• IIS will not install on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

  I have a new PC running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I have an issue installing IIS - it goes through the install process, but at the end tells me "not all components could be installed", with no additional information given. There is no sign of an error in the install log or in event viewer. However, at this point, IIS is installed and working! I can run IIS manager, browse to localhost and see the default page, but at the next reboot the system rolls back and th einstall vanishes. I have tried installing II using the Windows Components section in Add/Remove Programs, I have also tried the Web Platform Installer and using the command line, all with the same end result.

• Missing partition on a single HDD

  Hi all, I reinstalled Windows XP over a windows 7 Ultimate. I have a SATA HDD (320go) and now that I installed Windows XP pro, I only see a C:\ drive with 130go. So basically, my 2 other partitions are gone... where?!?! In my computer I only see the C:\ drive. In Computer Management, I only see Disk0 as my C:\ drive. 130go still. Is there an apps that can recover my 2 "lost" partitions or I would need to perform something else? Thanks! David.

Here are the differences: Laptop #1: 4GB Ram, Intel Core i5 2450M 2nd Gen processor w/ 2.5 Ghz clockspeed NVIDIA GeForce GT 520MX DDR3 1 GB Dedicated Graphics 750 GB SATA II Hard disk USB 2.0 Ports 6 hrs battery life Laptop #2: 4 GB Ram, Intel Core i5 3210M 3rd Gen processor w/ 2.5 Ghz clockspeed Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 500 GB SATA Hard disk USB 3.0 Ports 3 hrs battery life (This concerns me) First and foremost, does dedicated graphics matter for a casual gamer like me? Secondly, does the generation of the processors make a difference despite the same clockspeed. Thirdly, do usb 3.0 ports make a difference? And lastly, which laptop is more future proof? • PC reboots automatically in the begining

  I have a AMD Phenom II 3GHz. 2 GB RAM system running on Windows 7. Off late my PC does not start properly I have to start it at least 7-8 times before it starts. It starts and then shuts down. Every time the time for which the system is up increases. After 7-8 attempts it starts an works fine. I have to give it a min between restarts (USB mouse light goes off). If I try restarting before this time the PC does not start. I am suspecting humidity playing some factor as this issue has started creeping up ever since the rains have started.

• ASUS P6X58D and 12 GB of RAM

  I just assembled my new PC and it screams, BUT it's only recognizing 8 GB of RAM in BIOS and OS rather than the installed 12 GB. In the BIOS the RAM was registering at 1066 MHz so I set it to 1600 MHz. I have both XP and vista drivers on separate disks as provided with my motherboard but don't have drivers for win-7, so can I use my vista driver for win-7?

• How do I disable other monitors while running games in Wine?

  My current setup is: * Dual GTS 250 video cards * 3 Monitors * Used nvidia-settings to run each monitor as a separate x session * This is all running on Linux Mint Debian Edition When running games (Starcraft II) in Wine via PlayOnLinux, I've found that the mouse does not get locked. I already tried various solutions littered across the web and none work so I'd rather just disable my other two monitors while playing. Does anyone know of a method where I can turn off my other two monitors (not my primary monitor) while running Wine and then turn then back on afterwards? I don't mind having to manually run a script before and after gaming. Thanks.

• Computer won't recognize second WD internal HD

  I installed a Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB internal hard drive, and want to use it for back up. My BIOS recognizes the device, but it is not recognized in Disk Management. It also is not recognized in "my computer." When I right-click my C drivepropertieshardware, I see it listed. First the drive was plugged into SATA port 1 on my motherboard, then I tried it in port 3, where it remains. I've been working on this for hours. Any help would be appreciated. • How to set up RAID 1 on Dell PERC S300 With Existing OS Install

  We have a server that is being used in production, but it was not originally meant to. The main thing I want to add to it is a Dell PERC S300 RAID Card to have the main hard drive (Windows Server 2008 R2) mirrored on another hard drive. I can not initialize the disk and wipe the the OS to create the array and then re-install. Is there a way to create the array with a current hard drive, without affecting it, and just mirroring the drive? If that card is not an option, is there a card that would allow that? The server is a Dell PowerEdge T110 II.

• Enabling Surround sound on a Realtek ALC892 via SPDIF, on Windows 7

  I have a problem with my ALC892, on an ASRock mainboard (ASRock 890FX Deluxe4). I get only stereo sounds if I use SPDIF connection, in general. My amp shows that is getting surround sound only when I use the Test feature of Windows 7. This test feature allows to know which formats are supported by the audio chip. The tests render correctly both Dolby Digital and DTS. You can find this test under Sounds, Playback Devices, Select Digital Audio, then "Properties". I am using Windows 7 x64, with the latest drivers from the official Realtek website. I also tested other driver versions, both from the Realtek website and from the ASRock one, but had no luck. • Netscreen-Remote Equivalent On Linux

  We're running a simple Juniper VPN tunnel (using Juniper SSG5's) for outside-network access, which works great for Windows PCs since they can connect using the supplied Netscreen-Remote VPN client. Has anyone successfully managed to get this working under Linux? There are several alternatives, but none seem to actually work. • Hyper-V core NIC speeds and registry changes

  Good afternoon, On a Dell PE T610 I have Hyper-V core running, with 2 x Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE installed. I have noticed that copying large files 17GB for example, from a network physical server to the Hyper-V host local drive [not vm guest] is very slow in comparison to copying from Physical to Physical servers. Copying a 17GB file physical to Hyper-V host takes 30 minutes Copying a 17GB file physical to physical host takes 15 minutes Can someone tell me exactly what registry nodes I should disable on Hyper-V NICs to improve performance. So far I have gone to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4 D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and set the following to 0 on both physical NICs: *LSOv1IPv4 *LSOv2IPv6 *TCPUDPChecksumOffloadIPv4 *TCPUDPChecksumOffloadIPv6 Should I also disable *TCPConnectionOffloadIPv4 & *TCPConnectionOffloadIPv6? • VMware Workstation 7.x error loading operating system help

  Hey all i am using the windows verison of VMware Workstation 7.x and I am getting this error when i start my VM error loading operating system That only started to happen when i tried to load that vmdk file into the program VirtualBox. Prior to this it ran just fine. Ever since then i have been unable to start it in VMware Workstation 7.x... I've already tried to repair the vmdk file but when i do it tells me there are no errors found? I used vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -R "c:\blah\my vm disk.vmdk" Anyone else have any more suggestions i could try? It's a 300+GB VM so i really don't want to lose it!!! Thanks, David

  I've constructed a server that uses 2 Xeon E5-2620 CPUs and per Intel's recommendation I'm in the process of ordering heatsinks for each and I'm slightly concerned about thermal management. The case I'm using is well ventilated (the Coolermaster Cosmos II) but I have a few concerns regarding the adequacy of the heatsinks recommended by the MB manufacturer (Supermicro CPU HeatSink SNK-P0048PS). As you can see these heatsinks come without a fan and I'm wondering if they can keep the Xeons within their normal temperature range... Due to the low volume of literature on the topic I wasn't able to find anything conclusive.

  I've heard that NTFS compression can reduce performance due to extra CPU usage, but I've read reports that it may actually increase performance because of reduced disk reads. How exactly does NTFS compression affect system performance? Notes: I'm running a laptop with a 5400 RPM hard drive, and many of the things I do on it are I/O bound. The processor is a AMD Phenom II with four cores running at 2.0 GHz. The system is defragmented regularly using UltraDefrag. The workload is mixed read-write, with reads occurring somewhat more often than writes. The files to be compressed include personal documents and selected programs, including several (less demanding) games and Visual Studio (which tends to be I/O bound more often than not).

• DYNDNS setup with TightVNC on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Hey all, i seem to be having a problem with getting ports to forward on my Windows Server 2008 R2 PC. I already set all my port forwarding for 5900/5800 on my router for my PC's IP address (192.168.1.22) but when i try to use the TightVNC PFPortChecker on port 5900 it tells me its not opened! I can not even connect to my DYNDNS server name (xxxxxxx.dyndns.org). As a side note, i am running Windows XP SP3 within a VirtaulBox inside Windows Server 2008 R2 but running the PFPortChecker in Windows 2008 R2 brings the same results as it does in the VM. I also added them to the Windows Firewall Advanced Security form to add those inbound ports for full access. What could i possibly be missing? Thanks for your time! David

  I am running a FOXCONN AM2+ M61PMV with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. From startup I have hit the del key and the options for enabling the hardware virtualization are not there. I have checked the Microsoft tool that says I can run virtual and i have checked SecurAble, that says yes. But I have an open case w/microsoft (they've been trying for a week [7 tech support people later]) and they're saying that I need to ensure that the hardware is enabled. Where do I go to see? Is there another way besides from the startup?

  I have a small website where some content is displayed within a HTML tag using AJAX. The content is simply taken from another page on the same web site. However, sometimes instead of loading the parsed PHP file, the browser displays a download box instead. I downloaded the file and this is what it looks like a text file mixed with binary or gzipped data. • Do superuser's prefer business grade or consumer grade PCs?

  Having burned through a number of consumer grade laptops in recent years, I'm wondering if the additional cost of a business grade computer is a worth while investment. I'm considering getting a laptop with slightly lower specs to justify the added cost. The primary benefits I see are: (i) the notebook will be more reliable, (ii) have a longer life and (iii) the warranty (parts and labor) will be 3 years instead of 1 year. Are there any other considerations one should keep in mind when shopping for a business grade PC? Is purchasing direct from the manufacturer wise or are there other options that should be considered too? Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone One of my system is really old, but I still use it, right now, the HDD is and old IDE drive that is starting to fail (I got to many damaged sectors) and I'm planing to replace it. The motherboard supports Serial ATA 1 and I have a real nice offer on a SATA 2 drive, can I use that drive on a SATA 1 interface (obviously with reduced speed) just like a USB 2.0 device on a 1.0 port? • Win 2008 single server development environment (architecture)

  I have a few questions about a test development environment that I’m setting up on this server: Intel Core i7-920 Quadcode incl. Hyper Threading 8 GB DDR3 RAM 2x 750 GB SATA-II (probably software RAID 1) The server is going to support max 5 users, maybe 10 when stressed. I was hoping that I could run all the following products on the same server: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 w/ IIS SQL Server 2008 x64 (R2 when released) Team Foundation Server 2010 Sharepoint Foundation 2010 I know this sounds overkill, but remember that this is for development purpose and testing. This is not a production environment. My question if this will be possible at all? Should I run it all on one Windows 2008 installation, or should I run it in multiple virtual environments using Hyper-V? What do you think?

• Windows server 2008 R2 IIS7 file permissions

  Hey all i am trying to figure out why i can not access a index.php file from within the wwwroot/mollify/backend directory. It keeps coming up with this: Server Error 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. I've given all the permissions (Full control) to the wwwroot directory i could think of (IUSR, Guest, GUESTS, IIS_IUSRS, Users, Administrators, NETWORK, NETWORK SERVICE, SYSTEM, CREATOR OWNER & Everyone). I also added index.php to the "Default Document" under my website settings in IIS 7 manager. What else am i missing? Thanks! David
