• Samba share doesn't have write permissions

  alright, I've got one that should be really simple. I want a wide open smb share for my Windows 7 machine. Everyone should be able to access it, regardless of domain or username or anything. My smb.conf has: security = share guest account = nobody Along with: [DC_Backup] path = /Windows_Backups/DC comment = Backup of Domain Controller force user = nobody guest ok = yes public = yes read only = no I can access it, but I cannot write to it. Windows keeps telling me I "need permission to perform this action" Where do I start?

  I just setup virtual machines on one hardware with Vagrant (this is just a test environment, not production!). I want to use a Puppet to configure them and next try to setup OpenStack. I am not sure If I am understanding how this should look at the end. Is it possible to have below architecture with OpenStack after all where I will run one Virtual Machine with Linux? ------------------------------- | VM | ------------------------------- | NOVA | NOVA | NOVA | ------------------------------- | OpenStack | ------------------------------- | Node | Node | Node | ------------------------------- (In my environment Nodes are just virtual machines, but my question concerns separate Hardware nodes) After some comments...   I am configuring some services to run on Ubuntu server. I was going through the link below where they use runit to run the services and monit to monitor the services - http://rubyworks.rubyforge.org/manual/monit.html http://rubyworks.rubyforge.org/manual/runit.html 1) The services are all started through monit. 2) Monit inturn starts them using runit. What is the advantage of using the above setup, where the services are run using runit via Monit. Why use runit in the middle, instead of directly starting them with monit?

• Storage server 2003 shadow copy backups deleted

  Hi there We have a 1TB storage server I've just gone to transfer a 100Gb file across to it. And it has deleted the shadow copy. From Googling I understand that this probably occurred: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826936 Is there any way of recovering those shadow copies back?   I have a Livebox connection to the Internet and I have set up my network as follows: - Livebox <--> Win2k8R2 Server - Livebox <--> Netgear N150 Router - Router <--> Other PCs Therefore, in my LAN, - the Livebox has IP address 192.168.1.1, - the Router 192.168.1.12 (when accessed from the Livebox or the server), - the Router 10.0.0.1 (when accessed from the PCs connected to the Router), - the server 192.168.1.2, - the PCs 10.0.0.x I was using a previous configuration, which was as follows: - Livebox <--> Netgear N150 Router - Router <--> Win2k8R2 Server - Router <--> Other PCs Everything was simple, and I just had to forward all ports for incoming connection on the Livebox to the Router, and then forward the specific ports to the Server as needed (it must be however noted that any server I use is found on the Win2k8R2 server itself). In this previous configuration, the IP addresses were as follows: - Livebox 192.168.1.1 - Router 192.168.1.12 (when seen from Livebox) - Router 10.0.0.1 (when seen from server & PCs connected to it) - Server 10.0.0.2 - PCs 10.0.0.x So now of course, my port-forwarding does not work anymore since the server is not connected (directly) to the Router. What I would like to know is how do I configure the Livebox and Router to still have the features like before? From what I understand of networks (which is very limited, btw), I see these options: Make the router assign IPs like 192.168.1.x (but then I want the forwarding to be done from the router itself, is it possible?) The forwarding on the router to the server uses IP address 10.0.0.2. I could change it to 192.168.1.2 (Is that even possible, does it work?) Forward all ports from the Livebox itself to the server, and then manage them there (Is software-based port-forwarding as secure as hardware-based?)

• backup, sync and search files over internet and intranet

  There are many online backup options out there. Dropbox, Sugarsync, Mozy, Carbonite, Jungledisk and my favorite so far, Crashplan. Some of them allow searching, all of them sync with their online servers, none of those (or many many others I didn't listed here) have what I want. I'm _not_ looking for an online backup service in here. Sure, some people might say "use rsync", "linux" and/or "set up apache" and so on... But that's just too much for maintenance, if it's even viable of building up. It needs to be simple. So, anyone knows of a really good solution out there? Picture mostly Google Desktop Search (or quick search) awesome searching, mixed with Crashplan Desktop, which is able to do everything by itself, and something like Dropbox's file versioning, along with dropbox the ability to seamless sync over intranet and internet like crashplan, switching between them when needed. I bet there's nothing like this yet, but well, I'm not sure. It would be great!

• Common filesystem for servers behind a rackspace load balancer

  Our PHP application consists of a single web server that will receive files from clients and perform a CPU-intensive analysis on them. Right now, analysis of a single user upload can take 3sec to conclude and take 100% CPU. This makes our system capacity amount to 1/3 requests per second. My team's requirement is to increase capacity without a lot of code reengineering. A possible solution would be to set up a load balancer in front of multiple servers running the same app, connecting to a common DB. The problem is that the analysis outputs files on disk. A load balancer would increase capacity, but then files won't be available between servers so consequent client requests may fail. We are hosted on Rackspace, is there a way to configure some sort of "common" storage for all servers, without having to rewrite our file persistance code? Current code relies on simple fopens etc. What are our options?

  Hi, I found that under Ubuntu, WICD and command "/sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan" give a little different list of wireless networks. Windows 7 also gives a slightly different list. For example, there is one shown in WICD but not in the command nor in Windows 7. I wonder why? How to get a complete list of wireless networks? Thanks and regards!

• 403 Forbidden serving static files from VirtualBox shared folder with nginx (Ubuntu 10.04LTS guest, Windows 7 host)

  I'm working on a local development VM and trying to test serving my site with gunicorn and nginx as a reverse proxy for static resources only. The site loads minus static resources with user nginx; in nginx.conf. Attempting to load a static resource individually reveals a 403 Forbidden error. For background. The static resources are in a shared folder under /media/sf_work. All files are owned by root:vboxsf (VirtualBox default). My user account on the system has been added to the vboxsf group, and I have full access to the shared folder. For comparison, I tried changing the nginx.conf user to my user account. In that scenario, the static files did load, but then the homepage itself gives a 403 Forbidden error. So, I then tried adding the nginx user to the vboxsf group, but then everything gives a 403 Forbidden error. After further investigation it seems that if the nginx.conf user is in any group, it results in a 403 Forbidden. Any idea what could possibly be going on here?

• Home Network Stopped Working

  I have a home network where a machine running Windows 7 Ultimate N acts as a central hub for other devices to access media. This has been running for around 2 years now and there has been no recent configuration changes. The machine has a static IP address (192.168.0.3), which also has not been changed. A few laptops, Sonos music system and mobiles are using the machine for music/video mostly. Additionally, post 3389 was also open for RDP. I used a no-ip agent to map a hostname so I could RDP to the machine from the internet. As of yesterday when I try to ping the machine, I get PING:Transmit Failed, General Error I noticed however, the IP it is pinging is 0.0.2.233. All shares etc are no longer functioning including RDP. On the machine itself, an IP config shows like nothing has changed. It still shows the expected IP. If I ping itself from its hostname, I get the same error as above. machine has been rebooted, the router has been also. Any ideas where to even start on this?

• How are file permissions applied for shared drives?

  I have two computers: A (running Windows Vista) B (running XP). I shared C: on computer A (as \\A\C ), and require a username (X) plus pw to access it. If I browse the the share \A\C on computer B, after entering username+pw I can access most folders, but one folder "\\A\C\F" gives me "permission denied". I looked at that folder's permissions on A, and it has full access permissons for all "Administrators". I use the account "A\X" to authenticate when accessing the share on A. X is a user account (on A) that is an "Administrator" according to Window's user management. Still, I cannot access this folder. If I explicitly add the "X" account to the accounts that may access folder F (under Properties / Security), I can access it without problems. I do not understand why I need to explicitly grant permission for X to get access to F. Is it not enough that X is an Administrator account?

• TextPad printing to incorrect printer

  I have tried to find an answer on Google, and searched SU, but have not found anything on this particular issue. I Looked for a setting in the TextPad menu and didn't see anything that seemed relevant. I have 2 networked printers that are the same model. (HP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL 5) One is near me and the other is across the building. The one near me is my default. It seems that TextPad remembers the last printer used and defaults to it rather than printing to the system default, so when I force it to print to my default printer once, the problem is solved until I decide to print to the other printer for some reason. If I don't remember the problem, and specifically print a job to the nearby printer to correct it, I'll end up either wasting paper or wasting trips across the building to pick up printjobs that got printed there by accident. Has anyone else noticed this problem? Is there a solution?

• Is there any way to prevent a Mac from creating dot underscore files?

  At work we're letting one of our very tech savvy clients actually help out a little with a few development projects specific to him. However, he uses his own personal Macbook, and as he edits files on our (Windows) networks, his Macbook always creates a bunch of unnecessary meta files that we end up deleting later. For instance, it creates a file called .DS_Store in any directory he opens, as well as "dot underscore" files for each file he edits. So for instance, if he's editing a file called "Main.php", his Macbook will create another file called "._Main.php". I know there are ways to prevent creation of .DS_Store files, but none about how to prevent creation of these hidden files prefixed with dot underscore. Is there any way to turn that off on Macs? Any way to prevent it from creating those files in the first place?

• How can I find out what's uploading traffic to the internet?

  Some program I'm running is constantly uploading to the Internet. It's uploaded 300MB in the last few hours. I could reboot and see if it stops, but I'd prefer to find out what it is if possible. I've tried using the resource monitor but it's totally nonsensical - even if I run a broadband speedtest, it barely registers any traffic. Ideally I'd like to find a tool which can tell me the current bandwidth of each application. I think NetLimiter used to work on XP but it's not supported for Windows 7.

Assuming you would want to block access to Yahoo (e.g http://www.yahoo.co.jp, http://www.yahoo.com, http://www.yahoo.co.in), you would ideally want to block all of the above URLs, if I use a regular expression and try to search something called yahoo it seems to get blocked. We are just interested in applying rules which would be most commonly used across all companies (e.g. social networking sites like facebook, orkut), porn sites (e.g. sex), gaming sites (games), movie & song download sites, and sites where they can upload data (e.g. rapidshare) What would be the common set of effective rules in achieving the above?

• Failover NIC with Windows 7 running Apache Server

  I have a Apache Server running on a Windows 7 Desktop for a internal website (Intranet). I am trying to figure out how I can make this system as failover safe as possible. One thing I want to do is use the 2nd NIC card that is currently disable. I only have one gateway address to my router. I do not have any computer running a Server O/S. If NIC1 crashes by chance(just humor me!), how could NIC2's IP take on the host name (I have mapped in host file) . I don't really care if the static IP of NIC2 changes seeing that the host name is the only thing I need. Could I add two IP's to the host file, with same host email and maybe create some script that will run IF NIC 1 fails? OR is there any failover software that will do this for me?

• Word 2007 consistently crashes when I use my VPN

  Hi, My Office 2007 consistently crashes when I use it while connected to the VPN. This happens even with local files. When I try to paste stuff, it tries to connect to the printer (over VPN) and if I stop the process (which in itself blocks for about a minute), then Word 2007 is bound to crash a few seconds afterwords. My VPN is Check Point VPN-1 SecureClient Anyone knows what can be done with this problem?

• Why can't I share a folder on Vista?

  On Windows Vista, I right-click on a folder, Properties, Sharing tab, and either "Advanced Sharing" or "Share"-"Share" causes an error: Windows File Sharing This program will not run Access is denied. Close My user account is an "administrator" on this machine. I think this behavior changed since my computer was added to the new domain recently. I have other folders shared (from long ago), and they continue to be shared just fine.

• Cannot access shares via \\servername but \\ip works

  To set up the scenario: One of our techs set one of the domain controllers to use Microsoft time. The time IS correct (including Time Zone) and DOES match the other domain controller's time; it was previously incorrect, however. Since the change, no users can connect via \\servername\share or \\servername.domainname.com but \\ip\share works fine. I cannot even access it from the other domain controller with which I know both have the same time. The servername DOES resolve to the correct IP address. Also, strangely enough, \\domainname.com works as well which resolves to the same server. Finally Everything that I have tried does resolve to the same, correct IP address. The error is: login failure: The target account name is incorrect. I believe it is time related but since the times are correct and match I'm not sure. Anyone know what might cause this?

• Samba file shares - ownership of folder accessible for 1 group verified by MS active direcctory

  I have a machine set up to share a folder /srv/sambashare, here's an exerpt of the config file: [share] path = /srv/sambashare writable = yes The permissions of that folder are set at 700 and it is owned by nobody:nogroup at the moment. The problem I face is probably a simple one but I'm fairly new to Samba so I'm not sure what to do. The contents of the share should be accessible to a particular user who will authenticate with domain credentials, checked against Active Directory by kerberos. I haven't got kerberos configured yet as I wanted to test the share as soon as samba was configured, albeit basically, to ensure that it works. I've noticed that I can only access & write to the share when the folder is either owned by the user logging in or made world writable. The key issues are that this folder can't be world writable as it contains sensitive stuff, but at the same time can't be owned by a user or group since they come from the AD server. Anyone know what I should do?
