• Mercurial Hg Clone fails on C# project with GUID

  UPDATE: In trying to replicate this problem one more time to answer your questions I could not! I can only conclude that my initial setup of Mercurial was problematic and/or possibly I was trying to checkin a build that failed compilation before the checkin. Sigh! Thank you so very much for your help. I gave credit for the help on how to do a script. I need to try that for general purposes. hi all, I hope you can help me :). I am trying to see if Mercurial would be a good DCVS for my project at work, and I'm surely a newbie to many things. We have a fairly large codebase in C# (Dotnet3.0 not 3.5 , WindowsXP) and it utilizes the GUID feature. I confess to know little about how or why we use the GUID, but I do know that I cannot touch it. So, when I try hg clone, it fails unless I change the GUID in the cloned directory (ie create new GUID in Visual Studio and then paste that new GUID to replace the old one). To me, this completely defeats the purpose and utility of quick easy clones. It also makes difficult all the many workflows that require multiple clones. Is there a workaround, or is there something I'm doing wrong? How can I simplify and/or remove this problem? Would Bazaar make this easier? Thank you!

• In git, how can I get the diff between two dates?

  Basically, I am looking for something equivalent to cvs diff -D"1 day ago" -D"2010-02-29 11:11". While collecting more and more information, I found a solution. I paste it here, for others that might have similar problems. Things I have tried: In git, how can I get the diff between all the commits that occured between two dates? was ansered here with: git whatchanged --since="1 day ago" -p But this gives a diff for each commit, even if there are multiple commits in one file. I know that "date" is a bit of a loose concept in git, I thought there must be some way to do this. git diff 'master@{1 day ago}..master gives some warning warning: Log for 'master' only goes back to Tue, 16 Mar 2010 14:17:32 +0100. and does not show old diffs. git format-patch --since=yesterday --stdout does not give anything. revs=$(git log --pretty="format:%H" --since="1 day ago");git diff $(echo "$revs"|tail -n1) $(echo "$revs"|head -n1) works somehow, but seems complicated and does not restrict to the current branch. git diff $(git rev-list -n1 --before="1 day ago" master) seems to work and a default way to do similar things, although more complicated than I thought. Funnily, git-cvsserver does not support "cvs diff -D" (without that it is documented somewhere).

• Design pattern to use instead of multiple inheritance

  Coming from a C++ background, Im used to multiple inheritance. I like the feeling of a shotgun squarely aimed at my foot. Nowadays, I work more in C# and Java, where you can only inherit one baseclass but implement any number of interfaces (did I get the terminology right?). For example, lets consider two classes that implement a common interface but different (yet required) baseclasses: public class TypeA : CustomButtonUserControl, IMagician { public void DoMagic() { // ... } } public class TypeB : CustomTextUserControl, IMagician { public void DoMagic() { // ... } } Both classes are UserControls so I cant substitute the base class. Both needs to implement the DoMagic function. My problem now is that both implementations of the function are identical. And I hate copy-and-paste code. The (possible) solutions: I naturally want TypeA and TypeB to share a common baseclass, where I can write that identical function definition just once. However, due to having the limit of just one baseclass, I cant find a place along the hierarchy where it fits. One could also try to implement a sort of composite pattern. Putting the DoMagic function in a separate helper class, but the function here needs (and modifies) quite a lot of internal variables/fields. Sending them all as (reference) parameters would just look bad. My gut tells me that the adapter pattern could have a place here, some class to convert between the two when necessery. But it also feels hacky. I tagged this with language-agnostic since it applies to all languages that use this one-baseclass-many-interfaces approach. Also, please point out if I seem to have misunderstood any of the patterns I named. In C++ I would just make a class with the private fields, that function implementation and put it in the inheritance list. Whats the proper approach in C#/Java and the like?

• Why would the VB.NET compiler think an interface isn't implemented when it is?

  I have this happen sometimes, particularly with the INotifyPropertyChanged interface in my experience but I have no idea if the problem is limited to that single interface (which would seem bizarre) or not. Let's say I have some code set up like this. There's an interface with a single event. A class implements that interface. It includes the event. Public Interface INotifyPropertyChanged Event PropertyChanged As PropertyChangedEventHandler End Interface Public Class Person Implements INotifyPropertyChanged Public Event PropertyChanged _ (ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As PropertyChangedEventArgs) _ Implements INotifyPropertyChanged.PropertyChanged ' more code below ' End Class Every now and then, when I build my project, the compiler will suddenly start acting like the above code is broken. It will report that the Person class does not implement INotifyPropertyChanged because it doesn't have a PropertyChanged event; or it will say the PropertyChanged event can't implement INotifyPropertyChanged.PropertyChanged because their signatures don't match. This is weird enough as it is, but here's the weirdest part: if I just cut out the line starting with Event PropertyChanged and then paste it back in, the error goes away. The project builds. Does anybody have any clue what could be going on here?

• CakePHP: email validate action doesn't work when clicking on the email link

  Hi, We've created the email validation part of our site. We built the site using CakePHP BTW. The problem is that it doesn't work when we click on the link in the email. The email is sent as plain text. A weird thing is that when we paste the link on the address bar, it works. Also when clicking on the link using Gmail and desktop email clients, it works as well. Other email providers doesn't work. EDIT: Additional info: Example link for the validation: http://localhost/users/validate/validatecodeblah12c023 When it's working it should login the user and redirect to the user dashboard. It goes to the front page when it's not working (see description above). Additional info 2: I did compare the results using Live HTTP headers and I found out that the only time it doesn't push through (goes to the login page for some reason) is when there's a 'Referrer: h ttp://mail.yahooblahblah...' Gmail for some reason doesn't have a 'Referer' line in it's headers.

• Force compile-time linking of all classes in a SWC

  Using Flash CS4, I am making a game that has a dozen or so sounds and a couple of music tracks. To cut down on publish/compile time, I have moved the sounds and music into an (external) SWC, which is located in a "Library Path" for the project. This works, but with a caveat... Until before I externalised the assets, I had been dynamically instantiating the Sound objects of the embedded sound by getting their classes with getDefinitionByName. // something like... var soundSubClass:Class = Class(getDefinitionByName(soundClassName)); var mySound:Sound = new soundSubClass(); But now that they're located in an external SWC, I need to have "concrete" references to the classes in order to load them like this, otherwise they are not included in the published SWF, and there is a runtime error when getDefinitionByName tries to get a class that doesn't exist. So, my question: in Flash Professional CS4, is there any way to force a library's assets to be included, regardless of whether they are statically linked? FlashDevelop has a compiler option "SWC Include Libraries", which is exactly what I want, and is distinct from the "SWC Libraries" option. The description of the "SWC Include Libraries" option is "Links all classes inside a SWC file to the resulting application SWF file, regardless of whether or not they are used." (Also, it's important to me that all the assets are contained within the one compiled SWF. Linking at runtime isn't what I'm after.)

• Splitting an image in GWT results in unwanted white space

  I am using GWT 2.03 and am have an image that I want to place partially in an area with a background and partially above a background. I am using a FlexTable to try to accomplish this and have used GIMP to cut the image into two sections. I am trying to load the top part of the image into row 0 and the bottom part of the image into row 1. I set the alignment of the top image to ALIGN_BOTTOM but there is a bit of space at the bottom of cell and so the two parts of the picture don't touch. Here is an image showing what I am talking about. I set the background of the cell to be yellow show where the cell boundaries are. The bottom image and background are rendering correctly. Here is the relevant code snippet: FlexTable table = new FlexTable(); table.setCellSpacing(0); table.setCellPadding(0); table.setBorderWidth(0); FlexCellFormatter formatter = table.getFlexCellFormatter(); table.setWidget(0, 0, topImage); formatter.setStyleName(0, 0, "topImageStyle"); formatter.setVerticalAlignment(0, 0, HasVerticalAlignment.ALIGN_BOTTOM); table.setWidget(1, 0, bottomImage); formatter.setStyleName(1, 0, "bottomImageStyle"); How can I get rid of that space between my image and the cell boundary?

• MS Access Interop - How to set print filename?

  Hi all, I'm using Delphi 2009 and the MS Access Interop COM API. I'm trying to figure out two things, but one is more important than the other right now. I need to know how to set the file name when sending the print job to the spooler. Right now it's defaulting to the Access DB's name, which can be something different than the file's name. I need to just ensure that when this is printed it enters the print spool using the same filename as the actual file itself - not the DB's name. My printer spool is actually a virtual print driver that converts documents to an image. That's my main issue. The second issue is how to specify which printer to use. This is less important at the moment because I'm just using the default printer for now. It would be nice if I could specify the printer to use, though. Does anyone know either of these two issues? • Open Source: Why not release into Public Domain?

  I have recently been wondering why so little code is ever released as 'Public Domain'. MIT and BSD licenses are becoming extremely popular and practically only have the restriction of license propagation. The reasons I can think of so far are: Credit - aka Prestige, Street-cred, 'Props', etc. Authors don't want usage of the code restricted, but they also want credit for creating the code. Two problems with this reason. I have seen projects copy/paste the MIT or BSD license without adding the 'Copyright InsertNameHere' thereby making it a tag-along license that doesn't give them credit. I have talked to authors who say they don't care about people giving them credit, they just want people to use their code. Public Domain would make it easier for people to do so. License Change - IANAL, but I believe by licensing their code, even with an extremely nonrestrictive license, this means they can change the license on a later revision? This reason is not good for explaining most BSD/MIT licensed code which seems to have no intent of ever becoming more restrictive. AS IS - All licenses seem to have the SCREAMING CAPS declaration saying that the software is 'as is' and that the author offers no implied or express warranty. IANAL, but isn't this implied in public domain? Am I missing some compelling reason? The authors I have talked to about this basically said something along the lines of "BSD/MIT just seems like what you do, no one does public domain". Is this groupthink in action, or is there a compelling anti-public domain argument? Thanks EDIT: I am specifically asking about Public Domain vs BSD/MIT/OtherEquallyUnrestrictiveLicense. Not GPL. Please understand what these licenses allow, and this includes: Selling the work, changing the work and not 'giving the changes back', and incorporating the work in a differently (such as commercially) licensed work.   Hello everyone. I have problems with executing a process in a webservice method on a Windows Server 2003 machine. BUT, the dns entry will not be added! Here is the weird thing: I KNOW the user (user1) I authenticate with has administrative rights (it's the same user I use to log on the machine with), but the user of the process in procmon says NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM (which is not the user i use to authenticate). Weirdest: If i log on to the server, copy the command line value read from the procmon logging, and paste it in a command line window, it works! Reading procmon after this shows that user1 owns the dnscmd process. Why doesn't user1 become owner of the process started with system.diagnostics.process? Is the reason why the command doesn't work?

• suggestions for a 3D graph rendering library?

  Hello coders! So I'm not sure how stackoverflow friendly this question is since it doesn't have a quick clear cut answer but here we go... I have a java program that generates data for a directed graph. Now I need to render this graph. The data needs to be laid out in 3D, and I want to be able to define which plane an edge lives in. (Each edge will only need to occupy 1 plane of the 3D space). I also need the ability to navigate around the graph. Since I know that this kind of stuff is hard, I'm going shopping. So far I've looked into (In no particular order): JUNG: lacks 3D support Cytoscape: not sure how much I'll be able to define edge drawing, haven't seen a non bio-informatics application of it yet JGraph: I didn't see any 3D applications yet Perfuse: looks promising, does anyone know anything else about it? Gephi: Documentation looks scarce Processing: does this play well with java? I'm also considering doing some combination of opengl + swing rendering to create a 3D graph from multiple 2D graphs. I am also not adverse to the idea of linking from another language Any Ideas? Thank you.

• Mathematics for Computer Science Students

  To cut a long story short, I am a CS student that has received no formal Post-16 Maths education for years. Right now even my Algebra is extremely rusty and I have a couple of months to shape up my skills. I've got a couple of video lectures in my bookmarks, consisting of: Pre-Calculus Algebra Calculus Probability Introduction to Statistics Differential Equations Linear Algebra My aim as of today is to be able to read the CLRS book Introduction to Algorithms and be able to follow the Mathematical notation in that, as well as being able to confidently read and back-up any arguments written in Mathematical notation. Aside from these video lectures, can anyone recommend any good books to help teach someone wishing to go from a low-foundation level to a more advanced level of Mathematics? Just as a note, I've taken a first-year module in Analytical Modelling, so I understand some of the basic concepts of Discrete Mathematics. EDIT: Just a note to those that are looking to learn Linear Algebra using the Video Lectures I have posted up. Peteris Krumins' Blog contains a run-through of these lecture notes as well as his own commentary and lecture notes, an invaluable resource for those looking to follow the lectures too.

• PDO bindparam not working.

  I am trying to save data into a database using PDO. All columns save correctly with the exception of one. No matter what I try, I cannot get the data to go in. myfunc($db, $data) { echo $data; // <----- Outputs my data. example: 'jim jones' $stmt = $db->prepare("CALL test(:id, :data, :ip, :expires)"); $stmt->bindParam(':id', $id, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':data', $data, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':ip', $ip, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':expires', $expires, PDO::PARAM_STR); ... } So even after verifying that the data variable in fact holds my data, the bindParam method will not bind. When I echo the data variable, I can see the data is there. It will not save though. If I copy the echo'd output of the data variable to screen and paste it into a new variable, it WILL save. I'm at this now for a couple of hours. Can someone please have a look? EDIT: I want to also mention that I have tried using bindValue() in place of bindParam() and the data for the data variable will still not save.

• Background worker not working right

  I have created a background worker to go and run a pretty long task that includes creating more threads which will read from a file of urls and crawl each. I tried following it through debugging and found that the background process ends prematurely for no apparent reason. Is there something wrong in the logic of my code that is causing this. I will try and paste as much as possible to make sense.   Hi all, I have 40 subjects, of two groups, over 15 weeks, with some measured variable (Y). I wish to have a plot where: x = time, y = T, lines are by subjects and colours by groups. I found it can be done like this: TIME <- paste("week",5:20) ID <- 1:40 GROUP <- sample(c("a","b"),length(ID), replace = T) group.id <- data.frame(GROUP, ID) a <- expand.grid(TIME, ID) colnames(a) <-c("TIME", "ID") group.id.time <- merge(a, group.id) Y <- rnorm(dim(group.id.time)[1], mean = ifelse(group.id.time$GROUP =="a",1,3) ) DATA <- cbind(group.id.time, Y) qplot(data = DATA, x=TIME, y=Y, group=ID, geom = c("line"),colour = GROUP) But now I wish to add to the plot something to show the difference between the two groups (for example, a trend line for each group, with some CI shadelines) - how can it be done? I remember once seeing the ggplot2 can (easily) do this with geom_smooth, but I am missing something about how to make it work. Also, I wondered at maybe having the lines be like a boxplot for each group (with a line for the different quantiles and fences and so on). But I imagine answering the first question would help me resolve the second. Thanks.

• Windows 7 theme for WPF?

  Is there any way to make a WPF app look like it's running on Windows 7 even if it's running on XP? I'm looking for some kind of theme I can just paste in. I'm aware of the themes project on Codeplex (http://www.codeplex.com/wpfthemes), but it lacks support for DataGrid, which is something I critically need. I was thinking maybe the Windows 7 theme would just be an easy port, or exists in some file somewhere already. Any information you have (even if it's bad news) would be much appreciated. Update Using @Lars Truijens idea, I was able to get the Windows 7 look for the major controls, but unfortunately it did not work for the WPF Toolkit DataGrid control, which I need. DataGrid looks like this with Aero theme DataGrid should look like this So, I'm still looking for a solution to this problem if anyone has any ideas. Maybe someone has built an extension to the Aero theme that covers the WPF toolkit controls? Again, any information you have is much appreciated. Update 2 - Problem solved! To get the Aero theme to work with WPF Toolkit controls, you just need to add a second Aero dictionary, so your App.xaml should now look like this. <Application.Resources> ... <ResourceDictionary> <ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> <ResourceDictionary Source="/PresentationFramework.Aero;component/themes/Aero.NormalColor.xaml" /> <ResourceDictionary Source="pack://application:,,,/WPFToolkit;component/Themes/Aero.NormalColor.xaml" /> ... </ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries> </ResourceDictionary> </Application.Resources> Also, I would recommend turning the gridlines off in your DataGrid controls (because they look horrible): <DataGrid GridLinesVisibility="None" ...>

  Here is a test framework to show what I am doing, just create a new project add a tabbed control, on tab 1 put a button on tab 2 put a check box (default names) and paste this code for its code public partial class Form1 : Form { private List<bool> boolList = new List<bool>(); BindingSource bs = new BindingSource(); public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); boolList.Add(false); bs.DataSource = boolList; checkBox1.DataBindings.Add("Checked", bs, ""); } bool updating = false; private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { updating = true; boolList[0] = true; bs.ResetBindings(false); Application.DoEvents(); updating = false; } private void checkBox1_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!updating) MessageBox.Show("CheckChanged fired outside of updating"); } } The issue is if you run the program and look at tab 2 then press the button on tab 1 the program works as expected, however if you press the button on tab 1 then look at tab 2 the event for the checkbox will not fire untill you look at tab 2. The reason for this is the controll on tab 2 is not in the "created" state, so its binding to change the checkbox from unchecked to checked does not happen until after the control has been "Created". checkbox1.CreateControl() does not do anything because according to MSDN CreateControl does not create a control handle if the control's Visible property is false. You can either call the CreateHandle method or access the Handle property to create the control's handle regardless of the control's visibility, but in this case, no window handles are created for the control's children. I tried getting the value of Handle(there is no CreateHandle for Button) but still the same result. Any suggestions other than have the program quickly flash all of my tabs that have data-bound check boxes when it first loads?

• Linq-to-sql Add item and a one-to-many record at once

  I have a function where I can add articles and users can comment on them. This is done with a one to many relationship like= "commentId=>ArticleId". However when I try to add the comment to the database at the same time as I add the one to many record, the commentId is not known. Like this code: Comment comment = new Comment(); comment.Date = DateTime.UtcNow; comment.Text = text; comment.UserId = userId; db.Comments.InsertOnSubmit(comment); comment.Articles.Add(new CommentsForArticle() { ArticleId = articleId, CommentId = comment.CommentId }); The commentId will be 0 before i press submit. Is there any way arround not having to submit in between or do I simply have to cut out the part where I have a one-to-many relationship and just use a CommentTable with a column like "ArticleId". What is best in a performance perspective? I understand the underlying issue, I just want to know which solution works best.

  I've been trying to create a specialised CMS, as none of the current open-source ones fit my needs for this project. I did my research on Google, tried multiple times but haven't got very far with this project. I'm trying to create a CMS for a TV/episode guide which is similar to this: (for some that don't have the :// just copy-and-paste and add it after http in the URL) http library.digiguide.com/lib/programmenextshowing/Police%2C+Camera%2C+Action!-12578 (one such example) - where records expire and delete from the database after expiration. I'm not sure how to go about this successfully, anyone got any advice? (Note:Although the linked site runs in ASP.NET, it's the design and feel of it I'm trying to emulate, except in PHP. I've managed to emulate that site's design, but with my own tweaks to it.)

• Triangle numbers problem....show within 4 seconds

  The sequence of triangle numbers is generated by adding the natural numbers. So the 7th triangle number would be 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 28. The first ten terms would be: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, 55, ... Let us list the factors of the first seven triangle numbers: 1: 1 3: 1,3 6: 1,2,3,6 10: 1,2,5,10 15: 1,3,5,15 21: 1,3,7,21 28: 1,2,4,7,14,28 We can see that 28 is the first triangle number to have over five divisors. Given an integer n, display the first triangle number having at least n divisors. Sample Input: 5 Output 28 Input Constraints: 1<=n<=320 I was obviously able to do this question, but I used a naive algorithm: Get n. Find triangle numbers and check their number of factors using the mod operator. But the challenge was to show the output within 4 seconds of input. On high inputs like 190 and above it took almost 15-16 seconds. Then I tried to put the triangle numbers and their number of factors in a 2d array first and then get the input from the user and search the array. But somehow I couldn't do it: I got a lot of processor faults. Please try doing it with this method and paste the code. Or if there are any better ways, please tell me.

• Word Macros Problem: MsgBox function appears to lock all open windows of word

  I have some Macros that run in Word. We are migrating to Office 2007. Problem: the MsgBox function appears to lock all open windows of word. Any Ideas on how to get around that? (It is a macro that walks a user through a bunch of prompts for information that they enter into user forms and or MsgBoxes.) The error says: The command cannot be completed because a dialog box is open. Click OK then close all open dialog boxes to continue. Is there any way to have each window of word act independently of each other? The problem is that the information is frequently cut and pasted from other open word documents, and this doesn't work as the MsgBox locks control of ALL windows of Word 2007. The macros are pretty simple, but if you want to see the code, I will certainly post it. Basically, the old version of office let you go between windows, while 2007, that we are migrating to does not. I have run all the updates I could find. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• using the window object for accessing global user defined objects and using text within html for cre

  I don't do very much jquery / javascript but wanted to ask for some advice on the following piece. I have tried to cut out as much as possible. Most of this was semi-inherited code with catching a bunch of events just hardcoded in. I'd like to generalized them more by putting the object name in the html and accessing via jquery on processing (by_date, by_popularity). I retriev as string and access the object via window[current_obj]. Is this a good way to do this or am I missing something? • On Windows 7: Same path but Explorer & Java see different files than Powershell

  Submitted for your approval, a story about a poor little java process trapped in the twilight zone... Before I throw up my hands and just say that the NTFS partition is borked is there any rational explanation of what I am seeing. I have a file with a path like this C:\Program Files\Company\product\config\file.xml I am reading this file after an upgrade and seeing something wonky. Eclipse and my Java app are still seeing the old version of this file while some other programs see the new version. The test that convinced my it was not my fat finger that caused the problem was this: In Explorer I entered the above path and Explorer displayed the old version of the file. Forcing Explorer to reload via Ctrl-F5 still yields the old version. This is the behavior I get in Java. Now in PowerShell I enter more "C:\Program Files\Company\product\config\file.xml" I cut and past the path from Explorer to make sure I am not screwing anything up and it shows me the new version of the file. So for the programming aspect of this, is there a cache or some system component that would be storing this stale reference. Am I responsible for checking or reseting that for some class of files. I can imagine somebody being "creative" in how xml files are processed to provide some bell or whistle. But it could be a case of just being borked. Any insights appreciated...Thanks!
