• Remote Desktop Services In A Virtual VMWare Environment

  I have a quick question regarding Microsoft Remote Desktop Services in a virtualized environment using VMWare. This environment will actually be hosted in a large data center with in a cloud that is offered. This particular data center has the ability to establish high speed point to point connections with customers via metro-ethernet who are hosted in the cloud. The result is that customers can actually host their corporate domain in the data center's cloud. Put the merits of such a configuration aside for the time being. Believe me when I say that the cloud is stable and had enough hardware behind it to rival a dedicated cabinet. My question has to do with RDS in a virtual environment, which would amount to virtual desktops hosted on a virtual server. I've read that this works without issue using Hyper-V and VMWare. But before I take the plunge I wanted to get some feedback from the community.

• NIS server setting problem in ubuntu

  Hi, I set NFS for server-client that works properly. Now I am trying to set NIS server-client on same PC's. I am following the instruction from "SettingUpNISHowTo" from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNISHowTo link. But in step-10, "sudo /etc/init.d/nis restart".......it show error fail. If I try to use "ypcat passwd" to check......it shows error YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Can't bind to server which serves this domain Can anyone able to help me to get rid out from this problem? Is all the step in the document is proper to configure the NIS server? • How do I stop CRM from asking for admin credentials when printing report

  Problem: When printing a report in CRM, I am asked by the UAC for admin credentials. There is a long URL: https://(crm_hostname)/reserved.ReportViewerWebcontrol.axd?ReportSession=(ID)ControlID=(ID)Culture=1333&UICulture=1033&ReportStack=1&OpType=PrintCab Info: There are three users that have the issue laied out here. They are not admins of any kind. It looks like it is asking for permission to allow SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 to run. When I put my credentials in, it just brings up the Print dialog box (this is fine, just stop asking for credentials). I know this might sound silly but I downloaded and installed "SQL Server Reporting Services 2008" hopping my credentials would give permission right from the beginning. Giving the users local admin, I was told is not an option. Note: I did post this on community (dot) dynamics (dot) com but, they are not a very active website. Thanks for any help even if it just points me in the right direction!

  Do you place any limits on the size of Apache log files - access.log and error.log? Specifically, can you give: Reasons to limit log file sizes Disk space Any other? Reasons NOT to limit log file sizes Research into performance issues or security breaches Any other? Methods of doing so Cron job that periodically deletes the file, or the first N lines? Any other? Anything you might salvage before deleting For example, grep out how many times a file was downloaded before deleting the access logs I'd like get the thoughts of experienced sysadmins before I do anything. • Disable "Tip for your Google Chrome"

  Avast has added something to their software which Google Chrome tip whenever it informs you of an database update: It seems to only be the same message at the moment, as I am only getting the Search with Google right from the address bar to save time. Try Now: How can I stop it from giving me this tip and only show me the virus definitions have been updated message? Your virus definitions have been automatically updated I have tried looking under Settings > Popups, however I cannot find an option to disable it there. I tried these settings that is in my answer In the avast! settings interface there is an option to turn off recommendations and tips: Settings Community Edit: It doesn't seem to work anymore, it worked for the next 2 database updates and now it is showing the tip again.

  I tried to switch from Java 5 to Java 6 using the "update-java-alternatives" command like explained on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java But afterwards I get the following error when I tried to execute java: root@webserver:~# java Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I also tried to reinstall the java binaries using "apt-get" but I didn't succeed reinstalling it. I would like to post the "apt-get" errors, but unfortunately I don't know how to print out the error messages in English and not in German. My system is a Ubuntu 8.04 ROOT server.

• AMD Processors and the Windows Phone 8 Emulator

  I would madly appreciate it if anyone in this community would help me with my question. The background is that I want to develop Windows Phone 8 applications but both of my current computer processors do not have Hardware Virtualization & Second Level Address Translation that are needed to run the Emulator. I have my eyes on an AMD computer g7-2243us (I like it because it has 1600x900 screen res). I looked up this Link that shows that this computer's AMD processor (Next Gen AMD Quad-Core A8-4500M Accelerated 1.9GHz up to 2.8GHz 4MB L2 Cache Processor) supports AMD-V Hardware Virtualization. So, will this computer be able to run the emulator? Thank you so much for your answers. I'm pretty sure it will run the emulator, but I just want to make sure before spending $400. • CPU Affinity on ARM processors

  I am using some RaspberryPI boards for a data acquisition system. They are nice boards, with plenty of community support around them, but they are really slow. I am thinking of gradually replacing them with ODROID multicore boards, with the Samsung Exynos processors. I have some experience using taskset to set CPU affinity on my servers because I am always running Node.js applications that are by definition single threaded. Now, is it possible to do this on an ARM board? I do not see why it would not in theory, but I have doubts over how well it is going to work. Does anyone have experience with this kind of hack? Also, I would appreciate any comments about ARM CPUs and how they differ from x86.

When running 2nd pass , the CPU seems to be at 98% usage, but first pass run totally ignores "-threads" option. Using libx264 . Here is my preset: flags=+loop+mv4 cmp=256 partitions=+parti4x4+parti8x8+partp4x4+partp8x8+partb8x8 me_method=hex subq=7 trellis=1 refs=5 bf=3 flags2=+bpyramid+wpred+mixed_refs+dct8x8 coder=1 me_range=16 g=250 keyint_min=25 sc_threshold=40 i_qfactor=0.71 qmin=10 qmax=51 qdiff=4 Is there any reason why the 1st pass is not utilizing my CPUs ? • Problem reinstalling GRUB

  I have a PC that dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows Vista. I recently reinstalled Windows Vista after some problems and now the bootloader's gone. I've been trying to follow this Ubuntu community guide but it's not working. I have Grub Legacy according to the first part (I installed Ubuntu 9.04 originally then upgraded). From the 9.04 LiveCD, I ran this: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/disk /dev/sda5 sda5 is the Ubuntu partition. I get this output: grub-probe: error: Cannot open `/boot/grub/device.map` [: 494: =: unexpected operator Installing GRUB to /dev/sda5 as (hd0,4)... Installation finished.No errors reported. This is the contents...(etc) (hd0) /dev/sda In the bit below, when I run setup (hd0) I get an error, "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition" Little help?

  I am developing a scheduler for running VMs on KVM. The scheduling has over-commitment of resources like memory and CPU. For this, I need a CLI-based monitoring tool that keeps me giving information about the resource usage of each VM, because it might be the case that due to over-provisioning of resources, VMs on a particular host are running very slowly depending on the benchmarks/programs each VM is running, and then I need to migrate a VM to another host and so on. I looked into libvirt-based tools like collects, MUNIN, Nagios-vert, etc.( http://libvirt.org/apps.html#monitoring ) I also looked into Ubuntu utility perf-kvm ( http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/maverick/man1/perf-kvm.1.html ) I want to ask which CLI-based would be recommended by the community so that I can make a automated scheduler that takes care of the above situation.

• How to Restart Windows Update Service in Windows 7?

  I'm running into an issue with Windows Update on Windows 7 Professional. I am totally up to date in Windows Updates as of last week, but discovered this issue [today] during my Sunday morning PC maintenance ritual. In CONTROL PANEL - SYSTEM & SECURITY - Windows Update, when I select "Check for Updates", I get a pop-up stating: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I've re-started several times, checked that the service hadn't been disabled at start up, and I've googled extensively on the topic - but have come up with nothing. I know there must be some way to start the service from the cmd line, and I would like to know how to get the service to start at boot. Please let me know if I have left any details out that may aid in formulating a response. Any of the community's excellent insights would be greatly appreciated!

• Is there a clean way to tell Windows to release a volume?

  Hey guys, I'm trying, under Windows 7, to run a virtual machine with VMWare Player from an OS installed on a physical partition. However, when I boot the virtual machine, VMWare Player says that it couldn't access the physical drive and has to abort there. This seems to be a generally acknowledged problem in the VMWare community, as Windows Vista introduced a compelling new security feature that makes it impossible to write to a raw drive without obtaining exclusive access to it. I have googled the issue and found a few workarounds. However, the clean ones seem to only work on whole physical disks, and not on partitions. So I would be left with the dirty solution. In short, it meddles with the MBR to erase any trace of the partitions to use, makes Windows forget about them, then restores the MBR so we can launch the VM. Is there a way to let VMWare acquire exclusive access to the partition without requiring me to nuke it away?

• Is there a free tool/package that can monitor web traffic and display URLS accessed? [closed]

  I couldn't find a similar question but then maybe I am searching for the wrong terms. A few years ago I used a router like device, I'm pretty sure it was a SonicWall, that did this on a clients site. Basically all traffic would be routed through this device and it allowed the manager/administrator to inspect web usage of the workers, determine how often certain resources were accessed and block them if necessary (much like content filter). It showed reports based on domain name reached etc. Facebbok.com, Bebo.com and so on. It also displayed the usual IP traffic information etc. it was a UTM also. I have tried Endian firewall, with it's NTOP install, but I don't think that will show URLs browsed. Maybe I just haven't found it in NTOP yet? I need this to troubleshoot connection and traffic issue at my home, with about twenty devices/users so didn't want to buy a dedicated solution and have spare hardware to use a community product.

  I need to remotely install Ubuntu Server 10.04 (x86) on a server currently running RHEL 3.4 (x86). I'll have to be very careful because no one can press the restart button for me if anything goes wrong. Have you ever remotely installed Linux? Which way would you recommend? I was lucky enough that everything went smoothly :)

  These days server naming is a bit of a lost art. Most large organizations don't allow for fanciful names and name their servers with jumbles of digits and letters. In the olden days just about every system administrator came up with a unique naming scheme, well, sometimes unique - many just settled for Star Trek characters. To this day my favorite server name is Qantas - a Unix server that Joel Spolsky has or used to have. Why Qantas? You'd have to ask Rainman. • How to connect a remote IP Phone to our VOIP Network?

  We have an IP phone system in our office, and about 8 VoIP phones running on the system. We have a remote worker, who is literally states away. We'd like to connect his phone to our VoIP network, so that he has a business phone and an extension to which we could transfer calls. I was thinking, although I don't know for sure, that a pair of Cisco routers could be used in some way to make this work. I imagine a VPN solution, where I have one router connected to the phone network and the other router connected to the remote phone. Then have a site-to-site VPN set up so that the remote router... And that's where I'm stuck. I know the remote router will need to use the DHCP server of the phone system. I've never set up something like this, so I am seeking the help of the community here. What is the best way to get this remote VoIP phone RELIABLY connected to our internal VoIP network?

Heard that nginx performance is quite impressive, but Apache has more docs, community(read:expert) to get help Now what I want to know, how both web servers compare in term of performance, easiness of config, level of customization,etc. AS REVERSE PROXY server in a vps environment?? • There is a commercial tool like Xen + Remus?

  Hello, I have a project where we need a completely redundant system like the one offered by Remus with a Xen virtualization system. I wondered if there is a system like this one built by VMWare or some other company because the project is a very critical one and we do not want to have to wait that a bug is fixed by "the community" and money is not a problem. What Remus does is to build a completely redundant system where you can shutdown one machine and the other continues the work where the other left it maintaining the network connections opened, etc Any hint?   I am trying to install Ruby on Rails. and i have followed the following link for the install https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-ruby-on-rails-on-ubuntu-12-04-lts-precise-pangolin-with-rvm. This link was helpful i was able to run it, and everything, however as soon has i restarted the computer i then go into my apps and run it again with rails s and this message occurs. The program 'rails' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install rails But work before, what should i do, do i need to set the path of somesort?? I am not that great in linux so bear with me. I am using linux ubuntu 12.04 desktop and my user is john Thanks in advance
