  • In java web application, where should i store users photos?

    Hello, this questions may be stupid, but i dont really see how to resolve it : lest say that in my application, i have a user. This user edit his profile, and need to edit his avatar. Where should i store the avatar file? first of all i was saving all the files in src\main\webapp\resources , but each time i redeploy that folder empties. so i dedide to place in an other location : c:\wwwdir\resources, but i can't link local resources from remote pages, so i was not able to display any avatar . any idea? advise? link?

  • PASS Summit – looking back on my first time

      So I was lucky enough to get my first experience of PASS Summit this year and took some time beforehand to read some blogs and reference material to get an idea on what to do and how to get the best out of my visit. Having been to other conferences – technical and non-technical – I had a reasonable idea on the routine and what to expect in general. Here is a list of a few things that I have learned/remembered as the week has gone by. Wear comfortable shoes. This actually needs to be broadened to Take several pairs of comfortable shoes. You will be spending many many hours, for several days one after another. Having comfortable feet that can literally support you for the duration will make the week in general a whole lot better. Not only at the conference but getting to and from you could well be walking. In the evenings you will be walking around town and standing talking in various bars and clubs. Looking back, on some days I was on my feet for over 20 hours. Make friends. This is a given for the long term benefits it brings but there is also an immediate reward in being at a conference with a friend or two. Some events are bigger and more popular than others and some have the type of session that every single attendee will want to be in. This is great for those that get in but if you are in the bathroom or queuing for coffee and you miss out it sucks. Having a friend that can get in to a room and reserve you a seat is a great advantage to make sure you get the content that you want to see and still have the coffee that you need. Don’t go to every session you want to see This might sound counter intuitive and it relies on the sessions being recorded in some way to guarantee you don’t totally miss out. Both PASS Summit and SQL Bits sessions are recorded (summit is audio, SQLBits is video) and this means that if you get into a good conversation with someone over a coffee you don’t have to break it up to go to a session. Obviously there is a trade-off here and you need to decide on the tipping point for yourself but a conversation at a place like this could make a big difference to the next contract or employer you have or it might simply be great catching up with some friends you don’t see so often. Go to at least one session you don’t want to Again, this will seem to be contrary to normal logic but there is no reason why you shouldn’t learn about a part of SQL Server that isn’t part of your daily routine. Not only will you learn something new but you will also pick up on the feelings and attitudes of the people in the session. So, if you are a DBA, head off to a BI session and so on. You’ll hear BI speakers speaking to a BI audience and get to understand their point of view and reasoning for making the decisions they do. You will also appreciate the way that your decisions and instructions affect the way they have to work. This will help you a lot when you are on a project, working with multiple teams and make you all more productive. Socialise While you are at the conference venue, speak to people. Ask questions, be interested in whoever you are speaking to. You get chances to talk to new friends at breakfast, dinner and every break between sessions. The only people that might not talk to you would be speakers that are about to go and give a session, in most cases speakers like peace and quiet before going on stage. Other than that the people around you are just waiting for someone to talk to them so make the first move. There is a whole lot going on outside of the conference hours and you should make an effort to join in with some of this too. At karaoke evenings or just out for a quiet drink with a few of the people you meet at the conference. Either way, don’t be a recluse and hide in your room or be alone out in the town. Don’t talk to people Once again this sounds wrong but stay with me. I have spoken to a number of speakers since Summit 2013 finished and they have all mentioned the time it has taken them to move about the conference venue due to people stopping them for a chat or to ask a question. 45 minutes to walk from a session room to the speaker room in one case. Wow. While none of the speakers were upset about this sort of delay I think delegates should take the situation into account and possibly defer their question to an email or to a time when the person they want is clearly less in demand. Give them a chance to enjoy the conference in the same way that you are, they may actually want to go to a session or just have a rest after giving their session – talking for 75 minutes is hard work, taking an extra 45 minutes right after is unbelievable. I certainly hope that they get good feedback on their sessions and perhaps if you spoke to a speaker outside a session you can give them a mention in the ‘any other comments’ part of the feedback, just to convey your gratitude for them giving up their time and expertise for free. Say thank you I just mentioned giving the speakers a clear, visible ‘thank you’ in the feedback but there are plenty of people that help make any conference the success it is that would really appreciate hearing that their efforts are valued. People on the registration desk, volunteers giving schedule guidance and directions, people on the community zone are all volunteers giving their time to help you have the best experience possible. Send an email to PASS and convey your thoughts about the work that was done. Maybe you want to be a volunteer next time so you could enquire how you get into that position at the same time. This isn’t an exclusive list and you may agree or disagree with the points I have made, please add anything you think is good advice in the comments. I’d like to finish by saying a huge thank you to all the people involved in planning, facilitating and executing the PASS Summit 2013, it was an excellent event and I know many others think it was a totally worthwhile event to attend.

    Hi, I have situation in with I stucked and don't know way out. The problem is in my bigger model, but I have made small example which shows the same problem. I have 4 tables. I called them SuperParent, NamedParent, TypedParent and ParentType. NamedParent and TypedParent derives from superParent. TypedParent has one to many association with ParentType. I describe mapping for entities using queryView.   • How to properly add .NET assemblies to Powershell session?

    I have a .NET assembly (a dll) which is an API to backup software we use here. It contains some properties and methods I would like to take advantage of in my Powershell script(s). However, I am running into a lot of issues with first loading the assembly, then using any of the types once the assembly is loaded. The complete file path is: C:\rnd\CloudBerry.Backup.API.dll In Powershell I use: $dllpath = "C:\rnd\CloudBerry.Backup.API.dll" Add-Type -Path $dllpath I get the error below: Add-Type : Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. At line:1 char:9 + Add-Type <<<< -Path $dllpath + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Add-Type], ReflectionTypeLoadException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.AddTypeComma ndAdd-Type : Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. Using the same cmdlet on another .NET assembly, DotNetZip, which has examples of using the same functionality on the site also does not work for me. I eventually find that I am seemingly able to load the assembly using reflection: [System.Reflection.Assembly]::LoadFrom($dllpath) Although I don't understand the difference between the methods Load, LoadFrom, or LoadFile that last method seems to work. However, I still seem to be unable to create instances or use objects. Each time I try, I get errors that describe that Powershell is unable to find any of the public types.   • best practice? Consumer data in MySQL on Amazon EBS (Elastic block store)

    This is a consumer app, so I will care about storage costs - I don't want to have 5x copies of data lying about. The app shards very well, so I can use MySQL and not have scaling issues. Amazon EBS has a nice baseline+snapshot backup capability that uses S3. This should have a light footprint (in terms of storage cost). BUT: the magnolia.com story scares the crap out of me: basically flawless block-level backup of a corrupt DB or filesystem. Is there anything that is nearly as storage efficient as EBS at the MySQL level?

  • Any way to view dynamic java content ex-post? Browser session still open

    I feel like a grandpa from 1996 asking this, but is it at all possible to view a representation of a particular screen that was rendered as part of a java-based online checkout process I executed a couple days ago? I haven't cleared my browser cache or temp files or anything, and I don't think I've restarted the comp or even the browser since. I'm using mac OS X 10.6.8, and the page(s) were viewed with Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 in standard mode (not incognito). Specifically the page in question was part of Verizon Wireless's 'iconic' contract/checkout process, which leads the user through several pages to make selections on various criteria and seems to be based on java. Of course, clicking the link to the page in History right now requires a new sign-in and just returns the user to the initial step for doing the process again; it does not pull up a representation of the page as it was seen several days ago. This I understand. Instead using Chrome's integrated cache viewer by typing about:cache in the address bar, I can search and find links that appear to be relevant, when I click on the link I just get a http header and a bunch of hexadecimal gobbledygook. I've tried to use the URL at the top of the cache and URLs in the http headers, but they take me to current versions of those pages and not the versions I saw during the checkout process. I tried this with a few of them but stopped because I noticed that it updated the date in the http header to the present moment and I don't want to take chances overwriting the cache files since I don't know what I'm doing. (It's clear I can't achieve what I'm looking for by visiting current versions of these pages on the web…I should actually probably disable my network adapter while testing this out). The cache folder seems promising, but I don't know what to make of all that hexadecimal mess - if it contains what I'm looking for and if so, how to view it. Finally, the third thing I've come across is the Google Chrome cache folder on my local machine, at ~/Library/Caches/Google/Chrome/ then there are 'Default' and 'Media Cache' folders within. There are ~4,000 files in the former averaging ~100kb each, and 100 files in the latter averaging ~900kb each. The filenames all start "f_00xxxx" except for files titled data_0 through data_4 in each folder. I'm not sure how to observe the contents of these files and don't really want to start opening them up and potentially overwriting existing cached pages, as I notice there are already some holes in the arrangement of the files which I have never deleted manually. Hopefully this is an easy question to answer for someone who knows this stuff, admittedly web stuff is my weak point. As such, I've spent the past five hours searching around and trying to provide all the information I can. I'm probably asking for a miracle - like can those cached pages full of hexadecimal data be used to recreate the representation of the information that was on screen during the process? Or could screenshots of the previously viewed webpages be lurking in the /Caches folder? I have doubt because the content wasn't viewed at a permanent link, rather it seems like the on-screen information was served by Verizon's db, and probably securely so. I'm just not sure if Chrome saves the visual rendering of the page contents somewhere, even just temporarily. Alternatively I would be happy just to get the raw data that was on the page, even if not a visual representation…I just need to be able to demonstrate the phone line that was referenced on this page: https://preorder.verizonwireless.com/iconic/iconic/secured/screens/IconicFeatures.do .   • Need to store and backup HD vid files. But need to access them alot.

What I need is a place to keep my HD vid files so when I edit, I don't get a long load time in the editing software. But I also need to keep a back-up of all my other important files which I haven't been doing. Should I buy an additional internal drive JUST for vid files and buy an external for backup of all my files? What are my best options?

  • Will open files limit in Centos affect HTTP connections? Does the limit apply to a single session or all sessions?

    When I do a ulimit -n I got 256, I assume it means I can open 256 files at the sametime. Does it means I can open 256 files with one single session? or all sessions? For example, I logined to my server with username "abc" (via putty/ssh), and open 200 files, with the session still running, I logined to the same server again with the same username "abc" (via putty/ssh), I can open only another 56 files? or I can open another 256 files? Lastly, does this limit also restrict number of http connections? e.g. with the above example, I have opened 200 files, and then I use "wget" or "curl" to make http connections. Thanks

    I'm writing procedures for configuring VirtualBox support for 64-bit SMP guests, which requires hardware virtualization suppot (VTx/Intel, AMD-V/AMD). I have successfully configured this myself, however I'd like the procedure to be clear. sed -ne '/^flags/s/^.*: //p' /proc/cpuinfo | egrep -q '(vmx|svm)' && echo Has hardware virt || echo No HW virt ... shows if the CPU is capable. I remember being told by an old system administrator back in the early nineties about people asking about good FTPs for porn, and that they would as a joke always tell them to connect to 127.0.0.1. They would come back saying that there was a lot of porn at that address, but that oddly enough it seemed like they already had it all. Point being, it seems like it's been around for quite a while. Anyway. Considering that a considerable portion of the internet is devoted to porn these days, it would be interesting to know if someone has any kind of idea as to when and where the phenomena first arose?   • What is the best software to capture full-screen 3h programming session in Windows?

    Hi, I'm planning a laboratorial experiment to assess behavior of groups when programming using some tools under study. For that, I'll need to capture their entire screen to disk. Mostly, what will be displayed is code, so I'm not to worried with image quality. However, it's paramount that the team is not able to stop the recording by accident, and the tool should be rebust enough to hold at least 3h of video. If possible, it would be nice for researchers in other rooms to "watch" the video as it is recording. Actually, this last requirement reminded me that I could use a VNC recording software, and install a VNC client in each laboratory computer. Anyway, what is your experience with this?   • Can I see the SMTP session log when Mail.app connects to an SMPT server?

    Problem: I've set up a mail server using SASL authentication, and have given Mail.app (on Mac Os 10.4) the login information it needs to connect. I wrote a test message for it to deliver to my server: the Activity window shows that it tries to deliver the message, but then it simply stops, with no indication of error, except that the test message is left in the Outbox. How can I find out what went wrong? Is there some log file I don't know about?

    I am trying to understand the technical (and business) logic behind taking such an approach. Certainly SE isn't short of server or bandwidth resources. I don't think imgur is a CDN, so that can't be the reason. On the one hand one is giving up local control (meaning your files, your hardware) of the content. On the other, you don't have to use your own bandwidth, storage and resources. Then again, you depend on someone else for the reliability and up-time of your service.

  • How can I set a Windows user environment variable that takes effect for the current session?

    I am trying to set a Windows user environment variable and then launch an application via either batch file or a script. However, the environment variable is not set to the appropriate value until after the user logs off and logs back on. (I think a more accurate description would be that the new value is not available to the app until after the next logon.) Is there any way to set a variable in the user's environment so that it's immediately available? I'm doing this because this program's functionality can be controlled by environment variables, and users will need different functionality at different times.   • Blu-ray BD-R: Would you physically store it in a CaseLogic Wallet pocket?

    I keep several backup copies of my material and files. For my DVDs, one set of copies is kept in a CaseLogic wallet folder pack, so that I can easily move this around when visiting friends, family or for business. This is highly convenient. The other sets are kept in their jewel cases in hard plastic see thru storage boxes. Although CaseLogic wallet material is designed to be abrasion free, their caveat is that external dust will be the cause of any blemishes. If hard dust gets in these pockets, which is inevitable, this will occasionally cause light hair like scratches on the disc surface as the discs are removed and returned for access to their contents. This is of no consequence as the laser and error correction can more than cope with this. I'm aware that the blu-ray spec requires anti-scratch in disc surfaces but was wondering that, given the smaller pits, would dust and light scratches from wallet storage cause more problems with blu-rays than they would with DVDs? I'm using Blu-ray BD-R and BD-R DL write once media.

    I have an exchange sever 2003 installed and working. I have a new exchange 2007 server on another network. The two networks are completely separate with no connection. How can I take the 2003 mailboxes and put them on the new 2007 system? The move mailbox normal option on 2007 will not be able to see the old 2003 exchange server.     I will soon be running an internet-based public service which will physically be hosted in the UK on a virtual server. The virtual server is provided by the ISP. I was wondering if there is/are any legal requirement(s) to keep access logs, and if yes - for how long? There is a Wikipedia article that touches this subject but I'm afraid my brain just can't grasp the legislative gibberish. I believe there's EU law and there's UK law; and I do need to comply to both, right? Can somebody explain this in pure layman's terms?

    Hey! I connect remotely to my Ubuntu server from Vista machine. Now I need to run a GUI application on the server (Wireshark). So I decided to use FreeNX server/client to view Ubuntu GUI on Vista I have successfully installed FreeNX on Ubuntu and NX Client on Vista.
