• What''s the "earliest" place one can set an environment variable during Linux boot process?

  I know I can set a variable in a shell startup file, but the thing is, I am trying to set up a POSIX-compatible environment, and a POSIX shell does not parse any startup files other than the one specified by the environment variable ENV. This presents a problem - currently my login starts the shell as bash, which I will try to replace with sh so Bash runs as POSIX shell - however then it will not parse the default startup files and I need ENV set to specify these. Which means as far as I understand that I need to specify ENV before login starts the shell, correct? Now, how would I do that? I hope my question is clear, if not I will gladly redact it.

• Advice for an EC2 Architecture and Deployment Strategy

  My company is currently migrating several websites and PHP web applications (standard LAMP stack) from three in-house servers to Amazon EC2. Because we had only three servers, we clustered several low-traffic websites with perhaps one high-traffic web application, and served them from the same server. The server admin has pretty much copied the previous architecture wholesale onto the EC2 instances, simply upping the instance size to account for the highest traffic client that occupies that particular instance. This architecture might be okay if it wasn't for deployment. Any time one of these sites/apps changes, it means redeploying the entire instance, along with the 30 sites/apps it hosts, instead of just updating one. How can we architect our cloud in a more modular fashion? Should each app get its own appropriately-sized instance? What is the best strategy for deployment in this type of situation?

  I came across this term here: "11882875 -- Essbase Server does not start after an overinstallation." I know that a clean install is a software installation in which any previous version is removed. Googling 'overinstallation' turned up nothing, and I don't like to just assume it simply means 're-install'. UPDATE: So my understanding now is - the term "re-install" can be a bit ambiguous as it could either signify an installation after an uninstallation or otherwise. On the other hand the term "over-installation" specifically talks about installing something over an existing installation, that involved no uninstallations.

• Mac OS X: easiest (free, non-QuickTime Pro) application for converting numbered folder of images to movie

  I'd like to convert a folder of PNGs into a quicktime .mov with PNG compression (it's a folder of fractals in an animation; PNG compression works great here and the losslessness is important). What programs will do this with minimal fuss? (I don't have or want to pay for a full license of QuickTime Pro.) UPDATE: Let me make this more clear: minimal fuss means: I download some EncoderMagic.app (for example), I double click it to launch it. I select the folder with my numbered images, and out pops my movie. No mess. No resizing. ... Perhaps this doesn't exist (or is called QuickTime Pro?)

• Jail user to home directory while still allowing permission to create and delete files/folders

  I'm trying to give a client SFTP access to the root directory of their site on my server (Ubuntu 10.10) so they can manager their website themselves. While I have been successful in jailing a user to a directory and giving them SFTP access; they are only allowed to create and delete new files in sub directories (the directories they own). This means that I must give them access to the parent directory to the root of their site. How can I limit them to the root of their site (for example public_html) while still allowing them the ability create and delete files. All the tutorials I have read suggest that the root must be the owner of the user's home directory, which prevents them from write access inside that directory. I'm relatively new to managing my own server so any advice would be very grateful. Many thanks.

• Very frequent "Server not found" messages

  Recently, while browsing and clicking or typing an address, I get: "Server not found", "Connection was reset", or a half-loaded page. Usually the page loads instantly after clicking reload, but this means I must reload on every page. Images on one site, but stored at a different server don't load until reloading for a second time. Clicking "submit" on many sites frequently doesn't work unless I reload many times. Sometimes sites load, but without colors and formating, appearing as if they would in Lynx. This seems to happen with every Web site. My Internet service claims everything on their end is fine. This happened a day after running an update in aptitude. I have not updated any hardware. I have tried clearing Iceweasel's cache. I do not have any router or other equipment. What could be going on? How can I troubleshoot this? PPPoE connection, Iceweasel 3.5.16, Debian 6

• Cannot send email from EC2 instance on port 587

  I have written a mail service for our flask application that uses Celery and RabbitMQ to send emails (using gmail). I have got the celery consumer and producer communicating okay but I cannot get to send send emails. I am getting a socket.error: [Errno 101] Network is unreachable. I think this means that AWS is blocking port 587 - even though in my security group I opened both ports 587 and 25 (inbound and outbound). Any reason why this is happening? Any help will be highly appreciated.

  apache dont send me mp3 header even when use direct address to the file, it means i can play it with flash audio players on my web pages, but when i tried to download from direct address on my server i got "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset" or sometimes gives me a file with mp3 extension that has just 13B files-size, and when i open that file in gedit/notepad there is just: <html></html> i dont have any problem with php files and images, but mp3 files never be send to browser for download or play. i added this code to httpd.conf: AddType audio/mpeg .mp3 but there is not any difference!! thanks in advance

• Logins with only HTTP - are they as insecure as I'm thinking?

  Recently I was thinking about how websites like gmail and amazon use HTTPS during the login process when accessing your account. This makes sense, obviously, since you're typing in your account username and password and you would want that to be secure. However, on Facebook, among countless other websites, their logins are done with simple HTTP. Doesn't that mean that my login name and password are completely unencrypted? Which, even worse, means that all those people who login to their facebooks (or similar sites) at a wifi hotspot in public are susceptible to anyone getting their credentials using a simple packet sniffer (or something similar)? Is it really that easy? Or am I misunderstanding internet security? I'm a software engineer working on some web related stuff, and although at the current time I'm not too involved with the security aspect of our software, I knew I should probably know the answer to this question, since it's extremely fundamental to website security.   Hi I am using XAMPP on Windows XP. Since I changed the version from 1.73 to 1.77 MySQL does not start properly. That means that the status says, it is started, but the safety check says it is not . Because of that I cannot set any password, which is unacceptable. Any idea?   I'm a little confused about iTune's ability to set eq presets on a per-song basis. I have a song that I open, set to a given EQ preset, then close. When I play this song, however, the audio isn't being adjusted. If I open the EQ and turn it 'on', though, it then obeys the song's eq setting. Of course, if I leave the EQ on, then songs that do not have their own EQ setting default to whatever the EQ was originally set at. Not a HUGE deal, but it means that I would then normally have to have EQ always turned on, set to flat, so that any song that I HAVE given a EQ setting to will use it. Am I understanding how that works correctly? Is there a way to have individual songs use their EQ setting without having to turn on the EQ for everything?

• Pull/push student assignment files from computer lab computers (Windows 7)

  I have a computer lab with about 35 PC's all running Windows 7. The students do their work and save it on the D-drive in a particular folder such as a folder with the same name as the computer's name (e.g. LABPC001). I'd like a centralized way to pull all these folders in to the teacher's computer in the lab to check the assignments. It would be best if this didn't involve using an external website (e.g. Dropbox). I would also like to be able to distribute (send) files to the students in these same folders. I've seen software applications that do this but they cost about US$1000 which is far beyond our means. Suggestions for free, or almost free, best ways to set this up?

• How do I restore a SQL Server database from last night's full backup and the active transaction log file?

  I have been told that it's good practise to keep your SQL Server data files and log files on physically separate disks, because it'll allow you to recover your data to the point of failure if the data drive fails. So... let's say that mydata.mdf is on drive D:, and my mydata_log.ldf is on drive E:, and it's 16:45, and drive D: has just died horribly. So - I have last night's full backup (mydata.bak). I have hourly transaction-log backups that will bring the data back up to 16:00... but that means I'll lose 45 minutes worth of updates. I still have mydata_log.ldf on the E: drive, which should contain EVERY transaction that was committed right up to the point where the drive failed. How do I go about recreating the database and restoring data from the backup file and the live transaction log, so I don't lose any updates? Is this possible?

• Making Windows 7 default to "All Files" when opening a document?

  I'm taking over an old coworkers job and part of that means I'll be working on various IFS tickets without any real ERP experience. I'm working with one user who is trying to check in documents in IFS. Right now, IFS defaults to JPEGs and then she has to select "All Files" in order find PDFs. Example: http://i.imgur.com/xK0iAfF.png As much as I'd like to say "it's one extra step, come on" the user's manager has insisted it interrupts her workflow and asked us to get on it. I've spoken with our IFS experts and they're unaware of any setting that would make the open dialog default to All Files in IFS. I've searched in Google for any setting in Windows 7 that would do that - but those have been unsuccessful - I keep getting results about changing which program opens a specific file type.

  Hi I am setting up a master image to clone to all same machine type Windows 7 client, I login as administrastor and installed all the programs and changed the desktop settings etc, but my local administrator profile is 244megs in size, which will become the default profile of the local machine when sysprep, we have a 2003 server that I want to use mandatory profile for all login users which means I need to copy this profile to the server so when any users login to the domain they are using this profile, loading a 244megs profile is going to be very slow since it will be removed from the client when they logoff. So next time they login it will take a long time again. Is there anything I can do, can I just copy just the bare minimum files from the default profile to the server, as I am not sure what parts I need, I read that I must copy my documents, my documents/pictures so the folder redirection will work. What else do I need to copy to the server? I have firefox xmark sync also and MS words etc. THanks

  Is there any way to configure a computer to login automatically at bootup and then IMMEDIATELY switch users? The purpose is to trigger the profile loading process for the assumed user so that when they go to login, their profile loads instantaneously. Yet, the immediate user switch means that the login password is still required before any actual use. A few of the attempts I have made require storing the password in plain-text for the system to use. Needless to say that is undesireable. I have been looking for this solution for years; if anyone knows of a better solution to skinning this cat I am all ears. EDIT: tsdiscon command will Lock the workstation.

• Cloning Fresh Windows 7 with external HDD, DVD or CDs?

  I want to create Windows installation disk (not necessarily CD) from my Windows 7 Pro laptop, not sure what it actually means here. The material is about 50-60GB, requiring about 12 pcs of 5GB disk (not going to happen, too much work to use them later). I have the Windows serial on the laptop bottom and this is so-called firm -laptop (no idea what it actually mean, better warranty and some instant support thing apparently). Now how to do the clone with external material such as DVDs? how can I create mock-windows-installation medium or some real windows-installation medium? I am now not sure whether Windows offers W7 -installations medium online, well my W -peer mentioned some MSDAA -something. • (Possibly) Corrupted DDCrypt self-decrypting file

  I recently discovered some files I had encrypted and archived on a CD using DDCrypt 2.0, which is a small encryption utility from back in the day. One of its functions is to create self-decrypting files, which are essentially EXE files that you can enter a password and then have the file extracted onto your filesystem. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get them to do this properly. They appear to be decrypting and then at the last moment I get the error: Error opening encrypted file C:\users\username\Temp\dde3cfa.tmp Reason: Success and then another dialog immediately says Error extracting ddc file. I'm not really sure what this means (certainly not success), but I've checked out the temporary file and it appears to be garbage data (although of the right file size). I don't know if anyone has an idea what might be done here to extract the files, or has dealt with a similar situation before. Any ideas are appreciated! • Windows 8.1 keeps prompting for Network Share Credentials after every log on or restart

  I have a Network drive Shared in a Workgroup with 3 clients. Two clients with Windows 7 have persistent connections to the Share. No issues with those two. My windows 8.1 client keeps prompting for credentials at every restart / log on. I spent hours looking around for a solution: I have stored cred in cred manager, and tried every possible combination (WORKGROUP\user , COMPUTERNAME\user, user, .. and so on). I have changed NT and NTLM negotiation in policy manager. I've compared the settings under GPO network security with a working win 7 computer, everything is pretty much the same. -I've captured Wireshark to see SMB negotiation process, honestly I see the messages flowing around, and the share sending AUTH DENIED.. which means is how the 8.1 client formats the request.... that makes the share reject it.. Now I still don't really know why. Any ideas would be appreciated.

  I have another concern with my laptop. When I had a problem with the microphone, I tried to restore the system. But sadly, I had a mistake with the process and accidentally it was formatted. Its a built in laptop. (Toshiba m840, Windows 7, 64 bit) After the format process, programs were automatically installed. Until a friend of mine told me that I might have 2 Windows installed already. When we checked the program, he was right. I'm having 2 program files folders, which means I really have 2 Windows installed and running in my laptop. Supposed to be, there should be only 1 right? Can anyone help me how to delete the other Windows? Because I think it is occupying much space in the hard drive. They say it could make my laptop become slower.

This means that nginx will serve the same request even if the content of one of the fields specified in the Vary header has changed. In my case I only care about the Accept-Language header, all the others have been taken care of. How can I make nginx cache everything except responses that have a Vary header that contains Accept-Language? • How do I get these permissions working right so Apache can work with the files?

  I am having a go at setting up my own Apache and can't seem to get my head around the permissions. Lets say I grab a file from somewhere off the web and it has permission of 600. I then upload this file via ftp to a user directory, which is also an apache virtual site, and so this file retains this permission of 600. This means that the user can read this file, but Apache can't: it will be forbidden. What is the most simple solution so that apache can read + write whatever files end up in the users directory? Can apache be granted some sort of root power over files in a directory?

• Can Remote Desktop connect only 2 monitors when the client has 3 or 4 monitors connected?

  I have three monitors (all 1920x1200) connected to my desktop and I would like to RDP into another computer (running Windows Server 2003) and use only two of my three monitors. The main monitor is used for notification from the LAN like email, build status, etc. I've tried modifying the .rdp file to have a higher resolution (i.e. 3840x1200 ) which sort of works but the bits per pixel goes down to 8 and you have to manually resize the window which means that you need to change it to around 3840x1150. If I supply /span to the commandline it gives me a bit more than 3840 spanned across the three monitors (is there perhaps a limitation of say 4096 for the maximum resolution?). WORKAROUND: Connect twice to the same computer. • connected ethernet without disabling wireless, now I have *two* LAN ip's?

  Ok I'm on ubuntu 11.04, not too knowledgeable about network stuff. Usually people ask things like "wired works but wireless does not!". In m y case, I'm just curious about what it means to have both of them seemingly connected. In 'ipconfig' in shell I see that I have 192.168.1.2 for the wireless AND 192.168.1.3 for the ethernet. What does this mean for applications, does one of the two get precedence? It seems like my pages load slightly faster, so perhaps the ethernet is being used, but I could be imagining the speedup...
