); if (highestDayCount.HasValue) highestDayCountParameter.Value = highestDayCount; else highestDayCountParameter.Value = DBNull.Value; string connectionStr = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager. ConnectionStrings["CacheSample"].ConnectionString; using (SqlConnection sqlConn = new SqlConnection(connectionStr)) using (SqlCommand sqlCmd = sqlConn.CreateCommand()) { sqlCmd.CommandText = "spGetRunningTotals"; sqlCmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(highestDayCountParameter); sqlConn.Open(); using (SqlDataReader dr = sqlCmd.ExecuteReader()) { while (dr.Read()) { Sale newSale = new Sale(); newSale.DayCount = dr.GetInt16(0); newSale.Sales = dr.GetDecimal(1); newSale.RunningTotal = dr.GetDecimal(2); sales.Add(newSale); } } } return sales; }, null, new TimeSpan(0, 10, 0)); } This example passes the code to retrieve the Sales data from the database to the Cache Provider as an anonymous method, however it could also be written as a lambda. The main advantage of using an anonymous function (method or lambda) is that the code inside the anonymous function can access the parameters passed to the GetSales() method. Finally the absolute expiry is set to null, and the relative expiry set to 10 minutes, to indicate that the cache entry should be removed 10 minutes after the last request for the data. As the ICacheProvider<T> has a Fetch() method that returns IEnumerable<T>, we can simply return the results of the Fetch() method to the caller of the GetSales() method. This should be all that is needed for the GetSales() method to now retrieve data from a cache after the first time the data has be retrieved from the database. Implementing a ASP.NET Cache Provider The final step is to actually implement the ICacheProvider<T> interface, and add the implementation details to the web.config file for the dependency injection. The cache provider implementation needs to have access to System.Web. Therefore it could be placed in the CacheSample.UI project, or in its own project that has a reference to System.Web. Implementing the Cache Provider in a separate project is my favoured approach. Create a new project inside the solution called CacheSample.CacheProvider, and add references to System.Web and CacheSample.Caching to this project. Add a class to the project called AspNetCacheProvider. Make the class a generic class by adding the generic parameter <T> and indicate that the class implements ICacheProvider<T>. The C# code for the AspNetCacheProvider class is shown below: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; using System.Web.Caching; using CacheSample.Caching; namespace CacheSample.CacheProvider { public class AspNetCacheProvider<T> : ICacheProvider<T> { #region ICacheProvider<T> Members public T Fetch(string key, Func<T> retrieveData, DateTime? absoluteExpiry, TimeSpan? relativeExpiry) { return FetchAndCache<T>(key, retrieveData, absoluteExpiry, relativeExpiry); } public IEnumerable<T> Fetch(string key, Func<IEnumerable<T>> retrieveData, DateTime? absoluteExpiry, TimeSpan? relativeExpiry) { return FetchAndCache<IEnumerable<T>>(key, retrieveData, absoluteExpiry, relativeExpiry); } #endregion #region Helper Methods private U FetchAndCache(string key, Func retrieveData, DateTime? absoluteExpiry, TimeSpan? relativeExpiry) { U value; if (!TryGetValue(key, out value)) { value = retrieveData(); if (!absoluteExpiry.HasValue) absoluteExpiry = Cache.NoAbsoluteExpiration; if (!relativeExpiry.HasValue) relativeExpiry = Cache.NoSlidingExpiration; HttpContext.Current.Cache.Insert(key, value, null, absoluteExpiry.Value, relativeExpiry.Value); } return value; } private bool TryGetValue(string key, out U value) { object cachedValue = HttpContext.Current.Cache.Get(key); if (cachedValue == null) { value = default(U); return false; } else { try { value = (U)cachedValue; return true; } catch { value = default(U); return false; } } } #endregion } } The two interface Fetch() methods call a private method called FetchAndCache(). This method first checks for a element in the HttpContext.Current.Cache with the specified cache key, and if so tries to cast this to the specified type (either T or IEnumerable<T>). If the cached element is found, the FetchAndCache() method simply returns it. If it is not found in the cache, the method calls the retrievalMethod delegate to get the data from the data source, and then adds this to the HttpContext.Current.Cache. The final step is to add the AspNetCacheProvider class to the relevant custom configuration section in the CacheSample.UI.Web.Config file. To do this there needs to be a <configSections> element added as the first element in <configuration>. This will match a custom section called <cacheProvider> with the CacheProviderConfigurationSection. Then we add a <cacheProvider> element, with a type property set to the fully qualified assembly name of the AspNetCacheProvider class, as shown below: <configuration> <configSections> <sectionname="cacheProvider" type="CacheSample.Base.Configuration.CacheProviderConfigurationSection, CacheSample.Base" /> </configSections> <connectionStrings> <addname="CacheSample" connectionString="data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=CacheSample" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> <cacheProvidertype="CacheSample.CacheProvider.AspNetCacheProvider`1, CacheSample.CacheProvider, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null"> </cacheProvider> <system.web> <compilationdebug="true"targetFramework="4.0" /> </system.web> </configuration> One point to note is that the fully qualified assembly name of the AspNetCacheProvider class includes the notation `1 after the class name, which indicates that it is a generic class with a single generic type parameter. The CacheSample.UI project needs to have references added to CacheSample.Caching and CacheSample.CacheProvider so that the actual application is aware of the relevant cache provider implementation. Conclusion After implementing this solution, you should have a working cache provider mechanism, that will allow the middle and data access layers to implement caching support when retrieving data, without any knowledge of the actually caching implementation. If the UI is not ASP.NET based, if for example it is Winforms or WPF, the implementation of ICacheProvider<T> would be written around whatever technology is available. It could even be a standalone caching system that takes full responsibility for adding and removing items from a global store. The next part of this article will show how this caching mechanism may be extended to provide support for cache dependencies, such as the System.Web.Caching.SqlCacheDependency. Another possible extension would be to cache the cache provider implementations instead of storing them in a static Dictionary in the CacheProviderFactory. This would prevent a build up of seldom used cache providers in the application memory, as they could be removed from the cache if not used often enough, although in reality there are probably unlikely to be vast numbers of cache provider implementation instances, as most applications do not have a massive number of business object or model types.

• Granting administrator privileges to an application launched at startup without UAC prompt?

- by iKenndac
Background I've written a small C#/.NET 4.0 application that syncs various settings from a game installed in Program Files to and from other copies of the same game on different machines (think Chrome bookmark sync, but for this game). The sync itself is a relatively simple affair, dealing with files stored inside the game's Program Files folder. On my machine, this works fine without having to elevate my application through UAC. Windows 7 makes the game use Program Files virtualisation and my application works fine with that. However, on a lot of tester's machines, I'm getting reports that the application either can't work with the files and in come cases can't even see the game's folder! Having the user right-click and "Run as Administrator" solves the problem in every case. So, we just set the application's manifest to require admin privileges, right? That's fine (although not ideal) for when the user manually invokes the application or the sync process because they'll be interacting with the application and ready to accept a UAC request. However, one of the features of my application is a "Sync Automatically" option, which allows the user to "set and forget" the application. With this set, the application puts itself into the registry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to be run at startup and sits in the system tray syncing the settings in the background as needed. Obviously, I need to be smarter here. Presenting a UAC prompt as soon as the user logs in to their account or at random intervals afterwards isn't the way forwards. So, my question! What's the best way to approach a situation where I'd need to run an application at startup that needs administrator privileges? Is there a way to have the user authorise an installation that causes the system to automatically run the application with the correct privileges without a prompt at startup/login?

• Facebook graph api photo upload to a fan page album

- by kielie
Hi guys, I have gotten the photo upload function to work with this code, <?php include_once 'facebook-php-sdk/src/facebook.php'; include_once 'config.php';//this file contains the secret key and app id etc... $facebook = new Facebook(array( 'appId' => FACEBOOK_APP_ID, 'secret' => FACEBOOK_SECRET_KEY, 'cookie' => true, 'domain' => 'your callback url goes here' )); $session = $facebook->getSession(); if (!$session) { $url = $facebook->getLoginUrl(array( 'canvas' => 1, 'fbconnect' => 0, 'req_perms'=>'user_photos,publish_stream,offline_access'//here I am requesting the required permissions, it should work with publish_stream alone, but I added the others just to be safe )); echo 'You are not logged in, please <a href="' . $facebook->getLoginUrl() . '">Login to access this application'; } else{ try { $uid = $facebook->getUser(); $me = $facebook->api('/me'); $token = $session['access_token'];//here I get the token from the $session array $album_id = 'the id of the album you wish to upload to eg: 1122'; //upload your photo $file= 'test.jpg'; $args = array( 'message' => 'Photo from application', ); $args[basename($file)] = '@' . realpath($file); $ch = curl_init(); $url = 'https://graph.facebook.com/'.$album_id.'/photos?access_token='.$token; curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $url); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HEADER, false); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POST, true); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, $args); $data = curl_exec($ch); //returns the id of the photo you just uploaded print_r(json_decode($data,true)); } catch(FacebookApiException $e){ echo "Error:" . print_r($e, true); } } ?> I hope this helps, a friend and I smashed our heads against a wall for quite some time to get this working! Anyways, here is my question, how can I upload a image to a fan page? I am struggling to get this working, when I upload the image all I get is the photo id but no photo in the album. So basically, when the user clicks the upload button on our application, I need it to upload the image they created to our fan page's album with them tagged on it. Anyone know how I can accomplish this?

• GUI and non gui difference

- by stdcinout
hi guys as i know we have gui and non gui application today. but remember back in the old days there were many application thats kinda like half gui half not . the applications are text based and it has no GUI like what we have now if we were to use java swing library or etc. but you could pretty much select the area that you want using keyboard shortcut . pretty much looks like vim with more features. basically it is text based but not fully gui so my question is how did they do this ? to make the text output persistent and process the data as being inputed non sequentially (non gui typically inputs data non sequentially)

• Trying to run an ASP.NET MVC application using Mono on Apache with FastCGI

- by Arda Xi
I have a hosting account with DreamHost and I would like to use the same account to run ASP.NET applications. I have an application deployed in a subdomain, a .htaccess with a handler like this: # Define the FastCGI Mono launcher as an Apache handler and let # it manage this web-application (its files and subdirectories) SetHandler monoWrapper Action monoWrapper /home/arienh4/<domain>/cgi-bin/mono.fcgi virtual My mono.fcgi is set up as such: #!/bin/sh #umask 0077 exec >>/home/arienh4/tmp/mono-fcgi.log exec 2>>/home/arienh4/tmp/mono-fcgi.err echo $(date +"[%F %T]") Starting fastcgi-mono-server2 cd / chmod 0700 /home/arienh4/tmp/mono-fcgi.sock echo $$>/home/arienh4/tmp/mono-fcgi.pid # stdin is the socket handle export PATH="/home/arienh4/mono/bin:$PATH" export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/home/arienh4/mono/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" export TMP="/home/arienh4/tmp" export MONO_SHARED_DIR="/home/arienh4/tmp" exec /home/arienh4/mono/bin/mono /home/arienh4/mono/lib/mono/2.0/fastcgi-mono-server2.exe \ /logfile=/home/arienh4/logs/fastcgi-mono-web.log /loglevels=All \ /applications=/:/home/arienh4/<domain> I took this from the Mono site for CGI. I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly though. This code is resulting in this error: Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error. Use 'LimitInternalRecursion' to increase the limit if necessary. Use 'LogLevel debug' to get a backtrace. I have no idea what's causing this. As far as I can see, Mono isn't even hit (no log files are created).

• Building XUL app a-la SongBird

- by Ben
Hi, I've started exploring XUL Runner as a potential tool for an upcoming app. I can get some good examples running using the command line xulrunner-bin myapp. How can compile it all in a native looking application, like SongBird does. I understand SongBird packages the entire xul runtime with it, and I'm happy with that. I'm just wondering is there are any tool I can use to compile my xul project as a standalone app? Any Mac and/or PC hint much appreciated! EDIT: I guess what I'm looking for is a way to generate a Mac and/or PC XUL stub application (but not an installer). Is there something like that? cheers Ben

• Method to capture a screenshot of user's browser to aid in bug reporting

- by Buzz
I'm looking for a way to make it easy for technically unsophisticated users to submit screenshots of their browser to me, to aid in debugging web application problems. There will be a button on all pages inside a web application they can use to report problems, which I would like to submit a screenshot (among other things). http://www.snapabug.com/ is very close to what I want, but I need to be able to customize a few things that service won't let me. Production environment is LAMP. I expect there must be something Flash-based that can do this, but I've not been able to find something. Thanks!

• How can I prompt user for additional permissions on page load?

- by Rew
Note: The application I'm building is a website type Facebook Application that uses Facebook Connect. I can prompt the user with a request for Extended Permissions using the following FBML code: <fb:prompt-permission perms="read_stream,publish_stream"> Grant permission for status updates </fb:prompt-permission> Taken from here. This creates a link on the page that must be clicked by the user in order to trigger the prompt to display. My question is: Is it possible to display this prompt automatically, when the page loads, without requiring the user to click on the link? Also, in reply to the answer below, I'd like to avoid displaying the link. Would prefer a neat way to do this, if that fails the least dirty method will do :-)

• Wicket testing - AnnotApplicationContextMock - There is no application attached to current thread ma

- by John
I've written a couple of tests for a small web app, but I get an error when I try to run the page specific tests that makes use of WicketTester. Google sends me to a mailing list for Apache Wicket, where a user experienced the same exception. • Core Location Best Placement and User Interruption

- by b.dot
Hi All, My application uses Core Location in three different views. It's working perfectly. In my first view, I subclass the CLLocationManager and use protocol methods for location updates to my calling class. Before I install the framework and code in my other classes, I was wondering: Is the protocol method the best way? What happens to the Core Location execution if the user exits the view or quits the app while it's trying to get a location fix? Is the location task terminated with the GPS system turned off immediately? If the user simply switches to another view, is it OK to assume that I can start Core Location in the next view without regard to the last? Where should the first update location call be placed. Should the application delegate instantiate the CLLocation Manager class using protocol so that it can update any of the views chosen or should each class instantiate the manager. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Apple Service Diagnostic application on USB key?

- by Matt 'Trouble' Esse
I found the following in a text file, and I would like to use the Apple Service Diagnostic Application from a bootable USB key but I cannot find where to download it or set it up? Also is this free software or does it require a separate licence? It sounds like it would be a useful tool for diagnosing Mac problems. The Apple Service Diagnostic application is designed to run both EFI and Mac OS X tests from an external USB hard drive. Apple Service Diagnostic (EFI) runs low-level tests of the hardware directly and does not require Mac OS X, while Apple Service Diagnostic (OS) uses Mac OS X to run tests. Booting and Using the Apple Service Diagnostic Application - Before using Apple Service Diagnostic, disconnect any Ethernet network, USB, and audio cables. - With the USB hard drive containing ASD 3S123 plugged into a USB port, restart the computer and hold down the option key as the computer boots up into the Startup Manager. To run ASD (EFI) select the "ASD EFI 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. To run ASD (OS) select the "ASD OS 3S123" drive icon and press return or select it with a mouse click. ASD (EFI) will load in 20-30 seconds; ASD (OS) will load in 2-3 minutes. - After running ASD (OS) or ASD (EFI), press the Restart button to restart the computer back into the normal startup volume, or hold down the option key to get back to the Startup Manager. ASD is no longer delivered as an image to be restored onto a DVD. ASD 3S117 and newer versions requires installation onto an external USB hard drive. For more information, please refer to the document "Installing ASD on a USB hard drive".

• C# settings using ApplicationSettingsBase - roaming and common

- by Mark Pim
I'm using the Windows Forms Application settings architecture (or however you're supposed to refer to it) and am successfully saving user settings to AppData. What I want to do is have some settings common to all users of a particular machine and some settings which roam with users across machines. For example I have some settings relating to a peripheral attached to the computer (model, settings etc.) and some user preferences like user interface colours. The colours preferences should roam with the user, but the peripheral settings should stay on the local computer no matter who's logged on. How can I mark these types of settings so that some get stored in /AppData/... and some in /AppData? Note that I don't want Application level settings - each computer the app will be installed on will have different settings. I'm targetting .Net 3.0 if that makes a difference.

• In CAB is a service it's own module?

- by David Anderson
I'm learning Composite Application Block and I've hit a rock about services. I have my shell application in its own solution, and of course a test module in its own solution (developed and testing completely independent and external of the shell solution). If I created a service named "Sql Service", would I need to put this in it's own library, so that both the shell, and the module know the types? If that's the case, then for good practice, should I put the service project in the shell solution, or external just like a module (in it's own solution), even though it's not loaded as a module? Then, what about references? Should the shell reference this directly, add then add the service? Or load it as a module and add the service? I have a lot of confusion on where I should create my services, and if I should reference or load as modules..

• Clipboard bug in Wordpad in Windows 7 (accidentally pasting large file into application)

- by frenchglen
In Win7, I use Wordpad, and I really like it. For my needs it's lean and fast, yet has the formatting functionalities I'm after when working on my TXT/RTF files on a daily basis. I don't intend to change text editors. There's a really bad bug which has ALWAYS plagued me. If you have a large file contained in the clipboard, like a 238MB FLAC file, and you accidentally paste it into Wordpad for whatever reason - it hangs the application for a VERY long time (like 2 hours, it depends on how big the file is, because it tries to 'handle' it). You either have to close the application and lose any unsaved changes, or go do something else until the item has finished pasting into Wordpad (it actually eventually drops the file's icon in wordpad just like how it appears in Windows Explorer). It's a Windows bug, a Wordpad bug. Is there some solution for this? Or is the problem fixed in Windows 8 (if anyone can tell me)? .....I'm not going to try out Win8 myself, merely to answer this question - that's what I'm asking it on SuperUSer for! I'm really hoping it's one of those little-yet-big things that they've fixed in Win8 (like removing the 255-character file path limit in Explorer, which is awesome). Thank you for your help, if you have Win8 handy and can test this. :)

• AIR:- Desktop Application related to Window Component (Need some work around)

- by Mahesh Parate
Create custom component which contains Combobox and Datagrid. Application conations two button 1) Same Window and 2) New Window. (Label of two button) When you click on “Same Window” button your custom component should get added dynamically in your application. And when you click on “New Window” button your custom component should get open in different window (it should get shifted from application and should appear in Window component). Issue faced:- Clicking on Combobox, list is not getting open as change event doesn’t get fired in Native Window as it looses reference from main application. Issue with DataGrid in Native window (AIR). • DataGridEvent.COLUMN_STRETCH event get affected if try to open datagrid in Native Window. • DataGridEvent get fired but takes long time or even stuck while column stretch Note: Application is an Desktop Application. Only one instance is created in Application for your custom component to preserve current state on your custom component it can be Style, data, or other subcomponent state of your custom component (as above mentioned 2 component are just sample). Please find sample code below:- DataGridStretchIssue.mxml:- < ?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"? < mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" xmlns:local="*" width="800" height="500" < mx:Script < ![CDATA[ import mx.events.FlexEvent; import mx.core.Window; private var dgComp:DataGridComp = new DataGridComp(); private var win:Window; private function clickHandler(event:Event):void{ dgComp.percentWidth = 100; dgComp.percentHeight = 100; dgComp.x = 50; dgComp.y = 100; if(win){ win.close(); } this.addChild(dgComp); } private function openClickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void{ dgComp.x = 50; dgComp.y = 100; win = new Window();; win.width = 800; win.height = 500; win.addChild(dgComp); dgComp.percentWidth = 100; dgComp.percentHeight = 100; dgComp.x = 50; dgComp.y = 100; win.open(true) } < /mx:Script < mx:HBox <mx:Button id="btnID" click="clickHandler(event)" label="Same Window"/> <mx:Button id="btnIDOpen" click="openClickHandler(event)" label="New Window"/> < /mx:HBox < /mx:WindowedApplication DataGridComp.mxml < ?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"? < mx:Canvas xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" width="100%" height="100%" <mx:Script> import mx.events.DataGridEvent; import mx.collections.ArrayCollection; [Bindable] public var cards:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection( [ {label:"Visa", data:1}, {label:"MasterCard", data:2}, {label:"American Express", data:3} ]); private function stretchFn(event:DataGridEvent):void{ trace("--- Stretched---") } </mx:Script> <mx:HBox> <mx:ComboBox dataProvider="{cards}" width="150"/> <mx:DataGrid columnStretch="stretchFn(event)" > <mx:ArrayCollection> <mx:Object> <mx:Artist>Pavement</mx:Artist> <mx:Price>11.99</mx:Price> <mx:Album>Slanted and Enchanted</mx:Album> </mx:Object> <mx:Object> <mx:Artist>Pavement</mx:Artist> <mx:Album>Brighten the Corners</mx:Album> <mx:Price>11.99</mx:Price> </mx:Object> </mx:ArrayCollection> </mx:DataGrid> </mx:HBox> < /mx:Canvas Can any one suggest me some work around to make my code workable... :)
