• Drupal email users

  I'm using Drupal 6.16: When a user creates an account on my site I have them select a category (ie children, youth, adult, etc). This is done with the select list box using the content_profile module. I have a content type that posts an announcement. In this content type is a check box that says 'email group'. Right now it does nothing, but what I would like for it to do is e-mail all the users that are associated with the group they chose when signing up for their account. If this will require extra code please be specific as I am not a strong php programmer. Thanks for the help!! msindle

• Vim Editor is very smart?

  I am programming in C++ or Java. So I want to use Vim editor, because it is very flexible. I have heard that I can configure the Vim editor to be able to go from object to the definition from function to the definition from class name to the definition Do we have any professional Vim-er that could tell me how exactly to configure Vim for that? Thanks in advance. P.S. In case readers will consider this question is not connected with programming, I would say that this is improving speed of programming. So it is a help to the programmer. So please don't close this question. EDIT: Also I would like to know how vim works with code completion and can vim hint the list of methods that are available for the certain object? • Why isn't my phone charging with some micro usb cables?

  I ordered 3 microUSB cables over ebay. My phone was at about 50% battery and I wanted to use it as a hot spot for some browsing on my laptop, so I plugged it in, a charging icon appeared on the phone, my laptop showed it as a connected usb device and so I went about my business. About 30 minutes later I checked the phone and to my dismay saw 45% battery. But ahh, I thought, I have been putting the poor little thing under too much pressure, acting as a WiFi hotspot must drain the battery quicker than it can charge via usb, perhaps even using my laptops usb port wouldn't output enough power. Unscathed I continued on and when I was going to bed I plugged the usb cable into a mains adapter and switched everything battery consuming off and content, went to sleep. The next morning I was awoken by my phones alarm which got cut off unexpectedly. I attempted to unlock my phone which showed no more signs of life. Why isn't my phone charging with these new USB cables? For clarity: They transfer data with no problems The phone appears to be charging, showing all the signs and lights it normally would, the cable that came with the phone works as you would expect, so its not a fault with the phone, I think they slow the discharging of the phone, but I could be wrong. Are these just bad quality cables? Is there a way to fix this issue?

• ssh-add insists on passphrase

  I have a new ssh key problem. I have successfully used them for years with Heroku, Git and other servers so I can login without having to issue a passphrase. A few weeks ago, I was unable to push a git repository on my machine to my Heroku and it responded with Permission denied (publickey). Hmm. Everything else but this Heroku function still works. So I ssh-keygen -t rsa -C "newHeroku" with no passphrase (hit return so it would be empty). So I enter: sudo chmod 600 ~/.ssh/newHeroku* Then: ssh-add ~/.ssh/newHeroku.pub Returning return for the passphrase asked it exits without error. The next step is to: ssh-add /Users/sam/.ssh/newHeroku.pub To verify that it's "live" I enter: ssh-add -l To which the output is still The agent has no identities. Okay, to eliminate variables, I repeat the key generation process but entering in a passphrase for a new key. I ssh-add the new key and get the "Enter passphrase" as expected. Now this is why I'm posting here and not on a Heroku blog because ssh-add fails because the passphrase I used keeps getting rejected. It appears, even though I have no problem with my keys elsewhere, that something is wrong with passphrase because even though I get no errors, I get errors when on the one that expects a passphrase. One question, should I expect the Passphrase request for ssh-add when I have not generated a passphrase? It's been suggested that this is a clue and I offer it. Or maybe I have a poor understanding of what ssh-add is doing. Wouldn't be the first time I asked a stupid Q. Also, I'm on Lion and have updated no system updates in the few weeks of this period except application updates.

• Looking to eventually build a smartphone app...

  Hi all- I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app. So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct? I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request. tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?

• Most efficient way to update a MySQL Database on a Linux host with that of an ASP.Net Form on Window

  My kind webhost (1and1) royally asked me to go elsewhere to do something like this. I have 2 sites. One of them was developed by a .Net programmer. Now I am contracted to implement a PHP site and fetch data from the .Net site. There is an ASP.Net form that a customer fills and when they hit submit, the data gets stored in SQL Server DB. How do I also store the same data in MySQL parallelly? I cannot directly use some database connectors with ASP.Net since MySQL connectivity is not supported on 1and1 Windows hosting (biz account, no less!). What I thought of is to publish an RSS feed of entries in ASP.Net site and routinely scrape that data into MySQL on Linux host. It is an overkill, I know. Not efficient. I thought I would pick the best brains on SOF to get a different, efficient opinion. Thanks in advance guys...

• How do I safely Debug.Assert in ASP.NET?

  Asserts can't be caught. This is good because some errors I don't want to be wrapped in try/catch, at least not on the development server. But Asserts seem awefully dangerous. • Getting started with microcontroller programming

  I'm a fairly good programmer, knowledgeable in C, C++, Python, Ruby and PHP. I'd like to get started with microcontroller programming. I do know nothing about this topic. Microcontrollers are minimal computers on little circuit boards, right? I'm pretty new to electronics too, do I need to be an expert in it to do stuff with microcontrollers? What can I do with them? Would e.g.: A Pacman or Tetris game on an LCD be possible and not too hard? Where should I start? Basically I want to program something really small I can then take with me. This is my only real goal. Are microcontrollers the right thing for this, or are there better solutions? I'd like to do this for fun and as a hobby, I don't want to become a professional in it.

• How can an animator do animation targeted for the iPhone

  Hi, I'm working with an animator for the iPhone. The animator I'm working with isn't a programmer and has a background in Flash. (right now she's doing the animation in Flash and I need to convert to Objective C). For some it's ok because I can just use image frames, but there are more complex animation that would take longer for me to convert to Objective C. • Good book(s) for MMORPG design & implementation?

  I am a long time professional C/C++ programmer (mostly embedded systems) and a hobbyist windows & php hacker. Can anyone recommend a book(s) specifically aimed at designing and (hopefully) implementing an MMORPG? I don't need general how to design or how to code books. Maybe a really good generic games book, but I am not interested in 1st person shooters, I want to know what it takes to implement an MMORPG. Good books, maybe also good URLs. Thanks just searching eBay and Amazon threw up a whole slew of books. Amazon's customer reviews give me an idea of how good they are, and the overview tells me what areas they cover

• Make reading more comfortable for the eyes

  First, I read the topics about displays. Sadly the "BenQ FP241WZ" is a no go, for ~715 eur it's way too much. I would need some ideas about how could I make reading less tiring. Basically I didn't have this problem back then. But now, I'm reading some books, and also, have to read a lot a day. (A LOT). I look like some hardcore 0-24 gamer when I "finish" :). Think about things like.. background color (like I read 'dark yellow' color + black tint helps), font size, fonts (!) cleartype settings (should be off?) and so on. Display: BenQ E2200 HD (yeah cheap, eek, etc. Poor-man's LCD. :)) My CRT display is far away at the minute. So that is out of question. Also, my ThinkPad is here (T500), but I don't know about it's display. It comes with 1280x800 resolution and that's all I know (you can search back from that the FRU number, but I couldn't find it now). What could I do? (Or basically everyone in such a situation?)

• Chrome and its Spellcheck -- How Hard Would This Be To Implement

  From a programmer's perspective. The dictionary in chrome, Google's "own" browser, does not have the same dictionary as their search engine. Countless times I have right clicked on a poorly misspelled word only to have no correct spelling appear. I Google the word and almost 100% of the time it knows what I was trying to type. :) I realize there are probably very good reasons for this, but why can't Chrome simply Google for a word when you right click on it when it can't find a correct spelling. I am sometimes a bad speller and it would be really nice if the spell check in Chrome at least utilized Google's landmark product to provide more accurate word spelling lookups. How hard must this be to implement or are there other reasons you think they are not?

• Double Buffering with awt

  Is double buffering (in java) possible with awt? Currently, I'm aware that swing should not be used with awt, so I can't use BufferStrategy and whatnot. If double buffering is possible with awt, do I have to write the buffer by hand? Unlike swing, awt doesn't seem to have the same built-in double buffering capability. If I do have to write the code by hand, is there a good tutorial to look at? Or is it just easier/advisable for a novice programmer to use swing instead? Sorry about the multi-step question. • How to automate the finding of an M value along a route

  Kirk Kuykendall had given a script example a few years back in an ESRI forum http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93&f=996&t=88246&mc=4 as to how to find the M (measure) value of a point in a shapefile along a route when you clicked on the point. This is very handy, BUT..I have 1500 points that I need M values for. Is there a way to automate this type of thing? I need the M values for the points to create linear events on the route. Note: I am not a programmer, but have people who can help me out.

• How to get cheap version control?

  Hello, I'm a programmer, contractor, self experimenter and so on. I'd need to have cheap version control. I've been working with Subversion and recently with Mercurial. I've seen around many cheap hosting but, even if they are great (like BitBucket), many of them don't allow many private projects (1 or 2). Much of the code I need to keep on VC is not open, maybe because it is stuff I'm working on for clients, or maybe because it's code I usually need for my development, but it is not intended and usable as a open source project. Now, I've a cheap web hosting, with unlimited space and free mysql. I CAN'T install Mercurial or SVN on those machinese, but I was asking myself if is it there a way to use a common CVS with it, with "common" I mean something that has its good IDE plugins (Eclipse or Netbeans) that may avoid me to write commands by hand.   I'm not sure if 'architecture' is the correct term, but I've been looking for some articles online which talk about programming design and more about how best to use languages such as JavaScript in a code design sense rather than the actual syntax itself. I have found many websites but a lot seem to be very out dated, and I'm not sure what developments have taken place with JavaScript over the years so do not know how old is too old. If anybody could suggest some great websites, or maybe specific articles you think would be useful, that would be highly appreciated. I am a beginner programmer currently using JavaScript with XML and of course HTML & CSS, and I'm currently trying to get further into and learn more about web development.

  Hi I'm a BA / programmer type doing data analysis on a legacy system. I've been teaching myself SQL to help, but I've appeared to hit upon a problem bigger than my abilities. I have two tables (generalized for simplicity): Table Objects Object_PK Table Components Component_PK Object_FK Component_Type There are 100+ distinct values in Component_Type_Code. Given that any object can have N number of Components, how can I see which Component_Type(s) appear with other Component_Type(s)? For example, the following query tells me what component_types appear with the component_type 'Component_type_1': select component_type_code, count(*) from components where object_fk in ( select object_fk from components where component_type_code = 'component_type_1' ) group by component_type_code I'd like to get a query to show me all connections My apologies for the formatting. Any help is appreciated. I've looked at cube and rollup, but didn't know how to apply to this situtation.

• Converting PDF eBooks into a Kindle format

  Over the past couple of years I've amassed quite a collection of guides, tutorials and ebooks in PDF format. A lot of these are quite useful for work, especially PDF documentation, and rather than have to be at a computer every time I want to read how to do something in Sitecore or to read through a software testing ebook I'd like to do it on my brand-spanking-new Kindle. However, even though there is now a native PDF reader on the Kindle due to the nature of PDF's they are practically unreadable. The text doesn't wrap due to how PDF's are sized and so far after a bunch of Google searches I've yet to find a viable solution to get my PDF's converted into a readable Kindle format. Sometimes these books have code or pictures/tables in them, but most of the time they're text-heavy and to be honest I'd be surprised if there wasn't a free tool to handle the converting of PDF to one of the (seemingly many) Kindle formats. So, can anyone help me out with this? EDIT: I've tried Calibre, and have checked their forums to play with some of the advanced settings, yet the solutions available seem to be extremely poor, especially if the book you're attempting to read contains equations, code, or anything outside of plain text. I've also tried Amazon's conversion service, which wasn't much help with such documents. The best way I have found so far is to build the entire thing over again in ePub or RTF format and convert to MOBI from there. This works for text-heavy books with tables, but anything technical still isn't covered. Can anyone help with this?

So, felt I need to learn to code in OO PHP.... The problem is, having done code using functions for quite a long time, i just can't get my head to think in the OO way....   I've just come across this code snippet in some Exchange 2010 code and I was wondering if anyone knew why the programmer has done it this way. I've never seen an If statement formatted like this. • What tool/framework to use for technical documentation?

  We develop products and frameworks to be used with in our organization. I am looking for programmer friendly documentation tools. I have researched on few options sometime back but couldn't decide which one to use. I am looking for suggestions from the people who already used these tools. docbook: springframework and hibernate use this format and this looks good. but I believe they have customized the default xslt/stylesheet. Can I copy and use their xslt and css (ofcourse with colors and images changed). Can I integrate the doc generation using maven? wiki: this is not friendly to the technical document writers and the documentation doesn't look professional. versioning is also not possible I believe word docs: this is what we use currently but it is hard to link and reuse common documents. • OpenAL device, buffer and context relationship

  I'm trying to create an object oriented model to wrap OpenAL and have a little problem understanding the devices, buffers and contexts. From what I can see in the Programmer's Guide, there are multiple devices, each of which can have multiple contexts as well as multiple buffers. Each context has a listener, and the alListener*() functions all operate on the listener of the active context. (Meaning that I have to make another context active first if I wanted to change it's listener, if I got that right.) So far, so good. What irritates me though is that I need to pass a device to the alcCreateContext() function, but none to alGenBuffers(). How does this work then? When I open multiple devices, on which device are the buffers created? Are the buffers shared between all devices? What happens to the buffers if I close all open devices? (Or is there something I missed?)

• Getting "select permission denied" when using LINQ but my account is a sysadmin

  I have a console app that's geared to be automatically ran as a Scheduled Task. I use LINQ to SQL to pull some data out of the database, format it into a CSV and email it to a client. All of a sudden I am getting the error "SELECT permission denied for table", but the account I'm using to connect to the database (specified in my app.config file) has the "sysadmin" server role (bad programmer, I know; I'll get around to changing it to a better account later but I want to make sure it works first). I can connect directly to the SQL database using that very same account and query the table in question without a problem, it only seems to be when using the LINQ code. Any idea what would be causing this?
