• How to handle expired items?

  My site allows users to post things on the site with an expiry date. Once the item has expired, it will no longer be displayed in the listings. Posts can also be closed, canceled, or completed. I think it would be be nicest just to be able to check for one attribute or status ("is active") rather than having to check for [is not expired, is not completed, is not closed, is not canceled]. Handling the rest of those is easy because I can just have one "status" field which is essentially an enum, but AFAIK, it's impossible to set the status to "expired" as soon as that time occurs. How do people typically handle this?

• Can events fired from an iframe be handled by elements in its parent?

  Suppose I have a page located at www.example.com/foo, and it contains an iframe with src="http://www.example.com/bar". I want to be able to fire an event from /bar and have it be heard by /foo. Using the Prototype library, I've tried doing the following without success: Element.fire(parent, 'ns:frob'); When I do this, in ff 3.5, I get the following error: Node cannot be used in a document other than the one in which it was created" code: "4 Line 0 Not sure if that's related to my problem. Is there some security mechanism that's preventing scripts in /bar from kicking off events in /foo?

• Is there a simple script to convert C++ enum to string?

  Suppose we have some named enums: enum MyEnum { FOO, BAR = 0x50 }; What I googled for is a script (any language) that scans all the headers in my project and generates a header with one function per enum. char* enum_to_string(MyEnum t); And a implementation with something like this: char* enum_to_string(MyEnum t){ switch(t){ case FOO: return "FOO"; case BAR: return "BAR"; default: return "INVALID ENUM"; } } The gotcha is really with typedefed enums, and unnamed C style enums. Does anybody know something for this? EDIT: The solution should not modify my source, except for the generated functions. The enums are in an API, so using the solutions proposed until now is just not an option.

• Using the windows api and C++, how could I load an exe from the hard drive and run it in its own thread?

  For the sake of learning I'm trying to do what the OS does when launching a program ie. parsing a PE file and giving it a thread of execution. If I have two exe's one called foo.exe and the other bar.exe, how could I have foo.exe load the contents of bar.exe into memory then have it execute from there in its own thread? I know how to get it into memory using MapViewOfFile or by simple loading the contents on the hard drive into a buffer. I'm assuming simply copying the contents of bar.exe on disk into its own suspended thread and running it wouldn't work. I am semi-familiar with PE file internals. All help is very much appreciated, of course :)

  If I have Map setup like: map.put("foo", "123"); map.put("bar", "456"); map.put("baz", "789"); then I want to do something like: for (String key : map.keySet().toArray(new String[0])) { // marshall out to .xml a tag with the name key and the // value map.get(key) } So what it will marshal out is something like: <map> <foo>123</foo> <bar>456</bar> <baz>789</baz> </map> Can I do this with some fancy JAXB annotations or is there something else that lends it self to dynamic element names?   I am developing a Python module with several source files, each with its own test class derived from unittest right in the source. Consider the directory structure: dirFoo\ test.py dirBar\ __init__.py Foo.py Bar.py To test either Foo.py or Bar.py, I would add this at the end of the Foo.py and Bar.py source files: if __name__ == "__main__": unittest.main() And run Python on either source, i.e. $ python Foo.py ........... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ran 11 tests in 2.314s OK Ideally, I would have "test.py" automagically search dirBar for any unittest derived classes and make one call to "unittest.main()". What's the best way to do this in practice? I tried using Python to call execfile for every *.py file in dirBar, which runs once for the first .py file found & exits the calling test.py, plus then I have to duplicate my code by adding unittest.main() in every source file--which violates DRY principles.

• Best way to update UI from other classes?

  I've got several nested classes, with the following structure: BackupLocation contains list of BackupClients BackupClients contains a list of BackupVersions BackupVersions contains a list of BackupFiles In my UI - Im populating a combo box with BackupLocations - and have several listboxes for the clients, versions, and files. When processing the BackupLocations - I can update my status bar easily because thats the top level class that the UI creates. But how can I update the status bar and progress bar on each file being processed? Since the BackupFiles are 3 levels deep, I cant see any way to update the UI. The actual processing of the files are within the BackupVersion class - which loads its files. I think it probably has something to do with events and delegates - but am unsure exactly how to proceed with this, any help would be appreciated.

I have this scenario -- I am to read from a text file a string that may or may not contain an environment variable that may or may not be defined. For example: <foo.bar> This error code was found: $(error_code) I have the following code: statement=$(sed -n $1'p' $messagefile) echo $echo_flag $statement $1 = line number supplied to this particular function/script. $messagefile = filename of log file. $echo_flag = "-e" in Linux, otherwise, empty. $(error_code) = 42. Instead of getting this when running: <foo.bar> This error code was found: 42 I still get this: <foo.bar> This error code was found: $(error_code) How exactly do I tell the shell script that the value of statement should be evaluated further beyond what sed have done?

Now I am working on a new project and I want to subclass Bar. Let's call it NewBar. What is a simple and flexible way to get Foo.LoadData to return a list of NewBar?   I'm wondering if I can use a static variable for optimization: public function Bar() { static $i = moderatelyExpensiveFunctionCall(); if ($i) { return something(); } else { return somethingElse(); } } I know that once $i is initialized, it won't be changed by by that line of code on successive calls to Bar(). I assume this means that moderatelyExpensiveFunctionCall() won't be evaluated every time I call, but I'd like to know for certain. Once PHP sees a static variable that has been initialized, does it skip over that line of code? In other words, is this going to optimize my execution time if I make a lot of calls to Bar(), or am I wasting my time?

  My source files tree is like this: /src /pkg /foo foo.go foo_test.go Inside foo.go: package foo func bar(n int) { ... } inside foo_test.go: package foo func testBar(t *testing.T) { bar(10) ... } My questions are: Does package name relates to directory name, source file name? If there is only one source file for a package, need I put it in a directory? Should I put foo.go and foo_test.go in the same package? In the foo_test.go, as it's in the same package as foo.go, I didn't import foo. But when I compile foo_test.go with 6g, it says bar() is undefined. What should I do?

  In C++ there is a concept of a "friend", which has access to a class's private variables and functions. So if you have: class Foo { friend class Bar; private: int x; } then any instance of the class Bar can modify any Foo instance's x member, despite it being private, because Bar is a friend of Foo. Now I have a situation in Java where this functionality would come in handy. There are three classes: Database, Modifier, Viewer. The Database is just a collection of variables (like a struct). Modifier should be "friends" with Database; that is, it should be able to read and write its variables directly. But Viewer should only be able to read Database's variables. How is this best implemented? Is there a good way to enforce Viewer's read-only access of Database?

If i have 10 bars in collection, i'll call db 10 times. bars.Select(x=x.Foo.Title) At the moment this (using NHibernate Linq and i don't want to drop it) retrieves Bar collection. var q = from b in Session.Linq<Bar>() where ... select b; I read what Ayende says about this. Another related question. A bit of documentation. And another related blog post. Maybe this can help? What about this? Maybe MultiQuery is what i need? :/ But i still can't 'compile' this in proper solution. How to avoid select n+1?

  Let's assume I have an array of object properties I'd like to access: $properties = array('foo', 'bar'); I'd like to loop through the object and access these properties dynamically (specifically, I'm trying to dynamically handle missing JSON elements based on an array of expected elements): foreach ($data as $item) { foreach ($properties as $property) { if (empty($item->{$property})) { // Do something } } } Each $item in $data should have the properties 'foo' and 'bar'. If empty(), I'll handle them. I'm trying to get the loop (in line 3) to access $item-{'foo'} and $item-{'bar'}, but it's not working. Any idea why? Thanks!

  Given a path to a REST style URL: http://site.com/rest/customer/foo/robot/bar/1 When you GET it, it returns a PDF to the foo-customer containing page 1 of the bar-URL. While foo is the name of the customer bar is an URL. The URL usually contains slashes and might look something like this: http://anothersite.com/interestingarticle.html As REST URL's separate arguments by slashes I can't just put it into the REST URL above. Which encoding should I use? I can't use Base 64 as it utilizes the slash as well. As a technical note I will encode the URL in a .NET-application and decode it in PHP.
