• floating point precision in ruby on rails model validations

  Hello I am trying to validate a dollar amount using a regex: ^[0-9]+\.[0-9]{2}$ This works fine, but whenever a user submits the form and the dollar amount ends in 0(zero), ruby(or rails?) chops the 0 off. So 500.00 turns into 500.0 thus failing the regex validation. Is there any way to make ruby/rails keep the format entered by the user, regardless of trailing zeros?

  I would like a little confirmation that I'm doing this correctly. Using rails single table inheritance I have the following models and class method: class PhoneNumber < ActiveRecord::Base def self.qual?(number) klass = self klass.exists?(:phone_number => phone_number) end end class Bubba < PhoneNumber end class Rufus < PhoneNumber end Bubba.qual?("8005551212") Tests pass and everything seems to work properly in rails console. Just wanted to confirm that I'm not headed for future trouble by using self in the superclass PhoneNumber and using that to execute class methods on subclasses from the parent. Is there a better way?

In code, I would like to run: User.friends and it should return me an array of users, containing the users that I'm friend of. It shouldn't matter in which side of the relationship I am (i.e. whether I'm the friender or the friendee). Any thoughts?

• Rails - Associations - Automatically setting an association_id for a model which has 2 belongs_to

  I have 3 models class User < ... belongs_to :language has_many :posts end class Post < ... belongs_to :user belongs_to :language end class Language < ... has_many :users has_many :posts end Im going to be creating lots of posts via users and at the same time I have to also specify the language the post was written in, which is always the language associatd with the user i.e. @user.posts.create(:text => "blah", :language_id => @user.language_id) That's fine but the way I set the language doesn't sit well with me. The language will always be that of the users so is there a 'best-practice' way of doing this? I know a little about callbacks and association extensions but not sure of any pitfalls.

  I have a table full of bugs. The BugTitle is the page erroring and I also capture the error line. I would like to build an SQL Query that selects the top 10 bugs based on bugtitle and error line. I have this query: SELECT COUNT(BugTitle) AS BugCount, BugTitle, ErrLine FROM Bugs WHERE BugDate >= DateAdd(Day, -30, DateDiff(Day, 0, GetDate())) GROUP BY BugTitle, ErrLine ORDER BY BugCount, ErrLine DESC But I'm not sure if it's correct. I'm pretty sure that my test data only has 1 bug that happens on the same line but that's not showing up with this query. Can anyone help?

  My application has two node types: a parent node which can hold recursive child nodes. Think of it like the post-comment system in SO, but comments can be recursive: parent_1 child_11 child_12 child_121 child_3 parent_2 child_21 child_211 child_2111 Important to note that the parent nodes have different attributes and behavior than the child nodes. What is the correct (and presumably most efficient) way of modeling this relationship in Django?

  I have a site with a flash SWF on the home page. I have a login dialog that is displayed using the jquery ui modal. The modal dialog is being covered by the SWF movie when it opens. I tried setting the z-index etc but nothing seems to stop the SWF from covering the log in. Is there any way to force the SWF movie to the background? The SWF uses src="support/AC_RunActiveContent.js" if that helps isolate the version.

  I have a CoreData entity X, and controllers for this entity, XController. Now there's another entity, XGroup, containing a collection of X entities, and a XGroupController. Now the problem is that XGroupController needs to interact with XController, and it would be nice to just pass XGroupController a XGroup to observe, and then get the XControllers from the X entities. So the question is: is it a good idea to store a (weak, to avoid retain cycles) reference to a controller in an entity? It just feels a bit "wrong". Is there another design pattern for this?

  I am trying to create multiple items (each with a name value and a content value) in a single form. The code I have is functioning, but I cannot figure out how to ignore items that are blank. The problem is, that I can't use the suggested solution under android, because it throws java.lang.verifyError...   I read this article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-genericdao.html several times and believe I understand what it is saying. However, it is 4 years old and I have a JPA compliant Java application to contend with. In addition, I see that there is a JPATemplate in Spring that has some good functionality, but the Spring documentation says it is already deprecated! Can anybody point me to a solid, modern, JPA compliant, Spring based, working example of a GenericDAOImpl that proxies an Interface to provide generic finder execution?

  Hi im a little confused by this diagram http://www.b-eye-network.com/images/content/i030ht0104.gif (Last diagram in the article) 1 - In the "ACCOUNTING ENTRY" table it shows "DebitEntry" and "CreditEntry" i) is this two column or ii) is this two rows of data? or iii) is it two separate tables on its own, Acounting_entry_credit and Accounting_entry_debit?   We want to implement a "News feed" where a user can see messages broadcasted by her friends, sorted with newest message first. But the feed should reflect changes in her friends list. (If she adds new friends, messages from those should be included in the feed, and if she removes friends their messages should not be included.) If we use the pubsub-test example and attach a recipient list to each message this means a lot of manipulation of the message recipients lists when users connect and disconnect friends. We first modeled publish-subscribe "fan out" using conventional RDBMS thinking. It seemed to work at first, but then, since the IN operator works the way it does, we quickly realized we couldn't continue on that path. We found Brett Slatkin's presentation from last years Google I/O and we have now watched it a few times but it isn't clear to us how to do it with "dynamic" recipient lists. What we need are some hints on how to "think" when modeling this.

  I use Linq to Sql (although this is equally applicable in Entity Framework) for my models, and I'm finding myself creating buddy classes for my models all the time. I find this time consuming and repetitive. Is there an easy way to automatically generate these buddy classes based on the models? Perhaps a visual studio macro? • Custom date time picker for Windows Forms that is locked to GMT time

  Using Visual Studio 2008, c#, .net 2.0. I have a Windows Forms client application that contains a scheduling UI section, currently this is housed only in the London office with the standard datetime picker control, the selected time is saved in a UK database (GMT) and a London based server aapplication processes the schedules. There is a requirement to roll the client out to various global locations, Hong Kong, New York etc and allow them to setup schedules that run according to GMT time on the London server. I'll have a label on screen saying "note schedules are GMT" what I need is a good way to present a datetime picker that always shows and is in sync with the database server's GMT time regardless of where the client app is running globally. Suggestions on how to acheive this? thanks.
