• Why does everyone dislike PHP? [closed]

  I'm primarily a Java/Python programmer, but I just picked up an entry-level job doing web development. I had to learn PHP, and several of my CS friends told me that it would stunt my coding ability/be terrible to program in/murder me in the middle of the night. So far, there have been annoying moments with the language (one particular thing that bugs me is the syntax for calling functions...), but nothing living up to the statements of my friends. I still haven't learned very much about the language. Is their hate justified? Why or why not? A few quotes I've seen about PHP: Haskell is faster than C++, more concise than Perl, more regular than Python, more flexible than Ruby, more typeful than C#, more robust than Java, and has absolutely nothing in common with PHP. • Atheros AR9285 wireless extremely slow

  I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10, and things were going great.. But suddenly, the wifi connection went extremely slow. I have a 20 M connection and normally download files al 1 MB/s or so.. but today i dont get any faster than 120 KB/s. Also, if i use wired connection, the speed goes normal. Following some advice on the net i changed network-manager with wicd, but the issue hasn't gone away Any clues? PD. my wireless card is Atheros AR9285

• How can I get a 1920x1080 resolution?

  I a newbie Linux and have just installed Ubuntu in a dual boot with Windows 7. I love the interface of Ubuntu but unfortunately I can only get a 800x600 or 1024x728 resolution with black bars all around the screen. I have an nVidia GTX 570 graphics card and an Asus 1080p 23" monitor. What may be of note is that I had to use the nomodeset command on installation of the boot would get stuck at a line with "nouveau", which I understand is to do with the drivers. Additionally, when I type in xrandr to the terminal, it comes up with the error message "failed to get size of gamma for output default". I guess what I am looking for here is someone who could explain to me really simply the steps I have to take to get a full 1080p resolution, at which point I am sure i will become a great fan of the OS! • Now you can design ADF applications that look like Fusion Apps

  One possible failure point in ADF applications (and I’ve seen happen) is getting Web designers to build the UI without any knowledge of what ADF does.  The resulting design may look pretty but might be virtually impossible to implement using ADF. To help address this Oracle have released a set of Visio templates which help guide you in “Fusion”/ADF look and feel.  I’ve been lucky enough to have some of our usability teams mock up these templates for some ADF projects I’ve been working on and they are a great help in conceptualising the final applications. • Working out of a vertex array for destrucible objects

  I have diamond-shaped polygonal bullets. There are lots of them on the screen. I did not want to create a vertex array for each, so I packed them into a single vertex array and they're all drawn at once. | bullet1.xyz | bullet1.rgb | bullet2.xyz | bullet2.rgb This is great for performance.. there is struct Bullet { vector<Vector3f*> verts ; // pointers into the vertex buffer } ; This works fine, the bullets can move and do collision detection, all while having their data in one place. Except when a bullet "dies" Then you have to clear a slot, and pack all the bullets towards the beginning of the array. Is this a good approach to handling lots of low poly objects? How else would you do it?

• Wireless connection keeps losing connection

  I'm having this annoying problem with my Ubuntu 12.04.1, upgraded from 10.04. The thing is that my wireless connection keeps going out of connection every 15-20 minutes, and sometimes I have to reboot my laptop. I've started having this problem about 1 month ago, but back in my 10.04 I had the same problem. If anyone has any idea it would be great. Also any info you need about the laptop, please tell me the commands I need to run to give it to you. Thanks and hope you help me.

• Open Source License that prevents re-selling

  I have an open source project that is a add-in to TFS (ie it is for developers and those using TFS.) It is currently using the GPL. But it occurs to me that the GPL does not really represent what I am trying to do with my license. I want my code to be free to everyone who wants to use it. And if you modify it and use it then that is great too. You should not have to open source your modifications. But I would like to block someone from building my code and selling it. Or modifying it and selling it. (Anyone that wants to do that should have to negotiate a separate license with me.) Is there an open source license that prevents re-selling, but allows full non-vending use for a person/company that downloads it?

• What tools exist for designing layouts and pre-production templates for Rails 3 applications?

  I develop Rails 3 applications, but prior to this, my background was a designer (typically making mockups in Photoshop and then breaking them down to HTML5/CSS3). Now, some great tools/templates exist for getting working layouts ready for Rails and other apps quickly, e.g., http://railsapps.github.com/rails-composer/. Many are using CSS Frameworks such as Twitter Bootstrap. I'd like to know whether there is a local app (for Mac) that can design layouts, much the way Dreamweaver would, but that are geared towards being utilized in a Twitter Bootstrap situation alongside Ruby (Rails) or Python apps, etc.

• No mention of ARM versions of Lubuntu .. on the main website?

  Just a question for the Lubuntu team really - I am a huge fan of Lubuntu - thank you and congratulations on creating a great distribution. I am just surprised to notice that, the main website doesn't mention that there are ARM versions - or provide any links to download. Is that because they are 'unofficial' in some sense ? I am running Lubuntu 11.10 on an Allwinner A10 device (the MK802) and it works a treat. Don't "hide your light" guys - tell the world Lubuntu is a cracking OS for ARM systems.

• NDIS Driver Filter VS API Hooking

  I've seen many developers asking for "How to intercept in/out HTTP packets ", "How to modify them on the fly". The most "clean" answer I've seen is to make a kernel-mode-driver filter from the scratch (TDI for XP and earlier winx9 or NDIS for NT systems). An other way, is to use a user-mode-driver like Windivert, also Komodia has a great solution (without writing any single code). The idea behind this introduction is just I want to know is API Hooking can be considered as alternative of writing of whole of driver-filter? writing a driver from the scratch is not an easy task, why just not Hooking the HttpSendRequest or any other API used by the browser? There are many free/commercial libraries to do this in a safe manner (eg: EasyHook, Mhook, Nektra..). I'm not the first who ask, there already Sockscap that uses Hook(DLL injection) to change behavior to other applications and force them to use a Socks proxy, also Form grabbing attack 'used by keylogger..

Today's tip is on Storage and Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Question: I run Oracle Virtual Desktop 3.4.1 on Solaris and use a local ZFS storage pool.  How should I configure my ZFS ARC cache?  Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: Oracle recommends about 5G of ARC cache per template in use to achieve up to a 90% disk read offload. Set your ARC min=max to reserve the maximum amount of your remaining memory for your running VMs. In /etc/system: set zfs:zfs_arc_min = 5368709120 set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 5368709120 The amount you need to reserve will depend on your template but this has proven to be a great start for a typical windows 7 VM running productivity applications.

• Good university for computer science with plans for Game Dev.

  I am starting my Computer science degree at a local community college in Programming using C++. However, i will be transferring to a 4-year university. Does anyone have any insight on university programs? I know Cal State Fullerton has a degree with a minor in Game Dev. however, is that as important as getting a degree from a really great school? if i could shoot for something like Cal Poly would that be better? Or even Stanford or SF state being so close to so many gaming companies up there in the bay area? thank you in advance for any guidance.

• Comments in code

  It is a good practice to leave comments in your code.  Knowing what the hell you were thinking or later intending can be salvation for yourself or the poor soul coming behind you.  Comments can leave clues to why you chose one approach over the other.  Perhaps staged re-engineering dictated that coding practices vary.One thing that should not be left in code as comments is old code.  There are many free tools that left you version your code.  Subversion is a great tool when used with TortoiseSVN.  Leaving commented code scattered all over will cause you to second guess yourself, all distraction to the real code, and is just bad practice.If you have a versioning solution, take time to go back through your code and clean things up.  You may find that you can remove lines and leave real comments that are far more knowledgeable than having to remember why you commented out the old code in the first place.

• how to apt-get install with only minimal components necessary for an application

  apt-get is really great. However, when you want to install an application, you often are forced to install a lot of dependencies which I believe are very often optional. For example, I want to install okular and I'm ask to install 97 packages / 233MB ! That is a lot. I particularly dislike that it wants me to install nepomuk and a lot of other stuff that has nothing to do with PDF viewing per se, and which implies demons, and many of which are clearly optional but not necessary. Question: How to do minimal install with apt-get for a given package, with only the necessary componentents to get the thing run? It's ok if some features disabled at first.

• XUbuntu: Open file browser via "run command" menu

  In older Xubuntu versions, if I entered a path to a directory in the "run command" dialog, a thunar-window was opened showing this directory. I found that to be very handy if I would open f.e.g "/tmp", I just needed to press WindowsKey+r, enter /tmp and press enter, there I was. This was also great for URLs (ftp, http etc) Unfortunately, since 12.04, this doesn't work anymore. It seem as if the "run command" is now integrated with the program finder. It still works when I type "thunar ftp://...." or "thunar /tmp", but it's a bit tedious now. Is there a way to restore the old behavior? Note: I'm running a german localization of Xubuntu - I hope I translated "run command" and "program finder" correctly...

  I work on a team which employs many of the extreme programming practices. We've gone to great lengths to utilize paired programming as much as possible. Unfortunately the practice sometimes breaks down and becomes ineffective. In looking for ways to tweak our process I came across two articles describing parallel pair programming: Parallel Pair Programming Death of paired programming. Its 2008 move on to parallel pairing While these are good resources I wanted to read a bit more on the topic. As you can imagine Googling for variations on parallel pair programming nets mostly results which relate to parallel programming. What I'm after is additional discussion on the topic of parallel pair programming. Do additional references exist that my Google-fu is unable to discern? Has anyone used the practice and care to share here (thus creating a reference)?

• How can I protect my save data from casual hacking?

  What options are there for saving game data in a secure manner? I'm interested in solutions specifically tailored for C++. I'm looking for something that is fast and easy to use. I'm only concerned about storing simple information such as Which levels are and are not unlocked The user's score for each level I'm curious again to know what's out there to use, any good libraries to use that give me nice, secure game data files that the average player can't mess with. I just found this here which looks very nice, but it would be great to get some opinions on potential other libraries/options out there.

• How can I fix intermittent iSight camera functionality on a Macbook Pro 5,2?

  I have a Macbook Pro 5,2 laptop dual booting OSX and Ubuntu. The built-in iSight video camera works only sporadically. By that I mean that sometimes if I boot and try to use the camera it does not work (most of the time) but other times it does. I don't have good repeatable data regarding when it does vs. when it doesn't other than to say that it always seems to work right after I upgrade to a new Linux kernel with the Update Manager and reboot, but then eventually stops working again until I upgrade the kernel again. That is hard to test repeatably, so it's hard to know for sure that that is the case. This has happened consistently with every version of Ubuntu from 10.10 through 11.10. I can get around this by booting into the OS/X partition, since all of the hardware obviously works perfectly on that side of things, but it would be great if I could remain in Ubuntu and do the same thing.   I wish to run todolist 6.3.8 (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/applications/todolist2.aspx) on ubuntu 11.10. I have installed the latest wine and winetricks. I have tried running: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/applications/todolist2.aspx winetricks vcrun2005 winetricks vcrun2008 winetricks vcrun6 Which installed all of the components. When I went to run todolist.exe, it started fine with the "first time wizard" (asking me where to save definitions and what file to open first), and then it stopped saying "the program todolist.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience". What can I do to make this (great) software work on ubuntu? Thanks.

While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD.
