• Is there a standard Mac OS X Snow Leopard home folder naming convention?

  I recently re-installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard on my Mac. I was a bit surprised when the process completed it had changed the name of my home folder to use my name rather than my initials. This messed up all the paths in my Eclipse IDE workspace. I vaguely remember being asked if I use it for home or business use and wondered if something I did there has a bearing on the way the default name is assigned. • Unable to terminate extra EC2 instances

  I'm just setting up my AWS server & I'm trying to use the EC2 Console to terminate some extra instances that I generated via the AWS for Eclipse toolkit's New Project AWS Java Web Project utility. Unfortunately, every time I stop, then terminate such an instance via the EC2 Console, it automatically recreates & reactivates itself! I really don't want to be paying for 4 dev systems when I only need 1, so can somebody please clue me in? Please explain gently... I'm new to this environment.

• Problem with Java Mail : No provider for smtp

  Hello all. I am using JavaMail to do a simple application that sends an email when it finds some files in a directory. I managed to get it worked from Eclipse. I Run the application and it sent the email with no errors. But, when I created the jar, and executed it, it fails in the email sending part. Anyway, if it works fine from Eclipse with the original parameters, I guess that the values are correct, but the problem is creating the jar. I don't know very much about the possible results or changes when creating a jar. Could the JavaMail libraries someway go wrong when the jar is created? Do you have any ideas? • Adding JBoss repository to m2eclipse, no latest Hibernate version

  I'm trying to add JBoss repository to m2eclipse, mainly for Hibernate. It seems to work, but it can't find the latest version of Hibernate (3.5.1), only 3.5.0beta. I looked at some other packages, and they all seem a couple of months behind. What could be causing this? I'm running latest m2eclipse, and i guess latest Eclipse (it just says 20100218-1602, eclipse people think it's funny to not include version in the about dialog), on ubuntu 9.10.   My mod_rewrite turns accounts/create into index.php?folder=accounts&action=create, but pdt ignores it, so when I try to start a PHP Script debug session, I have to type a folder location in the file field and pdt doesn't accept. When PDT auto generates the URL for the PHP Web Page debug session, I go to http://localhost/myframe/index.php?XDEBUG%5FSESSION%5FSTART=ECLIPSE%5FDBGP&KEY=12569067976875, but myframe is in the frameworks folder, so I get a 404 error. When I check a breakpoint, uncheck Auto Generate, add frameworks before myframe in URL, set Start Debug from http://localhost/frameworks/myframe/accounts/create in Advanced and click Debug, the debugger doesn't stop at the breakpoint.

• Linux: close a program with command line (not kill it)

  Some applications only allow one running instance (like eclipse, if you want to use the same workspace). So if I log in from another location, I have to kill/close the application that was open when I previously logged in from another location. I always use kill command to kill the running process. But, if you kill a process, it might not save some states that are useful for future usage. However, if you "close" it properly byclicking on the close button, for example, it will save the states properly. Is there a way to properly "close" an application from command line? I know this can vary from applications, so let's be a bit more generic: how to send a signal to another running application, and this signal works just as if we click the "close" button in the top bar? thanks!

• Xcode/iPhone Development 6 months in - Annoyances

  Hi I've been iPhone programming for 6 months and come from a PC/Java/Eclipse background and still have a few annoyances with Xcode/iPhone programming I wonder are there any shortcuts to. Is there any way to prevent multiple windows opening all the time in XCode? a) When you click on the Errors/Warnings in the bottom right of the status bar build errors are shown in separate window. Any way to get these to show in the main editor? b) Anyway to get debugger to appear in main editor. I have a big screen iMac and it's still window hell on Macs. When you come from Alt-Tab the Mac is a nightmare. 2) Anyway to get a toolbar item on the main editor to: a) Open Console (I know CMD-thingy-R) b) Open Break points (you have to open Debugger first then breakpoints) I know there's keyboard shortcuts but I have only left hand free others on the trackball so any keys on right hand side of keyboard are too far. I know you can add Finder toolbar scripts (just wondering if anyway to extend Xcode). Are there utilities to extend Xcode? Scripts/Automator/Any Services I can setup to help. Can you automate Xcode like you can with Windows/ActiveX/VBA 3) Limit lookups using CMD + double click. If I double click on a variable to find its definition using CMD + double click it shows every occurrence of all variables with that name. (annoying it you name all you maps mapView) Anyway to get it to limit to the current class or at least order so current class is first. 4) Find doesn't seem to loop backwards if result all above cursor position I'm in a class and I hit CMD + F for find. Find box appears. I enter some text hit return. It says I have x matches but only back arrow is highlight in Find But when I hit < it does nothing. I need to scroll to the top and redo the search. If the text is both forwards and backwards then both < are highlighted and it works. is this a bug or a 'feature' Missing Eclipse features I have been looking at the User Script menu but was wondering how powerful they are? 5) any scripts around to generate source from members such as description: @property @synthesize if I add a new member, run a script will generate @property/@syntesize and release in dealloc 7) any good sites for scripts? SCM Im having problems with SCM and Folders on HD under project Classes directory. You get a library e.g. JSON. It usually comes as a folder. You copy it to the /Classes for your project. /Classes/JSON I create a Group for the Library in Xcode under Classes group. Classes JSON I drag the files from the folder into xcode into the JSON Group. I add them to the SCM and icon changes from ? to A but if I try and commit them it say folder /JSON is not under SCM. Can you drag a folder into Xcode so that it AND its files get included in SCM? Anyway to stop Xcode Help from being on top all the time. I keep feeling like punching it and telling it to get out of the way! :) I dont mind it open just not in the way once I've finished. • Options to optimize lotus notes 8.5.X

  Has anyone found actually useful optimization methods for the bulky, fat, eclipse giant, nuissance that is Lotus Notes 8.5? I want it to be fast, and not eat up system resources like crazy while I run it ALL day (as it is my company's corporate mail / cal / scheduling solution). I've tried various hacks for the JVM heap size (if I recall correctly). None really bring a performance improvement. I have a dual core cpu, if that helps (I tried going the route of optimizing JAVA for 2 cores in hopes it would work, but seen no speed improvement). Notes is just sooo bloated, anyone have any suggestions to optimize/mod this thing so it is more responsive and less of a resource hog. Note: I don't want to switch to the web version, or the standard stripped down versions, I am aware of those, I just cannot since we don't run those internally for the company.

• Install both 64-bit and 32-bit JDK on a 64-bit windows?

  I need to use a java library that uses native code requiring a 32-bit jvm. I have 64-bit windows with 64-bit eclipse installed with 64-bit JDK7. In order to develop with it, do I need to have 32-bit JDK? Or would the JRE suffice? If it is possible to install both, what is the naming convention you use for the installation directory for the 32-bit jre or jdk? I have heard rumors there is a performance hit on virtual memory if both are installed, is this true?

  Hello - My production env runs CentOS 5.2 and 5.5 versions. I have to develop a new tool using C/C++ and deploy it on this production env. I was planning to use Fedora 14 on my desktop with GCC 4.4 to do the development with Eclipse IDE. And then later I want to deploy the executables to CentOS 5.2 or 5.5 The production env will have GCC 4.4 as well. Since both Fedora and CentOS are RHEL based, I thought this is possible. So can I do this? Or do I need to have CentOS 5.2/5.5 on my development desktop as well? Thanks Amit

• xDebug on Zend Server CE under Windows XP

  I have Zend Server installed on my Windows XP development machine, installed when I was naive and didn't know that Eclipse was going to become so suck so badly for PHP development. I've made the upgrade to Netbeans, but for debugging they only support xDebug. To be fair I've never used "proper" debuggers before, but other folks have raved about them so I thought I'd give it a try. I followed some directions on the Zend forum about how to install xDebug on Zend server, disabling Zend Debugger in the process. The xDebug "custom installation instructions" wizard tells me that my PHP was compiled with an unsupported compiler (MS VC8), and won't let me download anything. I tried a couple of the other xDebug binaries, but they just refused to load. So I'm left without a debugger option. Does anyone know how I can change the compiler of the php version I have installed so I can use a debugger in Netbeans? or how else i can get xDebug to install on Zend Server?

Scenario 1: Windows Server 2008 x64 transfer into Windows XP using RDP client (Local Devices and Resources) Scenario 2: Windows XP 32 bit transfer into Windows Server 2003 x64 using shared network drive (port 445 SMB ?) for both of the scenario it always failed / corrupted (the source code seems to be duplicated at the end of line when you open up in the Eclipse / Java IDE). but when in both scenario i compressed the file into .ZIP file everything is OK. can anyone explains why this problem happens ? • A methology that allows for a single Java code base covering many different versions?

  I work in a small shop where we have a LOT of legacy Cobol code and where a methology has been adopted to allow us to minimize forking and branching as much as possible. For a given release we have three levels: CORE - bottom layer, this code is common to all releases GROUP - optional code common to several customers. CUSTOMER - optional code specific for a single customer. When a program is needed, it is first searched for in CUSTOMER, then in GROUP and finally in CORE. A given application for us invokes many programs which all are looked for in this sequence (think exe files and PATH under Windows). We also have Java programs interacting with this legacy code, and as the core-group-customer lookup mehchanism does not lend it self easily to Java it has tended to grow in a CVS branch for each customer, requiring much too much maintainance. The Java part and the backend part tend to be developed in parallel. I have been assigned to figure out a way to make the two worlds meet. Essentially we want a Java enviornment which allows us to have a single code base with sources for each release, where we easily can select a group and a customer and work with the application as it goes for that customer, and then easily switch to another codeset and THAT customer. I was thinking of perhaps a scenario with an Eclipse project for each core, customer, and group and then use Project Sets to select those we need for a given scenario. The problem I cannot get my head about, is how we would create robust code in the CORE projects which will work regardless of which group and customer is selected. A Factory class which knows which sub class of a passed Class object to invoke instead of each and every new? Others must have had similar code base management problems. Anybody with experiences to share? EDIT: The conclusion to this problem above has been that CVS needs to be replaced with a source code management system better suited for dealing with many branches concurrently and the migration of source from one component to the other while keeping history. Inspired by the recent migration by slf4j and logback we are currently looking at git as it handles branches very well. We've considered subversion and mercurial too but git appears to be better for single location, multibranched projects. I've asked about Perforce in another question, but my personal inclination is towards open source solutions for something as crucial as this. EDIT: After some more pondering, we've found that our actual pain point is that we use branches in CVS, and that branches in CVS are the easiest to work with if you branch ALL files! The revised conclusion is that we can do this with CVS alone, by switching to a forest of java projects, each corresponding to one of the levels above, and use the Eclipse build paths to tie them together so each CUSTOMER version pulls in the appropriate GROUP and CORE project. We still want to switch to a better versioning system but this is so important a decision so we want to delay it as much as possible. EDIT: I now have a proof-of-concept implementation of the CORE-GROUP-CUSTOMER concept using Google Guice 2.0 - the @ImplementedBy tag is just what we need. I wonder what everybody else does? Using if's all over the place? EDIT: Now I also need this functionality for web applications. Guice was until the JSR-330 is in place. Anybody with versioning experience? EDIT: JSR-330/299 is now in place with the JEE6 reference implementation Weld based on JBoss Seam and I have reimplemented the proof-of-concept with Weld and can see that if we use @Alternative along with ... in beans.xml we can get the behaviour we desire. I.e. provide a new implementation for a given functionality in CORE without changing a bit in the CORE jars. Initial reading up on the Servlet 3.0 specification indicates that it may support the same functionality for web application resources (not code). We will now do initial testing on the real application.

• Mac OSX: new folder doesn't appear in Finder

  Many times I have the following problem. I create a new folder, but it doesn't appear in the Finder. Right now I have this problem with a folder created in Eclipse. After a while it appears, but I cannot tell when. I can see the folder in the terminal. A similar problem happens when I rename a folder or file. Then I have to move out of the parent folder, open another folder, go back, and most of the time it's there. I'm using 10.8 Mountain Lion now, but this is not a problem of this release. I have this problem for several years now. Maybe I'm the only one with this problem? Is there a way to get this working normally?

• How do I tar dot files but not dot directories

  The following tar command will exclude all dot files and dot directories. tar -cvzf /media/bjackfly/bkup/bkup.gz --exclude '.*' --one-file-system /home/bjackfly In my case I want the dot files to be backed up in the home directory (.vimrc, .bashrc) etc. but not the dot directories /.config /.cache /.eclipse etc. Any Linux gurus with a command for this, or do I need to run a find into a tar or do two different tar commands which is non-ideal? One for dot files in the home directory and one for everything else?

• Is there a simple Load Balancer app for development environment on Windows?

  Does there exist a simple Load Balancer app for development on Windows? I am running a pair of JBoss 5.x instances in a cluster on a single machine. Normally , this configuration is load balanced by a nice hardware load balancer but I am wondering if there is a simple piece of software to enable load balancing in my Eclipse dev environment. Basically, for example, I want a load balancer running on port 11111 that round-robins between the 2 clustered JBoss instances on ssl ports 8443 and 8543 . (or http port if thats not possible) I know that Glassfish has a built-in load balancer but I can't use Glassfish. One idea I have is to try to setup a separate instance of Tomcat with the "balancer" web app. Im trying that now... not sure if it will work... and its a complicated setup and I wish there was something really easy.

I tried a couple of the other xDebug binaries, but they just refused to load. So I'm left without a debugger option. Does anyone know how I can change the compiler of the php version I have installed so I can use a debugger in Netbeans? or how else i can get xDebug to install on Zend Server?

• VIM autocompletion: Making ^X^U expand to longest match

  I'm using eclim to bring some eclipse functionality to VIM, however the code completion functions seem to work less than ideal. When I press ctrl+x ctrl+u after, for instance, System.out. with the curser right after the last dot, I get the completion popup-menu. This menu is really rather cumbersome to use, and the functionality that I would ideally want is something like: ctrl+x ctrl+u (expands to longest match) fill in more characters (expand to longest match). Is this possible somehow? I've tried fiddling with the completeopts settings, but they don't seem to do what I want.
