• Why Do Browsers Leak Memory?

  A colleague and I were speaking about browsers (using browser control in a project), and it appears as plain as day that all browsers (Firefox, Chrome, IE, Opera) display the same characteristic or side-effect from their usage and that being 'Leaking Memory'. Can someone explain why that is the case? Surely as with any form of code, there should be proper garbage collection? PS. I've read about some defensive patterns on why this can happen from a developer's perspective. I am aware of an article Crockford wrote on IE; but why is the problem symptomatic of every browser?   I am using a <% foreach ...% loop to list a collection of items on my website. I want to add a different background color for the style of alternating rows in my list. I have found a way to do this but I am not satisfied with it as it seems like a hack. • MVVM in a canvas with usercontrols

  I have a MVVM WPF application that basically wants to be a single line diagram designer for an electrical distribution network. I have a canvas that must contains transformers, circuit breaker, lines and cables. My big problem is the design... How can i start? I think about a DesignerView, DesignerViewModel that contains an ObservableCollection of IDesignerItemViewModel that is my base class for all the element. But in this case I have to use ItemsControl to bind the content of the canvas to my collection but the pros is that I don't have to create usercontrol for each element but i'll solve most of the problems with DataTemplate (i suppose). Each element viewmodel mantain a link to a model persisted in a repository where i mantain my logical tree. Any hint about how to proceed, I have looked at many DiagramCanvas example but all of those use simple items most like simple rectangle...

• Linq to SQL DataContext Windsor IoC memory leak problem

  I have an ASP.NET MVC app that creates a Linq2SQL datacontext on a per-web-request basis using Castler Windsor IoC. For some reason that I do not fully understand, every time a new datacontext is created (on every web request) about 8k of memory is taken up and not released - which inevitably causes an OutOfMemory exception. If I force garbage collection the memory is released OK. My datacontext class is very simple: public class DataContextAccessor : IDataContextAccessor { private readonly DataContext dataContext; public DataContextAccessor(string connectionString) { dataContext = new DataContext(connectionString); } public DataContext DataContext { get { return dataContext; } } } The Windsor IoC webconfig to instantiate this looks like so: <component id="DataContextAccessor" service="DomainModel.Repositories.IDataContextAccessor, DomainModel" type="DomainModel.Repositories.DataContextAccessor, DomainModel" lifestyle="PerWebRequest"> <parameters> <connectionString> ... </connectionString> </parameters> </component> Does anyone know what the problem is, and how to fix it?

  In the simplified example, there are 2 Regular Expressions, one case sensitive, the other not.   I'm currently using jqGrid to display data. Part of jqGrid's interface will give you search options, posting back the search details in a JSON string, for example: {"groupOp":"AND","rules":[{"field":"PersonID","op":"eq","data":"123"},{"field":"LastName","op":"eq","data":"Smith"}]} (meaning i'm searching for personID = 123, and LastName = 'Smith') so what i'm hoping to do is somehow convert that back into something i can use server-side. Does anyone have a solution for this that may convert it back into an object of some kind? My current solution would be to convert into xml, parse with linq and create instances of my own 'search' class with a 'rules' collection.

• exception with Linq to SQL using sdf file

  Hi, I've set up a project with an SDF local database file and am trying to access it using an LINQ To SQL (".dbml") file. I have used the connection string provided by the sdf file and can instanciate the object with out a problem: thisDataContext = new MyDataContext(GetConnectionString()); However, whenever i try to access any information from it eg var collection = (from MyObject p in thisDataContext.MyTable select p); I get the error - "The table name is not valid. [ Token line number (if known) = 2,Token line offset (if known) = 14,Table name = Person ]" I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 .Net 3.5 and SQL 2008 CE. I gather something similar happened for SQL 2005 CE and a Hotfix was released, but i would have thought the fix would have been fixed in this version before release. Does anyone know the fix for this? Thanks

• Building big, immutable objects without constructors having long parameter lists

  Hi StackOverflow! I have some big (more than 3 fields) Objects which can and should be immutable. Every time I run into that case i tend to create constructor abominations with long parameter lists. It doesn't feel right, is hard to use and readability suffers. It is even worse if the fields are some sort of collection type like lists. A simple addSibling(S s) would ease the object creation so much but renders the object mutable. What do you guys use in such cases? I'm on Scala and Java, but i think the problem is language agnostic as long as the language is object oriented. Solutions I can think of: "Constructor abominations with long parameter lists" The Builder Pattern Thanks for your input!

  I'm getting an 'UnauthorizedAccesExpection - Invalid cross-thread access' exception when I try to raise a PropertyChanged event from within a subscription to an IObservable collection created through Observable.Interval(). With my limited threading knowledge I'm assuming that the interval is happening on some other thread while the event wants to happen on the UI thread??? An explanation of the problem would be very useful.   I am using NHibernate 2.0.1 and IPreUpdateEventListener,IPreInsertEventListener events for audit logging purposes. I have a basic entity that has a one to many relation like this. User-------Books From an ASP.NET MVC controller method i am adding a book to a user like this. Book book =new Book("LOTR"); var userBook=user.AddBook(book); After session flushing OnPreInsert event called once for newly created Book object than OnPreUpdate called for all books objects in user's books collection even they have not changed.So I am updating LastMofiedDate property of all books objects and I dont want to do this. Is this supposed behaviour of NHibernate or am I missing something?

Is IDEA all wet here, or is there a valid issue with the query? And what is the actual preferred alternative syntax for such a query?

  I'm trying to update a collection of records in my database using ActiveRecord's update_all. Enter script/console. MyModel.update_all("reserved = 1", :order => 'rand()', :limit => 1000) ActiveRecord thinks order is a column, says it's unknown and throws an exception. According to the documentation though, my syntax looks sane. This is RoR 2.3.5. When doing MyModel.update_all("reserved = 1") alone, it works just fine. Also if I do MyModel.update_all("reserved = 1", "reserve_type = 2", :order = "rand()", :limit = 1000) = 0 0 rows affected. I'm simply trying to do: UPDATE MyModel SET reserved=1, reserve_type=2 ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1000

  I'm loading an external script (that creates a new window component) into a panel, which works fine. Now, I want to access the created window from a callback function to register a closed event handler. I've tried the following: panel.load({ scripts: true, url: '/createWindow', callback: function(el, success, response, options) { panel.findByType("window")[0].on("close", function { alert("Closed"); }); } }); However, the panel seems to be empty all the time, the findByType method keeps returning an empty collection. I've tried adding events handlers for events like added to the panel but none of them got fired. So the question is: how do I access the window in the panel to register my close event handler on it?

How can I take advantage of OpenSessionInViewInterceptor found in Spring to catch any hibernate session that might open within a bean? I'm trying to elegantly solve the common “failed to lazily initialize a collection of role: your.Class.assocation no session or session was closed.” problem when trying to read from a yet uninitialized list of POJOs inside another POJO (A Tag entity retrieved by a DAO that contains a List of Project objects I want to read).   Scenario: Entity Framework 4 , POCO templates and Master Detail relation. Lets say I have a master type like this: //partial implementation of master entity partial class Master { public void AddDetail(x,y,z) { var detail = new Detail() { X = x, Y = y, Z = z, }; //add the detail to the master this.Details.Add(detail); } } If I then add a master instance to my context and commit, the details will not be saved: var masterObject = new Master(); masterObject.AddDetail(1,2,3); myContext.MasterSet.AddObject(masterObject); Is there any way to make the details to be persisted by reachabillity when using POCO templates? Or any other way? the Details collection in the Master entity is a FixUpCollection, so it ought to track the changes IMO. So, any ideas how to make this work W/O killing the POCO'ness too much?

• Rails Action and Fragment Caching during Development?

  I'm just starting to get into Rails caching and am wondering how to test whether or not caching is working in my development environment. I have set these two config variables for both the development (temporarily) and production environments: config.action_controller.perform_caching = true config.action_controller.page_cache_directory = File.join(RAILS_ROOT, 'public', 'cache') And my controller basically looks like this (using the resource_controller gem): class EventsController < Spree::BaseController resource_controller caches_page :index index.response do |format| format.html format.xml { render :xml => @collection.to_xml } end # ... end If I do that, I get these files: public/cache/events.html public/cache/events.xml But when I change caches_page to caches_action, I don't see any generated files and am not sure how to tell if the response has been cached. What do I need to know to know that this is working? I've read the docs and related, the rails caching guides, the railscast, and a few other docs, but I'm still wondering where everything is stored.   im designing a collection of video games for the command line (such as deal or no deal, tic tac toe, racing, maze puzzle, connect four, wack a mole, etc.) however it would really make things easier for me if i could make it so that when the user makes a selection (such as what direction to move in the game) , that as soon as they press the arrow keys then it carries out the IF statements that follow. • Passing sql results to views hard-codes views to database column names

  I just realized that i may not be following best practices in regards to the MVC pattern. My issue is that my views "know" information about my database Here's my situation in psuedo code... My controller invokes a method from my model and passes it directly to the view view.records = tableGateway.getRecords() view.display() in my view each records as record print record.name print record.address ... In my view i have record.name and record.address, info that's hard-coded to my database. Is this bad? What other ways around it are there other than iterating over everything in the controller and basically rewriting the records collection. And that just seems silly. Thanks

  Hi, I need to persist an object that is not marked with the serializable attribute. The object is from a 3rd party library which I cannot change. I need to store it in a persist place, like for example the file system, so the optimal solution would be to serialize the object to a file, but since it isn't marked as serializable, that is not a straight forward solution. It's a pretty complex object, which also holds a collection of other objects. Do you guys have any input on how to solve this? The code will never run in a production environment, so I'm ok with almost any solution and performance.

• What file format contents starts with "URES"?

  I have a number of files that contain data in a format I am not familiar with. All of the data files begin with the same byte sequence, presumably a file header, and the sequence is "URES". I'm assuming that these files are some kind of resource file, perhaps a collection of data or other files all embedded into one file; that's just a guess however. Does anyone know what format this is/might be? If so, how would I interrogate the file? Are there applications that let me open these kind of files? Do you know of any libraries or APIs that I can use to gain programmatic access the data?

• Checking for & storing multiple CheckBox selections in CSharp.

  I'm very new to CSharp and I can't seem to find a good solution to what I would consider a simple problem. Basically I'm trying to determine which CheckBoxs have been selected by the user and then randomly generate combinations of the selections the user has made. As new as I am, I am aware that you can use a simple statement such as: checkBox1.IsChecked == true I could have a long set of if statements which update an array/collection, but I'm told that in Csharp there is a way of determining which CheckBoxs are checked by querying the GroupBox that the CheckBoxs are in. Unless I'm mistaken (which is very possible) this is achieved by using Control features, unfortunately I've not come across these yet in my learning so if someone could clear things up that would be great. In summation, if someone has a simple solution for running through a set of checkBoxs and storing only the selected ones I would be most grateful.
