• EF Query using .Contains() and .ToLowerInvariant() Results in no matches when match is found at the end of a string

  Is it possible to step into a linq query? I have a linq to entity framework 4 query in it's simplest form: List = List.Where(f => f.Value.ToString().ToLowerInvariant().Contains(filter.ToLowerInvariant())); It's a query against an Entity Framework DbContext and I'm having trouble seeing why it works for something like: List searching for 001 yields no results against the following list Test001 Test002 Test003 Test004 However any other search yields results (Such as t00 or Test) Update Basically I'm looking for why a query such as the above wouldn't return a result when I'm using a contains and the value matches the end of a string vs just the middle or begining. It's really confusing. OK, it appears to have something to do with ToLowerInvariant() - when I removed that method it works just fine.

  I was wondering if you know of a way I could filter a mysql query to only show the ‘alpha’ characters from a specific field So something like SELECT col1, col2, **alpha_chars_only(col3)** FROM table I am not looking to update only select. I have been looking at some regex but without much luck most of what turned up was searching for fields that only contain ‘alpha’ chars. In a much watered down context... I have col1 which contains abc and col two contains abc123 and I want to match them on alpha chars only. There can be any number of letters or numbers. Any help very much wel come

• Resizing uploaded images based on a maximum width in django (PIL)

  I'm working on a simple message board app in Django that lets people upload images to be displayed in their posts. Since the div containing the posts is only 700px, I want to resize the uploaded images to a max width of something like 680px to save space rather than using css to display an image that's too large within the space constraints. I've been searching this site, google and the PIL docs for a while and haven't found any way of resizing an image on one dimension while maintaining the original aspect ratio. Given my inexperience, it's possible that I'm just not recognizing a solution that's plain to someone who knows what to look for.

  I'm searching for some code samples for my Flash application. The app is based on screen-flows , i.e each screen is defined with some visual elements with some buttons which have async events associated with them(consuming web services basically). The buttons also have functionality to go back and forth between screens and jump to any screen. I want to define all of the visual elements and the functionality of the events in a XML file. Thus the model, view and controller are all in the XML. Does any framework allow this like Pure MVC? Where can I find some examples of this kind of functionality that I want?

• Set up CakePHP in a subdirectory; Wordpress is installed in the root

  I have been searching for a solution for 2 hours but nothing seems to work... here is my problem: I have WordPress installed in the root (var/www). So by going to http://www.geekderek.com, I see my wordpress site. I put CakePHP in a subdirectory var/www/cakephp. I want to be able to see my CakePHP app by going to: www.geekderek.com/cakephp. However, currently this url just returns a Wordpress page saying "Content not found." I believe this problem can be solved by modifying .htaccess in my root directory. So here is my .htaccess: http://pastebin.com/sXJTRstB As you can see, I added this line to the default WP .htaccess file: RewriteRule ^cakephp(/(.*))?$ cakephp/app/webroot/$1 [QSA,L] However, for some reason this doesn't seem to work. • Start a thread using a method pointer

  Hi ! I'm trying to develop a thread abstraction (POSIX thread and thread from the Windows API), and I would very much like it to be able to start them with a method pointer, and not a function pointer. What I would like to do is an abstraction of thread being a class with a pure virtual method "runThread", which would be implanted in the future threaded class. I don't know yet about the Windows thread, but to start a POSIX thread, you need a function pointer, and not a method pointer. And I can't manage to find a way to associate a method with an instance so it could work as a function. I probably just can't find the keywords (and I've been searching a lot), I think it's pretty much what Boost::Bind() does, so it must exist. Can you help me ?

  Hi I have an asp:bulletedlist control, which sits inside a div tag, and I need to count the number of list items inside the control. Searching the internet, and noting the fact the html given back by the items is a list i.e. <li>, I thought I could use an example of: var listcontrol = document.getElementById('BulletedList1'); var countItems = listcontrol.getElementByTagName('li').length; However, when I do this, it throws and error saying that no object exists for this control. So, my problem is, and because I must do this clientside because I want to use this to set the height of the div tag, is how do you count the number of items inside a asp:bulletedlist control with javascript?

• How do I compare vectors in C++?

  I am trying to compare two vector objects, and return a single vector containing all the chars which appear in both vectors. How would I go about this without writing some horribly complex manual method which compares every char in the first vector to every char in the second vector and using an if to add it to a third vector (which would be returned) if they match. Maybe my lack of real experience with vectors is making me imagine this will be harder than it really is, but I suspect there is some simplier way which I have been unable to find through searching.

  Im creating application that will display remote page on the UIWebView using local images and javascript/css files for faster loading. I want to avoid using cache because for this to work it must first load all the content. I was searching online for possible solution.   I am searching one student from each class from one group. There are different class groups and every group has different classes and every class has multiple students. See below: Group1 --> Class1, Class2 etc Class1 --> GreenStudent1, GreenStudent2 etc Class2 --> RedStudent1, RedStudent2 etc ------------------------------------------------------ SELECT table1.id, table1.myname, table1.marks table2.studentid, table2.studentname FROM table1 INNER JOIN table3 ON table1.oldid = table3.id INNER JOIN table2 ON table2.studentid = table3.newid WHERE table1.classgroup = 'SCI79' GROUP BY table1.oldid ORDER BY table1.marks DESC There are different joins applied in the query. Above mentioned query giving me correct results but I need little modification in it. Current query returning me one student from each class. What I need? I need one student from each class but only that student who has MAXIMUM table1.marks So I should have one student from each class who has maximum number in their relevant classes. Can anyone suggest some solution or rewrite this query? Thanks :)

  Hi all Due to certain compliance requirements, we have to encrypt the user DOB field in the database. We also have another requirement to be able to search a user by his age. Our DB doesn't support transparent encryption so encryption will handled by the application. Any good ideas on how to allow for searching by age? One thought is to save the YOB in a separate column in cleartext and still be able to comply to our compliance requirement. Aside from that, any other design strategy that would help? • Strange problem installing a setup that I have just created.

  Hello, I have both VS 2005 and 2008 installed. Just today I created a setup project in 2005 and I got this error when I tried to installed it. "The folder path 'http://sharingcentre.info' contains an invalid character." So I decided to create a simple project and added a new setup in 2005 and got the same problem. I then converted the project to 2008 and added another new setup. The same problem happened again. However, a previous setup project I created before work ok. I can install my application. Its only from today I cannot install any of my new setup projects. Using either 2005 and 2008. Has anyone else had this same problem. Searching google doesn't give me any real responses, I give the error message is too vague. many thanks for any suggestions,

  How can i use regular expressions with linq to sql in the asp.net mvc(C#) application? The columns in my MSSQL table (Products) has some special characters like (, - % ',.....). While searching for a product i need to search without that special chareters. For ex.: I have a product say (ABC-Camp's / One), when i search for "abccamp", it should pull the product.   class Person{ @Persistent private List tags = ArrayList() } I want to let the user query a person based on his/her tag, so I had my query filter like this: tags.contains(tagValue1) and if the user want to search for multiple tags, I would just add to the filter so if the user is searching for 3 tags, then the query would be tags.contains(tagValue1) && tags.contains(tagValue2) && tags.contains(tagValue3) I think this approach is wrong, because the datastore then needs to have an index that have the tags property three times... and if the user search for more than 3 tags at a time then it will be broken. What's the proper way to do this? Do you guys have any suggestions?

• Is there an ORM that allows a "plugin" to extend the database?

  So, I've been searching for the answer to this, but I can't find anything I have an Entity Framework Model (MyModel1) - for now, we'll say this contains a "Users" table It's part of a big app, that has a references to an "Addresses" project The addresses project contains an Entity Framework Model (MyModel2), this contains a Users table, and an Addresses table (pointing to the same database. The main app has a control that edits the user, and in that control it has an "addresses" control which actually exists in the "Addresses" project. To make this work, the User control passes the User object down to the addresses control, however, as the User that's been passed belongs to MyModel1 and not MyModel2, another User object has to be loaded up, then it can be used. This isn't ideal as I've had to load up the User twice. Is there a way of say, MyModel2 extending MyModel1, which effectively just adds a relationship to "User". Or is there an ORM that would handle this better? Or even a design pattern that would handle this better?

  Our team has recently been working on a logic and data layer for our database. We were not approved to utilize Entity or Linq to SQL for the data layer. It was primarily built by hand. A lot of the SQL is auto generated. An obvious down fall of this is the need to sanitize inputs prior to retrieval and insertion. What are the best methods for doing this? Searching for terms like insert, delete, etc seems like a poor way to accomplish this. Is there a better alternative?

  I have a problem. I have made some image files for a menu. They work fine in Firefox, but IE (8, haven't tested with others) and Chrome show a broken image.. Image, on top. I have tried searching google and stackoverflow, but have not so far been able to find anyone else having this problem or what is causing it. Can anyone help?   I'm working on a test page and am using MySQLi prepared statements in my queries after reading they make my code safe from SQL injection. I have been successful with prepared statements so far with retrieving data from my DB, that all works great. What I want to do now is count the number of galleries within a project using SELECT COUNT(*). That's it. Without using a prepared statement, my old query looked like this: // count number of galleries per project $conn = dbConnect('query'); $galNumb = "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM pj_galleries WHERE project = {$pjInfo['pj_id']}"; $gNumb = $conn->query($galNumb); $row = $gNumb->fetch_row(); $galTotal = $row[0]; But for all my reading and searching the internet, I can not find out the proper way to write this as a prepared statement. I'm no PHP whiz here, and not coding daily isn't helping my skills. If I've missed anything please ask. Many thanks!
