  • TCP and fair bandwidth sharing

    The congestion control algorithm(s) of TCP seem to distribute the available bandwidth fairly between individual TCP flows. Is there some way to enable (or more precisely, enforce) fair bandwidth sharing on a per-host instead of a per-flow basis on a router? There should not be an (easy) way for a user to gain a disproportional bandwidth share by using multiple concurrent TCP flows (the way some download managers and most P2P clients do). I'm currently running a DD-WRT router to share a residential DSL line, and currently it's possible to (inadvertently or maliciously) hog most of the bandwidth by using multiple concurrent connections, which affecty VoIP conversations badly. I've played with the QoS settings a bit, but I'm not sure how to enable fair bandwidth sharing on a per-IP basis (per-service is not an option, as most of the flows are HTTP).

  • Why would 70-persistent-net.rules have no effect?

    I've got a saucy server with a lot of NICs and they end up with weird names like "rename19". I know interface names can be changed by modifying the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file. The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically.     Have a centos 6.3 box running on Parallels and I'm trying to open port 80 to be accesible from outside tried the gui solution from this post and it works, but I need to get it done from a script.     I used sharppcap to capture TCP packets. Now i wanna reconstruct HTTP packet from TCP packets but i don't know how. I read somewhere i can find start of HTTP packet in TCP data... i tried to convert byte[] TCP data to string using this code: string s = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetString(tcp_pack.Data); but the string isn't readable. like a binary file that is opened with notepad. is it because the data is encrypted or code is incorrect? how can i reconstruct HTTP packet from TCP packets?

  • IIS can't load Oracle.Web assembly (for ASP.NET membership provider)

    I am trying to configure an IIS web site to use an Oracle database for ASP.NET membership, but I can't get it to work. IIS doesn't seem to be able to load the assembly containing the Oracle membership provider. That's what I have so far: An Oracle 10g database online and with all the tables for ASP.NET membership created. Windows 2008 R2 Standard with the web server role installed, including support for ASP.NET. Oracle 11g Release 2 ODAC 11.2.0.1.2 installed. The installed components are: Oracle data provider for .NET, Oracle providers for ASP.NET, Oracle instant client. The default web site on IIS (I am using that for testing) has the following web.config file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configuration> <system.web> <membership defaultProvider="OracleMembershipProvider"> <providers> <remove name="SqlMembershipProvider" /> <add name="OracleMembershipProvider" type="Oracle.Web.Security.OracleMembershipProvider, Oracle.Web, Version=2.112.1.2, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342" connectionStringName="OracleServer" /> </providers> </membership> </system.web> </configuration> (Additional attributes on the "add" element omitted for brevity. Also, the connection string is defined for the whole server.) The Oracle.Web.dll file is on the GAC. That's the relevant part of the C:\Windows\Assembly folder: The web site application pool is configured for .NET 2.0, and has 32-bit applications enabled. I have allowed untrusted providers in the IIS' administration.config file (just for the sake of testing, I'll explicitly add the assembly to the trusted providers list later). With all of this setup in place, when I click on the ".NET Users" icon on the IIS manager, I get a warning about the provider having too much privileges, and when I accept I get the following message: There was an error while performing this operation. Details: Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.Web, Version=2.112.1.2, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. So, what am I missing? How can I get the Oracle membership provider to work? Thank you! UPDATE: It seems that the problem is not with IIS itself, but with the IIS administrator only. When using the web site configuration tool provided by Visual Studio, everything works fine.

    Hello, It looks like the final release for ASP.NET MVC 2 has been already around for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I can't find documentation that's intended for MVC 2 exclusively. I've checked Amazon.com (no book yet on MVC2), ScottGu's Blog (only 2 short posts), ASP.NET/MVC website (they've only posted what are alreadi in the ScottGu's blog).     Is it possible to use this Role Provider AspNetWindowsTokenRoleProvider with ASP.NET FORMS Authentication (via this MembershipProvider System.Web.Security.ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider)? It seems to only work with <authentication mode="Windows">, is it possible to use it with FORMS? background -- The objective here is to provide an ASP.NET Forms UX while using Active Directory as the back-end authentication system. If there is another, easy way to do this using built-in technologies, that's great and I'd like to hear about that as well.

    Assume I want to generate an element similar to this in ASP.NET MVC 2: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(p => p.FooBar)%> Is there an overload or way I can get ASP.NET MVC 2 to only generate a name attribute and not an ID attribute? I can have it generate a blank id with <%= Html.TextBoxFor(p => p.FooBar)%>, new { id = "" }, but I would like to generate the element with no ID at all.

    There are lots of articles and discussions about the differences between ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC that compare the relative merits of the two frameworks. I have a different question for anyone who has experience using WebForms that has since moved to MVC: What is the number one thing that WebForms had, that MVC doesn't, that you really miss? Edit No-one has mentioned the WebForms validation controls. I am now working on some code that has a few dependant validation rules and implementing client-side validation for these is proving slow.

    I have an ASP.NET .ASMX web service that I converted to .NET 4.0 with VS 2010 and is hosted in an IIS 7.5 (Windows 7) application pool. I have a simple html page that I use to make the AJAX request to the web service. How can I debug what's going on in the web service in Visual Studio? Because the HTML ajax request doesn't seem "tied in" to the web service, which is located on my local IIS service, I can't figure out how to debug it.
