Algorithms for modern hardware?

Once again, I find myself with a set of broken assumptions. The article itself is about a 10x performance gain by modifying a proven-optimal algorithm to account for virtual memory: What good is an O(log2(n)) algorithm if those operations cause page faults and slow disk operations? For most relevant datasets an O(n) or even an O(n^2) algorithm, which avoids page faults, will run circles around it. Are there more such algorithms around? Should we re-examine all those fundamental building blocks of our education? What else do I need to watch out for when writing my own?

Why people do not like OOP? [closed]

I do not understand why people choose C++ over Smalltalk in past and why Java over Python or Ruby. What is it that ties people so much to the procedural programming and makes it so difficult to go "all the way" to object oriented programming? What makes OOP hard? Should not objects be an abstraction which is easier to grasp for people, i.e. a more natural one than procedures? Is education the problem (because people tend to learn procedural programming before object oriented)?

How should an error during resource deallocation be handled, when the object representing the resource is contained in a shared pointer? Smart pointers are a useful tool to manage resources safely. Examples of such resources are memory, disk files, database connections, or network connections. // open a connection to the local HTTP port boost::shared_ptr<Socket> socket = Socket::connect("localhost:80"); In a typical scenario, the class encapsulating the resource should be noncopyable and polymorphic. A good way to support this is to provide a factory method returning a shared pointer, and declare all constructors non-public. The shared pointers can now be copied from and assigned to freely. The object is automatically destroyed when no reference to it remains, and the destructor then releases the resource. /** A TCP/IP connection. */ class Socket { public: static boost::shared_ptr<Socket> connect(const std::string& address); virtual ~Socket(); protected: Socket(const std::string& address); private: // not implemented Socket(const Socket&); Socket& operator=(const Socket&); }; But there is a problem with this approach. The destructor must not throw, so a failure to release the resource will remain undetected. A common way out of this problem is to add a public method to release the resource. class Socket { public: virtual void close(); // may throw // ... }; Unfortunately, this approach introduces another problem: Our objects may now contain resources which have already been released. This complicates the implementation of the resource class. Even worse, it makes it possible for clients of the class to use it incorrectly. The following example may seem far-fetched, but it is a common pitfall in multi-threaded code. socket->close(); // ... size_t nread = socket->read(&buffer[0], buffer.size()); // wrong use! Either we ensure that the resource is not released before the object is destroyed, thereby losing any way to deal with a failed resource deallocation. Or we provide a way to release the resource explicitly during the object's lifetime, thereby making it possible to use the resource class incorrectly. There is a way out of this dilemma. But the solution involves using a modified shared pointer class. These modifications are likely to be controversial. Typical shared pointer implementations, such as boost::shared_ptr, require that no exception be thrown when their object's destructor is called. Generally, no destructor should ever throw, so this is a reasonable requirement. These implementations also allow a custom deleter function to be specified, which is called in lieu of the destructor when no reference to the object remains. The no-throw requirement is extended to this custom deleter function. The rationale for this requirement is clear: The shared pointer's destructor must not throw. If the deleter function does not throw, nor will the shared pointer's destructor. However, the same holds for other member functions of the shared pointer which lead to resource deallocation, e.g. reset(): If resource deallocation fails, no exception can be thrown. The solution proposed here is to allow custom deleter functions to throw. This means that the modified shared pointer's destructor must catch exceptions thrown by the deleter function. On the other hand, member functions other than the destructor, e.g. reset(), shall not catch exceptions of the deleter function (and their implementation becomes somewhat more complicated). Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s. Sorry for the stupid title.

Fulltext and composite indexes and how they affect the query

Just say I had a query as below.. SELECT name,category,address,city,state FROM table WHERE MATCH(name,subcategory,category,tag1) AGAINST('education') AND city='Oakland' AND state='CA' LIMIT 0, 10; ..and I had a fulltext index as name,subcategory,category,tag1 and a composite index as city,state; is this good enough for this query? Just wondering if something extra is needed when mixing additional AND's when making use of the fulltext index with the MATCH/AGAINST. Edit: What I am trying to understand is, what happens with the additional columns that are within the query but are not indexed in the chosen index (the fulltext index), the above example being city and state. How does MySQL now find the matching rows for these since it can't use two indexes (or can it?) - so, basically, I'm trying to understand how MySQL goes about finding the data optimally for the columns NOT in the chosen fulltext index and if there is anything I can or should do to optimize the query.

Track someone's GitHub repo in a branch

I'm pretty new to Git, and like it a lot so far, but am not sure what do do here. I've forked a github project, and am currently in the process of porting it to another language. For reference, I've created a branch of the code as it was when I made the fork. My problem now is that the original project has been updated, and I can't figure out how to pull those changes into my branch from the original master (because 'origin' points to my github project). Follow-up question for my own education, what command will the owner of the original project have to run in order to pull a change in from my branch into his master branch?

MVC Forms Authentication with custom database

I'm trying to get forms authentication working for an mvc site. I have a custom database with a users table, and I would like to do my own password validation. I am logging in my user like this: if (PasswordHasher.Hash(password) == dataUser.Password) { FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(email, true); return true; } The problem is, when the session expires obviously the user has to login again. I am thinking I should be storing this Auth cookie in my users table? Update: I'm obviously in desperate need of more education in this area. I just noticed that the user stays authenticated even after an iisreset. I guess what I'm asking is how can I get persistent and non persistent authentication working properly. I want a user to not have to login again if they click "remember", and if they don't then their authentication should expire when the forms authentication is set to expire.

Boy did I get an education looking into this. I guess I've been spoiled by Powerbuilder, which has fantastic functionality for this out of the box. Does anyone seriously write custom documentpaginator objects to handle reporting needs for their LOB apps? I want to be able to print "for free" and not have to code like crazy just to take whats on the screen and throw it on paper. How are people doing this? Does anyone have a recommended 3rd party for allowing printing of largish datagrids? Thanks

I may have to create a firefox addon? I'm quite lost, I think... Interpreted languages: The higher-level the faster?

I have designed around 5 experimental languages and interpreters for them so far, for education, as a hobby and for fun. One thing I noticed: The assembly-like language featuring only subroutines and conditional jumps as structures was much slower than the high-level language featuring if, while and so on. I developed them both simultaneously and both were interpreted languages. I wrote the interpreters in C++ and I tried to optimize the code-execution part to be as fast as possible. My hypothesis: In almost all cases, performance of interpreted languages rises with their level (high/low). Am I basically right with this? (If not, why?)

Strings - Filling In Leading Zeros Wtih A Zero

I'm reading an array of hard-coded strings of numeric characters - all positions are filled with a character, even for the leading zeros. Thus, can confidently parse it using substring(start, end) to convert to numeric. Example: "0123 0456 0789" However, a string coming from a database does not fill in the leading zero with a 'zero character', it simply fetches the '123 456 789', which is correct for an arithmetic number but not for my needs and makes for parsing trouble. Before writing conditionals to check for leading zeros and adding them to the string if needed, is there a simple way of specifying they be filled with a character ? I'm not finding this in my Java book... I could have done the three conditionals in the time it took to post this but, this is more about 'education'... Thanks

This is what i have for my background: body { background-image:url('islandbeach.jpg'); background-repeat:repeat; background-position:center; background-attachment:fixed; background-size:cover; } Now, I want to make my background transparent or faded so I can see the text and the other image that I have. The background is too colorful to be able to see the words without having to squint. Are there any HTML codes that can do this for me? The recent wave of earthquakes (no pun intended) being reported in the news got me wondering about the frequency and severity of earthquakes around the world. Since I’ve been doing a lot of Silverlight development lately, I decided to scratch my curiosity with a nice little Bing Maps application that will show the location and relative strength of recent seismic activity. Here is a list of technologies this application will utilize, so be sure to have everything downloaded and installed if you plan on following along. Silverlight 3 WCF RIA Services Bing Maps Silverlight Control * Managed Extensibility Framework (optional) MVVM Light Toolkit (optional) log4net (optional) * If you are new to Bing Maps or have not signed up for a Developer Account, you will need to visit www.bingmapsportal.com to request a Bing Maps key for your application. Getting Started We start out by creating a new Silverlight Application called EarthquakeLocator and specify that we want to automatically create the Web Application Project with RIA Services enabled. I cleaned up the web app by removing the Default.aspx and EarthquakeLocatorTestPage.html. Then I renamed the EarthquakeLocatorTestPage.aspx to Default.aspx and set it as my start page. I also set the development server to use a specific port, as shown below. RIA Services Next, I created a Services folder in the EarthquakeLocator.Web project and added a new Domain Service Class called EarthquakeService.cs. This is the RIA Services Domain Service that will provide earthquake data for our client application. I am not using LINQ to SQL or Entity Framework, so I will use the <empty domain service class> option. This is an important distinction to point out because each scenario I just mentioned could potentially use a different Domain Service base class (i.e. LinqToSqlDomainService<TDataContext>). The reason being that it is the only public instance method and it returns an IQueryable<Earthquake> collection that can be consumed by the client application. GetEarthquakes() calls the static GetFeed(String) method, which utilizes the built in SyndicationFeed API to load the external data feed. You will need to add a reference to the System.ServiceModel.Web library in order to take advantage of the RSS/Atom reader. The API will also allow you to create your own feeds to serve up in your applications. Model I have also created a Model folder and added a new class, Earthquake.cs. The Earthquake object will hold the various properties returned from the Atom feed. Here is a sample of the code for that class. Another thing to notice is what’s going on in the default constructor. I chose to use the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF) for my composition needs, but you can use any dependency injection library or none at all. The MVVM Light Toolkit project templates come with a ViewModelLocator class that you can use via a static resource, but I am instantiating the EarthquakeViewModel directly in my user control. I am setting the AutoLoadData property to true as a way to trigger the LoadEarthquakes() method call.
