  • Using Microsoft's Chart Controls In An ASP.NET Application: Serializing Chart Data

    In most usage scenarios, the data displayed in a Microsoft Chart control comes from some dynamic source, such as from a database query. The appearance of the chart can be modified dynamically, as well; past installments in this article series showed how to programmatically customize the axes, labels, and other appearance-related settings. However, it is possible to statically define the chart's data and appearance strictly through the control's declarative markup. One of the demos examined in the Getting Started article rendered a column chart with seven columns whose labels and values were defined statically in the <asp:Series> tag's <Points> collection. Given this functionality, it should come as no surprise that the Microsoft Chart Controls also support serialization. Serialization is the process of persisting the state of a control or an object to some other medium, such as to disk. Deserialization is the inverse process, and involves taking the persisted data and recreating the control or object. With just a few lines of code you can persist the appearance settings, the data, or both to a file on disk or to any stream. Likewise, it takes just a few lines of codes to reconstitute a chart from the persisted information. This article shows how to use the Microsoft Chart Control's serialization functionality by examining a demo application that allows users to create custom charts, specifying the data to plot and some appearance-related settings.   • You do not need a separate SQL Server license for a Standby or Passive server - this Microsoft White Paper explains all

    If you were in any doubt at all that you need to license Standby / Passive Failover servers then the White Paper “Do Not Pay Too Much for Your Database Licensing” will settle those doubts. I’ve had debate before people thinking you can only have a single instance as a standby machine, that’s just wrong; it would mean you could have a scenario where you had a 2 node active/passive cluster with database mirroring and log shipping (a total of 4 SQL Server instances) – in that set up you only need to buy one physical license so long as the standby nodes have the same or less physical processors (cores are irrelevant). So next time your supplier suggests you need a license for your standby box tell them you don’t and educate them by pointing them to the white paper. For clarity I’ve copied the extract below from the White Paper. Extract from “Do Not Pay Too Much for Your Database Licensing” Standby Server Customers often implement standby server to make sure the application continues to function in case primary server fails. Standby server continuously receives updates from the primary server and will take over the role of primary server in case of failure in the primary server. Following are comparisons of how each vendor supports standby server licensing. SQL Server Customers does not need to license standby (or passive) server provided that the number of processors in the standby server is equal or less than those in the active server. Oracle DB Oracle requires customer to fully license both active and standby servers even though the standby server is essentially idle most of the time. IBM DB2 IBM licensing on standby server is quite complicated and is different for every editions of DB2. For Enterprise Edition, a minimum of 100 PVUs or 25 Authorized User is needed to license standby server.   The following graph compares prices based on a database application with two processors (dual-core) and 25 users with one standby server.   • Which web algorithms book to get ?

    This week Action Comics Superman #14 hits the stands and DC comics reveals the actual location of Kyrpton, delivered by none other than beloved astrophysicist Neil Tyson. Phil Plait at Bad Astronomy reports on the resolution of fans’ long standing curiosity about the location of Krypton: Well, that’s about to change. DC comics is releasing a new book this week – Action Comics Superman #14 – that finally reveals the answer to this stellar question. And they picked a special guest to reveal it: my old friend Neil Tyson. Actually, Neil did more than just appear in the comic: he was approached by DC to find a good star to fit the story. Red supergiants don’t work; they explode as supernovae when they are too young to have an advanced civilization rise on any orbiting planets. Red giants aren’t a great fit either; they can be old, but none is at the right distance to match the storyline. It would have to be a red dwarf: there are lots of them, they can be very old, and some are close enough to fit the plot. I won’t keep you in suspense: the star is LHS 2520, a red dwarf in the southern constellation of Corvus (at the center of the picture here). It’s an M3.5 dwarf, meaning it has about a quarter of the Sun’s mass, a third its diameter, roughly half the Sun’s temperature, and a luminosity of a mere 1% of our Sun’s.   • Ubuntu turns off instead of suspend / sleeping

    I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 on my notebook as the main OS. How ever, I've been facing a serious problem: Every time I try to suspend it, or it just stays idle for a while, the computer shuts down, instead of suspending. It actually seems to be suspended, but when I press the button the awake it, it turns on, the open works are all lost. How can i fix this? P.s: On windows 7 the suspend / sleep resumes just fine.   • Recommended workflows for Apache virtual hosts?

    I do a lot of local web development work on my Ubuntu machine, and I'm constantly setting up virtual hosts in Apache. I don't need to do hard core server management, but I am getting tired of the repetitive process of manually adding config directives to files in /etc/apache2/sites-available/ and then updating the /etc/hosts file. Is there a more efficient or more automated way to do all this that I'm missing? Maybe something like rapache but that's actually working?

  • Google Earth freezes during zoom-in on Intel processors with integrated graphics

    When I zoom in at a certain zoom level, Google Earth makes my system freeze completely so that I have to power off or reboot I use Kubuntu 12.04 and my laptop has an Intel(R)Core(TM)i3-2310M CPU @2.10GHz with HD3000 graphics. I installed intel-gpu-tools and tried to fix it with sudo intel_reg_write 0x2120 0x1206800 as explained [here][1], but that didn't work. I wonder if there any other solution out there...

  • No desktop icons after upgrade to 11.10

    I just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and after restart it showed the login screen. After login, only the desktop background shows with ubuntu 11.10 text at the bottom-left corner. Did my GNOME stop working ? My mouse pointer moves though, so its not a system crash.   • Is there a measure of code rot?

    I'm dealing, again, with a messy C++ application, tons of classes with confusing names, objects have pointers into each other and all over, longwinded Boost and STL data types, etc. (Pause and consider your favorite terror of messy legacy code. We probably have it.) The phrase "code rot" oft comes to mind when I work on this project. Is there a quantitative way to measure code rot? I wouldn't expect anything highly meaningful or scientific, since no other measure of code productivity or quality is so fine. I'm not looking for a mere opposite of measures of code quality, but specifically a measure of how many bad things happened after a series of maintenance software "engineers" have had turns hacking at the code. A general measure applying to any language, or many languages, would be great. If there's no such thing, at least for C++, which is a better than average language for creating messes. Maybe something involving a measure of topology of how objects connect during runtime, a count of chunks of commented out code, how mane files a typical variable's usage is scattered over, I don't know... but surely now, a decade into the 21st Century, someone has attempted to define some sort of rot measure. It would be especially interesting to automate a series of svn checkouts, measure the "rottenosity" of each, and plot the decay over time.

After spending a lot of time searching for this, I thought that some SuperUser gurus might know the answer :) I'm searching for an open source application to compute an FFT, that could: * Import a list of points from a text file (in any format, I could write conversion scripts if needed), for example 0,1; 1,2; 4,5 * Compute the associated discrete transform, and output the list of coefficients Ideally, it would also display the plot and the associated fourier decomposition on the same graph, to allow comparison, but this is not absolutely needed. It can be either on Windows or on Linux/Unix. Can you think of a solution? Thanks, CFP.
