  • In Asp.Net MVC 2 is there a better way to return 401 status codes without getting an auth redirect

    I have a portion of my site that has a lightweight xml/json REST API. Most of my site is behind forms auth but only some of my API actions require authentication. I have a custom AuthorizeAttribute for my API that I use to check for certain permissions and when it fails it results in a 401. All is good, except since I'm using forms auth, Asp.net conveniently converts that into a 302 redirect to my login page. I've seen some previous questions that seem a bit hackish to either return a 403 instead or to put some logic in the global.asax protected void Application_EndRequest() that will essentially convert 302 to 401 where it meets whatever criteria. Previous Question Previous Question 2 What I'm doing now is sort of like one of the questions, but instead of checking the Application_EndRequest() for a 302 I make my authorize attribute return 666 which indicates to me that I need to set this to a 401. Here is my code: protected void Application_EndRequest() { if (Context.Response.StatusCode == MyAuthAttribute.AUTHORIZATION_FAILED_STATUS) { //check for 666 - status code of hidden 401 Context.Response.StatusCode = 401; } } Even though this works, my question is there something in Asp.net MVC 2 that would prevent me from having to do this? Or, in general is there a better way? I would think this would come up a lot for anyone doing REST api's or just people that do ajax requests in their controllers. The last thing you want is to do a request and get the content of a login page instead of json.

    Hi there I'm trying to get from an Android Uri to a byte array. I have the following code, but it keeps telling me that the byte array is 61 bytes long, even though the file is quite large - so I think it may be turning the Uri string into a byte array, rather than the file :( Log.d(LOG_TAG, "fileUriString = " + fileUriString); Uri tempuri = Uri.parse(fileUriString); InputStream is = cR.openInputStream(tempuri); String str=is.toString(); byte[] b3=str.getBytes(); Log.d(LOG_TAG, "len of data is " + imageByteArray.length + " bytes"); Please can someone help me work out what to do? The output is "fileUriString = content://media/external/video/media/53" and "len of data is 61 bytes". Thanks!

    I've been working on a little Silverlight utility which calls a Silverlight web service. It works from my dev machine (XPsp2).     We have what I think is a fairly standard build process: 1. Developer: Check in code 2. Build: Polls repo, sees change, and kicks off build that: 3. Build: Updates from repo, Builds w/ MSBuild, Runs unit tests w/ nunit, 4. Build: creates installer package Our security team allows us to pull from the build server, but does not allow the build server to push. So we generally rdp in, d/l the installers, and run them, which rules out the slick deployment services, so I would need to generate packages instead. I'd like to use MSDeploy, except that we have the following issues: We're on .net 3.5, and the MSBuild target (Package) that uses MSDeploy requires 4.0. Is there anything I'd need to install other than .net 4.0 RC for this? (Would MSBuild be part of that upgrade?) When I generate packages with MSDeploy, I see that I don't have just 1 file. There's a zip, deploy.cmd, SourceManifest.xml, and SetParameters.xml. What are all the other files for, and why wouldn't they all be in the 'package'? It sounds as if you can create packages by telling the system to look at a working IIS site. But if the packages are build from a CI environment, aren't you basically out of luck here? It feels like they designed some of this for small-scale developers deploying from their dev environment. That's a fine use case, but I'm interested in see what everyone's enterprise-experience is with the tool Any suggestions?

  • C# powershell output reader iterator getting modified when pipeline closed and disposed.

    Hello, I'm calling a powershell script from C#. The script is pretty small and is "gps;$host.SetShouldExit(9)", which list process, and then send back an exit code to be captured by the PSHost object. The problem I have is when the pipeline has been stopped and disposed, the output reader PSHost collection still seems to be written to, and is filling up. So when I try and copy it to my own output object, it craps out with a OutOfMemoryException when I try to iterate over it. Sometimes it will except with a Collection was modified message.     I am automatically creating a PDF from some of our reports in a month-end process. I am running into a problem where ReportViewer.LocalReport can't find my report. Within the project, the report files are in "(project root folder)/Reports/report.rdlc". How do I set ReportViewer.LocalReport.ReportPath so I can reference my report file? I would rather not set the full path because I don't know where it would be installed when installed on the client machines.

M-x shell normally invokes a shell process and pipes stdio through an Emacs buffer and this works well with Cygwin e.g. Cygwin is very slow compared to SUA however, so I am very keen to get this facility working with the EmacsW32 + SUA combo. Any tips, experience, solutions would be appreciated.

    I have a div, that holds a div. like this: <div id='reportHolder' class='column'> <div id='report'> </div> </div> Within the inner div, I add a bunch (7-12) of pairs of a and div elements, like this: <h4><a>Heading1</a></h4> <div> ...content here....</div> The total size of the content, is maybe 200k. Each div just contains a fragment of HTML. After I add all the content, I then create an accordion. like this: $('#report').accordion({collapsible:true, active:false}); This all works fine. The problem is, when I try to clear or remove the report div, it takes a looooooong time, and I get 3 or 4 popups asking "Do you want to stop running this script?" I have tried several ways: option 1: $('#report').accordion('destroy'); $('#report').remove(); $("#reportHolder").html("<div id='report'> </div>"); option 2: $('#report').accordion('destroy'); $('#report').html(''); $("#reportHolder").html("<div id='report'> </div>"); option 3: $('#report').accordion('destroy'); $("#reportHolder").html("<div id='report'> </div>"); No matter what, it hangs for a long while. The call to accordion('destroy') seems to not be the source of the delay. It's the erasure of the html content within the report div. EDIT - fixed typo. ps: this happens on FF3.5 as well as IE8 . Questions: What is taking so long? How can I remove content more quickly?

    Hi there, I'm trying to dive into the quite frankly terrible world of unit testing using Xcode (such a convoluted process it seems.) Basically I have this test class, attempting to test my Show.h class #import <GHUnit/GHUnit.h> #import "Show.h" @interface ShowTest : GHTestCase { } @end @implementation ShowTest - (void)testShowCreate { Show *s = [[Show alloc] init]; GHAssertNotNil(s,@"Was nil."); } @end However when I try to build and run my tests it moans with this error: - Undefined symbols: "_OBJC_CLASS_$_Show", referenced from: __objc_classrefs__DATA@0 in ShowTest.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Now I'm presuming this is a linking error. I tried following every step in the instructions located here: - http://github.com/gabriel/gh-unit/blob/master/README.md And step 2 of these instructions confused me: - In the Target 'Tests' Info window, General tab: Add a linked library, under Mac OS X 10.5 SDK section, select GHUnit.framework Add a linked library, select your project. Add a direct dependency, and select your project. (This will cause your application or framework to build before the test target.) How am I supposed to add my project to the linked library list when all it accepts it .dylib, .framework and .o files. I'm confused! Thanks for any help that is received.

  • How important is PhD research topic to getting a job?

I ask two questions here: The general one (Does a PhD help get a job?) which has been asked elsewhere, and the specific one (Is it possible to get work outside of the specific research field?). Assume I've already decided going to do the phd. I'm just stressing about the research topic. Well, I'm one year out of university (Mechatronics engineering and Software Eng double bachelors), worked for a few months then got retrenched (yay economy!). It's looking less and less likely that I'll get a job worth having with the job market as it is, so I'm thinking about going back to uni to do a PhD. I figure that by the time I'm done, the job market will have improved and hopefully I'll have something on my resume that is more attractive than spending three years doing customer support for accounting software. So, my question is to people who've done PhD's. Would you say that they were worth the effort? How important is the research topic to future job-seeking success? The idea I have is a computer-sciencey/neural-networks/data-mining thing which I think is very interesting, but not a field I want to be in forever. My potential supervisor claims that employers don't care so much about the topic of the research but rather the peripheral skills that are developed through a PhD; time managment, self-restraint, planning and whatnot. How does this mesh with people's real world experience? I'd appreciate any advice before signing my life on the line for the next three years. See also: Should developers go to grad school?     I have a managed class library (say mylib.dll) and a 3rd party managed app (say app.exe) which is using mylib.dll. I have the code of mylib.dll but not of the app.exe. So currently what i do is i build mylib.dll, copy it to app.exe's directory, start app.exe and attach to the process. That way if i put breakpoints in code mylib.dll , i see them being hit. But is there anyway to automatically break in code of mylib.dll whenever any external application calls one of its exposed methods ? ie. Only for entrypoints of the dll. thanks, Mishal

    I'm trying to make an accesible cache of user data using Pyramid doc's "Making A “User Object” Available as a Request Attribute" example. They're using this code to return a user object to set_request_property: from pyramid.security import unauthenticated_userid def get_user(request): # the below line is just an example, use your own method of # accessing a database connection here (this could even be another # request property such as request.db, implemented using this same # pattern). dbconn = request.registry.settings['dbconn'] userid = unauthenticated_userid(request) if userid is not None: # this should return None if the user doesn't exist # in the database return dbconn['users'].query({'id':userid}) I don't understand why they're using unauthenticated_userid(request) to lookup user info from the database...isn't that insecure? That means that user might not be logged in, so why are you using that ID to get there private info from the database? Shouldn't userid = authenticated_userid(request) be used instead to make sure the user is logged in? What's the advantage of using unauthenticated_userid(request)? Please help me understand what's going on here.
