• Should we install the OS on an SSD or not when running virtual machines?

  I have a new Dell Mobile Precision M6500 laptop with 8 GB RAM. it has two hard drives - 500 GB @7200 RPM and a 128 GB SSD. The main purpose of these laptop is software development in virtual machines. The plan is to install the base OS (Windows 7) and all the programs in the 500 GB drive, and let the SSD only contain the virtual machine images. It is my understanding that the we get most performance from the virtual machines if the images are on a separate hard drive than the base OS. Is this the way to go, or should I install the OS on the SSD as well? What are the pros and cons? The virtual machine images would be between 20 - 30 GB, and I might run 1 or 2 at a time.

• What's a good tool for collecting statistics on filesystem usage?

  We have a number of filesystems for our computational cluster, with a lot of users that store a lot of really large files. We'd like to monitor the filesystem and help optimize their usage of it, as well as plan for expansion. In order to this, we need some way to monitor how these filesystems are used. Essentially I'd like to know all sorts of statistics about the files: Age Frequency of access Last accessed times Types Sizes Ideally this information would be available in aggregate form for any directory so that we could monitor it based on project or user. Short of writing something up myself in Python, I haven't been able to find any tools capable of performing these duties. Any recommendations?

(I'm new to Linux, have to use at work so I'm planning to install it at home to learn more) I plan to use a partition to my Windows system files (C:), a partition for my personal files that already exists (D:) and a new partition for Linux. What I want is to have a partition for my personal files that works across these systems - so, if I start with Windows or Linux, there's the same "Videos", "Pictures", "Projects" folders. Is it possible? Is there a hd filesystem capable of having writes from both systems without too much risk of corrupting or something?

• Exchange 07 to 07 mailbox migration using local continuous replication

  I have an existing Exchange Server ex0 and a fresh Exchange Server ex1, both 2007SP3. The servers are in different sites so users cannot access mailboxes on ex1 as from my understanding, a standalone CAS is required for this. I am thinking of doing the following: Enable local continous replication of the storage group on ex0 to a mapped drive that points to the corresponding storage group folder on ex1 At some point when the replication is done (small number of users and volume of mail), say on a late night on the weekend, disable CAS on ex0 (or otherwise redirect requests on the server-side from ex0 to ex1) AND change the public DNS name of the CAS so that it points to ex1. Will my plan work? If not, please explain what I can do to fix it.

  I am using automongobackup to, well, automate the backups of mongodb. output from the script (to STDERR) has the following exceptions (but the backup completes, and the dump files are created) ###### WARNING ###### STDERR written to during mongodump execution. Why would automongobackup report connection errors, even tho it does create the dump files, yet a straight call to mongodump does not? • How can I make a non-destructive copy of a (NTFS) partition?

  I want to recover some deleted files from a healthy NTFS partition on an undamaged hard-disk. In order to leave the partition undisturbed, i plan to use dd to clone the partition to a raw image file & then attempt recovery from that mounted clone. Will dd if=/dev/sd<xn> of=/path/to/output.img perform a non-destructive copy ? Is attempting a restore from a clone using dd the best approach? [edit, wrt Deltiks answer, i need to be a bit clearer about what i'm asking] eg: are there some s/w that can do something more with the original sectors ? eg: if it was a damaged hard-disk i am aware that any kind of read is potentially destructive. but assuming my disk head is not going to suddenly spaz out etc, am i reducing my chances of a successful recovery (at any cost) by using an apparently non-destructive single read of my undamaged hard-disk. (btw: i am planning on using ntfsundelete & testdisk for recovery)

• Windows 8 Metro/Modern Start Screen with Multiple Monitors -- Keep it always maximized?

  Before installing Win 8 today, my plan was to keep the Metro UI up on my smaller, laptop monitor and have the classic UI running on my two larger monitors. However, in reality, as soon as I click on something in one of the classic UI monitors, the Metro UI minimizes (thus exposing the classic UI in its place). Is there any way to keep the Metro UI from minimizing when I do something in another monitor? Oddly enough, if there is an app running/suspended in the Metro Window, then the Metro UI is not minimized. If the Start screen is currently viewed, clicking in a classic window/monitor switches the Metro UI from the start screen to the last run app. Very peculiar..

  Just a quick question, I couldn't find this out by looking around and have not had the time to run a test myself: Is it possible to create image hierarchies in MDT? Take this example where we have three images. - Image 1: Base OS - Image 2: Company Wide Applications (built off Image 1) - Image 3: Specific Role Applications (built off Image 2) Now just say we change the version of an application in Image 2. The next time we build Image 3, will this take the new version of the application since it's basing its image off Image 2? Also, If we add a program to Image 1, leave Image 2 unchanged and re-build Image 3, would this include the new program? I'm trying to plan out a way of creating images such that if a change is required for an image that is on basically every machine (think, Image 1) then we only have to change it in one location. Has anyone actually done something like this and has any tips?

• Is it possible to live-boot VirtualBox from a USB flash drive?

  To clarify, I'm not asking if you can boot from USB from within VirtualBox. I would like to make a portable version of Windows 7 that I can run from a USB drive on any machine. I'm putting a distro of Linux on my laptop, but I manage a Windows domain at work so I'd like an easier management solution than trying to use Linux tools to interface with a Windows DC(as RDP to a DC is not always an option). The reason I'm inquiring about VirtualBox... I plan on carrying this portable installation with me and using it on multiple machines, so I would like to avoid driver conflicts (which I imagine would happen if I only installed Windows on a flash drive). Basically, I need a way to boot an installation of Windows 7 from USB that still allows me to install/remove/update programs as if it were installed on a standard hard drive, and not freak out over different hardware configurations. Please help, superusers!

  Hey guys, I have sql05 and my maintenance plan which backs up a database to an external storage SAN, has been failing every night. Here is my error: Executing the query "BACKUP DATABASE [master] TO DISK = N'\\192.168.x.x\vmbackup\server\dbbackup\master_backup_201004222300.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'master_backup_20100422230002', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 " failed with the following error: "Cannot open backup device '\\192.168.x.x\vmbackup\server\dbbackup\master_backup_201004222300.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly. I googled this error and tried adding permissions to the backup device for network service as recommended at experts exchange, no dice. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Dynamically changing one-node Cassandra cluster to two nodes

  So I have an application that will be very dormant most of the time but will need high-bursting a few days out of the month. Since we are deploying on EC2 I would like to keep only one Cassandra server up most of the time and then on burst days I want to bring one more server up (with more RAM and CPU than the first) to help serve the load. What is the best way to do this? Should I take a different approach? Some notes about what I plan to do: Bring the node up and repair it immediately After the burst time is over decommission the powerful node Use the always-on server as the seed node My main question is how to get the nodes to share all the data since I want a replication factor of 2 (so both nodes have all the data) but that won't work while there is only one server. Should I bring up 2 extra servers instead of just one?

  I plan to use git for hosting my projects on my server. I've read about cgit, git-daemon, and I more or less decided to use those tools. But general use is still kind of confusing for me. What do I need to set up on the server, to push my files onto it. And when the files on the server are newer as the files on my computer, how do I merge them? Also, I use, say, two computers where I develop. How do I merge from one computer to the other? Also, when two people are working on the same project, how do they merge their local repos from one another? As you probably can tell by now, I come from SVN, but I've worked with Mercurial and now I'd like to test git.

• How to share datastores between multiple exchange servers?

  I have an Exchange 2003 box that is seriously overstressed. I want to transfer its duties to a new and faster box. I don't cannot suffer downtime, so I have to do this stuff live. Here's what I plan to do: Install Exchange 2003 on the new server Set up the new server, so it will accept requests from users for their mailboxes I want to do as little manual set up as possible, because that 'll eat up my time and is too error prone Than I want to transfer my datastores one by one to the new server and have those users (once the datastore in the new server is up and running) to get their data from the new server (without them noticing) I don't have to transfer all the datastores, some of them need to stay on the old box (because I'm still waiting for extra HD space to arrive from the supplier) What steps do I need to follow to do this? The new box has never seen this domain before, the old exchange server is not the DC, we have a dedicated DC.

• Bootstrapped Ubuntu 12.04 EC2 instance. Where to find log?

  So I bootstrapped a shell script to install and run a bunch of tasks. Looks like the it ran for the most part, but I added one part and that was formatting an extra EBS volume. Pretty straightforward: mkfs.ext4 /dev/xvdf mkdir –m 000 /vol01 echo “/dev/xvdf /vol01 auto noatime 0 0” | sudo tee –a /etc/fstab sudo mount /vol01 I was able to install MongoDB, NGINX and Forever. I selected to use /dev/xdvf in the AWS console and see it. The 3rd line is not in fstab either. I've searched through various logs in /var/log/ but I don't really see much indicating the execution of the bootstrap. Logs that I see and looked through: auth.log boot.log dmesg dpkg.log syslog udev

The username begins with a letter and can consists of any alphanumeric character along with an underscore, hyphen, or period. So far, the redirection has worked perfectly when I ignore usage of the period character.   How to schedule a task X minutes after Windows Server 2003 starts? In "Scheduled Tasks" one can specify "When my computer starts" but I see no way to specify delay. What I am trying to achieve: there is a service (JIRA) that even though dependent on SQL Server service still doesn't wait long enough for SQL Server to become fully operational. So JIRA service fails to connect to the database and needs to be restarted manually after each server reboot. My plan is to add "SC stop" and "SC start" commands for JIRA service 3 minutes after server starts.

  I received a letter from Autodesk asking for a "License Assessment". I understand it as a software audit. They plan to do it remotely. The thing is, I'm a freelancer, I don't use any Software Asset Mangment software, and I just recently swap out my hard drive for a new one, and did a complete clean install, and then I received this request from Autodesk. There is almost nothing on my hard drive now. What do software auditors do when they experience this? The problem is that recently we were attacked with some odd malware: users are getting zip-file via mail, and when they open this zip file, they execute a binary keylogger malware, that is inside this zipped file. (One click is enough). We have some non-technical limitations and due this limitation we can't configure user's mail servers. But actually we have physical access to their laptops. As far as I know, there is possible to mount user's home directory without "x" (execution) permission in Linux and *BSD. So users can't run some binary file inside home directory. Is it possible to configure OS X so that user can't execute files inside /Users/?

• How can I get all my itunes files from multiple computers onto my new PC?

  Managing my itunes files (music,video,tv shows, iphone apps) is a really hard task and I have not had much luck yet. If I had a single PC for the rest of my life with the same hard drive, it would work great but infortunately it cannot be that simple. I just build a new PC as my old hard drive crashed with all my itunes purchased songs, video, etc. So is there anyway to get itunes to recognize that I own all them and let me re-download everything? As I see it so far, it knows what I own by my itunes account login (it knows if I purchased a file or not ever) but does not seem to let you just re-download everything to a new PC or new hard drive. I realize I should of had backups but I didn't. My backup plan is a work in process and it is getting much better but that doesnt help with my situation at the moment. So I am asking for any help, ideas of how to retrieve all my previous itunes purchases?

I was thinking about LVM, but as far as I remember, Windows 7 can't be installed on logical volume right?   Question As a general practice, is it a good idea to use multiple TLDs for the name servers? How should I choose between which TLD would be a good candidate for being the root server for my NS name? More Info I am switching over 800 DNS zones to an outsourced DNS provider. I originally planned on setting the zone names to nsX.company.com, but think it would be best to have multiple TLDs such as .net , .org and .info Since I plan on supporting DNSSec at company.com I think all the 1st tier Name servers must support it as well. Part of the inspiration for this question came from our provider UltraDNS.
