• Searching for the Perfect Developer&rsquo;s Laptop.

  I have been in the market for a new computer for several months. I set out with a budget of around $1200. I knew up front that the machine would be used for developing applications and maybe some light gaming. I kept switching between buying a laptop or a desktop but the laptop won because: With a Laptop, I can carry it everywhere and with a desktop I can’t. I searched for about 2 weeks and narrowed it down to a list of must-have’s : i7 Processor (I wasn’t going to settle for an i5 or AMD. I wanted a true Quad-core machine, not 2 dual-core fused together). 15.6” monitor SSD 128GB or Larger. – It’s almost 2011 and I don’t want an old standard HDD in this machine. 8GB of DDR3 Ram. – The more the better, right? 1GB Video Card (Prefer NVidia) – I might want to play games with this. HDMI Port – Almost a standard on new Machines. This would be used when I am on the road and want to stream Netflix to the HDTV in the Hotel room. Webcam Built-in – This would be to video chat with the wife and kids if I am on the road. 6-Cell Battery. – I’ve read that an i7 in a laptop really kills the battery. A 6-cell or 9-cell is even better. That is a pretty long list for a budget of around $1200. I searched around the internet and could not buy this machine prebuilt for under $1200. That was even with coupons and my company’s 10% Dell discount. The only way that I would get a machine like this was to buy a prebuilt and replace parts. I chose the  Lenovo Y560 on Newegg to start as my base. Below is a top-down picture of it.   Part 1: The Hardware The Specs for this machine: Color :  GrayOperating System : Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bitCPU Type : Intel Core i7-740QM(1.73GHz)Screen : 15.6" WXGAMemory Size : 4GB DDR3Hard Disk : 500GBOptical Drive : DVD±R/RWGraphics Card : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730Video Memory : 1GBCommunication : Gigabit LAN and WLANCard slot : 1 x Express Card/34Battery Life : Up to 3.5 hoursDimensions : 15.20" x 10.00" x 0.80" - 1.30"Weight : 5.95 lbs. This computer met most of the requirements above except that it didn’t come with an SSD or have 8GB of DDR3 Memory. So, I needed to start shopping except this time for an SSD. I asked around on twitter and other hardware forums and everyone pointed me to the Crucial C300 SSD. After checking prices of the drive, it was going to cost an extra $275 bucks and I was going from a spacious 500GB drive to 128GB. After watching some of the SSD videos on YouTube I started feeling better. Below is a pic of the Crucial C300 SSD. The second thing that I needed to upgrade was the RAM. It came with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, but it was slow. I decided to buy the Crucial 8GB (4GB x 2) Kit from Newegg. This RAM cost an extra $120 and had a CAS Latency of 7. In the end this machine delivered everything that I wanted and it cost around $1300. You are probably saying, well your budget was $1200. I have spare parts that I’m planning on selling on eBay or Anandtech.  =) If you are interested then shoot me an email and I will give you a great deal mbcrump[at]gmail[dot]com. 500GB Laptop 7200RPM HDD 4GB of DDR3 RAM (2GB x 2) faceVision HD 720p Camera – Unopened In the end my Windows Experience Rating of the SSD was 7.7 and the CPU 7.1. The max that you can get is a 7.9. Part 2: The Software I’m very lucky that I get a lot of software for free. When choosing a laptop, the OS really doesn’t matter because I would never keep the bloatware pre-installed or Windows 7 Home Premium on my main development machine. Matter of fact, as soon as I got the laptop, I immediately took out the old HDD without booting into it. After I got the SSD into the machine, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. The BIOS was out of date, so I updated that to the latest version and started downloading drivers off of Lenovo’s site. I had to download the Wireless Networking Drivers to a USB-Key before I could get my machine on my wireless network. I also discovered that if the date on your computer is off then you cannot join the Windows 7 Homegroup until you fix it. I’m aware that most people like peeking into what programs other software developers use and I went ahead and listed my “essentials” of a fresh build. • mp3 codecs cannot be installed no software is actually installing

  My Rythm box player cannot play mp3 and iget this error "GStreamer extra plugins cannot be installed on your computer type (i386) Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type" if i go to software center i get this error The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. in shot i have tried to dowload deb softs i still get the error above .so i have downloaded tar.gz and i have installed using terminal but i get another error of gcc c++ insanity check failure! i ask my self what i am supposed to do nothing is working nothing at all yet i have to run my bussiness help urgently before i collapse and choose to die!

• ASSIMP in my program is much slower to import than ASSIMP view program

  The problem is really simple: if I try to load with the function aiImportFileExWithProperties a big model in my software (around 200.000 vertices), it takes more than one minute. If I try to load the very same model with ASSIMP view, it takes 2 seconds. For this comparison, both my software and Assimp view are using the dll version of the library at 64 bit, compiled by myself (Assimp64.dll). What could be the reason for such a difference in performance? The two software are using the same dll Assimp64.dll (compiled in my computer with vc++ 2010 express) and the same function aiImportFileExWithProperties to load the model, so I assume that the actual code employed is the same. How is it possible that the function aiImportFileExWithProperties is 100 times slower when called by my sotware than when called by assimp view? What am I missing? I am not good with dll, dynamic and static libraries so I might be missing something obvious. ------------------------------ UPDATE I found out the reason why the code is going slower. Basically I was running my software with "Start debugging" in VC++ 2010 Express. If I run the code outside VC++ 2010 I get same performance of assimp view. However now I have a new question. Why does the dll perform slower in VC++ debugging? I compiled it in release mode without debugging information. Is there any way to have the dll go fast in debugmode i.e. not debugging the dll? Because I am interested in debugging only my own code, not the dll that I assume is already working fine. I do not want to wait 2 minutes every time I want to load my software to debug. Does this request make sense?

• No rear audio when front jack is connected

  I have Ubuntu 14.04 64bit dual booted. When I connect something on front audio jack then rear audio is not working. I have tried changing analolog-output-headphones.conf file. After changing that alsamixer showing that both centre and surround not muted with full volum.   I installed Ubunto 12.04 onto a brand new Toshiba Satellite C850 64 bit laptop. Wlan does not work, Tries to connect, gives up after some time. $Windows7 works 100%. There appears to be a problem with the driver. The actual hardware is a rtl8188ce chip. The firmware & driver loaded by Ubunto is for the rtl8192ce chip. How can I get and install a driver and firmware for Ubunto 12.04 and rtl8188ce?

• Black Login Screen after installing updates 12.04

  I love my lixux 12.04..till yesterday it installed new updates and i clicked on restart.. As system went to grub all normal & loaded normal..then instead of pretty desktop (auto login turned on) i have black screen asking for login and password.. Why? How i get my desktop back to before? Please help new noob!!! This is due to updates i am sure, nothing in hardware has changed and no other display settings changed.. using AMD diver from there site linux one for my raedeon 6850 and have catalyst driver working fine.. i have tried typing in weird commands but they didnt do much like sudo start lightdm and sudo startx .. didnt do anything just froze.. i dont exactly no what these commands do but something to do with black screen..so i thought id try it.. • How to go automatically from Suspend into Hibernate?

  Is it possible to make Ubuntu go into Hibernate state from Suspend, aka "Suspend Sedation"? For example, my laptop is set up to go into a Suspend once I close the lid. If then I don't use it for entire day, the battery goes flat, because even in suspend mode the hardware still consumes a small amount of power, and the battery eventually discharges. What I want is to be able to tell Ubuntu that even if it is suspended, it still needs to go into Hibernate after some hours of inactivity. Windows can do that. Ubuntu can be programmed to go into Standby or Hibernate on timer, but not both. Update: I guess I need to be more specific. What I am looking for is this: When I close the lid, the laptop is put into Suspend. Then, after a pre-determined time (even if the battery is going strong) if I still don't use it, it should put itself into a Hibernate to save battery power.

• Convert DVD to MKV (et al) without transcoding/recompression

  Like a lot of people, I have a lot of DVDs. But we also have a stupid amount of disk space and a media centre (Boxee) so the DVDs are getting less and less use. It would be nice to convert our DVDs into something more relevant to our needs. I've dabbled with DVD ripping before but whereas I'd usually transcode down to a smaller picture size with a better video compression algorithm, this takes a silly amount of time. I don't have a couple of hours available for each disk. (Sidebar: is there dedicated, Linux-friendly hardware to improve h264 encoding performance?) So I was wondering if there's anything that take the DVD filesystem, De-CSS it, and then stitch together any the VOBs that make up the main part of the film and package that up in a wrapping format like MKV. A bonus would be if it could grab the subtitles and stick them in too but that's not a requirement as Boxee can grab the subtitles online if it needs to.

• Computer SOMETIMES recognizes when headphones are plugged in.

  Whenever I plug my headphones into my computer's front headphone jack, I get a weird situation. Sometimes, the computer will recognize the headphones and work properly. But other times, the computer will play sound through both the headphones and my monitor's speaker. When this happens, the sound section of the system settings does not list the headphones. I can fix the issue temporarily by wiggling the headphone port, but if it gets wiggled the wrong way again, then the issue returns. My PC's case is a Rosewill Challenger. I have tried multiple headphones and the same issue is there. I suspect that this might be a hardware related issue, but if there is any way to fix it with software, that would be helpful.   When I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 i get the grub 1.99 screen that allows me to select ubuntu install, or try ubuntu with out installing. When i select install ubuntu the screen goes black and i can tell the hard drive is running, but there are no on screen prompts. I looked into this problem and attempted to change a few variables by pressing "e" to edit the ubuntu install boot screen I then changed splash to nospash, quiet to noquiet, and add nomodeset at the end of the line that starts with linux before the "--". This still changes nothing when i press F10 to boot. I have tried removing quiet and splash altogether and adding nomodeset, but still to no avail. I am a little frustrated and don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated! • Send arbitrary commands to modem for info

  I have a USB 3G data card and modem. According to the supplier, to check the data balance on the account, I must dial a number like *89# (or whatever) from the handset. The device appears as a ppp0 interface in my network devices. How does one go about issuing commands to the modem to send the commands and receive back the information? UPDATE: OK, I found some help here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/sending-at-commands-to-a-sms-modem-372445/, but firstly, there are 3 ttyUSB devices on my system, and I assume that one of them is the 3G modem, but how can I tell? Secondly, trying to echo something to two of them says that the device is busy, which stands to reason, because I am using it to connect to the internet. Some help, please?

• What technologies are used for Game development now days?

  Whenever I ask a question about game development in an online forum I always get suggestions like learning line drawing algorithms, bit level image manipulation and video decompression etc. However looking at games like God of War 3, I find it hard to believe that these games could be developed using such low level techniques. The sheer awesomeness of such games defy any comprehensible(for me) programming methodology. Besides the gaming hardware is really a monster now days. So it stands to reason that the developers would work at a higher level of abstraction. What is the latest development methodology in the gaming industry? How is it that a team of 30-35 developers (of which most is management and marketing fluff) able to make such mind boggling games? If the question seems too general could you explain the architecture of God of War 3? Or how you would go about producing a clone? That I think should be objectively answerable.

• No signal to monitor after driver install

  After installing 10.10 I used Hardware Drivers (Jockey) to install the graphics driver v11.2 for my ATI HD 5770. After restarting to activate the driver all went well and the boot screen showed up but not like the normal one the text was rough on the edges and after the boot finished the screen turned black and no signal. I have found some forum discussions about that issue but no fix worked for me. I use a DVI to VGA adapter and I have a View Sonic E70F CRT monitor.
