  • Pictures from VTdotNET VS2010 Launch

Vermont.NET’s April meeting coincided with the Visual Studio 2010 launch so we had our own launch event! With cake… It was our biggest meeting attendance ever with 60 signed up and 56 signed in at the door. Four people presented…”some of our favorite things about VS2010 and .NET 4.0”. The presenters were Victor Castro, Eric Hall, Rob Hale and myself. Instead of the usual pizza, we had a feast of sandwiches, rollups, chips and veggies & dip, all very generously...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Why is it always "what language should I learn next" instead of "what project should I tackle next"?

    - by MikeRand
Hi all, Why do beginning programmers (like me) always ask about the next language they should learn instead of asking about the next project to tackle? Why did Eric Raymond, in the "Learn How To Program" section of his "How To Become A Hacker" essay, talk about the order in which you should learn languages (vs. the order in which you should tackle projects). Do beginning carpenters ask "I know how to use a hammer ... should I learn how to use a saw or a level next?" I ask because I'm finding that almost any meaningful project I'm interested in tackling (e.g. a web app, a set of poker analysis tools) requires that I learn just enough of a multitude of languages (Python, C, HTML, CSS, Javascript, SQL) and frameworks/libraries (wxPython, tkinter, Django) to implement them. Thanks, Mike

  • BeanInfo Editor in NetBeans Rocks

    - by Geertjan
Impressed by a cool feature I didn't know about. If you have some JavaBean, like my Event class below, you can right-click it and choose "BeanInfo Editor": Now, as you can see above, I don't have a BeanInfo class. So I am now asked whether the IDE should create one for me. So I say OK and then I have a new BeanInfo class, generated from my Event class, as well as a multiview editor for visually editing the BeanInfo class: Thanks Eric and Nicklas from Artificial Solutions in Stockholm for pointing this out to me today. It comes in very handy in NetBeans Platform applications when you're working with a BeanNode and want to customize the display of your properties.

  • Is Domain Driven Design useful / productive for not so complex domains?

    - by Elijah
When assessing a potential project at work, I suggested that it might be advantageous to use a domain driven design approach to its object model. The project does not have an excessively complex domain, so my coworker threw this at me: It has been said, that DDD is favorable in instances where there is a complex domain model (“...It applies whenever we are operating in a complex, intricate domain” Eric Evans). What I'm lost on is - how you define the complexity of a domain? Can it be defined by the number of aggregate roots in the domain model? Is the complexity of a domain in the interaction of objects? The domain that we are assessing is related online publishing and content management.

  • Hex Dump using LINQ (in 7 lines of code)

Eric White has posted an interesting LINQ query on his blog that shows how to create a Hex Dump in something like 7 lines of code.Of course, this is not production grade code, but it's another good example that demonstrates the expressiveness of LINQ.Here is the code:byte[] ba = File.ReadAllBytes("test.xml");int bytesPerLine = 16;string hexDump = ba.Select((c, i) => new { Char = c, Chunk = i / bytesPerLine })    .GroupBy(c => c.Chunk)    .Select(g => g.Select(c...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Python: undefined reference to `_imp __Py_InitModule4'

    - by Mark
I'm trying to do a debug build of the Rabbyt library using mingw's gcc to run with my MSVC built python26_d.. I got a lot of undefined references which caused me to create libpython26_d.a, however one of the undefined references remains. • datagridview winform tag only brings back the first row value

    - by jvcoach23
I'm using visual studio 2008. I have a datagridview in a winform. I've bound to it using an object Private Sub LoadAllCampers() Dim Os As List(Of LE.Camper) = Nothing Dim Oc As New LE.Camper_Controller Os = Oc.GetCamperData(0) With Me.dgResults .DataSource = Os End With CamperBindingSource.DataSource = Os End Sub I have a tag setup on the ID property within the Camper class. when i double click on a row in teh datagridview, i do a me.dgResults.tag and it always shows the first rows ID value. If i change the ordering within the class, it will display a different value, but it's always the first value in the datagridview. I'm missing something simple to get this working.. just don't know what it is. Hopefully someone can spare a minute.

  • EXC_BAD_ACCESS when simply casting a pointer in Obj-C

    - by AlexChilcott
Hi all, Frequent visitor but first post here on StackOverflow, I'm hoping that you guys might be able to help me out with this. I'm fairly new to Obj-C and XCode, and I'm faced with this really... weird... problem. Googling hasn't turned up anything whatsoever. Basically, I get an EXC_BAD_ACCESS signal on a line that doesn't do any dereferencing or anything like that that I can see. Wondering if you guys have any idea where to look for this. I've found a work around, but no idea why this works... The line the broken version barfs out on is the line: LevelEntity *le = entity; where I get my bad access signal. Here goes: THIS VERSION WORKS NSArray *contacts = [self.body getContacts]; for (PhysicsContact *contact in contacts) { PhysicsBody *otherBody; if (contact.bodyA == self.body) { otherBody = contact.bodyB; } if (contact.bodyB == self.body) { otherBody = contact.bodyA; } id entity = [otherBody userData]; if (entity != nil) { LevelEntity *le = entity; CGPoint point = [contact contactPointOnBody:otherBody]; } } THIS VERSION DOESNT WORK NSArray *contacts = [self.body getContacts]; for (NSUInteger i = 0; i < [contacts count]; i++) { PhysicsContact *contact = [contacts objectAtIndex:i]; PhysicsBody *otherBody; if (contact.bodyA == self.body) { otherBody = contact.bodyB; } if (contact.bodyB == self.body) { otherBody = contact.bodyA; } id entity = [otherBody userData]; if (entity != nil) { LevelEntity *le = entity; CGPoint point = [contact contactPointOnBody:otherBody]; } } Here, the only difference between the two examples is the way I enumerate through my array. In the first version (which works) I use for (... in ...), where as in the second I use for (...; ...; ...). As far as I can see, these should be the same. This is seriously weirding me out. Anyone have any similar experience or idea whats going on here? Would be really great :) Cheers, Alex

  • In the JSON spec, what does "Since the first two characters of a JSON text will always be ASCII characters" mean?

    - by dan gibson
The spec is http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4627.txt?number=4627 It contains this: Encoding JSON text SHALL be encoded in Unicode. The default encoding is UTF-8. Since the first two characters of a JSON text will always be ASCII characters [RFC0020], it is possible to determine whether an octet stream is UTF-8, UTF-16 (BE or LE), or UTF-32 (BE or LE) by looking at the pattern of nulls in the first four octets. What does it mean "Since the first two characters of a JSON text will always be ASCII characters [RFC0020]"? I've looked at RFC0020 but couldn't find anything about it. JSON could be {" or { " (ie whitespace before the quote.

  • Reading a part of a alpha numeric string in SQL

    - by novice
I have a table with one column " otname " table1.otname contains multiple rows of alpha-numeric string resembling the following data sample: 11.10.32.12.U.A.F.3.2.21.249.1 2001.1.1003.8281.A.LE.P.P 2010.1.1003.8261.A.LE.B.B I want to read the fourth number in every string ( part of the string in bold ) and write a query in Oracle 10g to read its description stored in another table. My dilemma is writing the first part of the query.i.e. choosing the fourth number of every string in a table My second query will be something like this: select description_text from table2 where sncode = 8281 -- fourth part of the data sample in every string Many thanks. novice

  • General Purpose Language to build a compiler for

    - by Brownie
Inspired by Eric Sink's interview on the stackoverflow podcast I would like to build a full compiler in my spare time for the learning experience. My initial thought was to build a C compiler but I'm not sure whether it would take too much time. I am wondering if there is a smaller general purpose language that would be more appropriate to implement as a first compiler effort? Or is a C implementation doable on a reasonable timescale (200 hrs)? It is my intention to target the CLR.

  • What IDE to use for Python

    - by husayt
As a Python newbie, it is interesting to know what IDE's ("GUIs/editors") others use for Python coding. If you can just give the name (e.g. Textpad, Eclipse ..) that will be enough. If it is already mentioned, you can just vote for it. But if you can also give some more comparative information, that will be much appreciated. Thanks. • who do you admire in a scientific/technical field [closed]

    - by Tshepang
This off-topic item refers to people with major achievements in fields such as engineering, science, and mathematics. Here's my picks: Eric Drexler for his work on molecular nanotech. His book, Engines of Creations, is mind-blowing. Robert Freitas for his work on molecular nanotech. The breadth of his multi-volume book, Nanomedicine, is impressive. Richard Stallman for promoting Free Software.

  • Did anyone give these smart pointers (auto_any, scoped_any, shared_any) a test drive?

    - by Johann Gerell
I'm investigating smart pointers with "shared" functionality for Windows CE and Mobile, where the VS 2008 tr1 std::shared_ptr cannot be used (due to linkage to a v.9 dll not present on CE, obviously, if I understand it correctly). There's a semi-old MSDN Magazine article with sources from a Microsoftie (Eric Niebler): Achieve More Reliable Resource Management with Our Custom C++ Classes. The reasoning, design and implementation of his shared_any looks solid, but I'm wondering if anyone ever actually tested the lot on any platform (not necessarily WinCe/WM)?
