• How do you keep track of installed/used software/systems/services in your organisations server infr

  I'm interested in any software, experience or guidelines listed that help to deal with listing installed services, their primary user (or business person that is responsible for this service), domain names, ip addresses, ports in your servers. Servers are both Windows and Linux, so licenses are also good to track with all of this information. Scale of the infrastructure in question - 20-50 servers. Currently we have no better idea as to use Excel for it.

  Quick question – do you know any software or way of doing a live screenshot of a window and bring it to the foreground? It’d be like picture link in Excel... My problem is that I am running various tasks in IE and Oracle, and they take forever but i have no way of seeing if they’re done without tabbing back into them all the time. • Explorer's preview push Word in background window

  I have a Windows 7 computer which have a strange behavior: when preview is enabled in explorer, I double-click on any Word document, Word is launched, the document is loaded, and immediatly explorer is in the foreground window (so Word is in the background). The whole process take less than one second. Only with Word. Not Excel or anything. Only on one computer (5 others are identical and installed the same day).

• MS Publisher 2003 - hangs when saving to desktop

  We have a win 7 home prem pc, amd cpu, 8G ram, plenty of free disk space. Whenever user is working in publisher 20003, and tries to save a publisher 2003 document to the desktop, the save as dialog hangs and takes 2-3 minutes to display the desktop save location. I've tested excel 2003, it has no problems immediately displaying the desktop save as location and saving the file.

  Simple question: What's the quickest way to get an en dash (–, Unicode U+2013 EN DASH) in Windows? Note that this question is for all programs, not just Microsoft Word. Even better if it can be copied to the clipboard as a pure Unicode character, with no formatting information (typeface, etc.) so that when I paste it into Word or Excel or other rich text editors, it doesn't carry its format with it.

• Copy and paste RESULTS of a file search

  In order for me to get the results of a file search in a readable format, I use the following command line in a command prompt: dir *.* /s > myResultList.txt I then open that list in Excel, use fixed width format to get rid of all the stuff I don't want and then I have my list. Seems like a lot to do for something so simple. Does anyone out there have any recommendations for something that would work better than this?

• Program that groups windows into tabs

  I recall once stumbling on a program that could take multiple application windows and wrap them inside a large window with a tabbed interface. One use of this, for example, would be to wrap multiple instances of Excel into one window, and thus icon on the taskbar. I couldn't find mention of this program via Google, because of the multiple meanings of the word "window". Does anyone remember, or know of, such a program?

Is the logic/design sound? Anyhow, to the specifics: The Employees object has a method, clean_all_phone_numbers(), which calls clean_phone_number() on each Employee object inside it. Is this bad design? If so, why? Also, is the way I'm calling lookup_all_supervisors() bad? Originally, I wrapped the clean_phone_number() and lookup_supervisor() method in a single function, with a single for-loop inside it. clean_phone_number is O(n), I believe, lookup_supervisor is O(n^2) - is it ok splitting it into two loops like this? In clean_all_phone_numbers(), I'm looping on the Employee objects, and settings their values using return/assignment - should I be setting this inside clean_phone_number() itself? There's also a few things that I'm sorted of hacked out, not sure if they're bad practice - e.g. print_employee() and gd_formatted() both use __dict__, and the constructor for Employee uses setattr() to convert a dictionary into instance attributes. I'd value any thoughts at all. If you think the questions are too broad, let me know and I can repost as several split up (I just didn't want to pollute the boards with multiple similar questions, and the three questions are more or less fairly tightly related).   I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this? • Why is the upgrade manager freezing when upgrading to 13.10

  Earlier today I started to upgrade to 13.10 only to return much much later and notice that the update manager was still running. It seems to be frozen and I am reluctant to hit ctrl+C. I can't launch nautilus using the icon on the launcher. When I try to run it via the terminal, this is what happens: $ nautilus Could not register the application: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: No such interface `org.gtk.Actions' on object at path /org/gnome/Nautilus My printers aren't showing up when I attempt to print.   I get the following error while openning a .xls file in Libreoffice Calc, Ubuntu 12.04 [LibreOffice 3.5.5.2; Build ID: 350m 1 (Build:2)] To overcome this I checked the LibreOffice Security Level to Low under Macro Security (from Tools---- Options--- Security tab. Then I went ahead intalling java by running the following commands from the terminal window (with some tips from various forums) sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libreoffice libreoffice-java-common libreoffice-math libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-java-common Still I got the BASIC runtime error (as in the title), even after clicking Tools---- Options ---- Java and checking the 'Use a Java runtime environment option' and then clicking on 'Sun Microsystems Inc' under listed JRE environments installed. Even I ran the following commands to install latest Java run time environments from terminal window sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre icedtea-7-plugin But still I get the same Basicruntime error (details as in the title bar). This particular file opens perfectly in Microsoft Excel 2007, in Win XP Professional.

• TFS 2008 Web Access Report 100 record limitation

  By default TFS 2008 Web Access has the limit of 100 record when you open any query in report mode. Even if you tried to export the query to excel or PDF you will only get first 100 record exported. To overcome this issue, you have to reconfigure this count in the web.config file Navigate to web access files C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team System Web Access\Wiwa Open web.config modify maxWorkitemsInReportList count to whatever count you need. • Manchester UG Presentation Video

  In July I was invited to speak at the UK SQL Server UG event in Manchester.  I spoke about Excel being a good data mining client.  I was a little rushed at the end as Chris Testa-ONeill told me I had only 5 minutes to go when I had only been talking for 10 minutes.  Apparently I have a reputation for running over my time allocation.  At the event we also had a product demo from SQL Sentry around their BI monitoring dashboard solution.  This includes SSIS but the main thrust was SSAS Then came Chris with a look at Analysis Services.  If you have never heard Chris talk then take the opportunity now, he is a top class presenter and I am often found sat at the back of his classes.   Of late, our broadband internet has been feeling sluggish. A call to the company took way more hold-time than I wanted to spend, and it only fixed the problem for a short while. Thus a perfect opportunity to play with some new tech to solve a problem, in this case, documenting a systemic issue from a service provider. The goal – a log a internet speeds, taken say every 15 min. Recording ping time, upload speed, download speed, and local LAN usage.   The solution A WCF service to measure speeds Internet speed was measured via speedtest.net LAN usage was measured by querying my router for packets received and sent A SQL express instance to persist the data A PowerShell script to invoke the WCF service – launched by Windows’ Task Scheduler An OData WCF Data Service to allow me to read the data MS PowerPivot to show a nice viz (scratch that, the beta expired) LinqPad to get the data, export it to excel Tableau Public to show the viz     Powered by Tableau

  The XNA community has been crazy busy again. It always make me fee like such a slacker collecting all of these notes as I see the tremendous output from people all over the world and it’s incredible and humbling. There are some amazingly skilled people working with XNA. On another not, I’m going to take a minute to get on my soapbox and say, if you are developing ANYTHING and are not using some sort of source/revision control, START IMMEDIATELY. This applies to teams of one. Projects for fun. And “I back up my hard drive” or “I use dropbox!” does NOT count as using source control. You’ll be doing yourself a HUGE favor if you find one, learn to use it and integrate it into your everyday workflow. I personally use Subversion. It’s hosted offsite at xp.dev.com and I use TortoiseSVN as my front end to interface with the repository. It’s simple and easy to use and has saved me from myself so many time. Honestly, get setup with some type of source control immediately. If you don’t understand how, grab another developer that does and have them walk you through setup and the basics of using it. • OpenSwan IPsec connection drops after 30 seconds

  I'm trying to connection from my Linux Mint 16 box to a CloudStack server. Building up the connection works (pings work across the tunnel). However 30 seconds later the IPsec tunnel gets terminated out of the blue. What could cause this consistent behaviour and how to fix it? The tunnel is setup using OpenSwan (U2.6.38/K(no kernel code presently loaded)) with the L2TP IPsec VPN manager from Werner Jaeger 1.0.9. The client is behind a NAT'ed router and the server is on public IP (CloudStack 4.2) Running ipsec verify complains about IPsec support in kernel.   The new ADF Desktop Integration Components demo is available on the OTN and can be downloaded and ran in a standalone way.  The demo follows the same principles of the  ADF Faces and DVT Components demo, presenting the list of all the components available with its corresponding properties as well as feature demos exposing advanced functionality of the framework. It is a great demo that exposes from the very basics of each visual component as well as advanced functionality such as dependent list of values, master-details integration, event handling, integration with ADF Faces and web interfaces and parameter passing between ADF applications to excel.
