• Honor Whitespace padding to display columns in fixed width <select>

  I am trying to create the effect of columns in a dropdown by padding text with whitespace as in this example: <select style="font-family: courier;"> <option value="1">[Aux1+1] [*] [Aux1+1] [@Tn=PP] </option> <option value="2">[Main] [*] [Main Apples Oranges] [@Fu=$p] </option> <option value="3">[Main] [*] [Next NP] [@Fu=n] </option> <option value="4">[Main] [Dr] [Main] [@Ty=$p] </option> </select> According to this blog, it's possible. The problem is the whitespace is contracted so that the columsn don't line up. SAme results in FF, IE6 and Chrome. What am I missing?

• Drawing reflexive edges in State Machines

  I have to draw a small finite state machine that has some reflexive transitions (meaning the start and the end state of the transition are equal. • Need help making row of buttons consistent

  I'm making my first website, and I'm trying to make variable-sized buttons so they'll render correctly on low resolution (read: mobile) browsers. Currently I just have the usual rollover image solution (185 pixels wide by 37 tall if anybody cares), but when I preview the site in low resolution it looks, predictably enough, like complete crap (more specifically they don't have room so they arrange vertically instead of horizontally and take up a huge amount of screen real estate). Semi-related, is there a way to overlay text on a button without saving separate images, each with the correct text? Just using a single template for buttons and then deciding what text goes on it as it's needed? tl;dr: I'm trying to get a horizontal lineup of buttons for navigating my website, but I'm a noob and I can't do it right without your generous assistance.

• Setting a breakpoint in a T4 template

  I'm trying to debug the execution of a T4 template in Visual Studio 2008. All the information I'm finding on debugging T4 templates in Visual Studio 2008 say that you can set a breakpoint (red dot) in the template as if it were a regular code file. I have the Clarius T4 code highlighter installed, so my T4 template is colored, but I can't set a breakpoint. When I click in the margin nothing happens. I've tried Debugger.Break(), and it launches a new instance of VS.NET, but it can't load the code from my template. I get a dialog that says "There is no source code available for the current location." This happens if I have the same project loaded in the another instance of if I spin up a new instance. What gives?

  I am currently learning C by reading a good beginner's book called "Teach Yourself C in 21 Days" (I have already learned Java and C# so I am moving at a much faster pace). I was reading the chapter on pointers and the - (arrow) operator came up without explanation. I think that it is used to call members and functions (like the equivalent of the . (dot) operator, but for pointers instead of members). But I am not entirely sure. Could I please get an explanation and a code sample?

• ASP.NET Excel Export formatting question

  Hey Guys, I've been banging my head on the wall over this issue for a couple days now and I need some help. I'm creating an excel file using ASP.net and everything is going just fine except one column has to be formatted as a decimal to 2 places but when it pulls into excel, excel automatically formats it as a whole number instead of keeping the decimal places. sw.Write(String.Format("{0:f}", CDbl(dr(14)).ToString("0.00"))) this produces "20.00" but when I open it in excel it's displayed as 20...if I select the whole column and format it as a number it gets displayed as 20.00 like it's supposed to but I don't want to have to do this (I can't do that) the file is supposed to be automatically picked up and imported into another system that needs the column to be a decimal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• C# CF: How to open specific file extension with my program

  Hi, Im developing a mobile application in dot net Compact framework. I managed to edit the registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT so that a click on file with .xyz extension will open my application. basically, i need to do some operation on this file when it's clicked. however, i realise that if i do that the first time, it reaches program.cs at static void Main. but when the program is running and i click on the file with .xyz extension again, it doesnt loads the program static void Main. i tried setting breakpoints at the form that is currently running but still nothing. so where does it go to? how can i detect file .xyz is clicked and do something??

I'm confused on how to proceed, should I use dot notation or do a full text search for apples? • Visual Studio 2008 - formatting/control characters/marks

  Hi, I don't know what I did but somehow the IDE has started displaying a green dot whenever I press spacebar and a green arrowhead whenever I press TAB. The source has become littered with these characters all over and I am finding it very difficult to code in the presence of so many formatting marks. I have tried to search a solution on Google but couldn't perhaps enter the right keywords so haven't been able to fix the behavior. Is there any way I can stop VS2008 IDE from littering my source code with these green dots and arrowheads whenever I press spacebar/tab? I would be really thankful for this help. • Implementing IComparer<T> For IComparer<DictionaryEntry>

  I am using the ObservableSortedDictionary from Dr. WPF. The constructor looks like this: public ObservableSortedDictionary(IComparer<DictionaryEntry> comparer) I am really struggling to create an implementation that satisfies the constructor and works. My current code (that won't compile) is: public class TimeCreatedComparer<T> : IComparer<T> { public int Compare(T x, T y) { var myclass1 = (IMyClass)((DictionaryEntry)x).Value; var myclass2 = (IMyClass)((DictionaryEntry)y).Value; return myclass1.TimeCreated.CompareTo(myclass2.TimeCreated); } } It says I can't cast from T to DictionaryEntry. If I cast directly to IMyClass, it compiles, but I get a runtime error saying I can't cast from DictionaryEntry to IMyClass. At runtime, x and y are instances of DictionaryEntry, which each have the correct IMyClass as their Value.

• Can I use the newer versions of Visual Studio to do "old" things?

  I have several ATL/COM-based DLLs that I've been using Visual C++ 6.0 on. I require a couple of "old" things out of the generated DLLs: (1) They must be compatible with projects developed in Visual Basic 6.0 (the old VB6, emphatically not VB.Net). (2) They must be compatible with old operating systems - minimum Windows 98 SE. To be clear, I mean they must run on such OSes, not that I would have to be able to develop them on a machine running such an OS. I am sick of Visual Studio 6.0. Converting to Dot Net (or any other major change like that) is out of the question at the current time, so I must continue to use VB6. But can I switch to the newer Visual Studio's C++, with a minimum of effort (i.e. little if any required recoding)? If so, are there any "gotchas" I should watch out for? Thanks.

So, it comes to one risk that I wanted to ask about. If I convert the app to a pure QML application like the kind generated by the Qt Quick UI application wizard with no C++ and designed to be run with qmlscene will I be able to compile it for iOS when the time to port it comes or will I end up just converting it back to the C++ loader form? TL;DR Can pure QML (no C++) apps be compiled and run on iOS devices?

  Hi. I am trying to use JSON.stringify() (from json2.js of json[dot]org ) to convert a JavaScript array to JSON string and to pass it to an asmx web method. I use jQuery AJAX. The call reaches the web method where I take a List <Object> as parameter but I get an empty list there in debug mode. My JSON string looks like well formed with all data , I even tried having single-quotes and double-quotes(escaped) around the 'names' of the JSON string. Please help.

  I am developing a app for sending some feedback. Basically i'm trying to make a TextBox for comments, but i'm used to the WinForms MultiLine=true. I've set MinLines to 3, which is getting there, but preferably i'd like if user is able to type wherever in this block, like press enter and do dot points sort of thing - like: - Item 1 blah - Item 2 blahlb lahbvl d But at the moment the text all stays on one line. - Item 1 blah - Item 2 blahb blahb blah This comments will then help fill the body of an email which is sent. It may be pointless if I can't easily keep the same formatting when putting this string into the email body string (so that it looks like it does when sent as it does when typed). Can I achieve what I'm after or do I have to leave it as all text on one line?

• remove Annotation removes random amount of annotations at a time

  I've got this code to erase an annotations (pins) in my mkmapview without erasing my blue dot (userLocation). The problem is that it erasing the pins I've added in seemingly random numbers. when it's called through an IBAction it removes the first 5 then click again it removes the next 3, then the next 2, then the last one. • Is Alpha Five Version 10 really all that its reported to be?

  I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database devlopment tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

• OpenGL: small black pixel on top right corner of texture

  I wrote an uncompressed TGA texture loader and it works nearly perfect, except for the fact that there's just one TINY little black patch on the upper right and it's driving me mad. I can get rid of it by using a texture border, but somehow I think that's not the practical solution. Has anyone encountered this kind of problem before and knows -generally- what's going wrong when something like this happens, or should I post the image-loading function code? • Should I use the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) pattern in Silverlight projects?

  One challenge with Silverlight controls is that when properties are bound to code, they're no longer really editable in Blend. For example, if you've got a ListView that's populated from a data feed, there are no elements visible when you edit the control in Blend. I've heard that the MVVM pattern, originated by the WPF development community, can also help with keeping Silverlight controls "blendable". • What tech stack/platform to use for a project?

  Hey guys, This is a bit of a weird meta-programming question, but I've realized that my new project doesn't need a full MVC framework, and being a rails guy, I'm not sure what to use now. To give you a gist of the necessary functionality; this website will display static pages, but users will be able to log in and 'edit their current plans'. All purchasing and credit card editing is being handled by a recurring payment subscriber, I just need a page to edit their current plan. All of that will be done through (dynamic) XML API calls, so no database is necessary. Should I stick with my typical rails/nginx stack, or is there something I could use that would lighten the load, since I don't need the Rails heft. I'm familiar with python and PHP but would prefer not to go that route. Is Sinatra a good choice here? tl;dr: What's a good way to quickly serve mostly static pages, preferably in Ruby, with some pages requiring dynamic XML rendering?

  Hello all. I have a tree structure that can be n-levels deep, without restriction. That means that each node can have another n nodes. What is the best way to retrieve a tree like that without issuing thousands of queries to the database? I looked at a few other models, like flat table model, Preorder Tree Traversal Algorithm, and so. Do you guys have any tips or suggestions of how to implement a efficient tree model? My objective in the real end is to have one or two queries that would spit the whole tree for me. • Full text search for irregular rapper names with Solr

  I'm implementing full text search functionality on my rap website, and I'm running into some issues with rapper and song names. For example, someone might want to search for the rapper "Cam'ron" using the query "camron" (leaving out the mid-word apostrophe). Likewise, someone might search for the song "3 Peat" using the query "3peat". "The Notorious B.I.G." is a bit of a weird case: both "The Notorious BIG" and "The Notorious B.I.G." both work (I guess because the solr.StandardFilterFactory removes dots from acronyms?), but "The Notorious B.I.G" (i.e., minus the trailing dot) doesn't. Ideally all reasonable variations of these names should work. I'm guessing the answer has something to do with the solr.WordDelimiterFilterFactory, but I'm not sure. Also, I'm using Sunspot with Rails if that's relevant.
