• "shell not found" on start of backtrack 5

  I am using backtrack5 in VMware on my system. I was trying to change my default shell to ksh. After executing the 'chsh' command. On restarting the OS, it shows "Cannot execute ksh: no such file or directory", which apparently because of giving a bad path while changing shell. Because of this I am not able to start the OS, as I have no terminal to interact with (cannot start the GUI). Now I need to restore the previous shell, but I don't have any access to the terminal.   I installed Ubuntu in a VM using VirtualBox, and after a few hours of Googling all the things I had to install and configure for the rest of the environment, I am finally up and running with a Ruby on Rails IDE and have MySql up and running. After I start up the Ubuntu VM, I have to go to a terminal window and do this to start MySql: /etc/init.d/mysql start So that works fine, but, since I am such a GUI person, I’m wondering how I can create an icon on the Ubuntu Desktop that I can click on to launch this command. Can you tell me how to do that?

  Mails in outlook have a relevance-field that can be displayed as a column in the inbox. How do one set it? Edit: More precisely, how are the values of custom e-mail-fields changed through the outlook 2007 gui? Here relevance and a custom field 'Score' is shown in my inbox, but all emails have blank values. The context-menu of emails give access to "Message Options...". I was hoping the custom fields would be available there.

• Alternative to Canned Response in Gmail

  I have a mailbox that i share with a colleague. We want a good way to store templates for e-mails that we send often like answers to common questions and so on. We have tried to use Canned Response to store this templates but that GUI really sucks and is kind of unusable for other things then signatures and stuff. Is anyone aware of a good alternative to this? We need to be able to share this templates. So it must be stored "in the cloud". We want "as easy access" as possible directly in gmail. A firefox plugin would be fine since we both use Firefox. We use both Mac and PC so the solution must be cross-platform. Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

• Windows 7, file properties, date modified, how do you show seconds?

  Anyone know a way to immediately show the seconds of a file's date modified property in the GUI? So if you create a file, any file in any directory, right-click and choose Properties, the date modified (if it's recent) will say something like "dd/mm/yyy hh:mm, one minute ago" - reminder this is in Windows 7. Windows XP did it normally. Then they changed something. If you wait a while, eventually you'll see the seconds, I'm not sure how long a while is, but this is incredibly annoying if you want to troubleshoot something that relies on the seconds of timestamps... is there a setting? registry key I can change perhaps? I'm literally using Chrome, pasting in the path of the directory to be able to see the seconds quickly (as a workaround) but would be nice to be able to use Win7.

  I have a core Hyper-V Server 2012 that I am remotely managing from a Windows 8 client. I can connect in Hyper-V Manager, Server Manager, and MMC. However, I don't understand how I can manage the physical hard drive (for ex, deleting vhdx files, creating folders, etc) from my Windows 8 client. I tried to attach the remote share as follows: q: \\MyServer\c$ It said command completed successfully, but I don't see the drive on my client's Explorer. • Gnome+NX clipboard behavior; auto-copy on select?

  I am having issues with the Gnome(/Linux/Debian+Ubuntu) clipboard when connected remotely; it's default behavior appears to be to automatically add text to a clipboard buffer when that text is selected. This is not usually a problem, until I need to log into one of these systems remotely (w/ GUI), and attempt to use a shared clipboard. If I 'copy' text on the local machine (destined to replace some text on the remote machine), that copy buffer is overwritten as soon as I select the text on the remote machine to be replaced. Is there some way around this? It sort of drives me nuts. Thanks! UPDATE: This is really an NX server issue; X11 supports multiple clipboards ("selections": clipboard, primary. secondary; see this excellent article) that behave differently, and it appears that my problem is related to how NX server translates this over to the host machine.

I have the latest VirtualBox version (4.1.22) and I have MacOS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard running in a vm guest. • How to open a program on particular desktop?

  When I start GUI program, it's window appears appears on currently active desktop (essentially, on random desktop). How to make it to appear on the specified desktop? For example, at startup I want certain programs to be started and distributed to desktops. I've already set up config file of openbox to force some programs to always start on specific desktop. Ideally it should be like: start_on_desktop 1 gnome-terminal --tab -e program1 --tab -e program2 start_on_desktop 2 gnome-terminal --tab -e program3 --tab -e program4 start_on_desktop 3 firefox It should be able to start the same program on other desktop. Also dislike when I start program while being on desktop X then switch to desktop Y and SUDDENLY a program which should be on X appears on Y. When I start lots of programs on and switch often between desktops they end up being in chaos and I need to collect them together and redistribute sanely. Also I want the first initial gnome-terminal to be on desktop 3, but I also want subsequent gnome-terminals to be on the desktop where I pressed the keystroke (also configured in openbox) that launches gnome-terminal.

  As a Linux user, I have been quite comfortable with CLI and TUI tools, but I miss the little scrollbar present in almost every GUI program. It has always been easier for me to know how long the file is and where I am from the scrollbar instead of "9752 lines, 24%". What I expect is a ASCII scrollbar that looks like | | | | # # # | | | and I can configure to appear on the left or right (and if on the left, the relative position to line numbers and fold marks). Is there already a Vim plugin to do this, or how can I write my own one? Vim's plugin framework doesn't seem to support such UI modifications directly.

  My Internet access is delivered through an authenticated proxy. This is setup correctly in the "Internet Options" control panel applet and all browsing/GUI apps work fine. For cmd, proxy settings are typically set by exporting http_proxy. The applications I'm trying to use are git and Putty's pscp.exe. I've tried the following syntax to no avail: set http_proxy=http://username:[email protected]:port/ I've also experimented with Netsh.exe and ProxyCfg.exe with no luck. • Power outage, Server 2K3 remains on "applying computer settings"

  My reward for clicking the "test" button in the APC UPS software was that it completely cut the power to my SQL server. The server promptly rebooted, the SQL service is running (verified by the app on another server that queries it), but the GUI has remained on "applying computer settings" for 20 minutes and counting, and it forbids RDC connections. Since SQL is up, it is fulfilling its key role, but it's obviously not right. What step to take next? Wait longer? Hardware is a Dell Poweredge 2850, internal RAID10.

  I want to delete some files/directories from my Time Machine Partition using rm, but am unable to do so. I'm pretty sure the problem is related to some sort of access control extended attributes on files in the backup, but do not know how to override/disable them in order to get rm to work. An example of the error I'm getting is: % sudo rm -rf Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir: Directory not empty rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir/somefile: Operation not permitted There are a number of reasons I do not want to use either the Time Machine GUI or Finder for this. If possible, I'd like to be able to maintain the extended protection for all other files (I'd like not to disable them globally, unless I can re-enable once I've done my work).

• What are the major distinctions between PureDarwin and FreeBSD?

  I'm looking to install a different unix on my workstation to acquire some perspective on GNU/Linux and out of curiosity. I have narrowed my options down to these two. The reason for considering PureDarwin is because I have very little experience with Apple's products. So my question is will installing and using PureDarwin give me a closer understanding of OSX than would running FreeBSD? What I have in mind are day to day routines like adding users, installing software and configuring various aspects of the underlying OS. I know that the GUI of OSX would not be available, but that is not a concern. As a secondary, less important question, can I buy OS X in the apple store and run it in a virtual machine or does that violate their EULA?

  I've installed VirtualBox 4.1.8 on a Windows 7 Ultimate host system. I've set up an Arch Linux VM that starts just fine from the VirtualBox GUI. However, when I try to start it with VBoxHeadless --startvm <vm_name> it prints the following Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 4.1.6 (C) 2008-2011 Oracle Corporation All rights reserved. and then it just sits there. I never get the VRDE server is listening on port 3389 message like when I start a headless VM on a Linux machine. Do I have to configure anything else in order to get the VRDE server to run?

  I have several Fedora 13 servers that have to connect through an http proxy for yum updates. All port 80 traffic has to be routed through this proxy. I have setup the proxy server in the network settings GUI. I can browse the internet just fine. I have also setup my proxy information in /etc/yum.conf as follows: proxy=http:proxy.largecorp.corp/accelerated_pac_base.pac proxy_user=user proxy_password=password I then added the export HTTP_PROXY="http:proxy.largecorp.corp/accelerated_pac_base.pac" to /etc/bashrc and sourced the file. When i run yum update: Loaded plugins:presto, refresh-packagekit Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) fro repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again. All of the repo urls are the defaults, as this is a fresh install.

  I need a unixy environment for development purposes. I hate doing things on windows but it is more stable for daily use and I don't have a mac, so I'm having to use windows (7). I want to run freebsd in a virtual machine, configure it to be the localhost server, be able to connect using ssh (within my home-network) and be able to install vbox guest addons. If guest additions aren't the best, I can use solaris or linux flavours. I need no gui. I don't know anything about network stuff, so I need a detailed explanation from vise people here, or a nice doc to read. Edit : To be more specific as requested, I use following on unices: *django 1.4 *apache *python (2.7) *emacs *mysql *probably node.js *bash scripting I use windows to be able to do daily things easily, like connecting to my tablet, browsing and learning java. And I don't want to use linux as my desktop os, beacuse it gets broken a lot, it's annoying to maintain wlan problems and some more.

• Black screen with cursor after BIOS screen

  Here is a weird one, Got computer with Windows XP. It's getting stuck on a black screen with cursor blinking. What did I do: - Boot from installation CD (recovery option - command line): chkdsk C: /R copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\ fixmbr fixboot Chkdsk showed 0 bad sectors and no problems during scan. dir on C:\ shows all directories and files in place (Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings). BIOS shows correct boot drive. Still does not boot. Not sure what to think of. Please help. UPDATE: Just performed these steps: Backed up current disk C: (without MBR) using True Image to external hard drive Ran Windows XP clean installation with deleting all partitions and creating new one. Hard drive booted fine into Windows GUI installation!!! Then: I interrupted installation. Booted from True Image recovery CD and restored archive of disk C to an new partition. Same issue with black screen.

• Move and clone VirtualBox machines with filesystem commands

  I know of 2 ways to clone a VirtualBox machine on a linux host, one is by using the VirtualBox gui and exporting and re-importing as Appliance (in the file menu of VirtualBox). The other is by cloning only the virtual disk containers: VBoxManage clonevdi source.vdi target.vdi (Taken from http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?p=853#p858 ) I would have to create a new VM afterwards and use the cloned virtual disk. Is there a way I can just copy a virtual disk and the and do the rest by hand? I'd have to manually edit the ~/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml and insert a new disk and a new machine: Can I just make up UUIDs or how would this work? I would very much prefer this hardcore method of doing things as it allows me to freely and rapdily backup, restore, move or clone machines. Or ist there a better way to do this?

  Hi everybody, I have spent some time testing out different backup solutions for my small home office during the last weeks, but still haven't found anything that have been working out too well yet. We can definitely work with a non-GUI script if that's what it takes, if only the requirements are fulfilled: Upload to Amazon S3 Europe. We get unbelievable slow uploading speed to US, so uploading 400+ GB of data will not be happening anytime this year... Incremental backups - only changed files shall be uploaded or we will have a big bill from Amazon in the end of each month.. Files should not be uploaded in one big per-folder archive. This is not efficient at all, since if we change one file in a subfolder, a huge two-digit GB sized file would have to be uploaded during next backup. Not good for economy again, or traffic overhead on our internet connection. What options are available to us? Thanks!

This is my mindset about different interfaces: TV remote is an interface between user and TV. It is an existing entity but useless (doesn't provide any functionality) by itself. All the functionality for each of those buttons on the remote is implemented in the Television set. Interface: It is a "existing entity" layer between the functionality and consumer of that functionality. An, interface by itself is doesn't do anything. It just invokes the functionality lying behind. Now depending on who the user is there are different type of interfaces. I thought we are talking at the binary level. Where did languages come in between? anyway, I've downloaded the [PDF] System V Application Binary Interface Edition 4.1 (1997-03-18) to see what exactly it contains. Well, most of it didn't make any sense. Why does it contain 2 chapters (4th & 5th) which describe the ELF file format.Infact, these are the only 2 significant chapters that specification. Rest of all the chapters "Processor Specific". Anyway, I thought that it is completely different topic. Please don't say that ELF file format specs are the ABI. It doesn't qualify to be Interface according to the definition. I know, since we are talking at such low level it must be very specific. But I'm not sure how is it "Instruction Set Architecture(ISA)" specific? Where can I find MS Window's ABI? So, these are the major queries that are bugging me.

• How can I re-create Microsoft Cluster Service resource groups on a different cluster?

  I use Microsoft Cluster Service on a cluster of Windows Server 2003 machines containing several dozen resource groups. In the process of migrating to newer hardware, I would like move resources to the new machines on resource group at a time spread out over a few days to ease the migration and minimize risk. I was wondering of there was a smarter way to do this than manually re-creating resources on the new and then deleting them on the old cluster? The cluster has already been set up properly, the only missing is the resource groups and the resources they contain (IP, network names, services...). I have looked through the options of the cluster admin GUI and cluster.exe's commandline options, but haven't found anything like an import/export feature to copy over the configuration of a resource or entire resource group. Does something like this exist?

• recommendations for disk -> usb backup software

  Recently I lost a tape drive and rather than repair the unit I decided that backups to usb external drives would be cheaper. In the past I used NTBackup and figured that the new server 2008 R2 backup wbadmin utility would be able to meet my needs. It does not. I am looking for recommendations for another utility that i can use. My requirements are: -backup local disk in addition to files on a network share -scheduled task integration (or some gui options to manage schedule) -non-incremental backup Basically I could do this all with WBAdmin if it just supported network shares. I saw some links that described attaching a vhd pointed to a network share but I am trying to avoid hacks like that. If i'm going to do all that trouble I'd just as well manually copy the directories over myself. If anyone has any software suggestions that might make this task easier for me let me know please. I am considering BackupAssist but can only find a few reviews here and there for it.
