• How to recognise vehicle licence / number plate (ANPR) from an image?

  Hi all, I have a web site that allows users to upload images of cars and I would like to put a privacy filter in place to detect registration plates on the vehicle and blur them. The blurring is not a problem but is there a library or component (open source preferred) that will help with finding a licence within a photo? Caveats; I know nothing is perfect and image recognition of this type will provide false positive and negatives. I appreciate that we could ask the user to select the area to blur and we will do this as well, but the question is specifically about finding that data programmatically; so answers such as 'get a person to check every image' is not helpful. This software method is called 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition' in the UK but I cannot see any implementations of it as libraries. Any language is great although .Net is preferred. • How to auto-increment reference number persistently when NSManagedObjects created in core-data.

  In my application i am using core-data to store information and saving these data to the server using web-connectivity i have to use MySql. Basically what i want to do is to keep track of number of NSManagedObject already created and Whenever i am adding new NSManagedObject, based on that counting it will assign the class a Int_value which will act as primary_key in MySql. For examaple, there are already 10 NSManagedobjects, and when i will add new one it will assign it "11" as primary_key. these value will have to be increasing because there is no deleting of NSManagedObject. From my approach its about static member in applicationDelegate whose initial value can be any integer but should be incremented by one(like auto-increment) everytime new NSManagedObject is created and also it should be persistent. I am not clear how to do this, please give me suggestions. Thanks in advance.

  I have a need to run a piece of code every 120 seconds. I am looking for an easy way to do this in VBA. I know that it would be possible to get the timer value from the Auto_Open event to prevent having to use a magic number, but I can't quite get how to fire off a timer to get something to run every 120 seconds. I don't really want to use an infinite loop with a sleep if I can avoid it. • How do I select the number of distinct days in a date range?

  I'm trying to use the T-SQL function DATEDIFF to select the number of distinct dates in a time period. The following query: SELECT DATEDIFF(DAY, '2012-01-01 01:23:45', '2012-01-02 01:23:45') selects 1, which is one less than I want. There are two distinct dates in the range: 2012-01-01 and 2012-01-02. It is not correct to add one to the result in the general case. The following query: SELECT DATEDIFF(DAY, '2012-01-01 00:00:00', '2012-01-02 00:00:00') selects 1, which is correct, because there is only one distinct date in the range. I'm sure there is a simple bit of arithmetic that I'm missing to calculate this. Can someone help me?

• Is there a limit on the number of mutex objects that can be created in a Windows process?

  I'm writing a c# application that can create a series of request messages. Each message could have a response, that needs to be waited on by a consumer. Where the number of outstanding request messages is constrained, I have used the windows EVENT to solve this problem. However, I know there is a limit on how many EVENT objects can be created in a single process, and in this instance, its possible I might exceed that limit. Does anyone know if there is a similar limit on creation of mutex objects or semaphores? I know this can be solved by some sort of pool of shared resources, that are grabbed by consumers when they need to wait, but it would be more convenient if each request message could have its own sync object.

• Java multi-threading - what is the best way to monitor the activity of a number of threads?

  I have a number of threads that are performing a long runing task. These threads themselves have child threads that do further subdivisions of work. What is the best way for me to track the following: How many total threads my process has created What the state of each thread currently is What part of my process each thread has currently got to I want to do it in as efficient a way as possible and once threads finish, I don't want any references to them hanging around becasuse I need to be freeing up memory as early as possible. Any advice?

• What's a reasonable number of rows and tables to be able to join in MySQL?

  I have one table that maps locations to postal codes. For example, New York State has about 2000 postal codes. I have another table that maps mail to the postal codes it was sent to, but this table has about 5 million rows. I want to find all the mail that was sent to New York State, which seems simple enough, but the query is unbelievably slow. I haven't been able to even wait long enough for it to finish. Is the problem that there are 5 million rows? I can't help but think that 5 million shouldn't be such a large number for a computer these days... Oh, and everything is indexed. Is SQL just not designed to handle such large joins?

• Storing n-grams in database in < n number of tables.

  If I was writing a piece of software that attempted to predict what word a user was going to type next using the two previous words the user had typed, I would create two tables. Like so: == 1-gram table == Token | NextWord | Frequency ------+----------+----------- "I" | "like" | 15 "I" | "hate" | 20 == 2-gram table == Token | NextWord | Frequency ---------+------------+----------- "I like" | "apples" | 8 "I like" | "tomatoes" | 12 "I hate" | "tomatoes" | 20 "I hate" | "apples" | 2 Following this example implimentation the user types "I" and the software, using the above database, predicts that the next word the user is going to type is "hate". If the user does type "hate" then the software will then predict that the next word the user is going to type is "tomatoes". However, this implimentation would require a table for each additional n-gram that I choose to take into account. If I decided that I wanted to take the 5 or 6 preceding words into account when predicting the next word, then I would need 5-6 tables, and an exponentially increase in space per n-gram. What would be the best way to represent this in only one or two tables, that has no upper-limit on the number of n-grams I can support?

• SQL Server Query Editors - any that warn of number of rows to be changed?

  We're using SQL Server 2000 Query Analyser, and one issue we have is that very occasionally, when a user is updating our live database, they insert the incorrect/no(!) where clause. I know, not good, but it happens. Are there any editors that will warn of the number of rows that might be changed (if that is even possible) or even a way to configure an editor, if it is connected to a certain database, to prompt for confirmation before the query is run? We have a way to recover our data in the cases where we run an incorrect query, but it takes time, and I'm just seeing if there are any ways to catch the error, or at least give the user a second chance.   I'm a C++ Programmer trying to teach myself Haskell and it's proving to be challenging grasping the basics of using functions as a type of loop. I have a large number, 50!, and I need to add the sum of its digits. It's a relatively easy loop in C++ but I want to learn how to do it in Haskell. I've read some introductory guides and am able to get 50! with sum50fac.hs:: fac 0 = 1 fac n = n * fac n - 1 x = fac 50 main = print x Unfortunately at this point I'm not entirely sure how to approach the problem. Is it possible to write a function that adds (mod) x 10 to a value and then calls the same function again on x / 10 until x / 10 is less than 10?   All, I have an SMS gateway application running on my server that passes incoming SMS messages to a php script. That script writes the data to a text file. Certain aspects of the message can be extracted as variables - for example: Message content: $msgdata Sender: $originator Time: $receivedtime etc... Using the script below I can easily write the message to a text file but it will write the data of every SMS that comes in. I only want to write to a text file if the $originator variable is a certain telephone number (e.g 07123456321) $date = date("d.m.Y H:i:s"); $msgdata = $_REQUEST["msgdata"]; $myFile3 = "test.txt"; $fh = fopen($myFile3, 'a') or die("can't open file"); $stringData3 = "$date - $msgdata\n"; fwrite($fh, $stringData3); fclose($fh); Your assistance is bery much appreciated. • iPad: How Do I Limit the Number of Tabs in UITabBarController?

  I'm converting an iPhone app to a universal app, which leaves me with a UITabBarController as the root view controller for a UISplitViewController. That is, the tab bar appears at the bottom of the left-hand view when the iPad is in landscape mode. On the iPhone, the system automatically limited the number of tabs shown in the tab bar to 5. But on the iPad simulator (which is all I have at the moment), my tab bar has 8 tabs, including the More tab. What gives? Thanks. Update: Since I had no luck finding an answer to this question, I gave up on using a tab bar interface in my iPad-flavored app. Instead, I added one more level to the navigation controller drill-down. That ends up working fine for this app.

• What is the maximum number of controls that a VBA form can hold?

  I'm currently building an Excel 2003 app that requires a horribly complex form and am worried about limitations on the number of controls. It currently has 154 controls (counted using Me.Controls.Count - this should be accurate, right?) but is probably only about a third complete. The workflow really fits a single form, but I guess I can split it up if I really have to. I see evidence in a Google search that VB6 (this usually includes VBA) has a hard limit of 254 controls in a form. However, I created a dummy form with well over 1200 controls which still loaded and appeared to work just fine. I did get some 'out of memory' errors when trying to add specific combinations of controls though, say 800 buttons and 150 labels, leading me to think that any limit might be affected by the memory requirements of each type of control. Does anyone have any information that might help ensure that I or, more importantly, other users with differing environments don't run into any memory issues with such a large form?

• How to limit number of displayed items in html.dropdownlist?

  I have a html.dropdownlist on my webpage as follows: <%=Html.DropDownList("MyDropDown", Model.Data, new { @class = "dropdown"})%> I am populating the dropdown with ~80 items. The issue is that when I click the dropdown the list of items is rendered from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. How can I set up the dropdownlist so that it only displays a maximum of 20 items when the dropdown menu is clicked (i.e. user needs to scroll down to see items 21 - 80)? I was anticipating (!) that there would be a html.dropdownlist property to control the number of displayed items that would allow something like the following e.g.: <% =Html.DropDownList("MyDropDown", Model.Data, new { @class = "dropdown", rows ="20"}) %> From research I have been doing on the msdn website it appears that there is no such property and that each browser has its own rules of how many items are displayed in a dropdownlist (?). I am using IE6 and IE7.

  Hi, I have an application that is deployed on tomcat on server A and sends queries to a huge variety of mssql databases on an server B. I am concerned that my application could overload this mssql database server and would like some way to preventing it making requests to connect to any database on that server if some arbitrary number of connections were already in existence and unclosed. I am looking at using connection pooling but am under the impression that this will only pool connections to a specific database on the mssql server, I want to control the total of these combined connections that will occur to many different databases (incidentally I can only find out the names of individual db's dynamically as they change day to day). Will connection pooling take care of this for me, are am I looking at this from the wrong perspective? I have no access to the configuration of the mssql server.   My Asp.net application uses 25-30% of the CPU on a test server which has 600 MB Ram on it. I can see the asp_wb process taking that much percentage of CPU. This is when I am testing using one user. How many users can the server afford then without falling over? Is there a relationship between the CPU Usage and number of user aka if there are 2 users my application will sky rocket to 60% of memory usage? Or does/Should/How does the server handle this?

• Is there a cap on the number of modules WinDbg can see?

  Does anyone know if there is a cap on the number of DLLs WinDbg can see ? I believe Visual Studio was once capped at 500 but I can't find a source for this claim outside of some second hand accounts at work. I'm trying to debug a hairy scenario and WinDbg's stack trace is incomplete. According to Process Explorer, the module I'm interested in is loaded but it doesn't show up in the output of 'lm' in WinDbg. Suspiciously, said output is exactly 500 modules long, even though I know there are many more than that loaded, leading me to believe WinDbg isn't seeing DLLs beyond the first 500. Can anyone confirm ? Or suggest some other reason why a loaded module might not show up in 'lm' ?

  Using WCF3.5SP1, VS2008. Building a WCF service that exposes about 10 service methods. We have defined about 40 [DataContract] types that are used by the service. We now experience that adding an additional [DataContract] type to the project (in the same namespace as the other existing types) does not get properly exposed. The new type is not in the XSD schemas generated with the WSDL. We have gone so far as to copy and rename an existing (and working) type, but it too is not present in the generated WSDL/XSD. We've tried this on two different developer machines, same problem. Is there a limit to the number of types that can exposed as [DataContract] for a Service? per Namespace?

• Fast, Vectorizable method of taking floating point number modulus of special primes?

  Is there a fast method for taking the modulus of a floating point number? With integers, there are tricks for Mersenne primes, so that its possible to calculate y = x MOD 2^31 without needing division. Can any similar tricks be applied for floating point numbers? Preferably, in a way that can be converted into vector/SIMD operations, or moved into GPGPU code. The primes I'm interested in would be 2^7 and 2^31, although if there are more efficient ones for floating point numbers, those would be welcome.
