• Windows 8 switch user is very slow

  I recently upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7. One major annoyance is how slow the "switch user" command is. In Windows 7 switching users was fairly fast. I've got an SSD drive with pretty good hardware, so I'm suspecting it's something with Windows 8, either a defect, or the fact that I upgraded from Windows 7 instead of doing a clean install. Anybody have this problem? My wife is complaining enough about Windows 8 and this is one of the biggest complaints.

• How can I change the default program installation directory in Windows 7?

  Windows 7 is installed on my C drive, which is quite small. I am very tired of instructing new programs to put their files on my larger D drive during installation; I would like to change the default drive. This article says that you can use a registry hack, but I am giving Microsoft the benefit of the doubt and naively assuming that a configuration option exists somewhere. It's 2010... do I really have to hack my registry to make a simple tweak like this? Also, there's a ServerFault question that explains how to move the "Users" directory and create a symlink, which could also work. However, at the moment I have some apps in C:\Program Files, some apps in C:\Program Files (x86), and some apps in the corresponding folders on D:\, so it would be a hassle. Also, my small OS boot drive is a 10k RPM WD Raptor, and I feel like that probably gives a speed boost to apps installed on it that need to read & write to their directories a bunch. I wonder if it actually matters.

  I need advice on whether there is an application for generating cross tables. I would imagine it so that I entered at the beginning of team names. Subsequently I wrote results, but always one and the second correct field would enrolled opposite result. I want it to count the total score etc. .. I hope I have expanded well. • Setup Web Applications on Cisco ASA 9.1

  I've been looking around the Cisco ASA administration screen with our network admin and haven't found the location where Web Applications can be setup. This seems like it should be a pretty straight forward procedure, especially if I just want to add a global application and not segment out by groups. I've looked through the docs, but they are a mess and answer most questions except for this. If you're going to post a RTFM answer, at least please provide link and location because I have looked. This is the location I'm looking to setup web applications on the clientless web VPN.

• Mac app to apply certain settings based on selected location (profile)?

  When my MacBook is connected to my Thunderbolt Display, I want WiFi to be turned off, Bluetooth to be turned on and the screen brightness to be at max. On the road I want WiFi to be turned on, Bluetooth to be turned off and the screen brightness to be somewhere in the middle. It would be easy if there was an application that would let me create several profiles (like 'Home' and 'On the road'), which I could easily select (from Dashboard or the menu bar). The profile settings would then be applied instantly. Does an application like this exist?

• What apps can you only get on Mac and not Windows?

  What apps do you absolutely have to use a Mac to run, and there are no decent Windows PC equivalent? This is not a religious war. Please be specific and practical It doesn't have to be a direct 1-2-1 comparison, but overall usefulness to the task I'll start off with a few: KeyNote -- the animations are quite cool and not available in PowerPoint iTune's photo sync -- on Windows it makes copy of all the photos you want to sync, effectively double the space taken up by your photos. On a Mac it's easier as long as you use iPhoto Keychain -- a centralized password manager tied to the OS. The benefit of this is you don't have to set a Master Password (like Firefox) which you need to enter when starting the browser. And it doesn't reveal your password (like Chrome, which makes no effort in hiding the password you have stored in Options) Time Machine -- 0-configuration backup in the background. Easy interface for restoring a file, or even just a contact in the address book. Text-to-speech -- works in any program, and sounds better than Windows computer voice Quick View -- press space bar to preview a file. Windows95 had quick view, but was removed.

• How to know which protocol is used in data transfer and inspect that data?

  I've a .net application for windows. This application transfers a lot of data to and from a particular server on a fix port no 8888. I tried 'Tcpview' but couldn't figure out anything useful. I only figured that it uses 'tcp' connection. Is there a way to know which protocol is used for data transfer (I think port no 8888 is not specific port so not helpful)? How exactly my machine makes connection to this server? Is it telnet/http etc or what? How can I inspect the actual data which is being transferred? If data is encrypted, is it possible to know encryption method on client side (without reverse engineering)? Thanks.

• A "quick" vector editor (SVG) for Linux (for annotating images?)

  I often need to take a bitmap (.png) image, and draw some lines or text on top of it, and possibly export a new, thusly "annotated" image. I know I can basically do all this in inkscape - but inkscape is a complex program, and it needs almost a minute to start up properly on my PCs. So I was thinking - is there something like a "mini" vector editor for Linux, which would start up fast, and allow me to: Right-click, open an image in this editor program The program scales the active "document"/"window size" to the size of the image I can zoom in/zoom out (and possibly crop) the image I can add at least lines, boxes and text in different colors? A bonus for me would be to have the overlay graphics saved as SVG format, say with the same filename as the image - as in, "image.png.svg" being saved in the same directory where the original "image.png" is located (thus allowing opening and editing these "annotations" further, either in this editor, or possibly in inkscape). And another bonus would be the export of the annotated image to a bitmap. Anyone know about anything like this?

Mainly at the annual German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference also known as SQL-Server & ASP.NET Conference in Frankfurt. • Loading a Template From a User Control

  What if you wanted to load a template (ITemplate property) from an external user control (.ascx) file? Yes, it is possible; there are a number of ways to do this, the one I'll talk about here is through a type converter. You need to apply a TypeConverterAttribute to your ITemplate property where you specify a custom type converter that does the job. This type converter relies on InstanceDescriptor. • Add a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to the Microsoft Robocopy Command Line Tool

  Robocopy, or “Robust File Copy,” is a command line directory replication tool from Microsoft. It is available as part of Windows 7 and Vista as a standard feature, and was available as part of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit. NOTE: For Windows XP, you can obtain Robocopy by downloading the resource kit. Robocopy allows you to setup simple or advanced backup strategies. It provides such features as multi-threaded copying, mirroring or synchronization mode, automatic retry, and the ability to resume the copying process. If you are comfortable with using command line tools, you can run Robocopy directly on the command line using the command syntax and options. You can also download the command line reference and usage notes for Robocopy as a PDF file. If you are more comfortable using a graphical user interface, or GUI, rather than the command line, there are a couple of options for adding a GUI to the Robocopy command line tool, making it easier to use. • DRM Tallyrand - The New User Interface

  I received word recently that the Tallyrand (11.1.2.0) build is out of our hands. I'm not sure when it will hit eDelivery, but if it hasn't already it should happen soon. For this post, I want to really quickly show the new user interface. The login screen: When you login, you are browsing versions and hierarchies. Note that Unicode is fully supported: The UI attempts to provide context-sensitive links where possible; notice here that an unloaded version is selected, so the UI shows a link. Clicking the link automatically brings up this Load Version dialog. This same thing applies elsewhere in the UI when you attempt to perform an action with an unloaded version: Here is browsing a hierarchy, with the property grid and context menu displayed (though you can hide the property grid anytime you like to provide more room): Worried about drag and drop? Don't! We support it even though this is a browser app. Also notice the Relationships feature on the right displaying a node's ancestors: Where possible, we try to present the available options, rather than just throwing up an "OK/Cancel" dialog (which most users never read anyway): Context-sensitive shortcuts automatically fill-in the context based on the currently selected node. For example, if you want to run a query using the selected node as the root, you can just click that query in the Shortcuts tab. In this screenshot, clicking Model After would model the selected node: This is just for starters. There is much more to cover, on both the client and server. For example, all communication channels are now configurable (no more DCOM). You can pick the ports, the encoding (binary or XML), and the transport mechanism (TCP, TCP over SSL, or SOAP over HTTP). • MySQL – Introduction to User Defined Variables

  MySQL supports user defined variables to have some data that can be used later part of your query. You can save a value to a variable using a SELECT statement and later you can access its value. Unlike other RDBMSs, you do not need to declare the data type for a variable. The data type is automatically assumed when you assign a value. A value can be assigned to a variable using a SET command as shown below SET @server_type:='MySQL'; When you above command is executed, the value, MySQL is assigned to the variable called @server_type. Now you can use this variable in the later part of the code. Suppose if you want to display the value, you can use SELECT statement. SELECT @server_type; The result is MySQL. Once the value is assigned it remains for the entire session until changed by the later statements. So unlike SQL Server, you do not need to have this as part the execution code every time. (Because in SQL Server, the variables are execution scoped and dropped after the execution). You can give column name as below SELECT @server_type AS server_type; You can also SELECT statement to DECLARE and SELECT the values for a variable. • cannot get upstart to run user job

  I am trying to get upstart start a user job during the boot of my machine. I have my conky.conf upstart config file in my $HOME/.init directory. Wenn I run "start conky" I get this error: dre@dre-laptop:~$ start conky start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.76" (uid=1000 pid=2843 comm="start conky ") interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply="0" destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init") dre@dre-laptop:~$ I (think I) know that this error has to do with the d-bus system (authentification). • SQL SERVER – Using RAND() in User Defined Functions (UDF)

  Here is the question I received in email. “Pinal, I am writing a function where we need to generate random password. While writing T-SQL I faced following issue. Everytime I tried to use RAND() function in my User Defined Function I am getting following error: Msg 443, Level 16, State 1, Procedure RandFn, Line 7 Invalid use of a side-effecting operator ‘rand’ within a function. Here is the simplified T-SQL code of the function which I am using: CREATE FUNCTION RandFn() RETURNS INT AS BEGIN DECLARE @rndValue INT SET @rndValue = RAND() RETURN @rndValue END GO I must use UDF so is there any workaround to use RAND function in UDF.” Here is the workaround how RAND() can be used in UDF. The scope of the blog post is not to discuss the advantages or disadvantages of the function or random function here but just to show how RAND() function can be used in UDF. RAND() function is directly not allowed to use in the UDF so we have to find alternate way to use the same function. This can be achieved by creating a VIEW which is using RAND() function and use the same VIEW in the UDF. Here is the step by step instructions. Create a VIEW using RAND function. CREATE VIEW rndView AS SELECT RAND() rndResult GO Create a UDF using the same VIEW. CREATE FUNCTION RandFn() RETURNS DECIMAL(18,18) AS BEGIN DECLARE @rndValue DECIMAL(18,18) SELECT @rndValue = rndResult FROM rndView RETURN @rndValue END GO Now execute the UDF and it will just work fine and return random result. SELECT dbo.RandFn() GO In T-SQL world, I have noticed that there are more than one solution to every problem. Is there any better solution to this question? • "Viral" license that only blocks legal actions of user and developer against each other

  I was thinking a lot about software licensing lately, because I would like to do some coding. I'm not an expert in all those licenses, so I came up with my own idea, and before I will put in on paper, I would like to make sure that I didn't reinvent a wheel, so maybe I would be able to use something that exists. Main idea behind my license is to guarantee freedom of use the software, but not "freedom to" (positive) (e.g. freedom to having source code), but "freedom from" (negative) (strictly from legal actions against you). It would be "viral" copyleft license. You would be able to without fear do everything you want with the software (and binaries e.g. reverse engineering), as long as You will include information about author and/or authors, and all derivative works will be distributed with the same license. I'm not interested in anything that would restrict a freedom of company to do something like "tivoization". I'm just trying to accomplish something that would block any legal actions of user and developer, targeted against each other, with the exception of basic attribution. Does exist something like that?

  I have a website that basically shows a lot of locations worldwide on a Google Maps like interface. The map itself is built using the Leaflet library and Open Street Map tiles. In the map, I show markers at each location I have. There is a popup window when I click on a marker that shows additional information and contains links to "detail" pages for this location. I fetch the location data for the viewpoint from an AJAX call from my server, so the additional information is not available in the HTML page itself. The detail pages are the pages my users are interested in. My normal users load the map, search the location they are interested in, click on a marker and click on a link in the popup window. However for search engines, this might look different. As this navigation pattern relies on user interaction, I think they might not be able to find the details page. My questions: Are search engines able to follow a navigation path like outlined above? How can I improve the navigation for search engines? (For example showing textual links below the map, sitemaps...) How important are internal links for SEO?

• Implementing a switch statement based on user input

  I'm trying to delay the time it takes for the main menu screen to pop up after a user has won / lost a match. As it stands, the game immediately displays a message stating "you won / lost" and waits for 6 seconds before loading the menu screen. I would also like players to have the ability to press a key to advance to the menu screen immediately but thus far my switch statement doesn't seem to do the trick. I've included the switch statement, along with my (theoretical) inputs.
