    Dear All I need to generate a series of N random binary variables with a given correlation function. Let x = {x_i} be a series of binary variables (taking the value 0 or 1, i running form 1 to N). The marginal probability is given Pr(x_i = 1) = p, and the values should be correlated in the following way E[ x_i x_j ] = const * |i-j|^-alfa where alfa is a positive number. Is it possible to generate a series like this? preferably in python.

  • MySQL Can Connect Remotely but not Locally

    This is a weird problem and I'm not sure what's going on. I installed MySQL on a linux box I have running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I can access mysql via SSH mysql -p and perform all my commands that way. I added a user, and I can use AddedUser to connect remotely from my machine, but not from the local machine. It makes no sense to me...     Today I needed a simple algorithm for checking if a number is a power of 2. The algorithm needs to be: Simple Correct for any ulong value. I came up with this simple algorithm: private bool IsPowerOfTwo(ulong number) { if (number == 0) return false; for (ulong power = 1; power > 0; power = power << 1) { // this for loop used shifting for powers of 2, meaning // that the value will become 0 after the last shift // (from binary 1000...0000 to 0000...0000) then, the for // loop will break out if (power == number) return true; if (power > number) return false; } return false; } But then I thought, how about checking if log2x is an exactly round number? But when I checked for 2^63+1, Math.Log returned exactly 63 because of rounding. So I checked if 2 to the power 63 is equal to the original number - and it is, because the calculation is done in doubles and not in exact numbers: private bool IsPowerOfTwo_2(ulong number) { double log = Math.Log(number, 2); double pow = Math.Pow(2, Math.Round(log)); return pow == number; } This returned true for the given wrong value: 9223372036854775809. Does anyone have any suggestion for a better algorithm?

What I need to figure out is how to be sure that file (in this case a .csv) is actually what it says it is (ex. not an excel file that just got renamed as a .csv).     So I have a form and a submit button that posts the form to an action. But I wanted to show a popup where the user can deny or accept an agreement. Would it add more space complexity to the algorithm? Or it just doesn't require to memoize the state at all. Update: for example, a decision tree is the following: A - B - C - D - E - A | F - G (Goal) Starting from state A. and G is a goal state. Clearly there is a solution under depth 3. However, using my implementation under depth 4, if the direction of search happens to be A(0) -> B(1) -> C(2) -> D(3) -> E(4) -> F(5) exceeds depth, then it would do back track to A, however E is visited, it would ignore the check direction A - E - F - G
