• IE div width + scrollbar

  I have a modal UI in my web app that necessitates a fixed layout design. After much fussing, I decided absolutely positioned child elements was the way to go. However, I have one div that conditionally requires a vertical scrollbar (if there's too much content). When this scrollbar is added, the width of the div seems to vary between IE 7 and IE 8. IE8 standards mode: IE7 standards mode: I haven't even tested for IE 6, but I'm sure it's even funkier. What's the simplest, least painful way to address this to arrive at a consistent UI in all major browsers?

• Is a live internet connection required for push notification?

  This maybe a silly question, but I need confirmation and I have no one else to ask. I am trying to understand the implications of implementing my own push notification for android mobile devices. This requires a continuous TCP connection to a server, though most of the time it will be idle. My assumption is that, even when idle, for the server to be able to push data to the client through the TCP connection, an active internet connection will always be required, and if the connection is disrupted (i.e. the user switches the connection off) this push will no longer be possible. Is this assumption correct ?

  I'm implementing Bagwell's Ideal Hash Trie in Haskell. To find an element in a sub-trie, he says to do the following: Finding the arc for a symbol s, requires ?nding its corresponding bit in the bit map and then counting the one bits below it in the map to compute an index into the ordered sub-trie. What is the best way to do this? It sounds like the most straightforward way of doing this is to select the bits below that bit and do a population count on the resulting number. Is there a faster or better way to do this?

• References/walkthroughs for maintaining database schemas with Visual Studio 2010?

  I have Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 and SQL Server 2008 installed. I'm working with a populated database and want to modify various column types. SQL Server Management Studio requires me to drop tables to do this, and get pretty finicky given my moderate level of knowledge of SQL Server. However, I heard the new database project type supports changing the database schema to the desired format and it will handle creating and running all the scripts to implement the changes. I've created a VS2010 database project using the existing database as the source, but so far haven't had much luck figuring out the appropriate method to make the changes without getting an error. As a result, I'm looking for any reference info I can find on using VS2010's capabilities in this area. Any suggestions?

The current connection string I'm using in my web.config file is: <add name="AdventureWorksConnectionString2" connectionString="Data Source=SIDEKICK;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks;Persist Security Info=false; " providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> When I select Basic Authentication it pops up the warning: "The authentication option you have chosen results in passwords being sent over the network without data encryption..." How do I choose this authentication method and still send passwords over securely? So essentially I am looking for the most secure authentication method but that still requires users to input password?

• Making linq avoid using in memory filtering where possible

  Consider the these two LINQ2SQL data retrieval methods. The first creates a 'proper' SQL statement that filters the data, but requires passing the data context into the method. The second has a nicer syntax but loads the entire list of that accounts projects, then does in memory filtering. • Which Java Web Framework allows Cross-Domain Javascripting (http proxy) ?

  So just a quick intro, I am starting to explore Vaadin, and it's absolutely perfect. Previously, I was juggling PHP, Perl, Ruby, and Jquery for designing rich client web application. It didn't work out too well, as I've burnt out from trying to fix cross browser issues (aka get-it-to-work-on-IE-damn-it), handling server-side, client-side, and building a robust communication between the two tier had lot of code not related to application logic....by the time I was burnt out, only tiny bit of application logic was implemented. Vaadin seems like the answer to my problem as it only requires Java and built on top of GWT. However, I am curious how I can incorporate Cross-Domain Javascripting ? Back in LAMP environment, I had a CGI proxy script that loaded external URL, and injected JS into the proxy-loaded page. I used the CGI proxy script, as it rendered Javascript of the external URL well. Is there a class or package for Java or a specific Java web framework similiar to Vaadin that makes this possible ? • Deploy PHP website to client server without showing PHP files

  I asked a recent question regarding the use of readfile() for remotely executing PHP, but maybe I'd be better off setting out the problem to see if I'm thinking the wrong way about things, so here goes: I have a PHP website that requires users to login, includes lots of forms, database connections and makes use of $_SESSION variables to keep track of various things I have a potential client who would like to use the functionality of my website, but on their own server, controlled by them. They would probably want to restyle the website using content and CSS files local to their server, but that's a problem for later I don't want to show them my PHP code, since that's the value of what I'd be providing. I had thought to do this with calls to include() from the client's server to mine, which at least keeps variable scope intact, but many sites (and the PHP docs) seem to recommend readfile(), file_get_contents() or similar. Ideally I'd like to have a simple wrapper file on the client's server for each "real" one on my server. Any suggestions as to how I might accomplish what I need? Thanks, ColmF

• How do I delete an object from an Entity Framework model without first loading it?

  I am quite sure I've seen the answer to this question somewhere, but as I couldn't find it with a couple of searches on SO or google, I ask it again anyway... In Entity Framework, the only way to delete a data object seems to be MyEntityModel ent = new MyEntityModel(); ent.DeleteObject(theObjectToDelete); ent.SaveChanges(); However, this approach requires the object to be loaded to, in this case, the Controller first, just to delete it. Is there a way to delete a business object referencing only for instance its ID? If there is a smarter way using Linq or Lambda expressions, that is fine too. The main objective, though, is to avoid loading data just to delete it.

• Notepad++ Move Caret Outside Bracket

  I've searched everywhere and can't find an answer to something incredibly simple and useful for Notepad++. When using autoclose, the cursor gets stuck inside, which is good until I've finished typing the parameters. How do I get the caret to jump outside of the currently nested autoclosed element? Regardless of it being (), {}, [], "", '', ? CTRL+B does does something similar, but it goes to the inside of the left bracket first, and then to the outside of the right bracket, which is where I want to be. This only works for brackets though, not tags and qoutations Hitting CTRL+B twice is cumbersome and manually hitting "right arrow" requires too much hand motion while coding. And finally, is there anyway I can map this to "SHIFT+Space"?

• Save objects to a database?

  So far in my .Net coding adventures I've only had a need to save information to files. So I've used XmlSerializer and DataContractSerializer to serialize attributed classes to XML files. My next project, however, requires that I save and retrieve information from a SQL server database. I'm wondering what my options are for doing this. The current version of the app, which was not created by me, uses a lot of hard coded SQL commands. But now I'm trying to avoid doing anything where I have to read or write individual fields to or from the database or objects. I especially want to avoid a lot of hard coded SQL in my code. I like how the serializer classes just figure out how to read and write XML files based on the attributes and or public properties of the class. Is there something similar for a database rather then XML?

• Prevent Java from parsing the command line parameters

  Would like to make anapplication in Java that will not automatically parse parameters used on the command-line. Currently, java requires public static void main(string[]) as the entry point signature. I would like just a single string that I parse myself. Can this be done at all? Here's an example: java MyProgram.class Hello World I would want it to give me Hello World without requiring quotes around that string. I would even settle for java giving me the entire java MyProgram.class Hello World. I'm thinking this is something beyond Java and has more to do with the shell.

MS-Access DB. i do: INSERT INTO Orders (userId) VALUES (123)" what i want to retrieve is orderNumber from that row. its an auto-increment number. so i did: SELECT orderNumber FROM Orders WHERE userId=123 but since it is on the same page, the SELECT returns: Either BOF or EOF is True, or the current record has been deleted.   I have 1 result and which i will receive in Bank account, Based on that account i have to Put a balance to user account. How can you find the Handling cost from total tried 491.50 / 0.95 = 517.36 which is wrong ? It should be 500.00 (to my expectation) User balance requires 500.00 When 500.00 selected he gets 5% discount There is a handling cost for this ex: 1) Discount: 500.00 - 5% = 475.00 2) Handling cost: (475.00 x 0.034) + 0.35 = 16.50 3) Total: 475.00 + 16.50 = 491.50 So problem is from 491.50, i have to find atleast handling cost to get promised Balance. Any solution ? Cant figure it out myself...

  I'm developing a game that requires up to four iPhones or iPod Touch to connect each other to play in turns. My question is, how can I accomplish this via GameKit. I've read that using client/server sessions is the way of doing it. But I can't find any examples that would illustrate this. • Problem with httpContext.RewritePath on IIS 7

  I am using httpContext.RewritePath in Global.asax for som URLrewriting, and it works very well in my development environment on the Cassini server. But when I copy it to the production server, witch is a IIS 7 it isn't working. I have also tried to use Context.Server.TransferRequest but thne I get the error: "This operation requires IIS integrated pipeline mode." on both Cassini and IIS 7, and on IIS 7 the website is running in "Integreret" mode in the AppPool. I rewrite all urls on the website like /[The main menuname]/[pagename].aspx fx from /web/thesite.aspx?mainmenu=manager to /manager/thesite.aspx OR /web/theOtherSite.aspx?mainmenu=about to /about/theOtherSite.aspx And so on... • how to revert non-corrupted mssql database with stopat

  i have a good, working valid non-corrupted database in mssql that i want to revert to a point in time how is that done? the standard RESTORE command requires a full backup as a starting point, and then log backups thereafter. i cant understand why this must be done from a backup. if my db is good and the logs are OK, why cant i just revert with a STOPAT from the live logs in the db? one dba suggested that whenever i want to restore i should THEN make a log backup and then RESTORE with STOPAT. i believe it would work but sounds a little backwards any better ideas? thank you very much

  I have a model with a generic relation: TrackedItem --- genericrelation ---> any model I would like to be able to generically get, from the initial model, the tracked item. I should be able to do it on any model without modifying it. To do that I need to get the content type and the object id. Getting the object id is easy since I have the model instance, but getting the content type is not: ContentType.object.filter requires the model (which is just content_object.__class__.__name__) and the app_label. I have no idea of how to get in a reliable way the app in which a model is. For now I do app = content_object.__module__.split(".")[0], but it doesn't work with django contrib apps.

• Changing tab indicators to a view in a tab widget?

  Hi, I have a layout which requires a tab widget containing two tabs. Ideally I'd like to have each tab just be a completely flat colored rectangle, side by side. Almost exactly like the buttons you see at the top of this web page titled: "Questions" | "Tags" | "Users" | "Badges" | "Unanswered" but without the whitespace in between. I'd like to have the highlighted tab have a brighter background color. Is this possible using the tab widget? I know in 1.6+ there's a method to specify a view for the tabs themselves, but can I achieve this tight look, or should I just roll my own? Thanks

• Creating a folder inside Mac OS App

  I want a an app that is "self-contained" (I don't know if i use the right word. "putting the app into trash bin will remove everything" is what I meant). But the app requires some resources to run. I usually put those resources into a folder. I want to move those resources into the App folder ( package contents). Can I do that? Is it a good practice to do that? When I test the app directly running from Xcode, the App runs fine. But if i run it from finder, the app will say fails to create resources folder because permission denied. I checked the app's folder permission - User(me) has read/write access. I am wondering what is causing this different behavior. The last option is to use Application Support folder, but I don't want to leave trails when user deletes the app. Can someone help me out here?

• Is there a way to create my own "push pins" for a image without using Google Maps API?

  I am interested in working with friends via the internet on a fantasy world map. One of the things I want to do is host an image of the map online and allow us to insert push pins into the image that would then be associated with infoboxes. I don't want to resort to using the Google Map APIs mainly because this is something I want to just share among friends and not publicly. Terms of usage for the APIs state we would need to make the implementation available for everyone. This seems simple enough yet I've no idea how to do this. I looked into image maps, but that requires constant updates to the html markup itself. I just want to insert/delete/edit pushpins and infoboxes on the image and through our site itself. Can someone help me get started?

  I had a discussion with a colleague of mine about the XML processing instructions node (I'm talking about this = <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>). I believe that for something to be called "valid XML", it requires a processing instructions node. My colleague states that the processing instruction node is optionnal, since the default encoding is UTF-8 and the version is always 1.0. This make sense, but what does the standard says ? In short, given the following file: <books> <book id="1"><title>Title</title></book> </book> Can we say that: It is valid XML ? It is a valid XML node ? It is a valid XML document ?   I'm trying to do a join like this using fluent nhibernate: Id(x => x.Id); Map(x => x.SourceSystemRecordId,"sourceSystemRecord_id"); Then Join("cat.tbl_SourceSystemRecords", SourceSystemRecords); But, it seems I don't have a way to specify the column I want to join with from the first table, in this case I need to join on SourceSystemRecordId and not on Id Is there any way I can specify this? I tried References() but that requires me to create an object for this relationship, what I need is to aggregate the columns in sourcesystem records to the ones in the main table.

• Raising hard limit on RLIMIT_NOFILE system-wide on Linux

  We need to raise RLIMIT_NOFILE when running memcached, as we're hitting the default hard limit (1024). However, raising a hard limit requires root, and for various reasons we don't want to have to run memcached or its containing shell as root. Right now we happily run it as a non-root user. Is there a way to raise the hard limit for RLIMIT_NOFILE system-wide, so that we can continue to run memcached as non-root and simply raise the soft limit? This is RedHat Linux with 2.6 kernel.
