• The Ins and Outs of Effective Smart Grid Data Management

  Oracle Utilities and Accenture recently sponsored a one-hour Web cast entitled, "The Ins and Outs of Effective Smart Grid Data Management." Oracle and Accenture created this Web cast to help utilities better understand the types of data collected over smart grid networks and the issues associated with mapping out a coherent information management strategy. • Filtering data in LINQ with the help of where clause

   LINQ has bought with itself a super power of querying Objects, Database, XML, SharePoint and nearly any other data structure. The power of LINQ lies in the fact that it is managed code that lets you write SQL type code to fetch data.  Whenever working with data we always need a way to filter out the data based on different condition. In this post we will look at some of the different ways in which we can filter data in LINQ with the help of where clause. Simple Filter for an array. Let’s say we have an array of number and we want to filter out data based on some condition. Below is an example int[] numbers = { 5, 4, 1, 3, 9, 8, 6, 7, 2, 0 }; var lowNums =                 from num in numbers                 where num < 5                 select num;   Filter based on one of the property in the class. • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time? No - Crash Yes - Works, but in Display tab: DirectDraw Acceleration: Disabled Direct3D Acceleration: Not Available AGP Texture Acceleration: Not Available If I click "Run 64-bit DxDiag", all three are "Enabled". I should also note that I've tried the following steps as Microsoft suggests, but I'm not able to do so as the "Change Settings" button is disabled. Some programs run very slowly—or not at all—unless Microsoft DirectDraw or Direct3D hardware acceleration is turned on. To determine this, click the Display tab, and then under DirectX Features, check to see whether DirectDraw, Direct3D, and AGP Texture Acceleration appear as Enabled. If not, try turning on hardware acceleration. Click to open Screen Resolution. Click Advanced settings. Click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full. • XAF DSL Tool Needs a new Team Lead

  I have enjoyed my time on this project and have used it in several production projects.  However, with the enhancements in Visual Studio 2010 and the Entity Framework, the DSL tool doesn’t make sense for me to support at this time.  With that said, I am looking for someone who has interest to continue the project if they so desire.  I have moved my attention to creating a new project at Entity Framework Extensions for XAF.  We are converting the current DSL tool into the Entity Framework extensions.  The same code generation and everything else work.  However, the visual design surface is so much easier to work with.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Also, please take a moment to look at the new project.  This is where all my effort going forward will be focused. With identity theft and digital fraud still on the rise, this session should be an entertaining, and sobering, education on the threats facing businesses and customers around the world. A great way to start Wednesday.1:00 p.m. - Google Wave: Will it replace e-mail as we know it today? Location: SURF EBy many assessments (my own included), Google Wave is a bit of an open collaboration failure. It may seem like an odd reason for me to be excited about this session, but I'm looking forward to the chance to revisit the technology. Also, this is a great case study in connecting free, available Internet tools to existing enterprise computing environments--an issue that IT strategists must contend with as workers spreads out and choose their own productivity tools.

• 'Other' Features in a programming language

  Online (i cant remember where) i saw someone mention he wishes programming language has more built in features for tools like documentation and source control. Now i dont understand what needs to be built in for source control since tools like git (sorry but i dont have much experience with others) has everything i need and is very easy to use. Documentation i can understand, perhaps the ability to generate remote procedures calls from source to some kind of IDL would be cool. But really i dont understand what features a programming language can/should have that isnt tied with code generation and syntax (except the two i mention when it comes to libraries). What ideas do you guys have? What is your wishlist?

  I'm trying to get a new installation of Mythbuntu working. So far, everything is OK except the remote. The sensor for the remote is on my Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1250. Any suggestions on how to fix or further diagnose this?

• Lubuntu 12.04 PPC slow startup and shutdown

  I've installed Lubuntu 12.04 on a Powerbook G4 (PowerPC 1GHz, 1 gb ram, Geforce MX 440). Everything works perfectly except the startup and shutdown. To startup my system I have to wait about 3 minutes (and similar time to shutdown) Giving a look @ /var/log/dmesg I noticed the following [drm] nouveau 0000:00:10.0: Detected an NV10 generation card (0x017900a5) checking generic (b8004000 151800) vs hw (b8000000 80000000) fb: conflicting fb hw usage nouveaufb vs 0Ffb NVDA,Displ - removing generic driver The only issue concerns Nouveau ... inside my /var/log/kern.log says what follows BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! I've booted passing the "nouveau.modeset=0" parameter and the system boot in 15 seconds but with 4 bit graphics -- Any idea how to fix? Thanks in advance for any help

• Java EE/GlassFish Adoption Story by Kerry Wilson/Vanderbilt University

  Kerry Wilson is a Software Engineer at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He served in a consultant role to design a lightweight systems integration solution for the next generation Foundations Recovery Network using GlassFish, Java EE 6, JPA, @Scheduled EJBs, CDI, JAX-RS and JSF. He shared his story at the JavaOne 2013 Sunday GlassFish community event - check out the video below: Kerry outlined some of the details of the implementation and emphasized the fact that Java EE can be a great solution for applications that are considered small/lightweight. He mentioned the productivity gains through the modern Java EE programming model centered on annotations, POJOs and zero-configuration - comparing it with competing frameworks that aim towards similar productivity for lightweight applications. Kerry also stressed the quality of the excellent NetBeans integration with GlassFish and the need for community self-support in free, non-commercial open source projects like GlassFish.
