• Jail user to home directory while still allowing permission to create and delete files/folders

  I'm trying to give a client SFTP access to the root directory of their site on my server (Ubuntu 10.10) so they can manager their website themselves. While I have been successful in jailing a user to a directory and giving them SFTP access; they are only allowed to create and delete new files in sub directories (the directories they own). This means that I must give them access to the parent directory to the root of their site. How can I limit them to the root of their site (for example public_html) while still allowing them the ability create and delete files. All the tutorials I have read suggest that the root must be the owner of the user's home directory, which prevents them from write access inside that directory. I'm relatively new to managing my own server so any advice would be very grateful. Many thanks.

• Do TCP/UDP connections add to the Windows incoming connection limit?

  Hi all, I've tried to figure out what Microsoft means by "Windows sockets" and it all seems very vague. Basically we have customers that sometimes try to set up workgroups with close to 10 Windows XP computers with drive and printer shares and we're worried that some of the non-Windows Ethernet devices on the network will cause issues with the inbound connection limit outlined here where only 10 inbound connections can be active at one time. For example, there is an Ethernet Caller ID device that broadcasts UDP packets to all computers, and a kitchen display system that likewise broadcasts UDP. They may also have incoming TCP packets for our custom online ordering module. Do these TCP/UDP connections count toward the inbound connection limit? I'm aware that Windows 7 has increased the limit to 20 but we might have future customers that will push that limit. Thanks in advance

Googling isn't helping, I get that it's something with VM, but why is it suddenly showing up in /var/log/messages? Edit: I take it it's showing this because the number of pages it could free ("nr") is negative. Which is presumably a bad thing. I found patches for newer kernels that display a more useful message to this effect. Still not sure what this means though, or what I need to do about it.

  I am trying to setup a loadBalancer on AWS. The A-Record it gave me looks like myLoadBalancer-**********.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com however when i try to put that in my domain registrars A-Record, i get an errorIP address is not valid. Must be of type x.x.x.x where x is 0-255. amazons solution is you should create a CNAME record for the LoadBalancer DNS name, or use Amazon Route 53 to create a hosted zone. route 53 gives me DNS numbers but if i use that then my email doesnt work from the registrar. question: is there a way to use route 53 and retain my emails? or should i create a CNAME record for the LoadBalancer DNS name, if so how do i do this ... not sure what this means?

• Logins with only HTTP - are they as insecure as I'm thinking?

  Recently I was thinking about how websites like gmail and amazon use HTTPS during the login process when accessing your account. This makes sense, obviously, since you're typing in your account username and password and you would want that to be secure. However, on Facebook, among countless other websites, their logins are done with simple HTTP. Doesn't that mean that my login name and password are completely unencrypted? Which, even worse, means that all those people who login to their facebooks (or similar sites) at a wifi hotspot in public are susceptible to anyone getting their credentials using a simple packet sniffer (or something similar)? Is it really that easy? Or am I misunderstanding internet security? I'm a software engineer working on some web related stuff, and although at the current time I'm not too involved with the security aspect of our software, I knew I should probably know the answer to this question, since it's extremely fundamental to website security. • Cannot delete folder - Content seems to be nested recursively

  I cannot delete a folder located on my hard disk by any means. I don't quite know how it was created, all I know is, that it is a pretty deep structure of folders (too deep to delete it at once, since Windows restriction path name too long), but the problem in the end is, that I can't "pull out" the inner folders, because they don't seem to be folders anymore (Context menu lacks things like "Properties", "Cut", "Copy", "Delete" etc.) Here a picture of how a right click looks like on one of these "folders": As you can see, the current folder is in very deep, but that is not the problem, rather the one I left-clicked on. Has anyone any advice on how to get rid of these? I tried a chkdsk, said no errors. I also tried deleting those folder via a VMWare Ubuntu, to no success. I also tried a batch file from a volunteer at MS boards, that should automatically de-nest such folders, but I guess mine is a special case, since the tool only created more such folders.

  I'm a little confused about iTune's ability to set eq presets on a per-song basis. I have a song that I open, set to a given EQ preset, then close. When I play this song, however, the audio isn't being adjusted. If I open the EQ and turn it 'on', though, it then obeys the song's eq setting. Of course, if I leave the EQ on, then songs that do not have their own EQ setting default to whatever the EQ was originally set at. Not a HUGE deal, but it means that I would then normally have to have EQ always turned on, set to flat, so that any song that I HAVE given a EQ setting to will use it. Am I understanding how that works correctly? Is there a way to have individual songs use their EQ setting without having to turn on the EQ for everything?

• How do I restore a SQL Server database from last night's full backup and the active transaction log file?

  I have been told that it's good practise to keep your SQL Server data files and log files on physically separate disks, because it'll allow you to recover your data to the point of failure if the data drive fails. So... let's say that mydata.mdf is on drive D:, and my mydata_log.ldf is on drive E:, and it's 16:45, and drive D: has just died horribly. So - I have last night's full backup (mydata.bak). I have hourly transaction-log backups that will bring the data back up to 16:00... but that means I'll lose 45 minutes worth of updates. I still have mydata_log.ldf on the E: drive, which should contain EVERY transaction that was committed right up to the point where the drive failed. How do I go about recreating the database and restoring data from the backup file and the live transaction log, so I don't lose any updates? Is this possible?

• How to make sure clients update their browser cache when my website is updated?

  I am using the HTTP 1.1 Cache-Control header to implement client-side caching. Since I update my website only once a month I would like the CSS and JS files to be cached for 30 days with Cache-Control: max-age=2592000. The problem is that the 30-day period defined by Cache-Control doesn't coincide with the website update cycle, it starts from the moment the users visit the site and ends 30 days later, which means an update could occur in the meantime and users would be running with outdated content for a while, which could break the rendering of the website if for instance the HTML and CSS no longer match. How can I perform client-side caching of content for periods of several days but somehow get users to refresh their CSS/JS files after the website has been updated? One solution I could think of is that if website updates can be schedule, the max-age returned by the server could be decreased every day accordingly so that no matter when people visit the website, the end of caching period would coincide with the update of the website, but changing the server configuration every day goes against one of my sysadmin principles (once it's running, don't touch it).

  Hi I am using XAMPP on Windows XP. Since I changed the version from 1.73 to 1.77 MySQL does not start properly. That means that the status says, it is started, but the safety check says it is not . Because of that I cannot set any password, which is unacceptable. Any idea? • Cannot send email from EC2 instance on port 587

  I have written a mail service for our flask application that uses Celery and RabbitMQ to send emails (using gmail). I have got the celery consumer and producer communicating okay but I cannot get to send send emails. I am getting a socket.error: [Errno 101] Network is unreachable. I think this means that AWS is blocking port 587 - even though in my security group I opened both ports 587 and 25 (inbound and outbound). Any reason why this is happening? Any help will be highly appreciated.

  Hi I am setting up a master image to clone to all same machine type Windows 7 client, I login as administrastor and installed all the programs and changed the desktop settings etc, but my local administrator profile is 244megs in size, which will become the default profile of the local machine when sysprep, we have a 2003 server that I want to use mandatory profile for all login users which means I need to copy this profile to the server so when any users login to the domain they are using this profile, loading a 244megs profile is going to be very slow since it will be removed from the client when they logoff. So next time they login it will take a long time again. Is there anything I can do, can I just copy just the bare minimum files from the default profile to the server, as I am not sure what parts I need, I read that I must copy my documents, my documents/pictures so the folder redirection will work. What else do I need to copy to the server? I have firefox xmark sync also and MS words etc. THanks

• Pull/push student assignment files from computer lab computers (Windows 7)

  I have a computer lab with about 35 PC's all running Windows 7. The students do their work and save it on the D-drive in a particular folder such as a folder with the same name as the computer's name (e.g. LABPC001). I'd like a centralized way to pull all these folders in to the teacher's computer in the lab to check the assignments. It would be best if this didn't involve using an external website (e.g. Dropbox). I would also like to be able to distribute (send) files to the students in these same folders. I've seen software applications that do this but they cost about US$1000 which is far beyond our means. Suggestions for free, or almost free, best ways to set this up?

• (Possibly) Corrupted DDCrypt self-decrypting file

  I recently discovered some files I had encrypted and archived on a CD using DDCrypt 2.0, which is a small encryption utility from back in the day. One of its functions is to create self-decrypting files, which are essentially EXE files that you can enter a password and then have the file extracted onto your filesystem. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get them to do this properly. They appear to be decrypting and then at the last moment I get the error: Error opening encrypted file C:\users\username\Temp\dde3cfa.tmp Reason: Success and then another dialog immediately says Error extracting ddc file. I'm not really sure what this means (certainly not success), but I've checked out the temporary file and it appears to be garbage data (although of the right file size). I don't know if anyone has an idea what might be done here to extract the files, or has dealt with a similar situation before. Any ideas are appreciated!   apache dont send me mp3 header even when use direct address to the file, it means i can play it with flash audio players on my web pages, but when i tried to download from direct address on my server i got "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset" or sometimes gives me a file with mp3 extension that has just 13B files-size, and when i open that file in gedit/notepad there is just: <html></html> i dont have any problem with php files and images, but mp3 files never be send to browser for download or play. i added this code to httpd.conf: AddType audio/mpeg .mp3 but there is not any difference!! thanks in advance

  The cache module of nginx version 1.1.19 does not take the Vary header into account. This means that nginx will serve the same request even if the content of one of the fields specified in the Vary header has changed. In my case I only care about the Accept-Language header, all the others have been taken care of. How can I make nginx cache everything except responses that have a Vary header that contains Accept-Language? • Making Windows 7 default to "All Files" when opening a document?

  I'm taking over an old coworkers job and part of that means I'll be working on various IFS tickets without any real ERP experience. I'm working with one user who is trying to check in documents in IFS. Right now, IFS defaults to JPEGs and then she has to select "All Files" in order find PDFs. Example: http://i.imgur.com/xK0iAfF.png As much as I'd like to say "it's one extra step, come on" the user's manager has insisted it interrupts her workflow and asked us to get on it. I've spoken with our IFS experts and they're unaware of any setting that would make the open dialog default to All Files in IFS. I've searched in Google for any setting in Windows 7 that would do that - but those have been unsuccessful - I keep getting results about changing which program opens a specific file type.

  Is there any way to configure a computer to login automatically at bootup and then IMMEDIATELY switch users? The purpose is to trigger the profile loading process for the assumed user so that when they go to login, their profile loads instantaneously. Yet, the immediate user switch means that the login password is still required before any actual use. A few of the attempts I have made require storing the password in plain-text for the system to use. Needless to say that is undesireable. I have been looking for this solution for years; if anyone knows of a better solution to skinning this cat I am all ears. EDIT: tsdiscon command will Lock the workstation.

• Cloning Fresh Windows 7 with external HDD, DVD or CDs?

  I want to create Windows installation disk (not necessarily CD) from my Windows 7 Pro laptop, not sure what it actually means here. The material is about 50-60GB, requiring about 12 pcs of 5GB disk (not going to happen, too much work to use them later). I have the Windows serial on the laptop bottom and this is so-called firm -laptop (no idea what it actually mean, better warranty and some instant support thing apparently). Now how to do the clone with external material such as DVDs? how can I create mock-windows-installation medium or some real windows-installation medium? I am now not sure whether Windows offers W7 -installations medium online, well my W -peer mentioned some MSDAA -something. • How do I get these permissions working right so Apache can work with the files?

  I am having a go at setting up my own Apache and can't seem to get my head around the permissions. Lets say I grab a file from somewhere off the web and it has permission of 600. I then upload this file via ftp to a user directory, which is also an apache virtual site, and so this file retains this permission of 600. This means that the user can read this file, but Apache can't: it will be forbidden. What is the most simple solution so that apache can read + write whatever files end up in the users directory? Can apache be granted some sort of root power over files in a directory?

• connected ethernet without disabling wireless, now I have *two* LAN ip's?

  Ok I'm on ubuntu 11.04, not too knowledgeable about network stuff. Usually people ask things like "wired works but wireless does not!". In m y case, I'm just curious about what it means to have both of them seemingly connected. In 'ipconfig' in shell I see that I have 192.168.1.2 for the wireless AND 192.168.1.3 for the ethernet. What does this mean for applications, does one of the two get precedence? It seems like my pages load slightly faster, so perhaps the ethernet is being used, but I could be imagining the speedup...

  I have another concern with my laptop. When I had a problem with the microphone, I tried to restore the system. But sadly, I had a mistake with the process and accidentally it was formatted. Its a built in laptop. (Toshiba m840, Windows 7, 64 bit) After the format process, programs were automatically installed. Until a friend of mine told me that I might have 2 Windows installed already. When we checked the program, he was right. I'm having 2 program files folders, which means I really have 2 Windows installed and running in my laptop. Supposed to be, there should be only 1 right? Can anyone help me how to delete the other Windows? Because I think it is occupying much space in the hard drive. They say it could make my laptop become slower.

• Can Remote Desktop connect only 2 monitors when the client has 3 or 4 monitors connected?

  I have three monitors (all 1920x1200) connected to my desktop and I would like to RDP into another computer (running Windows Server 2003) and use only two of my three monitors. The main monitor is used for notification from the LAN like email, build status, etc. I've tried modifying the .rdp file to have a higher resolution (i.e. 3840x1200 ) which sort of works but the bits per pixel goes down to 8 and you have to manually resize the window which means that you need to change it to around 3840x1150. If I supply /span to the commandline it gives me a bit more than 3840 spanned across the three monitors (is there perhaps a limitation of say 4096 for the maximum resolution?). WORKAROUND: Connect twice to the same computer. • Windows 8.1 keeps prompting for Network Share Credentials after every log on or restart

  I have a Network drive Shared in a Workgroup with 3 clients. Two clients with Windows 7 have persistent connections to the Share. No issues with those two. My windows 8.1 client keeps prompting for credentials at every restart / log on. I spent hours looking around for a solution: I have stored cred in cred manager, and tried every possible combination (WORKGROUP\user , COMPUTERNAME\user, user, .. and so on). I have changed NT and NTLM negotiation in policy manager. I've compared the settings under GPO network security with a working win 7 computer, everything is pretty much the same. -I've captured Wireshark to see SMB negotiation process, honestly I see the messages flowing around, and the share sending AUTH DENIED.. which means is how the 8.1 client formats the request.... that makes the share reject it.. Now I still don't really know why. Any ideas would be appreciated.
