• How do I mklink junction + move content from C:\Program Files to D:\Program Files?

  I have a few applications that absolutely refuse to install into anything but C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86). Changing the registry keys for default install folders doesn't seem to provide any satisfaction and so now I'm wondering about throwing a NTFS junction in there to force these pesky applications to cooperate. There are files currently in use within Windows so it's quite likely I am not going to be able to do this within the active OS. Is there some bootable Windows 7 system tools that would allow me to make this happen? Seems I will need the ability to copy files (with permissions!) from one drive to another, as well as make the junction for Windows.

• Xcode / Interface Builder - better workflow from designer to coder?

  Were dealing with some pretty custom UI elements while building our OSX / Cocoa and iPhone / IPad apps. I was wondering if anyone has good recommendations or tricks for getting a better workflow between UI designers and coders while using Xcode / Interface Builder? It seems that many things require programmatic settings with UI editing in Cocoa... if you stray from the pre-built UI elements then you can't really easily drag-drop build a UI... instead we end up handing off a design doc ( photoshop/illustrator ) and then the poor developer has to deal with recreating this masterpiece in code or by using interface builder - usually a combination of both. This work flow is leading us to not so great results and we have to re-iterate around the UI elements to get them to work better. We love CSS and / or Flash designer to developer workflow where the UI could look exactly as it should and the hand off to developer was more seamless. Is there anyone out there who has some tricks - or insights into getting better workflow when using tools like Xcode / Interface Builder and doing Cocoa apps?

• How to go about scheduling a task in windows 7 to change wireless connection

  This may or not be something that can be done. I cannot find anything on the wireless connection manager built into windows 7 let alone methods for passing params into it. Problem is as follows: I have 2 wireless routers. One provides internet access, the other provides sole access to the local network. Every day at 4am the main system creates a backup in 2 locations. One is a External usb drive, the other is a location on the network. This is all cool if it is remembered to change over to the local network router before leaving. But if it is forgotten the roof will collapse, the walls will burn, and I will be... well you get the idea. Solution: there is already a custom event that fires a automated backup program at 4am everyday. I need someway to force the wireless network to use the correct connection at say 3:58am everyday. Any ideas????

• How to test KVM guest CPU maximum allocation limit?

  Running Ubuntu 13.04 Host and vm Guest. Using virtio for hdd, nic. Max-allocaion CPU cores is 6, minimum is 2. Ive made a vm with virt-manager just to play with, and to test out kvm. Alright, I have a decent understand how the memory balloon driver works, but I still dont know how to test if the guest OS can utilize the max setting for cpu cores. From what i gather, the host will start one thread of qemu for each core allocated per vm. When i run htop inside the guest, it only shows two cores. (also here is the output of cat /proc/cpuinfo: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/93a361545130923537da ) How can I "force" the guest to allocate the other 4 cores so that it can show 6 cores in htop? Is there a way to do this?

• Sound entirely stopped working on Windows 8 on a Macbook Pro

  I am currently running Windows 8 (downloaded from DreamSpark) on a Macbook Pro. This worked fine for a while but suddenly all audio stopped working. When I go to "Playback devices" and hit "Test" on the speakers I get treated with the following message: This also shows up right after I try restarting. I tried disallowing exclusive usage of the devices but it makes no difference. Edit: After some looking around I tried changing the sample rate and bit depth so I would get a dialog screen to force Windows to go around the program that's using it. I did get the dialog but then instead of changing it I got the following error: Edit 2: I narrowed it down to a single service failing to start, the Multimedia Class Scheduler service fails to start with the following error:

• Digital audio does not work on MacBook Pro

  I have a MacBook Pro (8,2). Using a TOSLINK cable I have no digital output. Oddly enough, sometime I can hear a glitch when I plug in the cable or when I give it a gentle wiggle. My guess is that the output is not correctly detecting that I have a digital link. So is there a way to force digital audio output on a MacBook Pro? Some say that in the Audio MIDI Setup there is an option but I can't find it. I am running OS X 10.7.5.

  I want to force ssl client verification for on of my virtual hosts. But get "No required SSL certificate was sent" error, trying to GET something from it.   Hi All, I am developing a REST API that supports two kinds of authentication protocols: login form authentication - for browser based clients. Simple Basic authentication - for non-browser clients. I developed a flow in which unauthenticated requests redirected to the "login form", the problem is that this is an undesired behavior for non-borwser clients! I thought to solve it by decide according to the "User-Agent" what to do: browsers will be redirected to the "login form" and non-browser clients will get the standard 401:Basic Authentication. A.   In windows server 2003 when an Event 529 (logon failure) occures with a logon type of 10 (remote logon), the source network IP address is recorded in the event log. On a windows XP machine, this (and some other details) are omitted. If a bot is trying a brute force over RDP (some of my XP machines are (and need to be) exposed with a public IP address), i cannot see the originating IP address so i don't know what to block (with a script i run every few minutes). The DC does not log this detail either when the logon attempt is to the client xp machine and the DC is only asked to authenticate the credentials. Any help getting this detail in the log would be appreciated.

• Choosing a plotting library for web/browser application

  Hello, I am looking for a plotting/graphing library (mostly to do line plots) for my application. I have been looking at JavaScript APIs (like Google's) but I found them to be slowing down things at client side (I am plotting a quite large number of points). I also found that with client-side libraries, the performance was quite varied depending on the user's computer. With moving to a server-side library I would cut down on this variance, and would have more control over data flow (my data is in a MySQL database). I have then looked at some PHP-based plotting libraries, but a lot of them seem to be "forgotten" (no new version for years). I have been eying pChart, but it has not had an update in almost two years. First, what would you recommend: server-side or client-side approach? Second, what library would you recommend. Paid libraries are definitely an option, as I don't mind paying for quality software that would cut down on my development time. Thanks,

  Currently I am watching the live auth.log and someone is continuously trying the brute force attack for 10 hours. Its my local server so no need to worry but I want to test. I have installed denyhosts. There is already an entry for that IP address in hosts.deny. But still he is trying the attacks from same IP. System is not blocking that. Firstly I don't know how did that IP address get entered in that file. The cable has 2 volume wheels labelled "Game" and "Chat". I would like to be able to control, say Google Hangouts or Skype volume with the chat wheel, and all other audio with the other wheel. • Printing images with same orientation in Windows 7

  I have generated many graphs (GraphViz .dot, about 35 pcs) from a grammar and then I generated .png files from it. All of them are small graphs with a few (2 to 5) nodes on it. I would like to print them, 9 or 12 per page. The problem is that Windows 7 Print Pictures guesses orientation for every image on the grid individually. How can I force Windows 7 Print Pictures to use the same orientation for all pictures (use the files as-is, just do the fitting) What alternative solution can I use for my task which does not include repetitive manual labor?   Forgive me if this is the wrong place but I am curious as to how other programmers feel about this topic: I am currently working on my portfolio site, it is being designed and built in silverlight 4. I initially started off with a typical stylised e-folio theme much like a standard website in terms of layout and flow. As I work more in the concept stages something has struck me. Am I trying to shoe-horn yesterday into today? What I am talking about is UI expectations. I'm all for clean user interfaces but that does not mean they should not take advantage of new concepts in presentation right? If you where to develop a site in silverlight as your own portfolio piece would you stick to the tried and tested "website" feel or would you try to come up with a UI that is intuitive and complements the technology? I feel that UI discussions are all the more important now that all forms of web development are allowing better methods to engage the user.

• Jan 2010 Microsoft update trashed my Win XP (64bit) PC

  I waited until this morning to install these 5 updates. My ancient Win XP (32 bit) PC has no problems but my Win XP 64 bit will not start. From the startup menu none of the 5 options given (e.g. safe mode, last known good configuration, etc) work. After selecting an option, the Windows Logo screen appears. About 9 seconds later a blue screen of death flashes [I can't read the error messages because it's there for about 100 ms] then it cycles through the reboot again. PS: This is a pretty cheap mobo (Ge Force) with an AMD 3 GH chip - but until today it did actually work. What should I do? Reinstall the O/S?

  I'm using flow player 3.1.1 for streaming videos to my browser.The videos are uploaded by the users and they may upload different formats. What will be solution to stream the videos as mp4 , what ever be the format they upload. I'm currently using ffmpeg commands. ffmpeg -i "InputFile.mp4" -sameq -vcodec libx264 -r 35 -acodec libfaac -y "OutputFile.mp4" But video files of more size(say 100mb) are taking a minute more for laoding in to the flowplayer and buffering.   I am forced to use the web version of Outlook at Office 365. I really dislike how it formats e-mail as well as how it handles quoting when replying. In the desktop version of Outlook you can at least force it too display the messages in plain text and then you can manually bottom post/post interleaved. Plain text also changes how it handles quotes: " " is used rather than some braindead RTF version of format=flowed (I like format=flowed when it is implemented without bugs) although the attribution line is completely useless but in the online version I can't find a way to achieve even this. Any ideas? I guess a Greasemonkey script could do this?

  I always Hibernate my PC. Sometimes when I boot, it does not recognize the mouse/keyboard or any USB devices. I've also setup it to go in sleep in 5 minutes. In that case I can't restart the PC so that USB starts working. When I press the Power button then it starts shutdown but asks confirmation twice one is for shutdown by force confirmation and then there is one more. When my USB is disabled I can't input these options. So I switch off the power.   I have defined a new LaTeX environment for excursions in a book chapter I am writing. The environment is multipage and often includes inline images. Moreover, I am using the shaded environment to give the environment a background colour to make it stand out a bit. However, the environment, as shown below, is split up by floating tables and images, which makes the flow of the environment visually more difficult to follow. For example, it is now difficult to see if that floating image or table is part (the missing background colour does not help).
