• What is the fastest RAID in practise?

  I'm going to be rebuilding my server, and I want much faster access to my data. I've used RAID 1 and 0 in the past, and decided upon RAID 10 (dedicated RAID card). Then someone told me to use RAID 5+0, then someone else told me to use RAID 6+0. Assuming the Hardware RAID Card supports each level, what is currently the FASTEST RAID available, given x number of hard drives? Reliability is now another factor, and I am willing to spend money on new drives if a drive (or multiple) fail. I simply want to know what the fastest RAID level is, along with some reliability for recovering from a failure

• Can there be multiple monitors with these video cards and setup

  I have a Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 laptop running windows 7 Ultimate with one VGA port and one HDMI port. It has one Intel HD Graphics family card and one NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. Right now I have one monitor running via the VGA port, and also the basic laptop monitor. When I look at the monitor setup, I see one unused video card available. Can I have another monitor via the HDMI port? If I cannot run three monitors, is there some way I could make a large "single" desktop that extends over two monitors? For the sake of celerity, maybe something like having a virtual machine window that extends over two monitors. Could this maybe come from third party software?

  Hello, I successfully installed Ubuntu onto my usb hard drive. However, I'm not sure what the issue is with my internet. I'm not familiar enough with ubuntu to know whether this is a problem with recognizing my wireless card or with my internet, etc. So I suppose my question is, how do I tell whether it's recognizing my wireless card? (Network manager isn't showing any wireless signals, though I wasn't sure if it was supposed to. ) And, if it's not working, how do I go about troubleshooting that issue? Thanks!

• Xen VGA passthrough: is it possible to have dual GPU's with single monitor

  I hate dual-booting between Windows when I want to play a game and Linux when I need to work. I don't fancy running Linux in a VM and Wine almost never works for me. So, I'm thinking about buying a new mainboard and CPU that is compatible with Xen's VGA passthrough and HVM virtualization. I want to be able to switch between the Linux Dom0 and Windows DomU with ease, but the problem is I need two GPU's and have only one monitor. Right now I have a nVidia GTX 260 in my PC, but I also have a Radeon 4850 sitting in my closet that I was going to sell. My question is, can I salvage the Radeon card to run the Dom0 and have the nVidia card run the DomU while having some kind of device/software to connect them a single monitor? Power supply and airflow issues aside. If not, what would you suggest? Is this even possible?

  This question may sound weird to some of you but I have never really used cloud and above all I'm still beginner in the web development and would be really thankful if someone could answer few of my question though they may sound weird So I would like to deploy simple website to Amazon, however, I'm concerned about bandwidth as they charge 0.12GB and I'm not able to set budget limit. My problem is that I wouldn't like to pay for 1000GB of bandwidth if someone for some reason decides to download one file constantly So could some of you, who have experience with amazon, tell what happens if my app is able to handle (say 50 req/sec 30kb/page) does that mean that in the worst case I would have to pay req * sec * min * hours * days * page size 50 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 * 30kb = 3888GB

• Resolution of monitor is not supported by motherboard

  I have Desktop with configuration Pentium 4,945 intel chipset board,dual booting with win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 (no graphics card) Recently i purchased Dell IN2020M 20" with native resolution of 1600x900 but my display allow maximum of 1024x768 because of this when i play any video in full screen mode it doesn't play smoothly or frames are refreshed jerkily I have tried updating my VGA driver but its doesn't helping me much. Is there any way to solve this problem ? 1if i want to replace monitor what maximum resolution should i buy ? 2if i want to upgrade(graphics card/motherboard) my desktop what is the minimum configuration to support the current system. • RAID setup for maximizing data retention and read speed

  My goals are simple: maximize data retention safety, and maximize read speeds. My first instinct is to do a a three drive software RAID 1. I have only used fakeraid RAID 1 in the past and it was terrible (would have led to data loss actually if it weren't for backups) Would you say software raid 1 or a cheap actual hardware raid card? OS will be linux. Could I start with a two drive raid 1 and add a third drive on the fly? Can I hot swap? Can I pull one of the drives and throw it into a new machine and be able to read all the data? I do not want a situation where I have a raid card fail and have to try and find the same chipset in order to read my data (which i am assuming can happen) Please clarify any points on which it sounds like I have no idea what I am talking about, as I am admittedly inexperienced here. (My hardest lesson was fakeraid lol) Thanks!

• Best way to "stream" music / video to my HDTV from my pc?

  My requirement is simple: I have a laptop and a desktop at home that I often use for various media (music, videos etc.) and I want to know what the best (quickest, most seamless, best quality etc) solution for sending this media to my HDTV (and connected sound system). An example would be I'm listening to some music from youtube on my laptop in my living room and want to quickly send it to my tv (which has a sound system) so that I don't have to listen to it through my laptop. I mainly use linux (but a windows dependent solution would be ok too if its the best option). I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Oh and a wireless solution would be best.

Then I tried adding everything to the default fetch group, but that just generated warnings about GAE not supporting joins. I tried setting the fetch plan's max fetch depth to -1, but that didn't do it. • Cisco 1760 T1 Setup

  My 1760 has a WIC1-T1 card in Slot 0 and the slot 0 "OK" light is lit. When the router boots it shows that it sees the T1 card. I would like to configure my T1. I received the following details from my ISP: * Removed IP's IP Version: IPv4 Router Interface: edge1.mia1 -- t1-2/1/0:2:13 -- Switch Port: Vlan: WAN Network: 4.59.?.?/30 Level3 Side: 4.59.?.?   Hi, this is an intermitent problem in my Sony Vaio model PCG-5K1L. I keep on getting a "No Audio Output Device is installed" when hovering my loudspeaker icon in Windows Vista. I have tried System Device Manager Sound Realtek High Definition Album Update Driver Software. The update process went through, but nothing happens. Still Vista does not seem to recognize my audio software. The strange part is that out of nothing my sound card can resume working to stop again hours later... If someone has any clues to solve this, please, help. Thanks a lot.

• Which has a faster data transfer rate? WIFI (tablet or cell phone, not LTE) or MicroSD (Class 10)?

  Which of the two methods of dta transfer trasfers data at a faster rate for smartphones and tablets? Standard WIFI, or MicroSD Cards? I wonder if it would be actually faster to access data on external storage then it would be to have the MicroSD card in my smartphone or tablet. Currently I have a class 10 32GB MicroSD card in my cell phone. I am looking to get the new Google Nexus tablet but it does not offer expandable internal storage. I wonder if that's really a detriment; because if WIFI is faster than MicroSD, then it would matter almost none at all that you couldn't expand the storage internally. If the case is that WIFI is faster, and people caught onto this, then people could save a lot of money on lower memory ipads/iphones/ipods, tablets, and smartphones!

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • How to check the OS is running on bare metal and not in virtualized environment created by BIOS?

  Is there any software available as a Linux, *BSD, or Windows program or boot-image to check (or guess with good probability) the environment an operating system is loaded onto is genuine bare metal and not already virtualized? Given recent information from various sources, including supposed to be E.Snowden leaks, I'm curious about the security of my PC-s, even about those that don't have on-board BMC. How it could be possible and why? See for example Blue Pill, and a number of papers. With a little assistance from network card firmware, which is also loadable on popular card models, such hypervisor could easily spy on me resulting in PGP, Tor, etc. exercises futile.

• Windows freezes, showing a random color or pattern

  I have a PC with windows 7, and I'm experiencing random freezes with increasing frequency. After some time (from 30 minutes to a few hours) the screen will shows a random color or pattern (vertical lines) and nothing works anymore, I need to reboot manually. I've checked the events log, but nothing is shown except for the unexpected reboot. I've tested the RAM with Memtest86+ 4.20, and the graphics card with FurMark 1.10.3, no errors have been found. I've updated the graphic drivers and openned the case to remove dust, but the issue is still there. Also, the problem doesn't seem to arise when I'm playing games fullscreen, but when I'm surfing the web, using itunes, or coding. My hardware is as follows : intel core i5 750 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card, ASUSTeK P7P55D motherboard, two 2Gb KINGSTON DDR3 ram sticks, 2 SATA hard drives, a Netgear dongle for wifi.

• How to prevent dual booted OSes from damaging each other?

  For better compatibility and performance in games I'm thinking about installing Windows additionally to Linux. I have security concerns about this, though. Note: "Windows" in the remaining text includes not only the OS but also any software running on it. Regardless of whether it comes included or is additionally installed, whether it is started intentionally or unintentionally (virus, malware). Is there an easy way to achieve the following requirements: Windows MUST NOT be able to kill my linux partition or my data disk neither single files (virus infection) nor overwriting the whole disk Windows MUST NOT be able to read data disk (- extra protection against spyware) Linux may or may not have access to the windows partition both Linux and Windows should have full access to the graphics card this rules out desktop VM solutions for gaming I want the manufacturer's windows graphics card driver Regarding Windows to be unable to destroy my linux install: this is not just the usual paranoia, that has happened to me in the past. So I don't accept "no ext4 driver" as an argument. Once bitten, twice shy. And even if destruction targeted at specific (linux) files is nearly impossible, there should be no way to shred the whole partition. I may accept the risk of malware breaking out of a barrier (e.g. VM) around the whole windows box, though. Currently I have a system disk (SSD) and a data disk (HDD), both SATA. I expect I have to add another disk. If i don't: even better. My CPU is a Intel Core i5, with VT-x and VT-d available, though untested. Ideas I've had so far: deactivate or hide other HDs until reboot at low level possible? can the boot loader (grub) do this for me? tiny VM layer: load windows in a VM that provides access to almost all hardware, except the HDs any ready made software solution for this? Preferably free. as I said: the main problem seems to be to provide full access to the graphics card hardware switch to cut power to disks commercial products expensive and lots of warnings against cheap home built solutions preferably all three hard disks with one switch (one push) mobile racks - won't wear of daily swapping be a problem?

• Can I use VT-D with a windows host for a VM?

  I've got a fairly beefy gaming system that I also run occational virtual machines on. It runs windows 8 and the built in hyper V virtual machine software at the moment and has a core i7 3770 (which unlike the unlocked model, should support VT-D), an Asus P8Z77V and a gforce 660 video card(also asus). I figure that if I could use VT-D I could add a cheap dedicated 3d card for a VM, in case I wanted somewhat more than the 'basics'. I know KVM and Xen support this to some level on linux, but can I do so on windows? I'm open to switching VM software if need be.

  Well this is the first Laptop I have ever worked on with a dedicated video card. So, there is no video going to the laptops monitor or to an external. Ripped it apart found the gpu and now am stuck. I cant decide if its the gpu that has gone out or the motherboard. Any one have any suggestions? If it were a desktop I would throw in one of my spare video cards. Mainly I don't want to order the video card and eat the $50 if its the motherboard.

• Motherboard with embedded hdmi problems with Windows 8 Consumer Preview (64bit)

  I'm specifically referring to GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX with a Core 2 Duo chip. This computer is connected to a Sharp Aquous TV using HDMI. It all worked fine with Windows 7 64 bit. In Device Manager I see GeForce 9400 and have installed the latest NVidia drivers (295.73 WHQL). However, when I click on the change the screen resolution to 1920x1080, I see that Windows 8 thinks that it's using some other graphics card with Microsoft Basic Display Driver. This was made clear, when I tried to launch the NVidia tools and it claimed that the current monitor (in this case my TV) wasn't attached to the GeForce 9400 card. In Device Manager, there's a "Coprocessor" and "Unknown device" without drivers, but I've no idea what they are. I've run the original CD that the motherboard came with no success. Any ideas?

• What is the @ sign on the end of file permission on terminal?

  I have a sound file in my app that the iPhone does not play. After checking other problems I checked the file permission in terminal. What I can see is that the file permission of this file has a- @ at the end of it. I don't know if that is the problem but this is the only difference from the other sound files that plays fine. What is this sign ? Could it cause a problem ? • HDMI resolution limited to 1920 x 1080?

  Monitor is a Dell 3008wfp. Very nice. Max resolution 2560 x 1600. Video card is an ATI Radeon HD 4350. I like it because it was cheap and is fanless. (Noise bugs me.) I would like to switch from DVI to HDMI, but when I use HDMI, the resolution drops to 1920 x 1080. Do I need to change out my video card to get the full resolution? How can I pick one that will do the max resolution?

• Windows 7/8 can't connect to an N Router

  I have a router running OpenWRT backfire, with N and A/B/G being broadcast. A linux laptop, and a Mac laptop can see the N network and connect to it (or at least they could last weekend). But there is now a Windows 7 Desktop with a B/G/N wireless card, and a Windows 8 Laptop with a B/G/N wireless card that can't see the N network only the B/G broadcast. The B/G and N have different SSID's and Encryption ( WEP and WPA2 PSK respectively ). The N SSID isn't even visible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot further? • Stream computer screen to TV via network instead of a USB wireless link

  I want to stream my computer screen (not just video or a limited amount of content) to my TV via the network. I know there are wireless devices that use USB to tranfer the screen to the TV. However, these are limited to a short distance. What I want to do is stream the data via the network so I can be anywhere within the network and have the data shown on the tv. I am looking for video and sound to transfer. I want the entire computer screen to transfer just like when you connect the computer to the tv via VGA or HDMI and the sound out using the 3.5mm plug. I have been unable to find a unit that allows for the entire computer screen to transfer via the network. I just find the ability to stream video. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with a quad processor and 16 GB of memory so I have the power to handle the transfer. My tv is hdtv.

• Macbook not connecting to WIFI

  I have been having this problem all week. My Macbook aluminium can't see my wifi network. I have changed the channel to one that isn't being used by neighbours and my iphone picks it up straight away. In other words, the router is fine. It's just the macbook can't see it. This is driving me nuts if anyone can help... My airport card details...
