• Structuring database for multi-object "activity" and "following" functionalities

  I am working on a web application which operate with different types of objects such as user, profiles, pages etc. All objects have unique object_id. When objects interact it may produce "activity", such as user posting on the page or profile. Activity may be related to multiple objects through their object_id. Users may also follow "objects" and they need to be able to see stream of relevant activity. Could you provide me with some data structure suggestions which would be efficient and scalable? My goal is to show activity limited to the objects which user is following I am not limited by relational databases. Update As I'm getting advices on ORM and how index things, I'd like to again, stress my question. According to my current design model the database structure looks like this: As you can see - it's quite easy to implement database like that. Activity and Follower tables do contain much larger amount of records than the upper level but it's tolerable. But when it comes for me to create a "timeline" table, it becomes a nightmare. For every user I need to reference all the object activities which he follows. In terms of records it easily gets out of control. Please suggest me how to change this structure to avoid timeline creation and also be abel to quickly retrieve activity for any given user. Thanks.

• C++ and SDL Trouble Creating a STL Vector of a Game Object

  I am trying to create a Space Invaders clone using C++ and SDL. The problem I am having is in trying to create Waves of Enemies. I am trying to model this by making my Waves a vector of 8 Enemy objects. My Enemy constructor takes two arguments, an x and y offset. My Wave constructor also takes two arguments, an x and y offset. What I am trying to do is have my Wave constructor initialize a vector of Enemies, and have each enemy given a different x offset so that they are spaced out appropriately. • Object array updates one instance repeatedly [on hold]

  I'm making a 2D shooter, and the player object holds an array of bullets that represent how many shots the player can have on screen at once. At least, this is what I'm trying for. What's happening is that each time any of the objects in the array is called, it seems to update a single object in memory. So, if I fire and then fire again, the object "starts over" from where I shot from and moves twice as fast. I've spent weeks trying to fix this and I've managed nothing. Hopefully another pair of eyes will see something I've missed.   I am writing a job to migrate documents to SharePoint 2010 and need to set Author and Editor to the original user for the Source System. The way I have done it was dim ImportFile as SPFile dim ImportFolder as SPFolder dim InternalOperatorUser as SPUser ... ImportFile = ImportFolder.Files.Add(ImportFileName, contents, CreatedBy, ModifiedBy, TimeCreated, TimeModified) ... ImportFile.Item("Author") = InternalOperatorUser ImportFile.Item("Editor") = InternalOperatorUser ImportFile.Item.UpdateOverwriteVersion() ImportFile.Item.SystemUpdate(False) ... That is working fine and it is setting Author and Editor on the ListItem level correctly SPFile.Item("Author") SPFile.Item("Editor") BUT (!!!) SharePoint also stores the Editor on the Attachment level which some tools use as display value instead. This value is set to the system user who is running that script SPFile.Versions.Item(1).CreatedBy This field is readonly. Is there a way to modifiy it so I can set InternalOperatorUser to be the Creator for the Attachment as well. SharePoint 2010 Web only uses the values on the ListItem Attribites which are fine but there are thrid party tools that use the ones on the Attahcment level. Using SharePoint Explorer I could confirm that CreatedBy is set to be the system user. Does anyone here know how to change this value as well? Thanks, Wolfgang

• Access denied when trying to read information about SharePoint groups

  I am trying to get the membership of a group in WSS 3.0. I am doing this in an elevated permissions block. Here is the code: SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate() { using (SPSite site = new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.ID)) { using (SPWeb rootWeb = site.RootWeb) { SPGroup gAdmins = rootWeb.SiteGroups["Admins"]; } } }); I get taken to the "access denied" SharePoint screen when I run this code. The group exists. The identity of the application pool for the web application is in the dbo role in the content database. The code works on my development server, but not on another server, which leads me to believe there is something wrong with the permissions or configuration on this server, maybe something in dcomcnfg?   Can you please explain to me why th code complain saying that Samdat is not found? • Objective-C As A First OOP Language?

  I am just finishing the second semester of my CS degree. So far I learned C, all the fundamental algorithms and data structures (e.g., searching, sorting, linked lists, heaps, hash tables, trees, graphs, etc). Next year we'll start with OOP, using either Java or C++. Recently I got some ideas for some iPhone apps and got itchy to start working on them. However I heard some bad things about Objectice-C in the past, so I am wondering if learning it as my first OOP language could be a problem. Not to mention that I think it will be hard to find books/online courses that teach basic OOP concepts using Objective-C to illustrate the concepts (as opposed to books using Java or C++, which are plenty), so this could be another problem. In summary: should I start learning Objective-C and OOP concepts right now by my own, or wait one more semester until I learn Java/C++ at university and then jump into Objective-C?   After learning functional programming in Haskell and F#, the OOP paradigm seems ass-backwards with classes, interfaces, objects. Which aspects of FP can I bring to work that my co-workers can understand? Are any FP styles worth talking to my boss about retraining my team so that we can use them? Possible aspects of FP: Immutability Partial Application and Currying First Class Functions (function pointers / Functional Objects / Strategy Pattern) Lazy Evaluation (and Monads) Pure Functions (no side effects) Expressions (vs. Statements - each line of code produces a value instead of, or in addition to causing side effects) Recursion Pattern Matching Is it a free-for-all where we can do whatever the programming language supports to the limit that language supports it? For the first version of my solution, I deploy a document library with a custom document set content type and then upgrade the solution so I index the application number column. Now , I will create a new version of the solution so that it will remove the threshold of the list. You can download the solution here. Once you extract your solution, the first version is in the original folder. In order to deploy the original solution, you need to run the sitecreation.ps1 in the script folder. The version 1.1 will be in the Upgrade folder and version 1.2 will be in the Upgrade2 folder. You need to make the following changes to the existing solution. 1. Table, Tree, PagingColumn, SelectionColumn, SparkLineColumn, TimeColumn. currently they're flat under app/view like this: app/view/Table app/view/Tree app/view/PagingColumn ... I thought about restructuring it, because the Trees and Tables use the columns, but there are some columns, which only work in a tree, some who work in trees and tables and in the future there are probably some who only work in tables, I don't know. My first idea was like this: app/view/Table app/view/Tree app/view/column/PagingColumn app/view/column/SelectionColumn app/view/column/SparkLineColumn app/view/column/TimeColumn But since the SelectionColumn is explicitly for trees, I have the fear that future developers could get the idea of missuse them. But how to restructure it probably? • Secure an Application/Software by expiration with Date?

  I have been working on some software application and I update them every 6 months. Currently, the way I track the date is by extracting the date from the system when the user installes the application, encrypt it and store it in a file locally. Whenever the application is started, it checks if 6 months have passed, then it works or it doesn't, in which case it shows an error message telling the user to update. I wonder whether there is a better way to do this. Any comments or suggestions would be highly appreciated
