• DVD Drive Failing on Windows 7

  Hello, I have x64 Windows 7 running on an ASUS M50VM. The DVD drive works completely unreliably if not at all. But the story is not that simple so bear with me...here are the gory details. When I first got the machine it came with Windows XP and I upgraded it to Windows Vista X64 and the DVD worked fine. When Windows 7 RC2 came out I tried it on a Virtual Machine and I liked it so much that I upgraded the machine to Win7 RC1. The DVD worked fine. Of course, RC1 was going to start spontaneously rebooting, so when Windows 7 was released I DID A CLEAN INSTALL of Windows 7. Just to clarify...by clean install I mean I did a FORMAT of the HARD DRIVE and INSTALLED it from scratch. EVER since then the DVD mostly doesn't work. I can sometime read from disk but that will often hang. (Please see my description below of HANG for details.) CD or DVD writes ALWAYS fail with a HANG (I have done a successful write only one time.) Here is what I mean by HANG... *Explorer Window is unresponsive. *Any software accessing the DVD drive is unresponsive. *The DVD tray will not eject. *Using a paper clip will eject but the disk is usually spinning real hard. *Attempting to shut down windows will fail. I have waited as long as ten minutes but the whole OS seems to hang. I do a hard shutdown. *Sometimes accessing the DVD (when it does not cause a HANG) will still fail and the device will actually seem to disappear from the system until I reboot. A couple of other things. It is NOT a hardware failure. It is the Windows OS. I know this because I swapped out my DVD drive with a friend with the same model...his machine is fine (he is still running Vista X64) and my machine still fails. For what it is worth. I swapped out my primary disk with the INTEL 160GB SSD. (If necessary, restart your windows) 5.) phpinfo() should show imagick enabled. after that I execute a sample script but its not working. it shows the Imagic class missing error. Please help me to install Imagick. :-(

• Windows XP to Ubuntu 10.04 via VNC does not refresh

  I've tried tightvncserver and vnc4server on Ubuntu. I've tried tightvnc viewer and ultravnc viewer on Windows XP. I can connect from Windows to Ubuntu with any combination, but there is no screen refresh: I can drag a window on Ubuntu using my mouse in Windows or type into a terminal in Ubuntu from my keyboard in Windows, but the image does not change on Windows. I can request a screen refresh from Windows but the screen does not update. I am running the ATI driver on Ubuntu. I've tried stepping the System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects down from Extra to Normal with no effect.

  Hi, I have following partitions on a 1 TB disk. 14 GB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB NTFS Data partition for windows 7 Now because of the problems mentioned in my other question here I got a brand new windows 7 cd and want to install it from scratch after deleting all the extra partitions. But windows 7 installation doesn't give me such options. It refuses to touch the 14GB Recovery and 100 MB (reserved by previous windows 7) partition. Any ideas ? Note: Because of it is a dynamic disks most of the freely available tools refuse to delete the partitions on the disk. regards.

  If I set my Windows 7 account to automatically logon so I don't have to type a password, and I don't have to click my username on the logon screen, I heard it's a security risk. From Windows 7 Auto Login: Although I don’t personally recommend this, there are some people out there who don’t want to bother with using a password to protect their Windows user account. Of course, using a password in Windows isn’t required, only suggested. But even if you don’t fill one in, you still have to click your user icon to start the login process. An easier way - although again much less secure - is to enable auto-logins for your Windows PC. This is possible in Windows 7, as it was in prior versions, but it takes a little finagling to do so. (And for good reason, darn it.) What is risky about it besides people being able to logon locally? Does it make it easier for hackers to logon remoately?

  I'm trying to create a Virtualbox image of windows 8 consumer preview. I tried this tutorial: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-install-windows-8-on-virtualbox/ I did exactly what was said in that tutorial. At the step "Now navigate to the Windows 8 developer build ISO file that you downloaded and select it." I get the error "Could not get the storage format. (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED)". I also get this if I use the regular wizard. Host OS: windows 7 Virtualbox version: 4.1.16 Both windows 8 64 bit and 32 bit tested.

• Incremental backup up from a remote ftp box to a Windows server

  I need to backup a website to a Windows server every week and I only have access to remote FTP. I'd like to use an incremental backup program so that I can just copy the files every week on a schedule and not worry too much about the size of the backups becoming an issue. Unfortunately, I can't find a Windows program that will automatically make incremental backups of specific FTP folders and files, as most programs are designed to backup to FTP, not from it. Are there any applications that can do this? I also have a Ubuntu 10.04 box I could use to relay the site to the Windows server if I needed to run Linux programs, but I would prefer a Windows-only solution over a Linux/Windows one, and a combined Linux/Windows solution over not having it work at all.

• My computer resets when i try to install Windows 7 (USB/DVD)

  I had a troublesome software starting up when Windows 7 was starting and i had no way to remove it because i couldn't log in to Windows. Not even safe mode. But i used Hiren's Boot CD to edit the registry to stop that software from starting up... But my efforts were not useful as Windows kept on going to an ultimate freeze just before the login screen should have been shown. And just freezes and I cannot do anything. So i decided heck with it and i now want to format the disk and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7. But now regardless of USB or DVD i use to boot the setup, it loads fine till you see the animating Windows and it just resets the laptop! Just plain resets! Hiren's Boot CD and Mini XP, strange enough but still works :( Any ideas what might be causing the laptop to reset in Windows 7 setup?

  For 3 days now I've been unable to boot into my Windows 7 partition, and all my research has been to no avail. I'm hoping someone here has more ideas on how to fix this. When I boot up now, I get the black screen with BCD error that says theres no valid file system or it may be corrupt (pardon my lack of detail, no copy/paste is available then). When I boot with the Windows 7 disc and go into repair tools, no operating system is found, and attempting to automatically repair the problem fails with Unknown Operating System (Unknown Disk) or something similar. When I drop into the command prompt, I am able to see and navigate my C:\ drive without issue. I attempt to use bootrec: C:\> bootrec /ScanOS Finds C:\Windows as a system partition. C:\> bootrec /RebuildBCD Fails with volume does not contain a recognized file system. please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. So then I attempt to fix the bootsector: C:\> bootsect /nt60 C: /force Which completes successfully (sorry, no output..) Upon rebooting, I have the same problem. I've also tried all of the above after making my Windows partition active: C:\> diskpart DISKPART> select disk 1 DISKPART> select partition 1 DISKPART> active DISKPART> exit Then bootrec as above, both with and without a reboot after the DISKPART commands.   I bought a new Toshiba s855 notebook with windows 8 preinstalled. Secure boot feature was enabled by default. I installed latest version of ubuntu after disabling secure boot feature(it was not possible to install ubuntu without disabling secure boot). But now when I enable secure boot, the system automatically boots into windows 8, and it boots into ubuntu when I disable secure boot. EasyBCD lists the following boot entries but I can only see Windows 8 in boot menu: Default: Windows 8 Timeout: 7 seconds EasyBCD Boot Device: C:\ Entry #1 Name: Ubuntu BCD ID: {971641cd-304a-11e2-be82-806e6f6e6963} Device: \Device\HarddiskVolume2 Bootloader Path: \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi ... • What causes Windows Boot to stall?

  For about 6 months now I have been having this weird problem where Windows 7 fails to fully boot correctly. What happens is this. Starting Windows shows up on the screen. Then 3 out of 4 times nothing else happens, no Windows Flag animation, just nothing occurs. After 3 or 4 restarts repeating steps 1-2 above, the Windows Flag animation finally shows up and everything works as expected. My question is what is causing this problem in steps 1 and 2? Because I have tried the following with no luck: Error checking and correcting of any disk errors Updating drivers Doing a clean install of Windows 7 My setup is as follows: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate 8 GB RAM 128 GB Crucial SSD (firmware 0005) Dell Latitude E6410 Intel Wireless and Graphics Other than what I have tried above I am totally out of ideas and looking for some new ones to try.

From that I understand that I have to reinstall the OS but my computer is so old that I have lost the backup and recovery disk. My Computer's Info: 32Bit Computer Pentium 4 Windows XP Service Pack 2 HP History: My Computer has 4 hard drives 2 internal 40 GB drives (C And D) 2 external 8GB drives (E And F) Additional Info: I need the files inside C And E The computer reads my flash drive as a hard drive (8.45GB)(I have never booted while my USB pluged in while I was troubleshooting) With some test I discovered that the C drive wasn't detected by the computer I have already configured the boot order of BiOS I have Set The SATA to IDE The Question: I have a setup for windows 8 32 bit how can I boot from my USB to run that setup? If that isn't the proper way to handle this problem please tell me the proper way.

  Windows 7 won't reconnect to my network drives on startup. Once it is done booting opening Windows Explorer and clicking each share will mount them. Windows 7 Enterprise N Service Pack 1 I have attempted formatting the windows machine - first thing done to machine was to map the network drives, upon reboot they were disconnected. It is running on an Crucial M4 64gb SSD. The host of the network shares is a Ubuntu-Server machine connected through a gigabit switch. A modem provides dhcp, although both these machines have static IP's defined. It won't reconnect the drives regardless of whether they're SAMBA shares or NFS shares - therefore I believe it's an issue with the windows machine. Ubuntu 11.10 (GNU/Linux 3.0.0-12-server x86_64) I've tried using ip address instead of netbios name for mapping shares on the windows machine, Also tried setting EnableLinkedConnections=1 gpedit.msc Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System-Logon - always wait for the network at computer startup and logon = yes

I have also tried to reinstall the windows 7 using USB but it gives error of something UI or Boot configuration error. Even now Ubuntu 12.04 is also not reinstalling. Now what I want to do is install windows 7 and install ubuntu 12.04 in virtual box so that I can run both system as this is not working. But can't because I can't open Window 7 even can't format my drive. Please suggest something.

  I am using Windows 7 Professional 64bit. This is my webcam. It is first time using this webcam in my pc. It's name is A4tech - PK-331F. When I plugged that webcam, windows start installing drivers automatically but unfortunately it installed wrong drivers. The drivers Windows 7 installed are Vimicro USB 2.0 PC Camera (Venus) and these drivers aren't related to this webcam. Now I did some modifications to windows so it isn't installing drivers automatically but whenever I plug that webcam but same name of drivers and doesn't install it. I think because of it, I can't install it's original drivers. I don't want Windows recognize this webcam with this name. How can I prevent Windows from doing this?.

In Windows 7 I used Hirens but it is not working for Windows 8. - I am talking about local user account password not Microsoft online accounts like @hotmail.com or domain accounts those can be reset. • Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 (TrueCrypt) Multi-boot Problems

  I have now been searching days for a solution but have found nothing. I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 with TrueCrypt as a multi-boot. It was working fine for a few weeks until I needed to reinstall Ubuntu. If I have the boot flag on the partition where Windows 7 is install (This is where the boot flags was when working before.), it boots fine in to Windows 7 but when pressing Esc it can't find grub2. If I have the boot flag on the partition where Ubuntu is install, it boots fine in to Ubuntu (by pressing Esc or typing the password) but unable to access Windows. I have tried reinstalling TrueCrypt Boot loader and repairing the header but it have no affect. My Partitions: sda1 - Windows 7 Recovery (GRUB2) sda2 - Windows 7 (TrueCrypt Boot Loader) sda3 - Ubuntu 10.10 (/) sda4 - Extended sda5 - Swap sda6 - Ubuntu (/home) Does anyone have any ideas? • Windows 7 reboot and freezing, possible power problems?

  My Gateway LX Series desktop is about 6-8 months old. When I bought it, it had Windows Vista. I then put the RC version of Windows 7 on it. About 3 months after I bought it, it would randomly start to reboot, actually just shut off. I monitored the temperature levels and they seemed normal. So I installed a fresh Windows 7 Ultimate OEM 64bit. It actually got worse and would reboot more frequently. I then contacted Gateway and they said my machine was built for Windows Vista (made me chuckle), and told me to update my BIOS. So I did, and it was fixed for a good couple months. Recently, it started to do it again. Now I noticed early on it was doing it most often, if not every time when I was either watching a flash video or playing a flash game. So I decided to download the drivers again and I also downloaded my motherboard drivers. Seemed to be okay. A week later it started doing it again. And now it's doing it even more frequently. Sometimes I would turn it on, login into Windows and *BAM!* it would shut off. Now I am at the point where I can hardly get it to turn on. It would freeze at the point where it says "Starting Windows", with the Windows logo. Sometimes it would say "Checking disk for consistency" or whatever and freeze there (not shut off, just freeze). I even got the prompt to launch startup repair. But that also freezes when it says starting Windows. It does not really freeze, just never loads up. I am kind of lost as to what's going on. I have a few ideas but nothing I want to pursue (graphics card? hard drive?). Another thing I did try was to boot into a live disk of Ubuntu and try to launch every program I could and get on the internet but I never got it to reboot. So it sounds like to me it's a Windows thing, but I have no idea. I am just stuck and would like to see if any one has any ideas or could lead me in the right direction.

  Our software installs a package of legacy software for the client, some of it has old hlp file from 3rd party vendor requiring winhlp32.exe (note: we have no legal right to modify the hlp). Those client may only have cd/dvd and might not have internet access, etc. So I need a free 'WinHlp32.exe compatible' replacement for our redistribution under vista and windows 7. Background of problem: -Microsoft stopped including the 32-bit Help file viewer in Windows releases beginning with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. -Starting with the release of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, third-party software developers are no longer authorized to redistribute WinHlp32.exe with their programs. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607

• Snow Leopard Windows 7 File sharing issue

  Hello, wondering if anyone might have any suggestions on how to fix this issue in file sharing between Snow Leopard and Windows 7. On my home network, I have a system running windows 7 which acts as a file server: \WINDOWS7-A\SHARE I also have an IMac which can access the file share most of the time.... however now comes the problem, as soon as I introduce my Windows 7 Laptop and copy files over from it onto the file server (\Windows7-A), the file server become no longer accessible from the Snow Leopard machine... I assume this somehow has to do with elevated security on the network share having been negotiated between the 2 Windows 7 machines which is no longer allowing the Mac to see the Windows machines... but not sure how to disable this, as the only way I can restore communication between the mac and the Windows 7 machine is to restart it... less than ideal... Any suggestions would be welcome.
